Whicker's World - Classic Opening Titles & Theme Tune BBC2 1967
Whicker's World was the original television travelogue-documentary hosted by the genial, avuncular broadcaster and journalist Alan Whicker.
Beginning as a feature segment on BBC Television's Tonight programme in 1959, Whicker's World became a hugely popular programme in its own right in the 1960s.
It ran until 1994, switching from the BBC Television Service to BBC1, BBC2 and ITV at various times (Alan Whicker was a director of Yorkshire Television which began broadcasting in 1968 and so for a number of years Yorkshire TV produced the programme).
Lovingly parodied by the Monty Python gang, Alan Whicker was the man in the old school tie who had the 'practised voice of the seasoned campaigner'.
This is my favourite of the many different Whicker's World theme tunes and opening sequences.
Amazingly Alan was allowed to walk behind the engines of a taxiing VC10 aircraft - well at least it appears to be the case. I guess the tail mounted engines were high enough to prevent him from being blown away!
The theme tune is 'West End' by prolific TV composer Laurie Johnson.

Down Your Way was a long-running Sunday afternoon BBC radio programme that travelled from town to town the length and breadth of the United Kingdom in order to meet ordinary and sometimes extraordinary people and to play their musical requests. Переглядів 9479 місяців тому
Saturday Club was one of only a small handful of pop music programmes on BBC radio prior to the start of Radio 1 in 1967. First broadcast as a one hour show called Saturday Skiffle Club on the BBC Light Programme in June 1957, it was presented by Brian Matthew who up to that point had been a newsreader. In October 1958 the appeal of the show was widened beyond the narrow confines of Skiffle mus...
Desert Island Discs - 1964's alternative theme tune - BBC Home Service
Переглядів 37610 місяців тому
Desert Island Discs was the brainchild of Roy Plomley and it has been a fixture on the wireless in Britain since 1942. A programme that's as familiar and comfortable to generations of Brits as an old pair of slippers. The BBC wouldn't mess with such a beloved national treasure, would they? Oh yes - of course they would! In 1964 that oh-so-familiar theme tune was changed. Gone were the gentle wa...

Weavers Green - the 1966 ITV soap that lasted for only one season of 49 episodes (which is probably why it's a largely forgotten series). Weavers Green was the fictional country village location for the action surrounding the lives of two vets. Predating Emmerdale Farm by six years, this was the original rural television soap. Location shooting was conducted primarily in Heydon, Norfolk - deep ...

The Protectors - no, not the famous 1972 ATV/ITC series of the same name but an earlier series that has been almost forgotten by many viewers. The Sky's The Limit was the only way to earn free air miles back in the 1970s! With Thames Television replacing London's ITV weekday contractor Rediffusion in 1968, the hugely popular game show Double Your Money that had been produced by Rediffusion and hosted by Hughie Green and Monica Rose came to an abrupt end. Newcomer Yorkshire Television was awarded the franchise for the Eastern part of t...

Remembering Dickie Davies the mellifluous World of Sport presenter who died on 19th February 2023 aged 94. For decades on Saturday afternoons in Britain the only viewing choice was BBC1's Grandstand or ITV's World of Sport. Tonight was the popular weekday features and magazine programme that followed the early evening news on the BBC Television Service (and during its final two years on BBC1). The years of 1962 to 1974 of the Kirkintilloch Herald - have been added to the British Newspaper Archive yesterday. We now know who was in the Lenzie Academy team. It was Linda Tennant, Marilyn Barr, Joan Dunlop and Ruth Arnaud. What I'm delighted in also finding out from the Kirkintilloch Herald, was that David Dimbleby was the son of Richard Dimbleby.

As a six-year old boy in 1971 I really tripped out on this music and the short introduction showing both actors from young cildren to men. In my innocence, I found it very haunting, and, ironically so, my dad was killed in a neighbourly dispute so I rarely play this because it evokes such intense feelings about my dad!

One episode urged you to help get the old coins out of circulation quicker by telling you to "Give more, get change" also sung by the Scaffold. In the run-up to 15 Feb 1971 we also listened to "The Penny Programme" at school on Radio 4, which was essentially a radio version of this aimed at kids It was presented by Stuart Henry and Peter Pacey.
