They sure were!!! Solid tight harmonies and choreography and such cool pro composure throughout!! What a great live historical performance of talent captured for all time!! :)
The speed of that live version of "Heat Wave" - sounded like they were playing a game of Beat the Clock! Very nice impromptu set by the trio, all in good voice here.
Thank the Lord somebody taped it, somebody saved the tape, & 50-odd years later, it got posted here! Just so little of the group from the early days, this is a feast. I had only ever heard of Mike Douglas, because his show was not aired where I grew up. He's at ease, puts others at ease, and asks intelligent questions. I'm subscribed.
That was the difference between Martha and the Vandellas and The Supremes, The Vandellas we're always out front with Martha, where as Mary and Flo started getting push more and more to the back.
Exactly now that you mention this. Martha wasn’t playing the BS Berry Gordy had set with the Supremes. She had the Vandellas up front with her as a group not as a damn lead singer with a backups. All clips I’ve seen of Martha with her group they were up front with her. Thanks for mentioning this.
@@Vincent50 After Martha used her clout to fire Betty and then Rosalind, Martha had the "new" Vandellas singing way way behind her in her first Mike Douglas appearance with the "new" Vandellas, namely Lois and Sandra.
@@jackjules7552That didn’t happen! You’re watching one of the first appearances on the Mike Douglas show with your own eyes & you Rosalind Ashford & Betty Kelly singing! Sandra & Lois DID NOT appear later in her career!
Betty and Roz sound very earthy and soulful on those co-leads, very different sound (respectfully) than Andantes backgrounds. Martha IMO remains the most distinctive lead singer on that label, unmistakable and magnificent sound. Mike was not up to date on either the group members or their touring schedule , though he handled the interview like a masterful pro, small wonder artists always spoke so well of him and the show.
Raaare. Mike Douglas show was pioneering, raw and fantastic for how it showcased arena, church and nightclub acts. Laid-back and the real deal. Roz singing live. Wow. And the stripped-down harmony. This is also why I enjoy NPR Tiny Desk Concert series at this era of my life. Edit: That harmony on the standard they sang after "Heatwave" is tight. Outstanding. ❤️ Didn't know Betty could blow like that. I just complimented Annette Beard (who Betty replaced) over Betty in another clip I watched before this one. I guess I'll have to eat crow. #Vocalz
I grew up listen to Martha and the Van Della's, moms had the hold motown albums, this segment of 🎵 is good to see , thanks for posting this, martha smooth with her feet and singing.
It's a beloved sight watching how these 3 young lovely stars were still developing as performers doing regional shows (Hi Hat club and NAACP convention) while morphing onto nationally syndicated show performances. If you look real close at Martha Reeves, you immediately spot how she had already come into her own as a top female star with that charming laugh, onstage persona and ad-libs. Is it just me, or was she purposefully a step ahead of the Vandellas here?
Actually, they’re both in the same bracket of singing it’s just that the Vandellas went with much more of a soulful effect, which was for the much more blacker and country audience The Supremes were appealing up standing white people in Europe, which was the difference that’s why Florence in the beginning fitted the supreme memo but when 1966 through 1967 hit that memo changed.and she no longer fitted in chart one thing I seen on the charts was that Berry would always release the Supremes album before or after the Vandellas causing a shift between buys and records to Vandellas actually thank the Supremes a lot because they were the ones bringing in the number one records
Thanks for posting this. Now I really enjoyed their LIVE performance. Each of them, Martha, Rosalind and Betty are superb. They are not the typical "lead singer plus others" here.
I love Martha and the Vandellas, they look and sound amazing, I love when they wear their own clothes. I would love to see footage from the NAACP benefit program that Martha talks about!
First time seeing!!! Great job. No auto tone.. just straight talent. . Liked I could the backgrounds and they were featured as well.. like the live musicians.!!!!
I used to love this woman( Martha Reeves) when I was eight years old, ha, hahaha hahaha. She just reminded me of the fine teenage chicks that my older sister used to bring to the crib when I was around that age in the 60s. Although Martha Reeves wasn't a teenager, she was hot, and she was my fantasy older woman, hahaha hahaha hahaha. And that song My Baby Loves Me is my favorite song of theirs, and it still does something for me even when I listen to it now.
Can you tell me what year this took place? Or can anyone else tell me what year this is! The awesome and wonderful Martha and the Vandellas. What a unique name for a group! They were as good as the Supremes! And Martha had a voice that I think was just a good as Diana Ross's!
@@TheRetNetwork Thanks. That was two days after my ninth birthday, fourth grade. And I was in Philadelphia at the time! (The Mike Douglas show was located there.)
Mike was caught off guard for his interview and he knew it , I’m sure he improved upon it as artists always spoke highly of him, Jay Black comes to mind as one.
According to Martha’s book, tension was at an all-time high between her and Betty Kelly during this exact performance. Martha had just found out that her boyfriend David (on guitar) was cheating on her with Betty’s friend and the group’s hairstylist, Wenny - who happened to be Florence Ballard’s cousin. They both antagonized Martha. By the time they arrived to the taping, Martha had decided she was going to fire them both! Who doesn’t love a good girl group story?
Winnie was trouble. She started seeing Temptations Paul Williams I guess after this affair and things turned upside down for Paul with his health, his marriage, his business he and Winnie started, and his escalation in drinking.
The fact we get to hear Betty and Rosalind individually….I love it!!
Wow. Betty and Rosalind should have had more solos!!!
