@@wayandoas someone who’s working with constitutional rights in Switzerland, the corona period was handled extremely poorly. In fact, you should expect quite a drastic change from Switzerland soon. Since Switzerland was unprepared and has no constitutional emergency bill many anti-constitutional things were passed during COVID. This enraged the public and worst thing is: from left to right in the past few years they’re trying to pass bills that go directly against the constitution. No one seems to care though because they saw it works to go against it during Covid. (In the parliament) They don’t even bring this up to the general public anymore
It was done so poorly we then voted 3 times on the measures and approved them all. Don't confuse a loud minority you seem to be part of with the swiss citizens as a whole. Also by "working with constitutional rights" I guess you mean that right wing movement that recently dismantled itself and not anything really professional or you couldn't have missed the votation part.
@@wayando i too feel like it was handled very poorly for an otherwise relatively advanced country. there was a lot of hate going around between the general public. i personally as a swiss expected more from the parlament and from the public. tbh i was disappointed.
one thing that hasn't been mentioned is that switzerland has been at the forefront of graphic design trends for decades now. to give a few examples: - while nearly every country on earth has their passports follow the general principle of "large crest centered on the front with the full, official name of the country in golden, old timey all caps lettering above or below", switzerland's passport simply says "swiss passport" in english and the 4 official languages of the country in the top right in white, above a small cross. it's almost funny how sleek and stylish it looks when you compare it to any other passport. - switzerland is famous for its font designers. many of the most popular typefaces among graphic designers are of swiss origin, hell, arguably the most classic and universally loved font in the world is literally called "helvetica". - the swiss railway clock is probably the single most iconic clock design of the 20th century. swiss design has always excelled at keeping it simple and clear but not becoming boring and the SBB clock is a prime example of that. - in general, the difference in visual quality of almost every sign, logo and other graphic design work in as opposed to outside of switzerland is clearly apparent as soon as you cross the border. it's not something the average person will pay attention to, but they will definitely register it subconsciously and it's part of why tourists often view switzerland as much cleaner than their home country.
To add to the point about the SBB railway clock: As a testament to its style and sleekness, Apple stole the design for the clock app on iOS in 2012. They were caught, and had to pay 20 M Franks to license the design.
That was Henri Dufour only though. He also ordered his soldiers to spare the wounded, prisoners and the defenseless and forbid the use of cannons against soldiers because the "enemies" were still fellow countrymen
Unparalleled graphics paired with great music, and of course the choice of topic is so fantastic. I hope you can keep it up and expand on this style! I thoroughly enjoyed the montage at the end; great closer allowing for a feel-good sum-up of the video.
We do have a strong founding myth it just so doesn't happen to be a war. It's the signature of the founding pact and the fact different people chose to unite rather than were forced to and to this day still chose to stay together despite our differences is a very strong part of the swiss identity
@@Wisteria__Lanesadly there still is a lot of littering, i think the laws should be more strict and the people throwing garbage outside should pay way more and also should be controlled more

@@Blex_040 Oh but it is! There are many security features baked into the bills and the technical expertise needed to manufacture these makes them worthy of that title. They were not just designed, they absolutely were engineered

This video is absolutely amazing... as a Swiss person it always makes me really happy when someone actually does research behind Switzerland's history. Another fact about Swiss bank-notes, they also contain a lot of data, the 20CHF bank-note for example has the names of different astrological bodies and their distance from earth in light-years, -days, -hours, -minutes or even seconds. PS: The visuals of your video are amazing.
yeah, the theme of the 20 CHF note has a lot to do with light, so the distances are in how fast the light travels to/from the earth! I love that part. And the back depicts a cinema screen (also to do with light!) during a film festival, looks a lot like Locarno to me.
What makes it especially hard to counterfeit is that they used every printing technique for certain aspects of the banknote: - offset printing -digital printing -letterpress -screen printing and so on… Apart from that, with UV-Light you can see patterns and actually in the paper there are fibres that are UV-reactive, so they use special fibres in the process oft making the paper. Also the new note seems to have about 200 different security checks and about 20-50 are revealed pubicly. Source: I made an apprenticeship in Switzerland as a printing technologist, so for some things I probably can‘t prove with an actual source.
Lived in Northern Ireland for 2 years, we had vertical banknotes too since other banks are allowed to print banknotes in Northern Ireland (and Scotland too).
The hands thing is really cool, and while most are obvious representations (an orchestra conductor holding a baton for organisation, grasping hands for collaboration etc) the scientific expertise one is very cool in my opinion. It's a a depiction of the "right hand rule" which is a shorthand way of remembering which axis are labelled X, Y and Z in 3D space, which is important to know since there are two ways to "order" those labels and using a mixture of both makes a mess of things
The 200 swiss franc note is actually my favourite! Its theme is matter and the backside depicts a matter collison, like in the large hadron collider in Cern. My favourite part is the list of time epochs after the big bang, e.g. the quark epoch up to 10 micro seconds after the big bang, or that at 9.2 billion years the solar system an the earth formed. I'm in love!
it is my favourite one aswell. but there is more to it since it is also a reference to the "Rütlischwur"/Rütlioath, Rütli being the location, where the 3 first regions(kantons) made their oath. if you google images from "Rütlischwur" you will see exactly what i mean :D
I'm only halfway through the video but man, I just have to say this - I cannot get over how _gorgeous_ the visuals and editing are in your videos. Combine that with the consistently interesting subject matter, tight structure and smooth narration and these videos soar into a league of their own. Please keep it up, they're so good in so many ways. That said, I'm probably going to burn through this channel's back catalogue very quickly so if anyone here has any recommendations for similar channels, please reply! 🙏🏻
Agreed and an obvious recommendation is Lemmino, which has many years of content similar in presentation, quality, color, sound design and an amazing voice to boot.
touche huge cultural and infrastructural things like these take an immense amount of time and effort to change to. Of course, not an impossible amount, but certainly more than i could see a country like US bothering to. Not that they don't have more pressing matters anyways.
I love Switzerland, but we also have to be careful with idealizing countries... this video sure stretches things a bit for the sake of that... In any case, there's definitely lots to learn from the Swiss. They are respectful, efficient and insanely capable. But Swiss society also tends to be very conservative, despite what this video may lead you to believe (did you know it took until the 70s for women to have the right to vote in all cantons?). There's also still problems of racism and discrimination, both in politics and in society. But you know what? At least the politicians seem to consistently do their job. And the trains... my god the trains!
I am very glad to be Swiss but Switzerland is not perfect by any means. There’s still a lot of intolerance or ignorance in our society and change is slow here (one of the downsides of our democratic system). But if our country’s image can be a role model to others then maybe it is not too grave that we don’t perfectly embody that image either.
@@moonie_nouki You're missing the big picture. These problems you're talking about are the butt of the joke in the high spheres. No one actually cares about it.
Huge congratulations on this video! I have never seen such beautiful animations (especially of the Swiss map) and I was just imagining, how students on the primary and secondary school level could be much more engaged during class with such content. It's great to see how youtube productions are increasingly becoming of much higher quality than what you find the local tv channels producing. Big kudos!
Props on the incredible production value! This video feels like one that should have an order of magnitude more views. I've been subscribed for a bit over a year now and look forward to seeing you grow and create more content.
Maybe the designer of the current series with the hands should also have been mentioned: It's Manuela Pfrunder. Interestingly the previous designer, Jörg Zintzmeyer, had a famouse internationally renowned design agency. But for the new series, the Swiss National Bank chose to work with a much younger, talented but unknown Manuela Pfrunder. Maybe that was a risk, but I think the result is really cool!
i think it’s also necessary to note the importance of graphic design and art and culture in switzerland. the swiss gov invests a lot of money in art and culture such as the annual competitions like the Swiss Art/Design Awards that are at the same time as ArtBasel and organizations such as ProHelvetia. in the history of graphic design the swiss style is very prominent (like at the NYC subway system with their use of Helvetica). the graphic design of the SBB CFF FFS (train national train company) and the new Swiss passports designed by the studio RETINAA are also insane
2:25 Actually, the official reason was more pragmatic. With a same width, you simplify and decrease the cost of all automated parts which handle bills in ATM, automated selling machine, etc. Hugh economical win with a little requirement.
This is an exceptionally powerful contribution. It goes way beyond "manufacturing currency bills" It zooms in and drills right down to the fundamentals of what Democracy is all about. All of the elements, the content above all, but also the visual and the audio clips are above anything we are used to on UA-cam. All I can say humbly - thank you!
The everybody move your body sequence of animations is so good I kind of think Switzerland would do good to time travel here, take your video back to 2015-2016, and use it to introduce the, at that time, new designs.
What a cool video! The information was interesting, some that I as a Swiss did not know about. But also the design, animation, lighting and effects were freaking awesome!!! Haven't seen many videos of this caliber or style out there! Also didn't think this video would instill some national pride in me, but it did, thanks!
0:22 it isn’t alone in these many regards; I have a 2$ bill from Bermuda 🇧🇲 from January 1st 2009(yes, the day the bill itself was printed on is specified) and it’s oriented vertically, has a beautiful male eastern bluebird on one side and a dope statue of Neptune in front of a clock head bell tower, and had anti-counterfeit features a good few years ahead of its time.
Also worth to mention: you rarely find damged used bills. ATMs always gives you fresh printed bills. If you return used bills to the bank, they destroy them and print new ones.
I decided to buy a 'danse macabre' note after watching this amazingly done video! While this note has ceased to be legal tender in 2000, it's value is still nearly 1000 francs. :) So basically even some our invalid money is worth more than most countries actual money ^^
As a swiss, thank you very much, i liked this video a lot. As a designer i would have love to learn more details about the design requirements and the designer. Also because « swiss design » in this context would be very interesting to hear about 😊
Can confirm, spotting the security features was a game we did as kids. Now with the new note I haven't tried or looked them up yet but will definitely someday. Cool video, thanks! The only thing is, that we arent that patriotic as americans or other nationals. So most swiss people never really think about the "helvetic nation-mythos" (or how it is depicted or even what is depicted on our notes). At least not cosciously.
I always loved our bills. They are ubiquitous but the're also one of the most intricate and thought out things one can own. There's so much to see on them, so many interesting concepts hidden on those plastified pieces of paper, like microperforations depicting various concepts that can only be seen by putting the bill over a light. Other things can be found in transparency as, sandwiched between the two outer layers is a third transparent layer part patterns on it. It also makes up the cross in the top left and, I believe, allows for some patterns to be embossed on the paper. Those bills are too much fun to decipher. I'm astounded (but also thank god) there aren't more conterfeits solely due to how fun those bills are to study
@ash-yo4vg 95% of audiences in ANY Video mentioning CH are Bünzlis itself simply because we need to check and make shure that this aint false/fake or damagin information😅😊
There was also an important fact why we avoided having people in our bank note. As a contexte back 8 years ago we had intense discussions about having famous women in it. (Not only in switzerland but also in other countries like the USA if I recall correctly). By avoiding people we also avoided this conversation and found in the end something even better that explains the essence of our nation.
Very good video. Very well done. One thing to add: there is one important character/figure, which can also be found on our currency on the 1/2, 1 and 2 Franc coin, the Helvetia. Which also gives Switzerland it´s official Name: Confoederatio Helvetica.
Well, Helvetia is called Helvetia because of Confederatio Helvetica, not the other way. Furthermore, helvetica simply means "of the helvetii", the Celtic people that lived in Switzerland. Also, Helvetia is the allegory/national personification of Switzerland, which I think is important to clarify
@@first-namelast-name No it is not. The "Helvetische Republik" was first introduced in 1798. But the Name Helvetia popped up even before that. And Switzerland was called up until then the "Eidgenossenschaft". The name Helvetia existed already before the official Founding of the Confederation Helvetica in 1848.
Seeing the original bill designs felt like nostalgia :D I remember being about 13 years old when they announced the design change. I think they rolled it out on the 50 Franc bill first, afterwards the other were also changed.
Switzerland is by no means the only country to have issued vertical notes. Spain and Croatia had them in the 90s, the Netherlands in the 80s, Israel and Argentina used to have them, Venezuela had them when they still had a currency. The Bahamas, the Maldives, the Eastern Caribbean states, Mexico, Sri Lanka, Bermuda, Aruba, Kazakhstan all use them today. Many countries like Thailand, Morocco and Russia have used them for commemorative notes. Even still, they are undoubtedly an uncommon design and are only regularly used by a fraction of today's world's currencies, plus Switzerland very well might have been the first to use them (1975).
10:21 "William Tell, Switzerlands most recognizable hero" - keep in mind he is most likely a fictional character... popularized by the German author Friedrich Schiller.
Great video, I'm just a bit bummed you didn't mention the reserve series... a whole series of banknotes designed and manufactured, and then kept secret and hidden in a vault. Only to be used in case Switzerland was overflown with fake bills.
A very interesting and surprisingly little-known fact. They claim that they’ve given up on this concept because the most recent series is supposed to be too hard to forge. But then again, who really knows. If they had had a new reserve series produced, they would certainly not have told the public about it.
This video is absolutely stunning. The way you brought the bank notes to life and emphasized their individual meaning was really pleasing to watch. Thanks a lot💪🏽
Absolutely great video! Would love to see a follow-up on the iconography of Swiss postage stamps. William Tell has a 30 year run on Swiss stamps at the beginning of the 20th century, so that image is arguably even more present to the average person than currency. What else do Swiss stamps say about Swiss exceptionalism?
I congratulate the creator of the video. As a Swiss who knows the notes and their interpretations, I viewed this video more from the aesthetic side. I liked it extremely much. Therefore, a subscription to this channel is a must for me.
9:51 I (as swiss) agree. May be a bit out of line but I think Switzerland presents itself very carefully towards the outside, controlling how it's perceived. However, in the 'deep depths' I consider my country exceptionally hypocritical and thats something most people won't ever know about Switzerland.
@@Wisteria__Lane For me its a lot of different things, mostly related to money. First of all the fact that already rich people from other countries get literally paid or tax discount/relieve to "live" in Switzerland, legally. And I know everyone looks at Switzerland like it is THE rich country, but for regular inhabitants that arent too well off you dont really get to experience that - its more so the government and maybe from middle class upwards thats rich. And IF you can be considered rich, Switzerland is a great country to "live" in (pay taxes in; a lot of foreigners dont actually live here thats why I put it in quotes). If you dont have a lot of money to spare, you get hit by so many things that are mandatory to pay for, like healthcare. And although our healthcare is very good, awesome even in comparison to others, rich people and poor people pay almost exactly the same for it, theres no nuances or any fair balance here. The rich get richer is the motto fr, like in so many areas you get rewarded for being rich because Switzerland doesnt want to lose their rich people. They're like a nice decoration on a basic jacket, if they're gone the jacket is just mid and boring. (Dont know if hypocritical is the exact word for this, in german I would call it "scheinheilig" but I failed to find a word that it can 100% translate into. This word would be used if I were to present myself as innocent ("heilig"=holy) but deep inside I was a deviant. "Schein" means something "seems" to be. So literally translated it would be "seemingly holy/innocent" or something along the lines of. I really like this word because it applies to a lot of things ;))

one thing that hasn't been mentioned is that switzerland has been at the forefront of graphic design trends for decades now. to give a few examples:
- while nearly every country on earth has their passports follow the general principle of "large crest centered on the front with the full, official name of the country in golden, old timey all caps lettering above or below", switzerland's passport simply says "swiss passport" in english and the 4 official languages of the country in the top right in white, above a small cross. it's almost funny how sleek and stylish it looks when you compare it to any other passport.
To add to the point about the SBB railway clock:
As a testament to its style and sleekness, Apple stole the design for the clock app on iOS in 2012. They were caught, and had to pay 20 M Franks to license the design.

11:55 during the Sonderbundeskrieg, the most generals advised their soldiers to not kill any enemy as they were still swiss brothers
It should said in every war: we are still human 'brothers'
That was Henri Dufour only though. He also ordered his soldiers to spare the wounded, prisoners and the defenseless and forbid the use of cannons against soldiers because the "enemies" were still fellow countrymen
Yeah, that's the most important point.
Unparalleled graphics paired with great music, and of course the choice of topic is so fantastic. I hope you can keep it up and expand on this style!
I thoroughly enjoyed the montage at the end; great closer allowing for a feel-good sum-up of the video.

The vfx and editing on these videos are amazing, great work!
We do have a strong founding myth it just so doesn't happen to be a war. It's the signature of the founding pact and the fact different people chose to unite rather than were forced to and to this day still chose to stay together despite our differences is a very strong part of the swiss identity

What makes it especially hard to counterfeit is that they used every printing technique for certain aspects of the banknote:
- offset printing
-digital printing
-letterpress
-screen printing
and so on…
Apart from that, with UV-Light you can see patterns and actually in the paper there are fibres that are UV-reactive, so they use special fibres in the process oft making the paper.
Thanks!
I'm only halfway through the video but man, I just have to say this - I cannot get over how _gorgeous_ the visuals and editing are in your videos. Maybe we should be like the Swiss, they seem to have got a lot of things handled ages ago.
Looks like great minds think alike.
touche huge cultural and infrastructural things like these take an immense amount of time and effort to change to.

Love the animations for each note at the end. A beautiful and informative video as ever
Great content. I actually enjoyed the animations and editing more than anything else. Inspiring. Hats off.
0:44 switzerland here: the notes are very young, the ones before them had "pictures" of important old people on it aswell 😅

This was my first video from your channel. The animations, depth of research & overall quality is great. I just subscribed. Keep up the good work.
Also worth to mention: you rarely find damged used bills. ATMs always gives you fresh printed bills. If you return used bills to the bank, they destroy them and print new ones.
i love your video graphics and editing
I decided to buy a 'danse macabre' note after watching this amazingly done video! While this note has ceased to be legal tender in 2000, it's value is still nearly 1000 francs. :) So basically even some our invalid money is worth more than most countries actual money ^^

the animations in this video are crazy! especially the 20 franks bill walking around the world looking cool

@@olke85 yes, and before that, in the first century, there was Helvetia here
Seeing the original bill designs felt like nostalgia :D I remember being about 13 years old when they announced the design change.
I think they rolled it out on the 50 Franc bill first, afterwards the other were also changed.
Canada has a current $10 bill that is vertical

William Tell has a 30 year run on Swiss stamps at the beginning of the 20th century, so that image is arguably even more present to the average person than currency. What else do Swiss stamps say about Swiss exceptionalism?
