These are the original Vandellas. But by the time Dancing in the Street was recorded and released original Vandella Annette had already left the group and Betty Kelly replaced her. Betty Kelly is actually better known than Annette as Betty was with the group longer and sang on more hits than Annette.
She still had her voice in the 70's so I'm guessing that she must have starting losing it in the late 80's early 90's? I have a DVD with her and fellow Motown singers from 1999 and she was tolerable then. I love Martha Reeves and hate that she lost her gift BUT she still gorgeous in 2022!! Them there eyes!!!
Not sure what happened, but by this time Martha had developed a tremor in her voice, like a vocal palsy. She was not very old, I'm not sure what caused this.
YES, that strange shaking almost like a stroke tremor, I love her & her hits but my God she sounds horrendous & she's been like this since the 70s. I wasn't born until Dec. 1978, but from watching videos, it seems whatever this weird affliction is, it started while she was still young, back in the 70s & its gotten worse over time. Makes you wonder if any1 tells her the truth🤷🏿♀️?
Roz & Annette are GREAT, their beautiful tight harmonies are literally just as perfectly tight as they were in the 60s. Seems like 1 of them shoulda took over the lead bcuz my girl Martha's voice is shot to shit, smh.
These girls had soul and raw natural talent. It is tragic that they did not get the attention that another girl group got during that era. If a bit more time and money would have been invested with Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, they would have been equally as successful.

Annette did not sing on Dancing in the Street. Annette had left by then and Betty Kelly sang on Dancing on the Street and all the hits thereafter.
Backing vocals are really good, Martha has lost a step or two with her vocals.

I saw the original lineup in 1988. Martha has reunited with them intermittently over the years. These days she is singing with her sister.

It's not palsy she intentionally started singing like that around this time. I think she was trying to sound jazzy with vibrato. She sounds terrible.
