The actor David Proehl who plays Richie got the role because in the auditions James Gandolfini aka Tony would tower over him but Richies eyes would just look right through him. Btw the man who blows Pauly off in the restaurant when he says Comandatorie is David Chase the creator of the show.
Carmella having that look on her face at the end when Tony came home was a callback to Angie talking earlier in the episode about hearing Pussy coming home and part of her wished that he was gone. Great episode.
One of my favorite subplots in the series is Pauly being so amped up to be going to Italy. Then being so disappointed. And then being so happy, delighted and content to be back in and overlooking the stark landscape of New Jersey. Lol.
@@portugahbkBecause theyre not Italian. Not really. Not anymore. At best they have a watered down version of some customs the italians of early 20th century had whey they came across the water. Hell most american mafiosi cant even speak fluent italian. They just use a few words and phrases and many of those are american slang. They are americans with a strong flavour of italian culture. Angie's potential divorce and the things Janice said has Carmela thinking and reflecting on her own marriage. It's why she worked so hard to tell Angie that the church hates divorce.. She was really convincing her to stay so she wasn't the only one crazy enough to put up with that lifestyle. Also, you got to meet Furio! Who Tony negotiated into his deal. Great character.
It’s probably been mentioned previously, but it always blows me away how good Steven Van Zandt plays Silvio, Tony’s right hand man. Also known as Little Stevie, he is the longtime guitarist for Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band! Before The Sopranos, I didn’t even know he was or could be an actor! 😁
I love the image of everyone looking absolutely miserable driving back from the airport while Paulie is looking at the dumpy ass New Jersey overpasses with a smile on his face lmao
I never feel bad for carm. Shes completely complicit. She looks the nice cars and million dollar home. She would never choose a small apt in the city in exchange for marrying a straight arrow.
It seems like you missed the fact that the guy that Pussy has been hanging with, at the party store, etc. is an FBI agent. He's working with the FBI on the secret. That's why he hammered that poor Elvis impersonator. The Elvis guy saw them together and Pussy was worried that he'd figure it out and rat on him. Loving your reactions, though!
The Italian mafia in American operates much differently than the mafia in Italy. There are three major players in Italy, the Naples, Calabrian and Scillian mafias. Open violence is something that the American mobs will try to avoid, the different Italian mobs are much more open about their violence and much more vicious. They operate in similar ways to the Central and South American cartels.
i was thinking that tony and paulie didn't react because they were use to fireworks and legal gun usage in america. the Italians were embarrassed by the kid.
@@kluneberg8952The mafia in America is more careful due to the power of the US government. The RICO law really destroyed them in the 60s and 70s. In Italy, corrupt policemen, local and federal politicians are all on their payroll and since they control most of the drug trafficking into Europe, they don't shy away from open violence.
I think Carmela's real issue is that she knows what comes with being married to a mobster and she knows that in exchange for Tony's millions, she would have to deal with the life of crime and the women. Now for some reason it seems like she expects that to change. I think its ridiculous the way she acts, because theyve been married like 16 years by this point. She knows exactly
You probably know now but the guy P*ssy is talking to is law enforcement (they casually reveal that when he first came back. He’s paranoid, hence all the weird behavior.
I am now waiting for your reaction video as much as I was when the show was on and I waited for a new episode once a week, it's awesome to rewatch it with you guys 😂
I love that transition. When white guy screams N word and says who else huh? Cut to Tony looking at Polaroids of that car... who else?! Italians. Really everybody but Roy DeMeo of the Gambino Family was known for 2 things: boosting cars moving them to Baghdad and not just whacking people, making them disappear which his record was 100+, all 5 families gave him contracts of those who needed to disappear, an absolute psychopath.
I love the story when the actors arrived at their Sicily hotel for filming. There was an issue at check-in, Tony Sirico (Paulie) overheard it, turned to the hotel guy on the front desk and said: "Heh, you got a problem with Americans?". Tony Sirico WAS Paulie 😂
@18:35 "I thought I told you to back off Beanzy" "I did. And then I put it in drive" What a line lol "You pick up the BBC on that thing"? Lol . Great writing - even better acting. Best show in history.
The part where the car gets jacked and taken, is based on a real thing the Decavelcante family from NJ done. They would ship the vehicles to the Middle East
It's amazing they did all that filming in Campania for all of 10 minutes of screen time in the Italy scenes. That beach Tony walks on with the lady boss is pretty nasty. They showed the good and bad of Italy
I think that was the point. The guys went to Italy with all these romantic notions of how it will be, how they'll feel right at home in their ancestral land, how everything will be highly cultured... then they get there and the food isn't right (because Italian-American food is NOT Italian food), the toilet is just barely one step up from a hole in the dirt, they expected to meet Don Corlioni but it turns out he's an old man sitting in a wheelchair in a tracksuit, mumbling because his mind is gone, the boss is a woman, Paulie tries to fit in but nobody respects him enough to even talk to him. Then on the car ride home they're all kind of realising that they were never Italian at all, that everything they thought about Italy was wrong, that they don't belong there. Paulie especially. He's so happy to be back looking at dirty old concrete bridge supports because THAT is his home. That's how I saw it anyway.
@@Aethelhald Very well said, agree 100%, and good looking out for Paulie appreciating the ugliness (beauty to him) of New Jersey as home. Highly recommend Naples and Campania though. Had a blast when I went there, and the food was unforgettable
I like how after Tony sees Meadow cleaning up he's got this look like, "Now why didn't Carmela and I think of that". Meadow feeling guilty seeing her mom and Janice getting into a fight over her lack of discipline leads to her disciplining herself. Meanwhile Tony is complaining that he and Carmela are powerless to discipline Meadow when they haven't even thought of the most basic things to do that. Meadow even designs her own non-punishment.
14:27 LOL. That's rich. Any real mobsters that are still around today will tell you that Ritchie is the first kind of guy who walked into a basement and doesn't walk back out. The mob absolutely does not tolerate loose cannons.
The scene in the 4th episode when Paulie says something itialian and then calls them cocksuckers for the look they gave and not saying anything. The guy that looks is David chase, the creator of the show

When these Italian Americans go back to Italy, there's a part of them that thinks of themselves as Italians. When they are amongst Italians there is one experience after another that says You are not Italian. This is what Paulie experiences in most of his scenes. On the way home they find themselves wondering who they are, this is the cognitive dissonance they share in the car ride while the scenes of rusty New Jersey go by.
