Jesse Part 2

  • Like many who were adopted, Jesse focuses on having been abandoned by his birth mother rather than on having been so highly valued by his adoptive parents that they chose him in preference to others to receive their love and continuing care. For reasons that are unclear, Jesse lacks the ability to trust in their unending commitment to him. He portrays his parents as having little regard for him, but it is not certain that the examples of rejection he provides to Paul are factual. Jesse directs his invective toward his adoptive mother and says almost nothing about his father. This may indicate that his relationship with his adoptive father is too important to talk about.
The father-son relationship is explored in the therapeutic setting, with Jesse becoming increasingly provocative with Paul to test whether Paul will sever his connection to him. Paul maintains a fatherly connection even when Jesse threatens to throw Paul's son's bronzed baby shoes through the window. Paul also demonstrates a fatherly connection in the interest he takes in Jesse's desire to go to art school, although he rightly interprets the expensive course of study Jesse has chosen as a test his parents cannot pass, because they lack the financial means to pay the "rich-kid" tuition.
Where is the "therapy" in all of this? It consists in Paul's steadfast fatherly connectivity. Paul continually demonstrates that he remains on Jesse's side, except perhaps when he is misguided by political correctness to pressure Jesse to answer the phone calls of a young man Jesse describes as a "stalker." Paul is correct in believing that Jesse needs a helpful male presence in his everyday life, but he knows nothing about the young man, so his advocacy is premature at best.
There are many theories of therapeutic practice, but after you cut away the pompous B.S., the correct ones all amount to this: To be helpful, a therapist must make it safe for the patient to establish and maintain a secure attachment relationship with him, which will enable the patient to use the therapist as a secure base from which to take steps in his everyday life that he could never take without the therapist's guidance and support. Keeping attuned to a patient's heartfelt desires is tricky, and it is inevitable that therapists make mistakes, but a conscientious therapist will quickly self-correct and patch up any breaches in the relationship that occur. ‪@VicComello‬

"for reasons that are unclear he lack ability to trust" How about the trauma of abandonment and the lack of genetic mirroring and the implicit memory in his cells of having lost his mother. The therapy community really needs to become adoption competent

I think Jessie gets turned on and a kick over making Paul uncomfortable over sexual descriptions and even seeing his expression.
That’s why he smirks and lingers while talking about sex, stares into his eyes and says certain sexual words with emphasis.
    Some sort of transference
