    One of Cruise's best. I'm not a huge fan but when he gets it right, boy does he get it right. I'm also impressed that the Angel of Verdun, as stated by the narrator, doesn't wear a skimpy outfit but wears the same armour as everyone else. This is a common complaint of many fantasy films.

      I remember when my dad asked me to watch it with him one day I was like "It's a Tom Cruise action movie, which is not always my favourite, but I like the guy....it's a *modern* action movie, which makes me doubt it's quality...it's Sci-Fi AND war and has Time Travel...I'm not so sure about this."
      But I loved the movie. I really do love Edge of Tomorrow. It's a great, straight-forward action film, with very good action, and told extremely well. And the "Sci-Fi tentacle aliens" were pretty darn memorable and not what you'd expect from something like them nowadays.

    Finally! Someone else (actually several someones) who recognize this as a stellar film. I have probably seen it 12-15 times and love it every single time. The invisible stars of this film are the editors. The editing is is outstanding -- editors are those who actually put the puzzle together and get very little to no recognition for their talent, craft and craftiness. Putting pieces and snippets from several actors... several locations... several timelines... and several attitudes/feelings (humor, dread, fear, boredom) -- and still move the narrative forward without being boring or confusing is a daunting task. Bravo! Love this film.

    "It's the first tiny crack in her steely exterior." I think this comes slightly earlier (6:02 in this video). During the train/fail/killed montage, we get three quick cuts of Rita shooting Cage. In the first, she's cold and determined; in the second, she's wide-eyed and looks a little horror stricken; and in the third, she's looking away from Cage, unable to watch him die. It's the first we see of the pain she feels watching him die, and then we get the same from Cage. But ultimately, while she can't bear to watch it, she continues on because she values the mission more, whereas it's Cage that tries to stop her from dying at the expense of the mission.

Wouldn't it have made more sense for him to just die???" I loved AYNIK's ending but I'm actually glad that this wasn't left with a sequel hook. If a manga/comic/book wants to end on a "Adventure goes on" ending, it's fairly easy for me to accept but in a movie (and often games too), it often feels like my time was just a bit wasted. HTTYD got away with it because the story was finished and each new one was it's own tale, like it was Hiccup telling them over a few days but that's often in the minority for me.

    First off, I really liked the movie and this review, as well. Thumbs up! If anyone has already mentioned this, I apologise in advance:
    Cruise now has the blood of the Omega, triggering a reset to him waking up in the helicopter. Cool. Let's say he goes and meets Rita, they fall in love, live happily ever after - growing old together, he reaches 90 years old and passes away in an old folks home.
    Does everything reset to the helicopter wake up, again? Is the world stuck in a loop that they can never get out of? If in 3 years he dies in a plane crash with Rita on the way to their honeymoon in Bora Bora, is there another reset? Can the world never move past his life?
    Just wondering...

    • @siddhantsharma7728
      @siddhantsharma7728 7 років тому +64

      frankpinmtl I believe he does not go in past but goes in a different universe with a timeline same upto helicopter ride. So HE will forever, but world will move forward with Cruise dead. But if this is true He and Rita failed to save the world and just created a new universe where they won. In that case for final universes war to be won, there are tens of thousands of universes where they lost the war.

    • @FrequentArtist

      I thought only Alphas dying resets the day not Omega? Also he would probably lose the blood before that even happens. Also also, even if somehow he saved his blood, and he did reset without being the Alpha, he would only reset the last day of his life, not his entire life. But yea, I am pretty sure the resetting ended once he became the Omega, there are no more Alphas and he is the Omega. So life just continues normally for everyone I guess.

    • @invictuz4803
      @invictuz4803 6 років тому +6

      What does being the Omega mean if the Omega's only ability is controlling the army which is now gone? I mean the Omega does nothing without its army so it's kind of a pointless statement.

    • @lonk9183
      @lonk9183 6 років тому +36

      frankpinmtl I know this comment was well over a year ago, but think about it.
      The omega resets the day whenever it loses a battle so that it can rearrange its tactics and hopefully not lose a single alpha. In its eyes, losing an alpha=defeat. It's clearly only alerted when it loses an alpha, so that's the only indication that the omega would get that tells it to reset the day. So it's clear that cage is an alpha through the movie.
      The ending shows that the omega doesn't have the power to do it for ITSELF, just the alphas. If it did have this power then the movie wouldve been much longer than it is. It's a plot device so that the villain can actually be defeated, but it remains relevant. So I believe that cage would be able to live a happy life.

      It did poorly at the US box office, I wonder why? Some people say that it's because the Americans are tired of Tom Cruise but I believe it has more to do with the fact that any new sci-fi franchise that's not based on anything well known will run a huge risk of underperforming in the US, regardless of the reviews. People are just accustomed to spending all their yearly movie money on Marvel and Disney, they ain't got the resources for anything else.

    I really loved this movie. And if they are giving us a prequel, I hope it's just as good. I assume it would revolve around Rita getting the power in Verdun. It could also have a very interesting dynamic with her previous love interest who died so many times, but when she finally lost the power he wasn't alive at the end of it. It would also be interesting to see her change as a person into the character we see in this movie. And it would even make sense for Cage to pop up on TV a few times in the movie (so long as they don't overdo it). They could show the story of Dr Carter (think that was his name. the mechanic) and his fall in reputation.

      Better than this is a _very_ big call. Also, I haven't seen _good_ manga in at least a long time; I used to watch everything that came out back when I was a kid in the 90's but every time friends have tried to get me back into it over the last few years with recommendations everything I've seen has been lame and childish. What's more, it probably always was, it's just that back then I was immature enough not to be able to spot the obvious lack of depth. If All You Need is Kill is the exception to that fairly solid record I'd be very surprised.

    To talk about your theory. I agree with most of it, but I think it should more be seen as an immune response, which the doctor/inventor alludes to. It's very much like the most basic form of life: To feed and multiply. And just like evolution, its time reset ability is the equivalent of mutations. Each reset (generation) alters the path for success (genetic code) a tiny bit. Very much like Tom Cruise's character is Groundhog Day'ing to everything that is happening until he finds a solution, the Omega has been using the same sort of Groundhog Day'ing to solve its goal for all the worlds that is has conquered, stripped and escaped from. It exists until it wins.
    There's no higher consciousness. No brain or leader. It's simply an organism that eventually evolved to a point where its survival relies on its ability to solve every encounter by flipping back time due to sensing failure and trying again with minor alterations each time. Alpha's might die, not because of a mistake or imminent failure, but by sheer coincidence. Lightning might strike an Alpha and kill it, thus resetting time. But, just like evolution, it's random: some mutations are good, some are bad and the genes will just have to try again and again.
    It'd say that the Omega exists outside of time, too, so that it can reset and do small alterations each time until a path is found. So during the ending when the grenades explode inside of the Omega, it resets time, but since whatever is inside that shell seems to exist "outside" of time, it can't reset itself. Just reset the world.
    Last notes of pure speculation: I guess Cage remembers after the last reset, because that Alpha/Omega blood touched him at the end. Omega resets, Cage and the rest of the world resets too, and the Alphas/Mimics reset as well. But the Alphas and Mimics are simply the white blood cells of the Omega. Without a nervous system or "body" to live in, the mimics and Alphas just die. Cage doesn't die after the reset, though. I guess because he's not dependent on the Omega to live.

    • @mobiuscoreindustries
      @mobiuscoreindustries 5 років тому +7

      i agree, another thing i think is wrong was when cage was hit by the alpha before he killed the omega, he didn't get torn appart, only bled out. this is because, from the omega's point of view at the time, cage still had the power, as he didn't see cage lose it directly. as such the omega would not have taken the risk of tearing cage in peices before he bled out. and besides, it didn't see the fact that all the nades had been primed

      1. It was widely agreed by viewers of all ages, even the target audience, that it was a piece of shit.
      2. ..........uhhhh.......*inhales* no that wasn't a good thing, uh......oh I know! It was only 91 minutes long!

    When he can respawn infinite times: breaks his back getting hit and flying 20 feet.
    When he can't respawn: falls 50 feet onto metal stuff and survives.
    This is the only problem I had with the movie. It pushes the idea that humans are pretty fragile when nothing is of any real danger, but once the danger is back, it just forgets and gives Cage hero immortality again.

    1 thing I always forget is that on the final mission. Rita has still only had about half a day with Cage but since she knows he has gone through the same thing, she trusts him soooooooo much, and even kisses him! Shows how much she went through the first time she got the power

    You know, in "All You Need Is Kill" the mimics actually adapt to the hero's strategy, and basically try to counter him whenever they can. Spoiler alert, for those of you that want to read it and haven't done so yet, but in the end the mimics essentially come to the conclusion that they cannot win by taking the invasion and staying on the defensive, thus they launch their own, massive attack on the military base the hero is in.
