  • Manufacturers put a ton of research and development into air intake design, but when it comes to improving airflow over what comes on stock on your vehicle, is that something that can feasibly be done by someone without an engineering background? It sure is, and this is how you do it! Join us as we design and custom-fab new cold air intakes for ‪@LegitStreetCars‬ E55 AMG

_Alex's E55 AMG wagon is definitely one keeper of a Benz. Glad FMU is taking the time to align the cold air intake necessary for maximum horsepower gains over the standard factory setup. I can see that you're getting more comfortable on camera O.J., (here's the secret to making your instructional videos shine more, relax). Your shop is clearly one of the very best in the Midwest with you at the helm. Looking forward to the next video for sure from Fluid MotorUnion._

That weistec e55 with all of the ugly welds on the intake is my old car! The “upgraded” throttle body and intake that comes with the Weistec kit is only 82mm throttle body and roughly 3.25” intake piping. When I went stacked pulley, I went for the Cheesebay Hellcat 105mm throttle body and built up the “factory” elbow with weld and hogged out the inside so it was smooth. The car made 700whp on a Dynocom AWD Dyno in 4th gear with no meth. Have you guys dynod that car on your Dyno? Curious to see how it’s doing. The eBay throttle body would cause issues every now and then, and had to be relearned with a key cycle, but it made WAY more power. I sold the car before I could put a “real” throttle body on it and clean up the welds on the outside or just make a new inlet elbow.

Keep these coming, OJ. THIS is what I like to see on YT, and you are an excellent communicator. No BS, just rational, well thought out info. I appreciate what you’re doing, and I hope you get enough response to these to make it worth your time and effort. That’s a serious facility, with real customers, and if this doesn’t make sense financially, we get it. We won’t LIKE it, but we get it.

Smooth is best, outside air is best, away from water is the upmost important. Point the inlet side if the intake to that direction within the constraints of your packaging engine bay etc you'll get the best results. Stock intake inlet for mine was right from the inner fender. BUT it was drawing in the hotter than outside ambient temperatures from tire heat and ambient air from the engine bay via heat soak. Now I have a 3D Printed ram air inlet from the grill a slight bend as a "rain deflector" so any rain while driving will not directly get sucked in, then it goes right into the stock box. FYI I live in Florida, rain is a daily thing 90% of the year. been on for most of this years rainy season ZERO issues. The rest of the system was fine, the inlet just sucked (pun intended)
So far whatever the outside air temps for the day is, its within 5-10 degrees above it at idle. So when its 64, which it is now. It pulls in ~70 degree air at speed read via the air intake temp sensor.

Nicely done and explained! When I put a 363 engine into my fox I had to redo and rethink my air intake setup. Space constraints are always the limiting factor. I was able to squeeze in a 4 inch carbon fiber setup after trial and error with aluminum piping. I do not get any heatsoak, and it provides plenty of filtered air feeding into the 105mm throttle body. Once again, great job guys, the air intake looks awesome, can't wait to see the final result!

Sign me up for the FMU University channel. This was great for knuckle dragger like myself. I’m going to assume no question is a stupid question in this class so here goes: Could the same be done with something like a filtered hood scoop ? I’m sure it would be much more work trying to design a hood that keeps with lines of the Mercedes, I’m just curious if you get the same volume of air going that route ?

    Just a clarification for @6:41
When he's holding the k&n mass air flow sensor holder and mentions there's not an airflow straightening device, this is incorrect.
That holder uses a cartridge style mass air flow sensor. This type of sensor has its own straightener and very well defined inlet and outlet of the cartridge itself. So it gets an accurate representation of the air flow through that pipe without having to have specific straighteners for the entire pipe. It gets the mass air going through the sensor itself and then the computer will then extrapolate the entire tube getting that same amount of air through it.
This means that on any ECU that uses this style of cartridge mass air flow sensor, if you have the ability to remap the factory tables, you can change the diameter of the tube and then adjust the tables to the new tube diameter.
So it's a benefit. But I mostly wanted to point out that the air flow management for straightening the air going through the sensor itself is located within the cartridge itself and not part of the tube. They're actually are straighteners there which he implies there's not. I know he means there's not straighteners in the tube but I just wanted it to be clear because I thought it was a little unintentionally misleading.

I would have liked to see the following mods: Bigger TB, a kind of airbox infront of the TB with some kind of velocity stack inside or at least some kind of radius into the TB. I do not like the design of the Y-pipe and to me it does not look optimal. Also it would have been interesting to see a direct comparison with a dyno run with no air filters inside their housings. Cheers.

Wondering your thoughts on this. I have an 08 g8 GT. NA L76 6.0L V8… My intake was just a cheap spectra design. I had added a 90° elbow, another 4in. pipe and a K&N filter. Basically a Fender well intake. My tuner said he didn’t see any restrictions. With headers, catless x-pipe no mufflers, the car made 363rwhp/389tq… some other g8 owners think that I may be losing power. They think I should buy the VCM OTR style intake which sits on top of the radiator. It’s a Ram air design. I appreciate any thoughts you may have

OJ What air intake system have you built for the C32 AMG I am presently running Needswings air intake on one of my C32's and SL55 AMG on the other, On the vehicle I have the needswings system I have VRP short headers, 64mm SC pulley, ECU tune and I am happy with the performance but would like to squeeze more out of the vehicle. The project vehicle running the SL55 system only has a 64mm SC pulley and no tune at the moment. Plan on installing E85 conversion and 550 cc injectors on the one vehicle that has VRP headers but wondering if I will need to revisit the needswings system as I may run into the same issue. Any pointers?

    • @FluidMotorUnion
      @FluidMotorUnion  3 місяці тому

That intake would run into an issue with an aftermarket supercharger. With stock supercharger, depending on level of mods you might see a restriction on the 55.
Based on quick calcs on my end - the 55 seems to be restricted with that intake.
Ultimately you need a dyno for definitive answers. But if you’re interested in an intake - shoot us a message for more info!
