I Made My E55 AMG Shift Super-Fast With An Easy Mod That Works On Any 5-Speed Mercedes Transmission

  • I installed another modified transmission valve body in my 2003 E55 AMG and it's a seriously nice modification. I had installed one a few weeks ago and although it shifted quickly, it was too harsh on the downshift while coasting. This valve body will work with any 722.6, 5-speed transmissions and the larger transmission pan you see in the video is not needed.
    Before you order understand this is still a performance valve body. You will still feel the coasting downshifts but they aren't as hard as the first modified valve body. I recommend this for performance-oriented cars that are raced, or if you want faster shifts. If you have a daily driver E320 for example, I wouldn't do this mod. Just enjoy the cushy luxury shifts.

    Purchased my 2006 E55 in 9/18 with 100984 miles shortly after watching your channel. Today it is just shy of 105000. I have been admiring the E55 since they were new. I would have never thought it possible to purchased and maintain a E55 if it wasn’t for this informative channel. This car puts a smile on my face every time I drive it. Thank to you Alex for taking time to post this great content.

    So I just did this upgrade, love it. But I actually got a little class from the guy who makes these valve body mods. So long story short it does not make the car shift faster. It shifts sooner…
    you gain higher line pressures, and since this occurs, it also cuts down on the heat that can be created from sloppy stock shifts that can wear down clutches and bands inside the automatic transmission. the longer it takes to shift under power, the more heat is created.
    Now he did say multiple people have said it helped with their track times, but it’s hard to say if this mod alone did because of so many other factors and it will be very extensive to really test the science behind the theory.
    Either way it’s a good supporting mod to have especially with heavily modded cars, will help extend trans life and who knows maybe it does factor in on the track, I’d like to think so but when I got the lesson I understood the purpose he built these for are not to make the car faster which is why he does not advertise it that way.

    Hi Alex, Phil from Sydney Australia, luuuuuuuuvvvvvv your channel(yes i subscribed) I have a cls55 2006 and your channel is extremely informative. Topping the fact is you were a mercedes benz master tech(sooooo much better than watching fred say"er yes heres how i change this" without proper training) thanks for your awesome content. im about to order some parts from victory rd performance for the cooling system(intercooler kit), black engine & trans mounts along with the long tube headers kit, trans valve body-vrp and 76mm supercharger pulley and idler kit(im scared dont have a hoist-might have to buy one) Awesome mods for amazing value performance enhancement. Im a Jaguar man and V8 muscle too but this car is simply amazing. Loved the CLS since it came out. My cls55amg was $250K AUD & picked it up for a disgustingly cheap price 16 years later. I was going to build a 500hp V12 for my Jaguar and since finding the cls55 I can have more power for 1/4 the price... Thanks for your content, honest and practical advice. You are a light in the world of e55 car mods. I felt for you when you sold your baby(e55) but i can appreciate too many cars. My collection is a little more humble. I have an original V12 Jaguar coupe, my wifes daily driver a Jaguar Xj6(x350), a chev dually (454 4spd auto big block), a lexus sc400 v8, 2 aussie muscle cars (Ford xr8 utes 5.4l 300hp work cars), a landrover discovery2 td5 4wd and a boat(toomuch i know) i feel your pain. so to finance my upgrades im going to sell the lexus and land rover. Please keep the amg content coming and i love your tesla p85d. most intense car ive ever driven(i ordered the new cybertruck) Love from Australia thanks heaps. without your channel i wouldnt be game to do the mods to my cls55, but now woohoo(its a big fat track car :D)

    Alex b/c of your E55 videos you have made me fall in love with the MB 722.6 transmission. My long term build project is a Pro Touring Caprice 9C1-Police Package which will have a twin turbo 5.3 liter LS conversion. Like I said your videos got me jonesing for a NAG1/722.6 over the usual 4L80e which is the choice for high HP LS swaps. The 722.6 is so much more advanced than the 4L80e : it can handle nearly 1000 crank hp, it has engine braking in all forward gears(which is great for auto-X and road racing), its ratios are close together and it weighs far less than a 4L80e. It seems a lot of Jeep guys retain their NAG1's when they do LS swaps so there's hope and place to start.

    I learned a valuable lesson with these valve bodies and the conductor plates last weekend. After doing a full transmission service and replacing the conductor plate and connector, my E55 would not start. When reassembling the valve body I noticed that the shift position ‘fork’ lineup pin was sticking out a bit but otherwise everything went back together fine and I could not understand why it wouldn’t turn over even with a fully charged battery. After a few hours research (and ordering a starter from FCP Euro) I decided to pull everything back apart the next morning and see if I had, in fact, done something wrong or missed something. This is what I discovered upon inspection.
    The location of the long pin that aligns the shift position fork corresponds to a small tab on the conductor plate and the pin basically bottoms out on that tab. I visually inspected the old conductor plate and noticed that it did appear that the tab was missing and only a keen eye would notice that it was shorter than the one on the new CP. This very small tab had broken off in this lineup hole and when the pin was reinserted and the detent fork bolted back up, it pushed the conductor plate up off of the valve body just enough to break contact with the neutral safety switch, resulting in nothing from the starter when you hit the key. Once this broken tab was extracted form the valve body everything went back together in a textbook fashion and the appropriate amount of fluid added it is running and shifting perfectly and coupled with new motor and trans mounts it drives like brand new again! I got everything at FCP Euro so I have a lifetime warranty on everything I am doing to maintain my own vehicle and with the help of Alex and and this channel, my soon-to-be classic will be running for many years to come. Thanks Alex!

      @dexterjsullen 4 роки тому

      If its minor harsh then its normal, cause mines does it like the first 5 mins of driving first gear acts sluggish, and I already did a valve body,filter, clean soilenoids & and change pan oil(not a full flush but most of the fluid) shifts quick for a 5 speed made in 2004. Not as quick as modern 600hp cars but I can't complain.

    I have the SHR valvebody in my 2013 charger 392, and using HP tuners I had my tuner soften the 2-1 and the 3-2, quicken the 2-3 and 3-4 and remove 3rd gear converter lockup. After the some driving the car shifts great, and is decently smooth. It still downshifts firm but is much closer to stock and shifts very fast at WOT. Too bad they cant be easily tuned on the older cars.

    For those of us who know absolutely nothing about how an automatic transmission works, when you have the valve body removed but all the parts installed would be a great opportunity for a bit of education. Watching you unbolt and bolt things is entertaining and all, but the point where I wanted some elucidation was time-lapse free UA-cam music.

    My Chrysler 300 has the same transmission. I had a terrible time with rough shifting until I replaced the conductor plate. I also installed a device called a Tranzformer to the TCM. I turned down my torque management way down and my shift firmness to around 15%. I turned off the adaptation and left it at stock values so it stays responsive. The shifting happens very quickly and there is zero hesitation.

      @@tylercouture216 You will need to get one and install to see the difference. I have been tinkering more with my 300 more. I bought a HP Tuner so I can modify my engine and transmission tune. What got this 722. 6 really scary was turning down the torque slip. From the factory these have a lot of slip programmed into each gear which causes too much unused engine power to be lost. Now you don't wanna turn down the percentages to 0 or the performance will suck. Not much more I can elaborate about my findings because of my unique setup.

    Southern Hot Rod also makes a kick ass valve body for MB, can do factory or modified. I have an 06 Magnum SRT8 with a NAG1 and opted for the MOD6 with a set of MB blue top solenoids, 3000 stall converter and a MTCM, best $$ I’ve spent on the car to date, a total monster. Shifts are crisp and clean, downshifts a little harsh, but hopefully smoothes out the more I drive it.

    08:15 That would be my question:
    Can you program the ECU to rev match at the downshifts.
    The CLK 63 AMG already used a 7-Speed but didnt rev match at downshift. The newer E63 Coupes did that and it is a huge improvement in driveability.
    Finding someone who is able to programm rev matching into the older style 5- and 7-Speed transmission would be great

    Which Tyres (Tires) are you running on the E55 Alex? I recently fitted some Continental Sportcontact 6s and the increased grip is very noticeable. And it handles better (flatter) as well. The are some seriously good hoops being made now by Conti, Michelin and now Goodyear (Eagle F1s) for these sorts of cars.

    Speaking of transmission, please confirm this reset technique I’ve read in multiple forums/videos. Does holding the gas pedal completely down with the key turned to position 2 for 15 seconds reset the shift points? I’ve noticed much smoother shifting after doing it but a bunch of service lights appeared after trying it..
    the e55 looks amazing!

    Do you prefer RTV or gasket for a trans pan? I changed the fluid on my truck, and cleaning the old RTV (and waiting for the new RTV to set some before filling) was a pain. I'd much rather have a gasket, for when I need to get back in there (no drain plug, and two filters under the pan)
    Could you have moved to a flat gasket with this pan if you had wanted to?

    Alex, your content is the best. A quick question. How does the stock dipstick tool work with the new, higher capacity, pan? Shouldn't there be a special one for the new pan?

    • @kingcrumpet
      @kingcrumpet 4 роки тому +4

      It's only the upper level the dipstick measures, so there's no need for any other dipstick. The dipstick doesn't care that there's added oil capacity below the upper level, if that makes sense.

    • @joesteven5396
      @joesteven5396 3 місяці тому

      hello! if you look at the transmission tool dipstick ,the black plastic strip that measures the oil at 35C and 80C ,stops in a notch at the top of the transmission conductor plate .Its hard to explain whitout seeing the plastic conductor plate ,it has a small plastic tube built in ,that the dipstick goes through and stops it from going all the way down to reach the bottom of the transmission oil pan ,so it measures like the other guy said only the top filling on the fluid level .If you dont see any fluid on the dipstick ,you might still have 2 liters of fluid below the end of the dipstick ,if the transmission is cold ,transmission fluid expands with temperature .
