- It’s no secret Switzerland is one of the most expensive countries in the world! This week I’ve spent over $7,000 between a hotel, airfare, and rental car just to get here and watch the second biggest sporting event for Switzerland when it comes to revenue generated the Spengler Cup an annual hockey tournament. People travel here all the time for skiing trips but is a hockey road trip worth it?

Swiss guy here. So glad you like our beautiful country. Actually Joe Thornton played for HC Davos during lock-outs and met his swiss wife there. That’s why you can still meet him here easily ahaha
I mean that to but he is at the tournament in his general manager role for Canada
@@RobertGreeley Joe Thornton ist mittlerweile Schweizer Bürger!
@RobertGreeley he has now a swiss passport and Davos is his second home.
Davos can be more expensive as swiss in general. So 55 CAD (35 SFR) for a SchniPo (Schnitzel with Pommes / fries) is a highprice. Go to Coop Restaurants ore Migros Restaurant, they are perfekt working class restaurants, normal prices with a good qualitiy and quantity of food and portions. And they charge less than (55 CAD) 35.00 CHF, maybe 20.00 CHF. Greeezy from a simple swiss guy - and the simple guys are the overwhelming majority in our country ;))
Thanks for the tip!
But Migros and Coop Restaurant is mostly crap food restaurants from the two largest grocery chains. In a Restaurant, it's normal to pay 55 CHF for a good SchniPo, everywhere in Switzerland. Without drinks. Most affordable meal would maybe still an Kebab which will cost you around 12 CHF / 19 C$
I eat in good restaurants and never ever would anyone I know pay 55 chf for schnipo thats crazy nonsense
@@rast
Not true - Coop/Migros restaurants are not Michelin starred restaurants but the ingredients are excellent/fresh and the dishes are usually tasty and nutritious.
@@rastbro get out of Züri. Here in St Gallen we pay 35chf for a good SchniPo or a Cordon Bleu.
As a Canadian living in Switzerland since 1987 (!), I really enjoyed your report. I remember attending the Spengler Cup in 1988 when the Swiss Franc and Canadian dollar were near par, just a couple of cents difference either way. Great memories of the two games I saw, both standing room occasions. The fantastic atmosphere was also a huge factor in my enjoyment. In return, as a fan-to-fan gesture, I'm attaching the link to my tribute to Bob Cole, which I co-wrote shortly after he passed away. If you like it enough to share it with folks back home, especially in Newfoundland, that would a Canadian expat happy. I have a hockey-crazy nephew-in-law in Alberta, who is originally from Norris Point. I visited Newfoundland in June 2002 with my then 20-year-old son during roadtrip that took us from Montreal to St. John's and back. Wonderful memories. I hope your time in Switzerland has been fun, despite the unfavourable exchange rate. ua-cam.com/video/t5NVLai-ODI/v-deo.html

No wonder Switzerland is so expensive. It's a beautiful place.
It’s also Davos, more of a tourist destination than a normal city, even though it is really expensive, there are much cheaper options for normal Swiss people in the main cities, not everyone pays 50 bucks every day for a meal

@@luc8043 So true, you can get that same meal for 30CHF in a restaurant. Also, spending 7k on lodging and a rental car is a choice and not the actual price, you can visit for far less!
@@luc8043it was 35 CHF but in CAD it is +50.
The train ticket from Zürich to Davos would cost from 41 CHF one way and would get you there in 2 hours. The best way to travel in Switzzerland
Isn't there a change that you need to do though?
Yeah, you need to change in Landquart. If the trains are on time (what they often are) the connection works perfectly and is not really a problem.
But I‘d also consider it the best way to travel through Switzerland.
Well, Zurich - Davos costs 73.30 CHF one way and lasts 2 hours and 20 minutes. In 73.30 CHF, I included the public transport in Zurich City and Davos City, which makes sense for a tourists. If you need only the train between Zurich and Davos, it costs 59 CHF.
I guess that 41 CHF is with the half price subscription. This subscription costs 190 CHF for 1 year (170 CHF if you renew). The tourists doesn't have this subscription and it doesn't worth it.
73.30 CHF is on the 2nd class. If you want to travel with more comfort (you have a lot of stranges guys in the 2nd class), it costs 115.30 CHF one way on the first class....
If you buy a specific ticket in advance, you can get up to 75% off
@@bliblablu you can, they are not always available and i bet there were non around the spengler cup
A Swiss here I have been to the Spengler Cup multiple times, so I am so glad you were able to go, and it's amazing for the Tigers to go for the finals tomorrow. I am a fan of Biel-Bienne, another Swiss team. I hope they beat Fribourg. Have fun there. Enjoy
Tough final result but a special team, thanks for watching!
Spengler Cup is for sure on my bucket list. Swiss mountains and hockey is a nice change from flat Winnipeg. Great video.
Got a video coming soon with the Winnipeg Jets! Stay tuned!
Switzerland is expensive to be sure. And Davos is among the most expensive resorts in Switzerland. BUT... Have you tried Vail or Aspen? A week skiing there will cost you double than the same week in Davos! And no way there to mix a day skiing with a game of the most ancient hockey tournament in the world!
Wish I had some more time to go skiing to be honest!
@@RobertGreeley Don't you decide yourself how much time you want to spend where? I doubt you have a boss to report to?!
Hi there, your lunch at 0:30 would be considered expensive for swiss people too this is crazy. Normally that would cost somwhere between 20 - 25 swiss francs depending on where you are
55 is definitely on the higher side, but at high season in the mountains it’s also not surprising
For sure timing plays into it all as well!
Swiss guy here, Tourist parts are generally very expensive but usually if you go a bit outside of the main tourist areas prices might drop to 50% and the quality is still very high, especially when it comes to food.
Thanks for the tip!
The quality of your videos remains incredible - totally experiencing Spengler Cup vicariously through you. Such a top notch hockey series, i just wish Oxford Uni would field a team to get the UK back in the mix like the founding days

Yes, it's expensive here in Switzerland. But there are differences. Davos is not necessarily the typical benchmark for Swiss prices. Especially not during the Spengler Cup.
Fair point!
I would love to have a Team Canada Spengler Cup Jersey. They always look so cool, even if they are covered in local sponsor logos.

Hey Robert. Nice video and you've shown some interesting facts. Would love to see you doing some reports about teams and games in the regular National League or even Swiss League (2nd tier) in Switzerland. Especially around the Christmas and Spengler cup break there are some rounds of league hockey with great attendances. In my opinion, the league games (especially the rivalry games) come with a much better atmosphere than Spengler cup, less commercialized surroundings and lower prices than Spengler cup. There are many teams of small villages / towns in the league that attract large crowds compared to the size of the town and provide superb hockey experiences. Must watches: The Ticino derbies between Ambri and Lugano (imo nr 1 in hockey atmosphere in Europe), or the 'Gottardo derbies' between Ambri and Zug. Derbies of the teams from the canton of Bern/Fribourg (Bern, Langnau, Biel-Bienne, Fribourg) or the Zurich area derbies (Lions, Kloten, Rapperswil) usually come with a great atmosphere. Also Lausanne, Geneva, Ajoie or 2nd tier teams are fun to watch.
Also: Bit unfortunate that the Canadian Dollar is low at the moment. Makes it a bit hard for your likes here of course. But I can promise you that a Cappucino usually is less 11 Canadian $. 😀
Would love to go back to Switzerland, will see what happens!
Robert as a Canadian I am truly jealous of you, I was just telling my wife that is one tournament I really want to do cause of the history of it and where it is located. Congrats and thanks for giving me an insight on the other side than just watching it on tv!! 💚💚💚🇨🇦

It's one thing to see that rink on TV, it's another to see it the flesh. Wow.
One thing that intrigues me about the tournament is how they choose the teams. I remember the Rochester Americans playing in it one year.
@@gordieparenteau6555 yeah I’m not sure how the selection process works tbh!
@@RobertGreeley in the last years it was always Team Canada and HC Davos, and then usually another Swiss team and a Czech/Finnish/Swedish or Russian team. But sometimes there are also other teams - like a North American franchise or Team Switzerland or even Team Japan.
The roster of 6 teams has changed with time obviously. But in the last decade or so, it has mostly been:
- HC Davos obviously
- A second Swiss team (not mandatory, but most years, especially lately)
- Team Canada (a team of the best Canadian players of the Swiss league)... always invited!
- A German team... because there are so many German tourists in Davos... not because they are so good (although the Straubing Tigers made it this year to the final... but lost to HC Fribourg... oops.... am I spoiling?)
- 1-2 team(s) from Eastern Europe. (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Russia... before 2022)
- 1-2 teams for Scandinavia (Sweden or Finland or both)
- 1 (very) occasional wild card (US (AHL), Latvian, French, Italian team...)
As far as I know, the choice of the roster is totally up to the discretion of the Cup's organizing committee. I may be mistaken, but I do not think there are any set rule on that choice... just traditions.

As someone from Switzerland, if you decide to visit us. Do not use a rental car, it's probably expensive on its own and gasprices are extremely high. And well if you visit the country with the densest rail network on the planet (about 9xUSA, 17xCanada) you should use it. another Point is that even though we have that a lot of people prefer their cars and especially in the cities it can be very confusing if you're from the US or Canada. If you still decide to get a car PLEASE remember the Tram has the right of way ALWAYS as long as not indicated otherwise by a traffic light. (this also goes for crosswalks, it will NOT stop.) and well there's sometimes traffic lights with 3-4 lanes going right for example and no they do not go the same way, just different angles of right, some closer to straight and some nearly beeing a Uturn
Oh man, I am happy that youtube proposed me your video. I am hockey fan from Europe and as a hobby I do similar hockey trips as you do. Great content!
PS. I saw you've been to Czechia, but if you want to go there again, I recomend Trinec. The arena and entertainment there are very close to NHL experience, I am very curious what would be your take on game in this building.

Went to the tournament a few years ago... Bucket list event.... Actually did it cheap, public transit, cheap airbnb, never eaching out and just gettint cheap food from the grocery store
Awesome!
Couple things:
1. Taking the train in all of switzerland is definitly cheaper than renting a car. Granted, car is more convenient sometimes but swiss trains as well as busses are very well interconected.
2. The Spengler Cup is one of the unique Tournaments in Switzerland because its not League Regulated. Normally there are no fights on the ice in swiss hockey (sadly) and for a very long time HC Davos was the only swiss team that would play.
3. Yes food can be expensive, most people stay with beer during the tournament and go eat something cheaper before (like a doner kebab). The picture of the schnitzel you showed seemed to be in a nice restaurant so the prices are something to consider when you go out to eat
4. The sweater you showed is called "The ugliest HCD Sweater" and ofc is currently in my possession =)

I guess the renta car set you back more than the train would have done. Prices are aound 100 CAD both ways from Zurich. Since I am not a tourist here, I am not eligible, but I think there are tourist fares avaiable.. You have to change trains because of a gauge change up to Davos, but other than that, Swiss trains run pretty smoothly. But from my own experience, I know that getting around by train is not really a thing in Canada 🙂
For sure, I take the trains whenever I'm in Europe if I can but with 4 bags of equipment for this trip plus needed to come and go at specific times it just made more sense to go for the rental car!
The Spengler Cup is really important for HC Davos finance. The annual budget of HC Davos is 29 mio CHF (31 mio USD). Davos earns around 11 mio CHF (12.1 mio USD) with the Spengler Cup. It's around 1/3 of their annual budget.
The tournament is really popular. It's a also a nice period for holidays and Davos is located in the Alps, which is nice for Winter holidays. That's the reason everyrhing is so expensive.
Don't forget there is also the WEC (World Economic Forum) in Davos in January. Donald Trump already came to Davos when he was president. I don't know if he is planning to come again in Davos. That's another reason why the price are so expensive in Davos at the moment.
Thanks for the insight! Agree, it's a great spot to spend a holiday!

Obviously yes! I am reasonably sure that they would be most welcome! But given the NHL schedule, try successfully inviting one! Good luck! Be aware that the Spengler Cup is physically very demanding (up to 5 games in 6 days)... add to this 2 transatlantic flights...!
But AHL teams have taken part in the Spengler Cup, and a US selection has even won the Cup back in 1988.
Technically, yes but it would be nearly impossible to schedule unless an official partnership is formed with the Spengler and the NHL to pause league play to send a team over

But hockey has taken leaps here in the last 20 years.
All thats missing is title
CHF 35.- for these schnitzel?! Was it on a montain top at least? Did it include a soup or something?
@@collbackk legit that photo was what I was served 😂
Me thinking: 35 CHF for a schnitzel seems about right. Reminding me that I live in a tourist area myself... Life is expensive in these towns.
@@m.a.6478 idk I’ve gotten the same schnitzel meal for like 15 euros elsewhere in Europe
@@RobertGreeley Me too, but back then the € was worth 1.50 CHF.... But still, I know the prices in restaurants in Switzerland are very high. If you calculate in how long you have to work as a waiter with a Swiss salary to afford a schnitzel, it's not looking so bad though.
Actually 35bucks for a schnitzel in Davos is not so expensive. I life in Switzerland and I know way more expensive schnitzel.
How do you keep your phone working in Switzerland? When I was in Sweden last November, I tried to get a SIM but was told I needed to have a Swedish bank acct to activate it. I went directly to the shop and they told me I had to come back on Monday because it requires special activation for non-Swedes. It was asinine. I ended up just suffering through hoping each place I needed to use the phone had reliable WiFi.
@@hattorihanzo2275 I just have a phone plane that charges me $15/day for the roaming. I could do like an eSIM for cheaper but I always need more than say 7gb for a whole trip doing social media work so by the time I buy all the additional data it works out to be the same price.
For Sweden: Just get a Comviq Sim-Kart (Kontantkort) at an ICA or Coop, then you can charge it through the Internet without any ID or Bank Acc
HCD HCD HCD HCD!!!!
Hope you enjoyed!
As a swiss I will have to tell you, you spent way to much. Next time contact me, I will get you there "very" cheap (well for swiss averages).
Also, in switzerland if they stick a price on a product (like with the coffee mug) you are in the right to buy it for said price. Having to pay 30.- for 2 mugs is a rip off (instead of 10.- for 2 mugs) and the shop clerk kinda pulled a sneaky on you! Next time stay firm and only paid what was initially asked for (as per sticker/price tag).
Well, I guess that mug was much more a holder for the pens inside. And one of the pens cost 5.--, not the mug. Seems that was a misunderstanding, based on my observation.
Yeah exactly, I'm not too worried over it, plus I mean rental car rates are what they are again could have taken the train but I'd rather just be able to go on my own schedule and have a place for all my gear!
7000 spent in Switzelrand including flight tickets that you bought in North America?
Cost of flights are dependent on both the country you're flying from and flying to
Well, if you paid 55$ for that meal - your own fault. There are cheaper choices, and the food is just as good. Also, 11$ for the coffee? Did you buy the coffee machine, too? PS: I'm Swiss.
I mean did I blame anyway about the cost of my lunch or did I just state the fact lolol
I'm so tired of always hearing that it's expensive in Switzerland. Everyone gets paid more here, quite simply. Greetings from a Swiss citizen.
Fair point!
I think it’s not expensive for Canadians
CAD to Swiss is a brutal conversion for us right now
Das Stimmt so nicht ganz. Am Spenglercup mit dem ganzen drumherum ist es teurer als an einem normalen Ligaspieltag. Jedoch Ja bei uns ist es teuer.
Danke!
@RobertGreeley i'm proud that you also watch this tournament in Canada, or like you once or twice even on site. You deserve a "Danke" for even promoting it.
Lets go Davos🔵🟡
Great club!
To things. You dant have to spend so much money like he did, 2. The Ticket Prices are not expensive for swiss people
Obviously you don't have to spend as much money as I did
