I’m interested in consulting and the kind of work you do but I’m actually not big on traveling. BCG is my first choice because I heard they travel less than the other big three firms, is this true? I’m curious if consultants get a choice on whether or not they want to stay home for a project or travel? Of the big three, which firms travel the least?

BCG probably travels less than McK since we use a regional staffing model vs global staffing. If I had to choose I’d say Bain probably travels the least given they do a lot of PE work (you don’t often travel for DDs) in addition to having a more local staffing model

Hey Matt! I have enjoyed your videos. I have a couple questions if you don’t mind. I am about to finish my masters in accounting. I will have both bachelors and masters in accounting. I would say around half way through my masters program I started thinking about going into another sector of business such as finance or management. I have been looking into consulting. I had never really looked into it much as an undergrad. So my two questions are regarding pursuing the consulting field such as management consulting. Is having degrees in accounting going to hurt my chances of getting job offers compared to other applicants who have degrees in such things as business admin, finance, or economics? Also, I live in Mississippi. I am not sure if my state is the best for a career in consulting but maybe I am wrong. Is there any cities in the south you would recommend relocating to that are good places to live if you are a consultant who wants career growth and opportunities? Thanks for all your help!

Hey Jared! I don't think having degrees in accounting will hurt you when applying to consulting, but what is critical will be your explanation of WHY you now want to do consulting instead of accounting. Maybe you were drawn to accounting initially because of the numbers oriented nature of the job, but eventually realized you want to understand how business work from the CEO's perspective (etc., how business decisions are made, what the long term strategy should be) rather than just looking at ledgers all day.
The other big thing is, studying accounting teaches you a lot about financial statements, but it doesn't teach you much about business strategy. This matters for case interviews, so I would recommend self-studying by reading books like Victor Cheng's Case Interview Secrets, Competition Demystified by Bruce Greenwald, or Competitive Strategy by Michael Porter. If you know anybody in consulting, highly recommend speaking with them as well to learn more.
Geowise I would say most large consulting firms like BCG have offices in medium-large cities like Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, and Austin. If you can afford to make a move, then it could be well worth it, but this is a pretty personal decision that you should make based on your life situation. Hope this helps!

Thank you for the advice. When I am ready to start applying would reaching out to recruiters on LinkedIn be the best way to apply for jobs?
