I had one of these back in the 2000s when I was totally skint and with 2 young kids to feed and get around. I bought it solely on its price BUT when i was in a tough spot that car never let me down and was reliable. Seeing this car now makes me think of those miserable times but without the car i would have been in big trouble. its a good car which changed my view of Citroen.
I've owned 2 of these. Engine 1.6 liter 8v with ABS and A/C. Really a very solid and reliable car, very cheap maintenance. I've sold the first one at 340.000 Km still running smooth, the other one currently has 145.000 km and it's almost perfect (first one was Nov/1999, the second one Jan/1999). I would definetely recommend this car!
Xsaras had a massive boot wich mase rhis car very useful and multi purpose. One of them, a 2 liter version, was the first European hybrid car ! Too bad it was never released.

Here in Spain these cars are everywhere and are cheap, beaten up and considered rather ugly and non-desirable from an enthusiast perspective, but it's always cool to see people from other places apreciate them

It is 20 years old, I started working almost 4 months ago, I have already put 7,000km on it (it has 240,000km), and every day, it starts at the first try, even in temperatures of 47 degrees under the sun, the air conditioning has not been repaired for more than 14 years old and in less than 30 seconds it was already blowing a lot of cold air, unlike my father's 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander that always sleeps in the garage, it has failed 4 times in less than 1 year.
This car cant be saved...:) The main structure is rusted into powder. You can buy decent ones for 1000 euros, and it would take much much more (if even possible) to make this particular one MOT ready. In mainland Europe many of these is still running daily - most of them post facelift though. Im not a big fan of Citroen but the Xsara was a pretty reliable and good looking car IMO. However (maybe fortunately) it doesnt feels and drives like a french car, it feels more german than any other Citroens..xDD
It's funny to see people calling the Xsara an exotic car in the comments, in France most of the people think this car is trash but i personnaly think it's not the best car but it's a great one. Great job fixing it 👍
Great Citroen. I wish I had one of these. I like its color and the condition it has been kept in. Remember, next time open the radiator cap slowly and not so immediately. Good thing you didn't get burned.
I am not a fan of the French, honestly. But I must admit, the Xsara, the Saxo, the Peugeot 106,205 and 306 are marvels of their time. Had it had its rust issues solved back then, it would still be a very decent looking, relevant little car today. But now.. it is only a shadow of its former self - not bent on dying, apparently.
My mom had a 2.0 HDI, it was such a comfortable car, I kinda miss it, the major complain was the noisy engine, I currently have an mk1 Citroen C3, with a 1.4 HDI and I love it too, it's quite a quirky car :)
That's cool. To be honest I had to choose my frist car between Xsara (facelift) and C3 mk1 (facelift). I ended up with the C3, 1.4i 73 hp cuz I prefered an Euro 4, but I gotta say, Xsara is so confortable🙃
You will have to make the sills and probably the floors in this Citroen and this car is ready for further driving. These engines (XU, TU) are the best engines in the history of Citroen and Peugeot.

Cutting those rockers off and welding on some new ones would honestly make that car look about new. That motor barely has any kilometers on it. It wouldn't take much to get that car perfect.

This is what you get from winter in Estonia. Checked the licence plate and it was bought new in Estonia in 1998 and in 2011 is flag from MOT as "too much rust".
I have the same car in 1.4i 3 door version it has only 25k kilometers it's my first car and it is great for a beginner driver. it's cheap and very comfortable . Nice vidéo 🥖🇨🇵

Which sucks because I'd buy a C3 diesel manual in "Rouge Elixir" in a heartbeat. I don't need a Fiat. I had a 500 a few years back and it went 100k kms before it blew first and third gear.
I had 2003 xsara break with 2.0 HDI almost 10 years ago and it was good reliable car, affordable but unfortunately some electrical failures were everyday life. I am suprised with this rust. My car in 2014 had no rust at all.

I had one of these not a bad looking car it had the 1.4 TU engine the one I got spent more time at the dealers getting repaired than on my driveway, electrical gremlins I ended up trading it for a saxo vts let's just say deja vu like the xsara so got rid of that and got 2nd hand discovery. You’ve got the only bad « TU» engine, the 1.4. This engine had many problems with its head gasket, but believe me, all the other TU versions were incredibly reliable. I had a 1.1 Citroen Saxo some years ago, never had a problem, and drop it to my neighbour with more as 450000km. He’s still using it.

I'm heavily biased because xsara was my first car, but I think it makes a great daily. The variety of engines offered was huge. I personally have 1.8 16v, 1.9td and 2.0 16v. The 1.9 td is for sale btw :)

I had the Special Edition of this car, exact same color too. Unfortunately I had financial troubles and the car was starting to cost me way too much, so I had to sell it. Great car to drive, do miss it sometimes. I now drive a 1994 Piaggio Vespacar P2 three wheeler by the way haha, talk about a difference. Love it tho.

These TU engine's are bulletproof. This one sounds just fine. Its more the auxiliary's like power steering pump and alternator that sound crap.

Man, I miss 90-00's Citroën. Their cars were slightly weird but solidly made and reliable. Now they're just like any other cheap car.
Back then and earlier Citroëns were cool. Nowadays, they're basically Peugeots with extra steps

Aside from snapping their back axles, the Xsaras were decent cars in their day. Still very capable daily drivers today, not terribly complicated.

I have xsara 2.0 hdi coupe 3 doors 22years old with nearly 300000km still run with the original clutch the best car I ever had

you forget about DW10TD, The toughest diesel engine ever created by PSA. The 2.0 HDi evolved from the XUD11.

My friend had one of those generation Xsara in literally 10 times worst shape as his first car. Drove it until it caught fire one day, good memories.

Once a common site in UK but the scappage scheme here in 2010 eliminated many 90s cars that were reliable and still solid.

Yeah the xsara was a cool car of its era. We still have ours but ours is the facelifted exclusive with the 16 valve 1.6

early 2.0hdi was the best engine had xsara estate 2.0hdi 90bhp year 2000 250,000 miles ..... but rotted in the end ....great car
2.0 Hdi 400000 kilometers started to rust and slowly dies, but glad i had it as first car
