They weren't "likeable people" because they had all been brutalized by war. Look at how much Norman changed in a very short space of time.... how much different do you think he would have been if he had had to endure this kind of thing daily for another 3 years? For me, that was the entire point of the movie - war is horrifying because of what it does to the survivors, not just because of the death and destruction.

Good reaction. The reason why they stayed to fight at the end, was because they were the only combat unit between the SS and the logistical troops. Had they retreated, it would have been a blood bath. They were told this by the officer that sent them on the mission.

In WW2, there was a rule that if the enemy was wearing American solder clothes, they could be shot. That is why that was not a war crime.

The Geneva Convention ruled that soldiers wearing the uniform of an enemy could be executed. The reasoning was to actually keep battlefield deaths down.

The rule was set first by the treaty at the Hague in 1907 then reaffirmed by the Geneva Convention. Reasoning was to actually keep battlefield deaths down and prevent incidents of friendly fire.

those are "tracer" bullets that light up and fire about every 5th round .. they would help in aiming accuracy.

    1) Teaching the new rookie to get used to it.
    2) This is within the late war (1944-45) period. Nearly the end of the war.
    3) That German wore a stolen US military uniform. From a personal perspective, that’s dishonorable, disrespectful, etc. especially to the dead. Basically, like stolen valor. Understandable that he did it to survive but still is a no go. He essentially forfeited all his rights as a POW (Prisoner of War).
    Why? How?
It is generally not allowed for soldiers to wear uniforms that belong to enemy combatants. This is because doing so can create confusion on the battlefield and potentially put their teammate soldiers at risk. Friendly fire in particular. Imagine doing this & knowing that your husband, father, and or son was killed by your own people & not the enemy. Tell that to the family, accident or not, the fact the remains that you shot your teammate dead due to that being normalized in a battle. Even if wearing a stolen uniform while not in battle can still get you killed cuz you look exactly like the enemy especially at night, little to no visibility. What if some new guy/rookie shows up, on guard duty, you don’t look like us so he decides to shoot you cuz you’re wearing a different/unrecognizable uniform in your army group.
Additionally, it is considered a war crime under the Geneva Conventions to wear the uniform of an enemy combatant with the intent to deceive. Another possibility of him being a spy.
If he wanted to be a POW, he should’ve surrendered without stealing the uniform. However, there’s no guarantee depending on the kind of enemy unit you’re up against cuz even soldiers & officers can take it personally that they’ll just make a cover story for whatever personal reasons so they’re not caught doing a war crime themselves. Stuff like these happen regardless. War ain’t fair, life ain’t fair. Wars create both monsters & heroes regardless.

The events of the final battle are similar to those of Audie Murph. After him and his unit fell under attack, he moved to cover the retreat of his men, reportedly climbing into a burning American tank destroyer and employing the 50 caliber machine gun. He would stand his ground against hundreds of Germans and 6 tanks. For his actions he received the Medal of Honor, America’s highest award for courage under fire.

In answer to your question, there was lots of VD, tons of war babies (gladly) but US soldiers were also issued condoms and given basic sexual education.

In scenes that were cut we find out why Wardaddy has taken Norman under his wing. He was drunk driving and wreck with his GF and brother in the vehicle and they both died. His brother was named Norman. Wardaddy's burns are from that accident. I think they should have left that in.
The colors are Hollywoodization of tracer rounds.

I can't speak for other militaries, but being mean to the FNG until he's proven himself seems to be the norm in American service- particularly the infantry. In Vietnam, they often wouldn't even bother learning the new guy's name until he'd survived his first firefight.

There aren't many of them left, but I don't think those people who survived the concentration camps and were rescued would agree with you that this war was very fruitless and unnecessary. War is horrible, but there are times that it is necessary and the only alternative left to defeat evil.

This movie puts u in Norman's shoes, and takes u on his arc! Germany had much better equipment than the allies. Better handguns, the had even AK style rifles, but not yet mass produced, better shoulder fired rockets, better tanks better planes. If they hadnt attacked Russia, and if the americans hadn't won the battle of the Bulge, no way we win this war. Because they already had drone planes, drone rockets, were already working on mass producing jet fighters, and would have been nuclear by the end of 45. Sadly, Norman's prediction for Emma came true. best job i ever had means, i love u guys. Norman played the child in the great remake movie,3.10 to Yuma!! sort of based on a true story, the last battle. Type in here, Audie Murphy in WW2! The captain here was also bad colonel in The Patriot, and Ranger Captain in Blackhawk Down. Why did the German guy let Norman live? He proly knew the war was almost over, and just saw a young guy like himself, in Norman.

And even the US Army still had calvary units at the beginning of the war. In fact, the last "official" combat charge of the US Calvary happened in the Philippines against Japanese Infantry. The US won the engagement.

I really just wish that the folks making this film had not been so quick to make so many unrealistic choices in depicting the tank combat and a few other things...it is such a great movie in so many ways but could have been so much better. David Ayer is a really good director, but it seems like he should probably not try to deal with historical subjects...considering his work on his other WW2 movie U-571 is even more inaccurate than this film. I fully appreciate that some things have to be different than actual history sometimes, but this movie did a few too many things that are just completely against the real history for seemingly no real reason. There are such great acting performances in this movie, but it could have been so much better if they had gone the realistic route. IMHO
