One of the best films Cruise ever acted in. Also one of the best depictions of alien life. So disturbingly different, almost no one will be able to understand anything about them.
Loved the way the Tom Cruise portrayed someone so not his usual hero type and the terror he showed when going into battle was subtle but detailed. His transformation into the hero was great. I didn’t know anything about this movie before I watched it and thought it was great.
@@Martin-pb7ts Naaaah he pretty much outpaces Rita by the second half of it. That's not to say she doesn't get her moments but it still is really all about him turning into the typical Tom Cruise good at everything action hero.
no one really thinks from the mimics perspective... they had the time rewind powers the whole time so they may have done this attack 1000s of times already, but each time Cruise was never a threat until that one time.... that one slight deviation that triggered him to pickup the ammo.
The thing I like about Cage is that even though was a terrified, untrained guy thrown into hell, when it came down too it he detonated that claymore with no hesitation. He knew he was screwed and just wanted to take one with him.
@@Krater84 He was incompetent and a toy soldier really, but I wouldn't think an ancient piece like a claymore... nay, a fvcking landmine... that he would think he'd be fine point blank taking it in the face.
I don't know if the japanese manga was like that as well, but that is what makes it such a great story. Even though he gained his powers by chance, he had to take a heroic step to earn it. It wasn't just given to him.
The fantastic thing about this movie is how perfectly they showed that the mimics already know what is going to happen. At 5:29 the mimics dodges everything they shoot it with and then attacks. Cage was only able to kill it because he gains the reset power so the mimics never got to learn what happens
Which means, interestingly enough, in however many other iterations there were before the one where he got the power, this must have been the first time he figured out how to get the safety off. Because very clearly the mimic completely ignored him the entire time. and it was surprised by his shot since the shot actually killed it. So him getting his safety off was the divergence in the timeline that resulted in him getting the power,
I realized now that the thing that caused the timelines to diverge was Cage figuring out to turn off his safety and kill that mimic. That's why Omega came at the scene to know how that mimic died because in previous iterations that mimic would've killed everyone with that surprise entry.
Dont know why some people disliked that movie. From my pov its the best action sci-fi of the last decade. And probably the only movie made in the last 10 years which I rewatched like 5 times already.
To be fair, I doubt they had the similar training the female protagonist does. If all the soldiers had that kind of training, each shoulder would at least be able to take down one mimic each.
@@braveheroanimator4166 yeah the J squadron was probably made by realitvely new recruits. Not only that, Rita is also a veteran from Verdun. When she trains Cage, he learns that the optical helmet is basically a distraction and forces you to ignore part of the environment. That's why they become so effective over time.
@@braveheroanimator4166 It's explained in the lignt novel "All you need is kill" (original material) that the suits are basically on autopilot for everyone else. Rita and Cage have trained way more than any soldier, that's why they're able to do all kinds of crazy stuff (sliding, jumping, using the back guns, running around) when everyone else is just walking to their deaths. So yeah, they definitely don't have the kind of training Rita has (which she acquired on the spot at Verdun, upon repeating over and over the battle).
Its wonderful when you realize this isn't the first time the Mimics experience this day. I wonder what the battle looked like the first type. Mimics not prepared. No Anti Air. Didn't know where they were landing. It probably wasn't going that bad for the humans ... at least good enough so the Alpha reset the day.
@@delsmith8140the Mimics knew that they were coming. One of the solders says „they arent supposed to know that we were coming“ or something. Also there are a lot of mimics on that beach. Even then it’s Highly unlikly, if Not impossible, that there are thousands or tens of thousands of them on that beach by chance.
@@delsmith8140 The mimics have a power/tech that allows them to reset the day and fight the battle again, learning from their mistakes, until they reach a winning outcome. The ultimate save scum. Cruise obtains this ability when he kills their leader unit at the end of this clip.
@@SpiGAndromeda Did you watch the film? The entire conceit of the mimics is that they can reset the day until they win with minimal effort, which means in one timeline they didn't know the attack was coming until the day was reset, and moved their forces there to counter it
What I also like is that in the movie as the mimics learn the day they are still slightly altering things on the larger scale. Like at the beginning, up until that point it is likely cage had never figured out how to use his weapons or survived that long. Some adaption of the mimics ended up causing this to happen drawing out the alpha to try and figure out why some of the mimics died.
The thing that occurred to me when they were attacked in the pit is that the mimic didn’t just know where to hide for the ambush, but knew exactly when to attack. It wasn’t a trap for the enemy, but specifically for these enemies in this place at this time.
Great white sharks use the ram effect for getting oxygen, they have to keep swimming. So they don't survive in enclosures, and lots of them attractions tried.
Honestly the design of the Mimics in the film was way better than in the Manga. They're so horrifyingly fast, the way they move so unnatural, they really do sell the idea that these are completely alien beings
Come to think of it, I have never seen a mimic in this movie firing those projectiles in close quarters. Closest thing is during one of the versions of the landing where you see the shots getting spat out of something underground in the dunes, but nowhere else. Are there exclusive artillery drones or something?
This was such a fantastic watch. Great freaking story line. Loved it. Imagine us taking on a new enemy.....We would definitely be confused like this. Would be a frightening thing.
the suits are fast, it’s just no one besides rita and cage no how to fully use them, most if not all these soldiers were drop in with barely enough training to fully use them.
so he's a... causality conductor? muv luv alternative has a similar idea for the protagonist in which time resets everytime the main character is killed and he has to start over again
Since Europe fell so fast (and presumably Asia), the US was the only one to test their latest exo suits, and of course they didn't work when enemies literally have "Load Game" function.
