It may be that he started being mean when his step-dad began pulling away from him, causing Jesse to fear that Melissa was telling on him and would follow suit. She is his mom, not his step mom. Jesse is adopted and her name is Marissa. My take on this, is that when Jesse's father pulled away due to him being gay, it really hurt him and the way he is masking his hurt and feeling of abandonment is by deflecting. He's terrified that his mother is going to do the same, so instead of letting her hurt him because he 'knows she will' whether that's true or not, he's taking his power back and in a way 'leaving her' before she can leave him. He's pushing her away so she can't do it to him and him not be in control of that happening. If he pushed her away, he's in control and doesn't have to feel it as much.

@@VicComello Agree. I think it's also shown, with the way he makes up a persona to hide who he really is to guys that are interested in him. Sex is one thing, intimacy scares him, and I think it goes back to what you just said and how he was hurt not only by his adoptive father but by his abandonment feelings from his birth parents, as well. He even goes to the extreme of having an issue when one guy starts trying to call him and ask him how he is and that he's worried. These should be things seen as caring and concerned, as if maybe this guy actually really does like him, but Jesse deflects this to being a 'bad' stalker thing. Whenever anyone shows concern for him, it's 'fake' with an ulterior motive.
