I find it really nice that you begin every video with a bit of Mandarin. It's a really good way to show off your skills, bring the viewer in Mandarin mood and even do some listening exercise at the same time!
TIP: I basically find those phrase videos, 230 etc, rip the audio to my phone. And listen (at first all the way for a week), then focusing on sections (You can use the A-B loop feature in VLC app, to repeat a section of that audio, till you can pronounce it perfectly, AND know that you're saying). Hope that helps. Just daily practice.

Hi, Luke. I'm a life member of the MBPM, currently on phase 4, level 23. I've been with Youse for about 9 or 10 months, and I have learned lots, but not enough yet to have a basic conversation. While I agree that reading by learning characters is absolutely necessary after learning pronunciation, I believe students would get a boos of ongoing confidence if we learned basic conversational mandarin after learning pronunciation and before learning characters. Jumping into learning characters immediately after the pronunciation mastery course is OK. But you did have the advantage of learning conversational mandarin through Pilmsleur before anything else. This gave you confidence and an adrenalin boost. On top of that, you actually went back to China to learn in full. I did not do the Speak and Repeat Kickstart Mandarin Course after learning pronunciation because that course became available after i started the MBP component. I'm now doing it in tandem with the MBP, but that is hard in terms of time management. I'm elven tempted to pause the MBP to dedicate my time to the kickstart module and finish it before I continue with MBP, if only because after 9 or 10 month I can hardly have a basic conversation in Mandarin. I know the ground up work from MBP will pay off eventually, but not being able to do basic conversations at this stage can be disappointing and demoralising. Don't get me wrong. I love the course and am chugging al9ng with it, but doing some self enquiry on the state of my Mandarin learning, I have concluded that after learning pīnyīn pronunciation, the n3xt step before learning characters should be learning basic conversation without characters, and then do the MBP. Anyway, than you for your video and for this wonderful opportunity to learn Mandarin in possibly one of the most effective ways to do so. ❤
Hi Jeff, first off, thanks for signing up with us. We are constantly working to improve our course offerings, and that's why we launched the Kickstarter course to get you speaking from day 1. Besides that, we have also launched The Phrase Vault, which is another top-down course that is heavy on listening and speaking. Our entire suite of courses are aimed at providing Chinese learners with an all-rounded approach that will give you the most efficient way to achieve fluency, which can be as quick as 4-6 months for some of our members. But do note that I'm not saying it won't take hard work. You'll still have to put in the time to get there. We're just minimizing the detours and getting you there in the most direct and efficient route possible. We do hope that you keep at it, and feel free to jump around between the courses to see what suits you best; no single course is one-size-fits-all, and some may find one approach easier than the other. So find out which course you're most comfortable with, and get the most mileage you can out of it before shifting gears and trying another one. Good luck on your journey to learning Chinese!
@@MandarinBlueprint Thank you for your kind reply, Luke. I am sorry if I was not clear in my comment. All I was trying to say is that I believe a newcomer to the MBP method would probably be better off starting with the habits bootcamp course (as I did), next doing the pronunciation mastery course, then the listening and repeat Mandarin kickstarter course, and then (and only then) start the MBP course. I have bought the Phrases Vault, but will use it in conjunction with the MBP, as they are linked. That’s why I bought it. As for doing the hours, I’m with you. I do my reviews in the morning before I leave for work, and I do my studying in the evenings. I listen to immersion audios during the day at work, and I read elementary materials on DUChinese and now the Chairman Bao’s materials. Anyway, I am hopeful to be able to have elementary conversations in Mandarin sometime soon. Once again, thank you for your reply. Much appreciated. 谢谢 你🙏。
Personally for me, habbit trackers are the best way to get anxiety. 😅 the need to tick something off is really stressing haha I prefer doing what I like without worrying too much about building habbits. Focusing more on purpose and sense has given me more benefit than artificial programming of my behaviour. Also I do not have much trust in habbits that can be established without a really significant reward. I was waking up at 3-4 am for many years and have not developed any habbit. Now I am going to bed at 3-4 am 😅
Feel you might be talking to me about the top heavy part. I'm interested in speaking Chinese Mandarin. And so have been focused on just learning those everyday phrases and pronunciation. Then using the 2000 words or so videos to drill down to the single words. Took me about 3 months of daily practice to master the 1st 230 phrases video. Currently on the 2nd 230 phrases videos. But also mixing in with the individual words, so have 4 months to complete those. Then I'll find more phrases and words. But you're saying it would be better to do the f'in characters part too...which I believe is unnatural. So I focus on how any native learns. They can speak BEFORE they can write it. That's my method or theory for super fast progress. And it's holding up, so far...
Hi Luke, thanks for this video. My native language is spanish and I learnt english, french and italian. I was kinda terrified in choosing chinese as my 4th foreigner language (was trying to choose between German, Arabic and Chinesse) but thanks to you I've realised that the process is not different from learning other foreign language; I feel totally related to your journey in learning chinesse. I made lot of mistakes learning english (my first foreign language) and I struggled a lot. When I learnt french I didn't make the same mistakes, I had already a path to follow and my 3er language was even better, so much easy. For me worked really well first learning few basic vocabulary and then full immersion. At the begining I only understood barely 5% of the video or movie, and little by little my comprehension started to increase and it's really motivating beeing aware of your achivements. For example, I watched a Netflix serie called Lupin in french, and I've seen that serie about 5 times, and each time it was a novelty for me because I was able to understand things that I didn't catch the previous time. I tell myself things like "congratulations Liz, now you understood about 80%". I do love Harry Potter, and I read and listened to almost the 7 books in all my languages, I don't get tired of reading/listening them and, as I know the story (almost by heart now) is easier for me identifying and asociating new words and expressions. It will surely help me with chinesse too. I'm going to continue doing my pre-learning research of chinesse, and in about few weeks I'll be joining Blue Print. Btw, I love the passion you put in this language :) See you soon.

@@MandarinBlueprint Thanks i listened to the video and read the article, very insightful. One question on the article though. Phil says it's more important to get more more input/messages in a certain time, so don't analyse every word or sentence you don't know. Should I still make flashcards then from the words/characters I didn't know when reading something and study those (repeat those) or just keep reading as much as possible cause doing flashcards and (practising them out of context) also takes time? Isn't making flashcards and practising them from the words i don't know from a article or book also a bit of over analysing and time consuming. I hope my question is clear.
