It's worth noting that I only activate the scuttlebug while I'm not activating the scuttlebug so the scuttlebug will always lunge toward the scuttlebug. So to get that speed, we're gunna use a trick called an A press, and here's how it works. You probably know that there are some slopes in the game. If the wall isn't the wall, then we end up sliding down into the water. *obnoxious voice* PARALLEL UNIVERSES
@@blinkingberry9591 why do i have the feeling you're gatekeeping his videos because you feel that the commented ones are seem as a 'meme' to a lot of people?
I normally never sign in on youtube but I just had to do it to like this video. Despite knowing nothing about SM64, I found this easy to follow and very interesting. Great explanations.
Some questions (as this is a very interesting topic matter to me): How and why do you know all of this about the inner-workings behind Super Mario 64? Is there any documentation on it? How did your obsession with exploiting the glitches of SM64 start? How do you know what exactly to do at a given moment and for how long? Can this be achieved on actual hardware, or just through emulation? Last question (sorry I have so much of them): What drives your patience? Go to the Secret Aquarium in 0x A presses took over a day to complete.
+Dashiel Heidt 1. He finds the glitches out with his friends (and maybe some on the internet). I don't know if there is any documentation on it though. 2. He was cloning coins to get a 255 coins score in the possible worlds. 3. He knows the glitches. If you mean for like WHEN he has to do it, what frame, he's TASing this, that means he's replaying the thing a lot of times. 4. It could be, if one was skilled enough. In fact, ALL the glitches could probably be done, other than the ones with PUs, because they crash the game on a real N64. 5. I don't know. Even I am surprised on how he has quite the patience to do stuff. I guess he REALLY likes doing this stuff
+Dashiel Heidt Let me give some deeper answers: 1. Mario64 community is one of the largest speedrunning communitys (according to speedrun.com even the second largest right after Ocarina of Time). They discovered A LOT already (way before ABC became a thing). Rest is basically a lot of testing, random encounters and reverse engineering. There is a lot of documentation on pannnenkoeks second channel (pannenkeok2012 , yea he just switched 2 letters lol). There are also the channels of other ABC Crew members like Tyler Kehne . 2. He started with 255 coins videos, according to him its like "a completely new game in my favorite game". You should also keep in mind that pannenkeok is not the only guy doing this, there is the whole "ABC Crew". 3. You'll have to have an Idea of what you want to achieve, then think about how you could achieve that with the things you have. If you know how stuff works, you also know how long you have to do something (or you just try it out, savestates and TAS tools are your friend). 4. So far, everything except the Aquarium 0x A entrance could be achieved on console, assuming you have frameperfect skills lol. Aquarium entrance will crash on console, because we can't fix camera in the PU. Works on Virtual Console though. 5. Motivation lol. Pedro for example (know him IRL, got me into Mario64) is a motivation BEAST. If he starts a game, he'll probably spend the next 3 days playing it without any sleep and have 1000 hours in 4 months later. As for Secret Aquarium: You can assume that he actually used Fast-Forward, I really doubt he sit there for 25 hours xD. Hope I was able to give you some insight.
(1) A lot of it is from experimental observation, though recently I've gotten Tyler Kehne to investigate the code behind certain mechanics to help me out. (2) I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so I wanted to get the max possible coin scores in each of the courses, which involved exploiting several infinite coin glitches. From there I learned a lot of glitches and studied them to figure out how they worked. Later I realized I could use my glitch knowledge to much improve the current records for the A button challenge, and so I set to work on that. And now, I find/study glitches in order to save even more A presses. (3) I'm not sure I understand? What to do at a given moment? Like what videos to make? Or like what move to make Mario do during a TAS? (4) It should be able to be done on actual hardware. The only exception to that is strats that make use of PU movement without fixing the camera. (5) My perfectionism drives my patience. I won't rest until every A press that can be saved has been saved. :)
