The Persuaders! Theme Tune by John Barry - ATV/ITC (ITV) 1971

- The Persuaders! - starring Roger Moore and Tony Curtis - was the last of the big-budget action adventure series from Lew Grade's ITC/ATV stable. And what a brilliant theme tune it had - from none other than the legendary James Bond composer John Barry. This is the full version of the original John Barry recording of The Persuaders theme tune.
I remember seeing The Persuaders for the first time in 1971. I was 11 at the time and my grandparents said 'this is a show we think you'll enjoy'. They were so right! I couldn't wait for Friday nights when it was shown. Colour TV was still a novelty back then and the programme seemed to glow with the brilliant colours of the south of France where so much of the location shooting was done - a huge departure from the normal practice of only using studio sets at the time.
Lew Grade persuaded Tony Curtis to cross the pond and play Danny Wilde, a working class boy from The Bronx who had made his millions by speculating on oil. Wilde was the comedic foil for the debonair Lord Brett Sinclair played by a pre-Bond Roger Moore. Naturally Grade was keen to sell the show to the US and so an American star was essential. Curtis and Moore were wonderfully supported by the veteran British actor Laurence Naismith as The Judge in many episodes.
The on-screen chemistry between Wilde and Sinclair was cheekily adversarial but each had an unspoken respect for the other. The off-screen chemistry between Curtis and Moore was a little more problematic. Curtis, frequently stoned during shooting, couldn't remember his lines and often ad-libbed. This was sometimes apparent even to the viewer, but caused consternation to those playing opposite him.
Nevertheless the result was an exciting show that was enthusiastically received by the audience.
There were continuity errors a-plenty in The Persuaders! not least because the location shoots were often done in France whilst the studio shots were filmed in the UK. Perhaps the most famous error is that Lord Brett Sinclair's Aston Martin appears in one scene with its genuine number plate PPP 6H because somebody forgot to attach the personalised BS 1 plate. Not that we cared at the time!!
One episode of The Persuaders featured a pre-production Range Rover - the first appearance on TV of what we now call an SUV. It was driven so hard across a bumpy field that the rear window broke, causing a long delay in filming whilst another window was located and fitted.
Roger Moore looked much more modern as Brett Sinclair with his flowing hair and with his 1970s outfits than he did just a couple of years earlier as the tweedy, Brylcreemed Simon Templar in The Saint. The Persuaders positioned him perfectly for his subsequent role as James Bond the Second. In fact other Bond regulars Bernard Lee and Lois Maxwell made guest appearances in individual episodes of The Persuaders!
The show was known under different names around the world including Amicalement Votre in France, Die Zwei in Germany, Attenti a Quei Due in Italy, Los Persuasores in Spain, and Dos Tipos Audaces in several South American countries. However my favourites have to be the Swedish title Snobbar som Jobbar (Snobs on the Job), Hungarian Minden Lében Két Kanál (Two Spoons in Every Juice) and Japanese ダンディ2 華麗な冒険 (Two Dandies' Brilliant Adventures) ... utterly bizarre!!
The German version - Die Zwei - adopted a completely radical dubbing approach, to the extent that the script was radically different from the original. Rainer Brandt the German actor who provided Curtis's voice and who coordinated the German dubbing decided to increase the comedic content of the banter between Sinclair and Wilde. Rainer even lampooned the whole idea of dubbing by adding the line 'Du musst jetzt etwas schneller werden, sonst bist du nicht synchron' (You'd better speed up or you won't be in sync) in one episode. Rainer's approach was credited for the enormous success of Die Zwei in Germany and Austria.
The French version, Amicalement Votre followed the concept of the German dubbed version more closely than the original English one.
R.I.P. Sir Roger and Tony, and also musical genius John Barry. They will not be forgotten - legends.
Most definitely 👍
Absolutely-hope the next generation appreciates their work as much as we do.
I have forgotten tony curtis
The glory years.
Alguien me puede decir que autos son esos? No se nada de eso pero me gustan🤭😅
It's not until you reach middle age that you fully appreciate the brilliance of the TV programmes of the late 1960s and the early 1970s ..... The Persuaders ... The Baron ... The Champions ... The Protectors ..... The Saint ... Randall & Hopkirk ( deceased ) ..... Department S .....
A roll-call of sheer delight!
The Prisoner too.
Couldn't agree more, today the zest is gone, film making is lost😢
Lost in Space, The Clangers, Space 1999 - The Avengers, Streets of San Francisco - Black Beauty - Hawaii-Five-0 and many many more magical memories - ahh those were the days my friend
🎉😊
This wonderful theme tune still sparkles, after all these years. A great series.
It certainly does!
@@LostsTVandRadio I think it would be a good pro wrestling theme song, for mega heel character. With that kind of theme song, what do you guys think his gimmick should be?
Your point being?
Your comment doesn’t seem to answer the question I asked. Your point being?
Rest in peace Roger More and Tony Curtis...
Moore
This tune was the first record I ever had. My Mum bought the single for me when I was 6! Still sends a shiver down my spine.
Ah, I didn't remember that it was released as a single. What a great first record to have!!
Hey Rob! Do you have a brother called Stephen? Used to work at iD? If so, FRP says hi! John Barry was an old b-f's godfather. Lovely man. Musical genius. He appears as himself in 1968 film Deadfall with Michael Caine and Eric Portman. John Barry is conducting a piece of music he composed for classical Spanish guitar and orchestra. The Persuaders theme is my favourite tune from any TV 'spy'/crime fighters genre! 👍
@magwildwood9816 Hi, I have a brother - but his name is Graham! 🤣 Even so, it's interesting to hear your story. Thanks for commenting. 😀

Totally agree. Miss that era.
How could one ever forget this theme ?
whoever wrote start of pennyworth theme music obviously remembered the iconic start of pursauders theme ;P ( ua-cam.com/video/yWv7N-MxD0Y/v-deo.html )
Heard it when I was 5, and for the last time when I was 8, never found it again until now 20 years later, after years of searching! Never forgotten
Exactly
The greatest programme theme tune that has ever been and ever will be.
YES !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mission Impossible second.

Atmospheric beyond description I still feel the joy of this show in 2023
Yep - me too!
Its called ATMOSPHERE! - This music 🎶🎶🎶🎶
One of the greatest TV themes ever written.
Brilliant theme, reminds me of my childhood on a Sunday afternoon in front of the TV
yep, wet sunday afternoon in Donny - then private jet to Nice and crack some crime and a few puns along the way. You know, I miss that now?
Reminds me of when I was a kid in 70 s haunting theme takes me back ❤
the whole family sat down together in the living room on a weekend watching together and interacting - Now everyone lives in their own bedroom either playing computer games or on their mobile phones - sad times
The best cult tv series ever. The best theme tune ever. Gosh this brings back wonderful memories. When life was a bit more simple and less frenetic. Miss you Roger and Tony.
Yes it was wonderfully simple back then!!
I wish I’d experienced those days. I’d rather have been born a hundred years earlier.
Life has never been simple it is always just an illusion of simplicity.
@John Bond Not really, there were still wars, new music was looked down on, the cloths people had was often looked down on, and so on.
I think we are about the same but ever so slightly better today.
We are more tolerant, as people, we are wealthier, if we work, and lots more people own their own properties plus buy expensive items or save.
All in all things are much better today than in those days, but we have it better because of what they did for themselves and us.
And things will get even better though we may not think they are in the future.
@@flitsiesNope. Much more fast paced. No jobs for life, people impatient due to digital age and everything is express. Life always has problems but we have complicated society since the 80s and so called free-ing up tech.
Still makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck even after 50+ years, legendary theme tune
Same!!
Roger Moore and Tony Curtis were superb in, 'The Persuaders.' They effectively carried what was a very cheesy concept and made it work brilliantly. Their on screen chemistry was superb, Tony Curtis had excellent comic timing, and Roger Moore was so debonair. The end result was an entertaining rollercoaster of frivolous fun, glamourous women, and fabulous locations. I saw Roger Moore at Southport theatre about seven months prior to his demise. He described, 'The Persuaders,' as, "The best BAD television ever made!" Priceless! :)
Ah yea! I really wish I'd made it to one of those theatre appearances.
This concept of two men, born on the same day and year, from disparate backgrounds. Jeffrey Archer may have used this for his best-selling novel,'Kane and A el'
Indeed. In fact one of the funniest moments was in the very first episode when they met for the first time in a bar and argued over how many olives should go into Brett's cocktail.Brett's description of the image of two olives is hilarious
@@peterbrenton410'A pleasure I shall have to forego . . .' 😂
Utterly brilliant score by the Great John Barry !!! A total masterpiece RIP THE GREAT MAN MY HERO.
From York, same as Judi Dench and Frankie Howard
This is undoubtedly my FAVOURITE TV theme. Hands down.
After all these years, it still gives me the goose bumps...
Musique, voitures élégantes, acteurs : une époque formidable, peine d'optimisme et de légèreté que nous ne reverrons pas. L'Aston DBS me fait pleurer.
Yes, all those wonderful elements came together beautifully! The Aston makes me smile!
Everytime I hear that theme tune and the Randall & Hopkirk one, it reminds me of sitting with my Dad (rip) watching telly on a sunday afternoon all those years ago 😇
Lovely!!
me too!)
The first episode with the song “Gotta get away” and the car chase into Monaco is my favourite bit of tv of all time
Yes, it set the tone for the whole series. And I just love those roads along the south of France.
The classic cars, the glamour, the suave handsome looks of pre bond Roger Moore. The quirky charm of Tony Curtis and chemistry that really worked between them .And, what set it up brilliantly every week for me was the opening sequence, with the spellbinding ,mesmerising John Barry score. Barry was an absolute maestro at his craft.
Couldn't have put it better myself!
Thanks very much. It caught the mood of the time so well. Such a shame there was only 1 series made, as far as I know..
Yes, just the one (alas)@@765ketyjo
- This is evidently all-time best TV-series Theme-music. I don't recall any better.
I totally agree! It was an inspired choice getting John Barry to compose the theme tune.
Absolutely agree! ❤
John Barry's genius is well documented. This,is a brief 2 minutes example of his mastery of composing. Moog synthesizer to the fore. It somehow seemed perfect for the series. Heard it in the background to some TV program I watched yesterday and I was inexorable drawn to playing it again. Absolutely brilliant
Two ridiculously handsome men let loose with money and cars, what's not to like?
I wouldn't have thought women would find Tony Curtis particularly good looking at this time of his life. Maybe when he was younger. Roger Moore was always a very handsome man though.
@@stevo62fulthey still found Tony attractive at that time.
OMG This was the series I could hardly wait to watch every week (In my childhood) They had superb cars. My father never wanted me to watch that b/c he thought I'd be carried away by their unrealistic lavish lifestyle.
I wish I could go back to those years..
Ah, the week-long anticipation of Friday nights, waiting for the next episode!!
Every time I hear this my life flashes in front of my eyes.
I was such a big fan of this programme. I must have been about eleven and Tony Curtis was my favourite actor. I remember at the time walking past the car showroom in our high street one day and was shocked to see a red Ferrari Dino in the window. I would stare at it for ages and think wow this is the same car as Danny Wilde’s. Now what shocks me is having a car showroom in my ordinary high street, back in the days when shops weren’t farmed out to industrial estates and you could get everything you needed in your local high street!
Ah yes, those were the days!!
Oh the nostalgia!..... love love love it! 😍
Indeed! Takes me back to a wonderful time!
Claro mucha nostagua,,🙂🇲🇽👌

Nothing takes you back better than a tune or song from the past. What we call a blast from the past nowadays!
This is what we all miss today, but at least we witnessed what a fabulous theme tune this was AND, of course those legendary actors in Tony Curtis & Roger Moore. R.I.P guys, you were the best.
we used to gather around the TV in our cosy living room and watch together as a family - mobile phones and the internet have controlled us now
I miss those two, such a class act. No one comes near their pairing as actors. God bless and God rest, I hope one day I will be able to pay my respects at their places of rest.
Some shows are so brilliant they never age. The Persuaders is in that category.
Agreed!!
A theme tune that will never be forgotten like the series It's part of my youth and a time we'll never get back.RIP legend that was John Barry

Absolutely loved this on a Sunday afternoon
Loved it when I was a kid..!!! Mesmerising Tune as well
The music alone just resonates something primal so deep hard to quantify John Barry really created a masterpiece seems too good for a TV series,. also another British classic The Avengers from the 60s series another fantastic theme
Yes the extraordinarily brilliant theme tune married to those wonderful opening titles really captivated the imagination.
i remember this soundtrack as a kid of 10 and its still haunts me
Im french and I have eighteen years old and I grew up with Him Tony and Roger I remember when Sir Roger Moore dead I will twelve. Merci pour ses beaux moments de 007 à Brett St Claire et Tony de Dany Wilde à Spartacus and Strangler of Boston
Awesome theme tune ! Along with the Sweeney, the best ever! My Parents split in 1972 and we (my Sister and Me) had to go to live with my grandparents on a very 'challenging council estate' on the border of Derbyshire. WE both adapted well, as we were raised well and taught ; 'manners and respect' ! This was my favourite Friday TV Show on a Friday , I also loved Robert Vaughn in 'The Protectors ! dx
Wine, woman and song.Would love to have been a Persuader in the early 1970s.
The best TV show theme ever.
Amen!

Gotta be a contender for the all time best theme tune.
Yes, and it's stood the test of time!
@@LostsTVandRadio not forgetting his Seminal Midnight Cowboy tune too.
This piece of Music is an amazing theme to an amazing TV series from 1970s. Gone but certainly not forgotten. . It's up there with the Ipcress Files. Both written by the legendary John Barry wow

This brilliant John Barry track was the very first single record that I ever bought, in the record department of The Co-op department store in Walsall, England. I was ten years old and was completely in love with The Persuaders, which in a Friday evening was a real highlight of the week for me. Wonderful memories!
Yes, I remember the excitement of waiting for Friday evening on ATV!
Hello from England
Such an ICONIC score from the ICONIC John Barry. For me the VERY BEST from the BEST apart from the BOND franchise
Every time i listen to the original and remix it reminds me of my childhood watching the series with Roger and Tony. It was all about the locations, the glamour, the champagne, the fast cars and it gave you the ESCAPISM
Also back then life seemed simpler.
This was when both ITV/ATV and the BBC were at the top of their game. Sadly TV is no longer what it was
Yes indeed - John Barry at his best. Oh, and how we loved that show ... :)
Oh yes
I agree with that totally.
One of the unforgettable themes of my childhood's TV. The Persuaders (so called Dos Tipos Audaces in Argentina) was a great TV series. Rest in peace Sir Roger Moore and Tony Curtis.
The best 1970s Lew Grade show. Two legends at the top of there game 😎

I'm currently catching the re-runs on tv. Loved all those ITC shows. It's hard to believe it 's so long ago.....
Lord I’m 58 and never had enough heard of this show… and I had known of John Barry as a composer.
One of the best TV shows of all time. I had the pleasure of seeing Roger Moore when he brought his 'An Evening with...' to Nottingham, must have been six years ago. So glad I got to sit in the same room as him before it was too late. Just bought the series on blu-ray and ordered the new compilation films 50th anniversary boxset. This series will live forever.

Sunday afternoon, winter. Lousy days no longer, with our heroes shining from Montercarlo’s beaches, inspiring us kids, to be like them, one day.

Even that beautiful Jenson brings back memories.
There may have been a Jensen in the series, but the main cars were an Aston Martin and a Ferrari. I think the Aston is exquisite!

The show was tongue-in-cheek fun - the theme has a lot more gravitas and I wish the series had lived up to that a bit more.
Yes that was always my view too. The end graphics and theme denoted a punchier atmosphere rather than the hokum it so often was. Still good to see the interplay between them both and the styles and fashions though.
