Just followed this step by step. Fantastic tutorial! You made a tedious task that I was dreading doing, a very simple thing after rebranding my business and changing my website. Thank you so much for sharing.
Well well done! Thorough, clear, and supportive 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾. Such a superb example of how you deliver information and instructions online. This was very helpful. I didn’t even have any idea that this was possible (having secondary domains in my workspace) until the need arose for me and I searched for the solution. So thank you.

This video was REALLY helpful! There are a few differences that I had to look up on my own because my domains are through Squarespace; outside of those, however, this gave me exactly what I needed to get my Workspace changed over, so thank you very much!
This video is amazing! I wish I could watch this before I tried the same by myself. I spent almost entire day but could not figure out how to activate the new e-mail address after the new domain was added and verified by Google. Thank you very much for your kind and wonderful instruction.
So we initially bought our domain through Google domains. According to this video at 11:43, we cannot change the primary domain because of that. What do we do in that scenario? Is that still the case after the domains Google transferred to Squarespace?
Hi Kevin, that is a good question. I have asked myself the same. I don't know if after transferring to Squarespace will continue applying the same restriction. In any case, you are still able to add the secondary domain and change the email address for all your users. The original domain will remain as primary, but it should work fine in most cases. Thank you.
It will still work, however, it is suggested to add all MX records that Google requires. By the way, new Google Workspace deployments only require one MX records. This is for GW that were setup on 2023 or later. Thank you.
I had added a domain as an alias domain. And I was having trouble figuring out why I couldn’t change it to the primary domain. Now I believe I understand why thank you for the clear communication. Now I have a better idea of what I need to do. Which is it looks like removing the old domain and then adding it back as a secondary domain, or rather the primary after adding it as a secondary. 😮
Thank you for your comment. I suggest removing the domain that you added as alias, then add it again as a secondary. Then you will be able to switch the new secondary to primary. The Original will become secondary. Thanks.
@@itwithcarlos - Everything seemd to work great. In fact since I had already added the domain, MX records, DKIM etc, when I added it back it was a pretty quick switch over. The biggest issue users have had was solved by shift / refresh. Since Workspace automatically made the old Primary domain an alias, we still get mail from the old primary domain. I may need to have users have the ability to send from the old domain. Looking in to that. Thank you for setting up this video as it made the process have some certainty - we always want to receive client emails. 😁
Can you please make a video on how to switch domain, but also be able to still login to platforms that have "login with Google". When I made the switch, these platforms now do not have access to my accounts logged in with the old domain through the login with Google feature. This is very problematic since I have too many accounts like this, and couldn't possibly transfer all of the data over to the new account name.
By following these steps was the email transition seamless as in your inbox from your old primary email. example email threads using the old primary domain still are there and you can respond easily in now with the new primary domain. another example if someone emails the old email domain does it come directly to the new one?
You start with accessing your existing Google Workspace admin panel (where your old domain is already verified and working), than you add your additional (new domain) as indicated in the video. Thank you!
Just curious, but all the users files in Google drive are still accessible when logging in with the new e-mail address correct? ALSO, I have a couple of UA-cam channels that are under my secondary domain, I just want to make sure I'm not going to mess that up by switching my primary domain too.

Thank you, this is really helpful! Just have one question: I lost access to my old domain, so I had to switch my email to a new domain. What will happen to my alias email address if someone creates the same email on the old domain?
It depends on where the old domain's MX record is pointing to. It also depend if the domain is still active (renewed it). If it was working on GW and you haven't changed your old domain's DNS records, then you should be able to receive those emails. It can be determined by looking domain's DNS records.

I understand that a full backup will help, just need to understand about the domain change impact using a client. Thanks again
If the users/accounts are configured as IMAP, then all email history should be on the server and no backup is required. This is not the case for POP since most data is only stored locally in the user's device. A backup is necessary when using POP. I suggest configuring the accounts again in Outlook as a new email account. Thank you.

Great Video, we are rebranding so how can I chenge my primary domain when google does not allow it? or what would be the best way to use the new domain for emails?
You can't make your new domain your primary domain, however, you can still change your email address to be with the secondary domain and even log in with your new email address (with the secondary domain). Some Google documentation says it is not possible, but I just tested and it works. So at the end of the day, you can make your email accounts to be with your secondary domain while keeping the primary domain unchanged. Hope it make sense. Very simple to understand, thank you for sharing this video If I buy a new Google Workspace from a reseller, can I migrate out of my current Workspace (from Google) and continue to receive emails on the old domain?
In this case, I suggest transferring the current Google Workspace to the reseller. This will make a smooth transition of all your data with no risk. There is a special and easy process for this case, the reseller will need to provide their reseller identifier and you will be able to generate a transfer token, The reseller will be able to transfer the account for you. Hope it helps, thank you.
Hi. Thanks for this. Question, do I need to create a different email address before proceeding to purchase a new domain name? Or I can purchase another domain name using the same email address I used in my old domain name? Pls enlighten me 🥹 many thanks.
@@itwithcarlos appreciate it a lot! I have one last question please! 🥹 Referring to google requirements in changing primary domain, what do they meant by “You cannot change primary domain if you purchased your domain when you signed up for Google Workspace” ?????? ⁉️⁉️ In my case, we purchased our primary domain name in Google domains.. So, will I be able to switch domains or no? Is it okay if I buy in squarespace? Many thanks. Appreciate your channel a LOT!!🤍
Buying your other domain from Squarespace could be a good idea since Google is also moving all domains (including your current domain) to Squarespace. Now, in regard to changing your primary domain, Google does not allow you to change it if the current primary domain was purchased from Google Domains, however, you can still add a new domain as secondary and change all your email addresses to the new domain. You can also create new email accounts with the secondary domain. Your old domain will remain as primary. It can't be change@@jmcrescent
Thanks alot Carlos! One question: I still want to receive emails that are send to my old domain, as many business partners know this email address. In 3 or 4 months, whenever everybody is used to the new name and e-mail address, I can delete the old domain, right?
Yes, as long as you keep you renew your old domain, keeps it DNS records and don't remove it from Google Workspace, all the users will continue receiving emails that are sent to the old domain. If you remove it in the future, you will stop receiving emails in the old domain. I suggest to keep it for a longer time. Thank you.
@@itwithcarlos I am happy to report that if all your steps were followed, there is no issue whatsoever. All of the accounts automatically update with existing google sign in accounts.
Hi, I found your videos very helpful, thank you. But this time, as I understood, I can't change my domain name because I got it when I registered with Google Workspace. Is there any possible way to change the name anyway?
The restriction that you will find when your domain is registered with Google is to switch the primary domain name, however, you can still change the username or email address for any user with the secondary domain. Thank you.
Hey Carlos, I get an error message saying I'm not allowed to change the primary domain. The error message lists potential reasons why it might not be possible. The only reason that might make sense that I have purchased my current primary domain when I set up google workspace. Do you know what I can do to solve this problem?

Hi Carlos! Thanks for the outstanding video! Regarding domains, when I switched the 2ndary domain to the primary domain, I was, and still am, the only user/Admin) in each domain (and each domain has the same email listed). Both domains are verified, and both are NOT Activated with Gmail. Do I need to activate Gmail only for the primary domain, and then change the old email to have the primary domain? Can I change the email's username, also?
Not activated with Gmail, means the MX record have not been updated yet. The MX record determine where the emails are going to be routed. When you update de MX for the primary domain, your GW account will receive emails that are addresses to the primary domain. Then same apply to the secondary domain. When your GW has two domains (primary and secondary), you can change your email address (or username) and any time. Hope it respond to your questions. Thank you very much!
Hi, if you are referring to hosting sites for your customers within your Google Account, you would just need to update the A record for such domains. If you are referring to transferring domain to Google Domains, then I suggest you contact Google Domains support. Thank you.
Hi Carlos, Before I started working for my company, they attempted to do this but instead of choosing the new domain to be a secondary domain, they chose it to be an alias domain. Because of this, i cannot make the new domain my primary. Is there anyway to undo this?
No, you can't change it if the domain was purchased from Google, however I know Google is transferring all domains to Squarespace, so maybe that restriction may go away in the future when this transfer is completed, just I guess! Thank you.
Thank you Carlos. Exactly what I needed. Just a couple of quick questions: 1) what if the new domain already has a google workspace account (does this account need to be deleted ?) and 2) what happens to google drive, calendars, shared things...any change there ???. Thank you very much.
Hi Francisco, thank you for your comment. 1. It does not need to be deleted, but you will need to remove the domain from the original GW account before you can add it to the other account. 2. Here is a Google article that explains the impact on every item when changing users' email address (domain) support.google.com/a/answer/2622985 Hope it helps, thanks again!
I think you can. Actually, Google is transferring all their domain to Squarespace, so you should be able to keep your domain even if you cancel Google Workspace.
Oh interesting! Thanks! I got confused because with the domain from Google I had to pay for the whole year. And Google Workspace is monthly. And after playing around with it, I actually don't need all the Workspace features but a domain is nice so I can hire out and have my workers use the domain name. @@itwithcarlos

After changing the primary domain and updating the users' email addresses to the new/primary domain, can they still SEND email from the old domain's email addresses?
Hi Kevin, yes, they can. Users may need to configure "send as" within their email settings in Gmail. Thank you.
thank you! step by step and very clear. abrazo
Thank you, I appreciate your comment. Have a nice day!
Wonderful video.. I have a question teacher. What happens to our mail from the former email domain?. Hope the mails still remains?
Yes, all the email history remain in your mailbox and the old email address becomes an alias. Hope it helps. Thank you!
Really helpful! Thanks so much!
Glad it was helpful! thank you.
Excellent explanation very helpful video 😇

Great video Carlos! If I already have both domains verified and emails set up on the domain I want to make primary, I don't lose those email addresses I have set up and working on the domain I want to make my primary domain, correct? Or am I missing something!
Thank you for your comment, emails and files remains on each account after the domain change.

What is the impact on Google Drive? When users log in to Drive with their updated account, after changing the primary domain, are all their documents/folders/shared drives just the same as they were before the changeover?
Hi Tim, I haven't test it but according to Google, shared documents remain the same.

What if I currently have the second domain as an alias and secondary domain?
if you have the domain as an alias domain, you need to remove it and add it again as a secondary domain. Then you can make the secondary domain your primary domain. Thank you.
@@itwithcarlos Thanks. Now I'm trying to delete the secondary domain and I'm getting this error: We were unable to delete this domain because it has users or aliases. Please confirm all users and aliases with email addresses at [secondary domain] are deleted and retry.
I thought I deleted all the user and group aliases and the test domain also. How can I find which one I'm missing?
Very simple to understand, thank you for sharing this video
If I buy a new Google Workspace from a reseller, can I migrate out of my current Workspace (from Google) and continue to receive emails on the old domain?
In this case, I suggest transferring the current Google Workspace to the reseller. This will make a smooth transition of all your data with no risk.
There is a special and easy process for this case, the reseller will need to provide their reseller identifier and you will be able to generate a transfer token, The reseller will be able to transfer the account for you.
Hope it helps, thank you.
@@itwithcarlos Thank You 😊
Thank you this video helped so much!

Hi. Thanks for this. Question, do I need to create a different email address before proceeding to purchase a new domain name? Or I can purchase another domain name using the same email address I used in my old domain name? Pls enlighten me 🥹 many thanks.
You can purchase the domain another domain using the same email address with your old domain. Please let me know if you still have any questions.
@@itwithcarlos appreciate it a lot! I have one last question please! 🥹
Referring to google requirements in changing primary domain, what do they meant by
“You cannot change primary domain if you purchased your domain when you signed up for Google Workspace” ?????? ⁉️⁉️
In my case, we purchased our primary domain name in Google domains.. So, will I be able to switch domains or no? Is it okay if I buy in squarespace?
We will actually rebrand completely and were planning to buy a new domain name (secondary) and switch it as a primary domain. Do you also have recommendations where can I purchase a new domain name?
Thank you.
Hi , after moving will users be able to access their resorces with no change?

That is a good question. Honestly I haven't tried, sorry! It gives me an idea for another video. Thank you.
@@itwithcarlos I am happy to report that if all your steps were followed, there is no issue whatsoever. All of the accounts automatically update with existing google sign in accounts.

Very helpful video! If we do not update some of our users' emails to the new domain, will they still work with the old domain email address?
Hi Karen, that is correct. You can leave some users with their old email address and they will continue working with no issues. Thank you!
Thank you.
@@itwithcarlos Thank you. Do you have a video on that?
Hey Carlos, I get an error message saying I'm not allowed to change the primary domain. The error message lists potential reasons why it might not be possible. The only reason that might make sense that I have purchased my current primary domain when I set up google workspace. Do you know what I can do to solve this problem?
Hi, there is a restriction to change the primary domain if the domain was purchase when you registered your Google Workspace account. Here is where Google explains the issue that you are seeing:

Here is another article where Google suggests alternatives to changing your primary domain:

Carlos! I need help with this same exact issue. I tried to do this and failed. Will you be willing to help? I no longer receive emails to my old email.
What are the domain in question? You can send me an email to the address in the UA-cam channel. Thank you!
@@itwithcarlos thank you for your response. I sent an email explaining everything and left a voicemail as well :) my name is Coriene.
What will become of accounts that I've set up for various services and platforms, such as Adobe, Grammarly, and Chat GPT, which I registered using an old email address? Will I retain access to these accounts? If yes, would this be via the old or the new email?
You will need to update every service (Adobe, Grammarly, and Chat GPT, etc) with your new email address. Thank you!
Another quick question is,
Does the test domain not being activated have any effect on the switching of the domains?
Hi, if you are referring to the default domain that Google creates within all Google Workspace subscriptions, this domain remains without being affected. Thank you.
Thanks
Don't be annoyed by the numerous amount of questions
Since my switching of domain, my Google Calendar does not show my meeting booked on the calendar again... Please can you help me with a fix for this..

How can I transfer my customer domain name to my Google sites workspace account?
Hi, if you are referring to hosting sites for your customers within your Google Account, you would just need to update the A record for such domains. If you are referring to transferring domain to Google Domains, then I suggest you contact Google Domains support. Thank you.
@@itwithcarlos Thanks!
Hi Carlos,
Before I started working for my company, they attempted to do this but instead of choosing the new domain to be a secondary domain, they chose it to be an alias domain.
Because of this, i cannot make the new domain my primary. Is there anyway to undo this?
The only way I know is to remove the domain from alias domain and add it again as secondary domain. Thank you!
@@itwithcarlos how do you remove the domain as an alias domain
Brilliant tutorial Carlos. But I have one question, can you change your primary domain if the current primary domain was purchased from Google?
No, you can't change it if the domain was purchased from Google, however I know Google is transferring all domains to Squarespace, so maybe that restriction may go away in the future when this transfer is completed, just I guess!
Thank you.
Thanks for the reply.@@itwithcarlos Do you know any other ways to fix the issue?
Will i loose google drive data if i do this?
No, you won't. You can access your Drive with the new username/email. Thank you
Thank you Carlos.
2. Here is a Google article that explains the impact on every item when changing users' email address (domain)

You should not lose any data for switching domains in Google Workspace. Thank you.

Can you have a domain name with Google if you cancel Google Workspace?
I think you can. Actually, Google is transferring all their domain to Squarespace, so you should be able to keep your domain even if you cancel Google Workspace.
Oh interesting! Thanks! I got confused because with the domain from Google I had to pay for the whole year. And Google Workspace is monthly. And after playing around with it, I actually don't need all the Workspace features but a domain is nice so I can hire out and have my workers use the domain name. @@itwithcarlos

This is very helpful! Thank you so much for this tutorial :) Also, in our case, our old domain already expired (we set up our Gsuite via Squarespace), and now using a new one hosted in GoDaddy, will the process be the same in changing the expired domain to the new one inside admin console?
The process is the same regardless of the status of the old domain. Thank you for your comment and feedback!
