- New lures are cool, the best custom ice rods are awesome but nothing catching more fish than being efficient on the ice! This video is not a highlight reel of big walleyes I caught this day. This video is about how you can go out on any lake while ice fishing and be more productive everyday. Covering water is much easier in a boat so in this video I talk about how you can maintain that same amount of mobility when ice fishing. Thanks for watching and I hope this video was useful to you!

electronics is an absolute game changer. i bought a Helix 7 last winter and this year i boated around small ponds and mapped out small lakes. I caught a mess of specks in the dog days of summer and now after lakes on the hardwater!! i catch 75% of my fish only because i see them and can work the fish.

I am 67 yrs old. I must admit I am a little taken aback by modern fishing tech. I have seen the advancement of fish finders GPS tech cameras to now having it all on your ATV or other vehicles. I worry some about where this leads to. What is the next must-have tech to find fish? Will this continuing trend harm our fish populations? Do limits need to be reduced affecting the casual fisherman the most? Slot limits I understand but what is the survival rate of catch and release. From videos, it seems like some fishermen release hundreds of fish a year. We rented a wheelhouse last week 1st time I have fished in 1. Was very comfortable. We catch 3 slabs in 12 hrs. I am retired and would like to fish 2x a week now. Eat a few each month. A question to the pros, resorts, etc making a living from this, looking forward what can be done to protect the resource for future generations? More stocking? Higher fees? Wheelhouse Tax? Trail passes for ATVs/snowmobiles on public Lakes? Boats have to have them. I am not trying to blame anyone or thing I just am concerned.
I agree. I wonder about all those things. I have a vexilar, and can afford a live scope, but I don't want to take some of the mystery out of the experience.

Key to efficiency for me is using my Humminbird 698ci side scanner set up to find out if fish are in the area. (I just can't afford an upgrade to a Helix yet). You can scan a 100 foot diameter circle in about 20 seconds, then move on to the next hole 200 feet away. The transducer is attached to the end of a 1 1/4" pvc pipe that runs through another 2" pvc that is attached to a 1x4x12" base that sits on the ice, straddling the hole. The transducer cord runs up inside the pvc and a handle is attached to the top of the pipe. Drop the pipe down the hole, slowly spin the handle and scan the area, watching the screen for blips of fish. I do appreciate the advice on drilling the grid first, and having your gear handy at all times. This is the best fishing site on UA-cam!!!

For minnows/minnow heads do you use salted minnows, dead minnows, or just live minnows you threw in the puck? Any preference on minnow type...shiners, large fatheads, suckers etc?

Hey Tom I’m trying to use my helix 9 gn2 just for gps on my atv too. Had some questions you don’t need ducer plug in do you? And is there a setting I need to be in gps won’t work for me

Garmin striker 4 is an absolute awesome addition if your a budget fisherman it is universal for regular boat and ice fishing and quite portable it comes with flasher and a regular sonar with A-scope it's about 199 and works with regular boat transducer for ice fishing just use a pool floaty to keep it level💪 stay safe out there.... If you're looking for a little more there's the striker 4 plus CV with ice transducer makes things less of a hassle and has a bigger screen and a little more features that one is 244👍 good luck getting one not on backorder they are HOT
Love your progressions through the 4 seasons,your videos are extremely interesting. I know your from Wisconsin and noticed your registration for your atv has expired might want to get that addressed before you get pinched (lol). Keep them coming.
Underwear, leg long johns, fuzzy pyjamas, track pants & then overalls (snowpants). T shirt, long sleeve without hood (or 2), hoodie and coat. That'll get you through most cold conditions. Worst thing you'll have to do is strip a few layers.
Great job Tom !! Im haven't done that much ice fishing do to the fact of locating fish. Your set up is crazy cool!! Using your GPS and Wave Points got me fired up to duplicate your set up . My problem is that I'm from north central Iowa and my fishing grounds / wave points are around Grand Rapids, MN. I've never fished Wisconsin might be giving you a call this winter.

I don’t have my helix set up on my wheeler but I do have navionics on my phone so I will drive the outline I want to drill watching my phone then double back and drill the holes. Pretty efficient and after the second time over the area have a pretty decent trail to walk and fish the holes

I'm very interested in the primaloft pants, Tom. I'm 5'7" and 170 lbs. What size would you recommend?
Bait pucks are huge. Gotta keep your hands dry, main thing. After you catch a fish or reach in the bait bucket make sure to dry them off before you put your gloves on. Also not convinced drilling a ton of holes on a spot is necessary. Maybe if your fishing a flat but if structure a couple would work np.
Thank you for this video Tom. I think something that frustrates the “Average Joe” is that we aren’t afforded the luxuries of the Pros who can go fish Devils Lake, Lake of the Woods, Red, Mille Lacs, and Leech every weekend. We just want someone who can go to a small lake and can give us the best advice they know to catch fish. I know this video is on Mille Lacs but it can be more difficult (in my opinion) catching walleye or decent pike in smaller lakes (on average) than these bigger name lakes and I feel like pros over look the average Joe who has kids and can only fish weekends. Tips are solid and thanks for the consideration.
Thanks. Basically all my videos which aren't titled mille lacs are on the smaller lakes of northern Wisconsin. These are the lakes I spend most of my time on and walleyes are not extremely abundant. One thing I've learned is when you get decent on find I'll mg and catching on these tougher lakes it becomes a cakewalk on the big name lakes. Thanks for watching

I know, takes too much time and you're the only one there and you'll be careful. Last words describing most accidents are, "Seemed like a good idea at the time."

hey tom i have a marcum flasher and most of the lakes i drive on with my truck, would my best bet to pay for a navionics subscription and use the app on my phone if i want to find spots?
Yes. I believe it's like 10 bucks or something. Definitely the easiest route. Or pick up a helix 5 gps sonar combo. Prob 300 bucks. Paired with a lakemaster card and you have an all in one unit.

But the problem is my rod is not enougth powerfull, not enougth backbone...my question is what is the length and the power of the rod that you use in this show? I know the brand, but mot the rest!! This guy looks like he's gone ice fishing a couple of times. Wow, that's a great setup! So I doubt this happens often but what if you just drilled all of those holes and some clown comes by sees a couple of them and sets up besides you and starts using the holes you drilled? I've only gone ice fishing a couple of times and love it but the last time I went my friend took us to a spot where it seemed to be quite popular as people started setting up about 10 -15 feet from us. Some were so noisy with kids running around it just ruined a nice peaceful fishing trip.
I agree you need to be mobile and hole hop to an extent but videos like this one have spawned an entire group of fishermen that will absolutely swiss cheese a lake or pond to the point of making it nearly impossible for anyone else to fish without fishing in or near one of their holes and then they get pissed because you are. You do not need 100 holes to catch a lot of fish. Otherwise Tom I love your videos and I agree you are one of the top UA-cam fisherman out there.
Do you tie right to the kastmaster or tie to the clip that comes with the lure for walleye?
If they have a split ring u can direct tie or use snap. No split ring use snap. I always use snap for easy bait chamging with cold hands
Do use braided line if so what kind ? And do you use a leader and what length do you go ?
Also what rod?
Personally, I don't like braided line when I am outside in the winter because it seems to collect more water and freezes up more than mono.

very good presentation. i wish you did more on clothes you wear under the bibs. alot of guys over dress sweat then get very cold in the cold. i myself prefer mickey mouse boots long socks and shorts that way i dont sweat and get very cold. i really like your rod holder systen . its fast and keeps the rods ready also un tangled
Dude, you're young, so I'll give you some advice now while there's still time for you to benefit from it. That's the same auger I have, so I know what it weighs. Standing clear up on that 4-wheeler like that while drilling a gazillion holes will destroy your back. I doubt it gives you enough of an efficiency advantage to be worth it. Get down, step around. The mount on that graph can be turned around so that you can get the same targeting advantage by just drilling at the front of the vehicle, using bungie cords or something to secure the auger between holes, and NOT do all that bending and twisting with that heavy auger.
Some folks here might call me a wuss for saying that, but you'll get much more out of life if you're ergonomically smart and take care of your body.
