I think he isn't dead rather very badly injured and still has to be killed. They probably didn't show that cause Letting it to imagination was a great choice. And no the reality doesn't branch out rather the entire experience resets. It's also the same thing in the manga as well but it's explained a bit more complicatedly. It's a simple ctrl+z.

The movie also explains how it was all rushed to production because the human race was nearing extinction... Losing battle after battle and only won when she used those weapons. As a result.. There's no way he has the physicality of an infantry officer. His body getting reset every time means he never builds muscle or endurance. He could have the knowledge of Achilles and Hector but he's still a media officer with no training.

I always wonder what happens in the timeline where he dies. Is the time goes on? She shoots him, the next day there is a massacre at Verdun, where she knows that she will die and that humanity have no chance. Her only hope is that in another timeline Cage would succeed. That must be terrifying.

It literally doesn't matter though. If he dies, the day restarts for everybody. And they are all doomed anyway unless he succeeds, so if some bystander gets shot by accident it doesn't matter either.
