Talk shows are phony, karate boxers are better than prizefighters, and, in his upcoming match with George Forman in South Africa, he'll take the title back--no problem. Ali also talks about his children; three daughters and a son, who he hopes will never get into the ring. Actor/singer Theodore Bikel performs music from his hit Fiddler On The Roof. Congressman Wayne Hays makes an appearance to discuss the evils of campaiim spending. Ali then gets into a heated discussion with him about racial politics that Sly tries In vain to break up. My god Muhammad Ali has so much patience, respect, and intelligence. Yet he is not afraid to voice his opinion without holding back. It's amazing.
Intelligence? He is articulate. But I wouldn't say super intelligent. Because he is in denial of actual history. He literally believed black slave traders were nice to their slaves. And sold then because they were just good people. 🤦♂️ they forcefully enslaved weaker tribes. Murdered them. Sacrificed them. Bred them like animals so they could take their children and sell them. I had forgotten how good Mike Douglas shows were back in the day. He included people from all different backgrounds and experiences. This made his show a learning experience as well as entertainment. We need these kind of shows today because people are so divided and dont know how to have a conversation with someone who has different beliefs and opinions. Muhammad Ali was always so honest and an amazing human being. Sly is just Sly but man what a bandleader and performer!!

We're in a time where people can't stop bitching about how others are supposedly upset and offended by everything, and if that were true it would certainly mean that people are taking things -too- seriously. This is so random, but back around 1976 or so, one day after school was out, a small group of us high schoolers were standing outside in front of the school waiting for the bus.
When out of the blue, a limo pulls up, and who gets out of the limo? Muhammed Ali!! We couldn't believe it. I honestly can't remember all of what he said, but he encouraged us to stay in school. I was mesmerized, thinking "what just happened??" We were all blown away.
He only stayed for 15 min or so, and then he got in limo and left. Maybe he was on the way to the airport? The cool thing was, he knew about our high school and took time out to stop by. Poly High, Long Beach, California!
I am 61 now. I never forgot that day!
And for any doubters, that's ok too. You are welcone to contact Poly High in Long Beach. Hopefully they still have records from 1977 or 78 and can verify. Or possibly someone from Muhammed Ali's organization. There are records somewhere!

And he getting ready to put hands on Sly a couple of times throughout this interview, although looking back, anyone could tell that Sly was high in the friendly skies. Humility was not an attribute of Muhammad Ali. I used to have to spend lots of time in Children's Hospital in Oakland, California when I was a kid in the 1950s and 60s. Often celebrities' publicists arranged for them to come to the hospital to have PR photos taken of them sitting with and cheering up sick and otherwise hospitalized children, doing good turns and deeds. Every celebrity I ever saw visit spent time speaking and playing with the kids, except for Muhammed Ali. He was in and gone in less than 10 minutes, and didn't even say hello. When he left the kids talked about it, and the consensus among the children was that "He just came to get his picture taken".
I was 14 years old when this show aired. I thank Mike Douglass for hosting so many black Americans and for having discussions that affected our lives here in USA during a time when very few shows did.

This was honestly a great debate between all parties. It was all kept professional. Everyone got to state their arugment, while the other individual listened. No one jumped out of anger, disrespected the other individual by slurs, etc. And all parties provided factual things. Not just nonsense. This was great!
Almost 50 years later and we are still having the same BS conversation. Ali makes the most sense in all of this still.
I was born in 1952 so seen so many pluses over the years (in racial matters) but recently saw a YT comment section featuring comments by mixed race American children. It broke my heart and made me see we really have a long long way to go. All of us need to embrace the idea that we can be better people and discipline ourselves in that direction.

I think because of how people have so thoroughly embraced the idea of race, we dont see ourselves as people, independent of racial ideology and identities. "Race" the ideology permeates our vocabulary. Its become central to our identity. It effects the way we think, see ourselves and view others. This is absolutely the most interesting show I have seen. First, a co-host high as a heck, then the interaction between Mohammed Ali and Sly who was high the whole show, Ali holding his own against the politician without bitting his tongue. This was a fireworks of a show!

One of the high points of my life was meeting Muhammad Ali. I was working at Saint Jude children’s research Hospital in Memphis in 1990 and Muhammad Ali came in to film a commercial for the hospital. It was a rainy day and the production people were delayed so he was sitting in the waiting room and a nurse friend of mine who worked in receiving told him there was a guy in the hospital who was a boxer because I had fought golden gloves for a couple of years growing up so he said go get him. So I came up from the pharmacokinetics lab where I worked and there he was standing in the hallway and when I walked by him I said a few words to him and he kind of stared crazy off into the sky as if he couldn’t hear me so then I started getting humble and then he took a swing at me! He said you’re too easily fooled! So I backed off and we shadowboxed for a couple of minutes and then we stopped and had a laugh and his wife mostly did the talking for him but it was fun and unbelievable. He was always present for anyone to brighten her day and that’s why he was at the hospital to do a commercial for young kids dying of cancer.

I love the 70's talk shows, there was so much more honesty on so many levels than manufactured ones today.
While Sly was high and avoiding the truth of the day, Mohammad Ali was living and breathing it confronting it head on. He was a strong and focused soul of deep faith and understanding. When you see people smoking weed and drinking and doing drugs, they are trying to escape instead of face what’s really going on. I respect most about Ali is he was always confronting the truth and didn’t practice escapism through drug use to avoid serious and painful issues. A true courageous man.

But when you watch this
interview, it’s sad yet telling at the same time. Sly, which maybe a lot of people don’t know, was well educated and a college graduate. Ali, on the other hand isn’t very educated at this point, and as he has said on other interviews, couldn’t read past a 3rd or 4th grade level. So Sly is actually making a lot of valid points but because he’s high and saying things in I’ll say, “Hippie Lingo,” Ali doesn’t get his point. He’s actually talking over Ali’s head. But Ali during this whole segment is definitely pissed at Sly and everyone else is catching his wrath. You can tell with Sly’s eye contact before the break when he goes to sip his drink, and you can also hear when the show resumes that Ali is saying some things to Sly. This is really a case of two men being on two different levels of sophistication. One not really being educated and in a lot of ways at this point in life, being programmed, and the other being extremely educated and having complete understanding of the world-but he can’t be heard beyond his altered state by Ali.

Ali is estimated to have earned about $60 million in his entire 20 year career. That's about $188 million in today's dollars, or about $62 million short of what Mayweather earned for just one routine night against Connor McGregor. Make no mistake, Ali was a well paid athlete in his day. But his expenses, along with the needs of those associated with him, ate up the bulk of Ali's fortune. It's why he still was fighting at the age of nearly 40, when most of his skills were gone and the onset of disease was already apparent.

I was born & raised near Ali's training camp and went there often to see him train , reel ahead a few years and I was stationed at Travis Air Force Base in California . My room mate was from Oakland and took me and a few guys to the little green house on the corner in the hood where Sly grew up . Experience of a lifetime and things that I will never forget . Loved both Ali and The family Stone ....

While I love both of them, I feel like they should have been on different episodes. Two different personalities and they are obviously clashing. Ali is a very serious and disciplined soul and Sly is very free spirited & fun loving and has a hard time keeping quiet when someone else is talking. They experience the world differently.

Good Lord!!!! Ali showed an immeasurable amount of restraint towards Sly Stone. The amount of patience and forgiveness he exhibited towards our intoxicated Brother is a lesson I will remember, while still being alert of my surroundings. Ali was a strong man of principles.

Sly was a musical genius and his music has been timeless. Watching some of these old clips have made me appreciate Michael Douglas for having interesting, dynamic, informed guests who engaged in respectful discussion. And it was on daytime TV . I am not sure that Ali was aware that Bickel was a strong activist for civil rights and human rights and did more than just say things on talk shows but rolled up his sleeves and went into the street. Hays was an effective legislator who in his time was a "liberal" but it is somewhat amusing that he was brought down because of a sex scandal that involved the misuse of funds as he had his mistress on his office payroll.
It's sad to see what drugs did to Sly, being an intelligent and conscious man himself, this was humiliating. Ali handled it like a champ though. You can see he saw that he was high and just paid him no mind
Yes sly was probably high on some sort of drug, but how do you know Michael Douglas didn't just have a drink. Sly was completley with it the whole time, you are just too lazy to understand what he was saying and its easier to just believe the narrative that drugs are bad and don't listen to people on drugs, even though Micheal douglas probably had a few drinks and maybe even some uppers or caffiene to keep himself focused. it is sad to see what years of misuse of drugs from ill gotten sources have done to him, but in this interview he is totally with it, just comming from a different culture and talking with a different language than what you're accustomed to. This was in the late 60s and early 70s when human consciousness, love and traditional values were more in the front of people's minds than money. The youth tossing off the 50s, suspenders and collared shirt with uncomfortable brown pants in 90 degree weather, and picking up ideas from the aboriginals who were on the land before they were. Because they knew the aboriginals had been there for thousands of years and were doing fine, meanwhile the society they were in that claimed to be so much better, was so blatantly corrupt and on a clear path to destruction. (Fast forward 50 years and look where we're at now, thousands of armed and ready nuclear missiles around the globe, global warming, terrorism, collapsing economy, an infrastructure so weak it can't handle a simple epidemic which was easily foreseen by people with knowledge of history and pandemics and viruses. And people were being sent to die in gruesome jungle warfare against gurilla forces that knew the land like the back of their hand...
So to those who think sly was off his rocker and Ali was so intelligent, well I would say Ali was a little behind the times. And where sly is saying let's all just focus on enjoying now and making positive change, Ali is taking a divisive Stance. And what happens is an argument of counter opposing talking points, and sly realizes that it aint gonna change anything, its just going to create annomosity, and its positive interactions, for example sharing music and dancing, that allow people to become exposed to the same sort of information the other side has been getting. And take it further, if people were to be positive and act with pure intention towards one another, people would be more willing to hear criticism on their sides point of view. And then Sly shows the boxer, the TV personality and the author what true power is when he gets everyone up out of their seats with his funky beats! Thats real power.

Ali was right when he said, "White people & black people like different music, food, culture, art etc..." I agree with him. My role models are mostly white. White music artists, Henry Rollins, Al Di Meola, Uli Jon Roth, mostly white artists, I'm a musician. I like some black artists too, however, I wouldn't call them role models for myself.
I can't relate to Tupac, Kanye West, Beyonce, & hip hop in general. There's nothing wrong with it, I just can't relate to it & I don't like it. I like rock, classical, country, things most black people don't like or can relate to. I know not all whites or blacks feel the way I do but I think most people like what they can relate to. It has nothing to do with racism. There are always exceptions to the rule. My role models are people I can relate to, & they happen to be White. If I was black, my role model or role models would most likely be black. Sure, there are some White people that act more black than white, & some black people that act more White than black. However, there's nothing wrong with relating to your own race, & having role models in your own race. You're right, not all whites are racist but a lot of them are. I think a lot of blacks are racist too & they have good reason to be. I'm afraid racism will always be around.

Ali never been Knocked out, where Tyson been KO'D 5 times. Where Ali loses were close decisions that he later come back and won them all, except when he just was too sick to fight. The Greatest of all times!!! I like Tyson who was a awesome KO guy but he could be out boxed by a top shelf boxer. But still one of my favorites but not the greatest.

Love the way that whenever Ali appeared in public, he dressed like a businessman. He dressed like a conservative, and in doing this, he was taken seriously, most athletes dressed casually or outlandishly by comparison.
Pretty much everyone back then, including high profile athletes, dressed in a suit and tie when in public. But you must admit, Ali was still well dressed.
