  • Sunil begins by describing terrible floods in India and expressing his desire to help, all of which is understandable except that he really wants to go back to India even though he would have no means to live there or even to help. It seems as though he desperately wants to escape Julia's house largely because of his suspicions and jealousy, but also because he is starting to lose control over himself and has become afraid about what he might do.
If Sunil told Arun about Julia's suspected affair, Arun would most likely tell Julia. This would set off alarm bells in Julia's head because she would tend to see it as Sunil's attempt to undermine her relationship with her husband. She would see evidence of this in the unusually strong rebuke she received from Arun when suggesting that Sunil was unstable. It must be remembered that narcissists are extremely insecure and tend to see threats even where there are none. This perceived threat to her marriage would provide her with one more reason for getting Sunil out of the house, so it is not surprising that she would tell Arun to let him go back to India if that is what he wants to do. Julia found Sunil to be uncontrollable when he first arrived in their home and hoped that psychotherapy would make him more docile. However, if anything, it made him more agitated. Apparently she has become very fearful, because she has begun locking her bedroom door when she sleeps alone.
Julia probably complained about Sunil to Ethan Bar and possibly mentioned his suspicions about their having an affair. As they were walking down the stairs, Julia perhaps said something like, don't get too close because he's probably still watching us like a hawk. They both turned around and sure enough he was standing at the head of the stairs scrutinizing their every move, which caused them to laugh. When they returned, Julia gave Ethan and innocent peck on the cheek and then stroked his cheek with the back of her hand, again displaying her use of physical intimacies to cement relationships. As Sunil recounts the episode, he displays his jealousy by seemingly imagining that she is stroking his cheek.
Sunil gives evidence of his lack of self-control in the language he uses to describe the retributions that should be visited upon Julia. This theme is carried forward in a disturbing dream he had in which he is about to club a threatening woman who may be a disguised version of Julia but who Paul believes may be Malini, too. Sunil vehemently denies ever wanting to harm Malini, which doesn't necessarily mean that he never did. It is possible that he suppressed his memory of killing her, a process that would have begun in earnest when he was interviewed by the police about her death, thus bringing home the point that by giving into unbridled rage he had put his whole future in jeopardy. ‪@VicComello‬

It seems, he is subconsciously relating Malini with Julia..they bother are physically attractive and quite self reliant. At the same time he is fighting his morality and his own erotic feelings and thus behaving in a jealous way.

As a former police officer who left to do graduate work in psychology, I feel there is a time when a course of treatment departs the bounds of a therapeutic relationship and the therapist needs to act.
Here we see a client who gives signs of having a history of violence, and who is demonstrating an ever increasing risk to an identified another.
Tarasoff v. Regents places a duty to warn on the therapist. If I were Paul, I'd start assessing how much of a threat this guy is...

I hope you watched this season all the way through to the end. Then you will know that Sunil was in total control and WANTED to be deported.

@@briancontreras9317 I did see it, but that doesn't mean you get to re-lable a client's threatening behavior because you saw it end fine on a TV show.

I don't get HBO, so I miss out on these things.
These days I work in the field of mental health, though not as a clinician. Thats probably all for the best. As an intern I was never able to completely give up the law enforcement mindset and I tended to make forensic patients uncomfortable (so, who did that make you feel, dirtbag?)
I work in APS, and I'm frequently at odds with clinicians who can't get past client-patient confidentiality no matter what the circumstances...
