Greatest movie ever made, IMO. Saw this in the theater when I was in college, and took every one of my friends to see it. It's a perfect film. The performances, the script, the location, the directing, the cinematography, the music...all perfect.

It’s kinda ridiculous how good this movie is. It’s not even the the kind of movie I usually love. I’m more of a sci-fi fan. But when I saw this, it blew me away. #1 on my personal list.

It's a great movie but it's an unrealistic fairy tale. Other than the sisters the prisoners are pretty much all great guys. Bad Warden and bad guards. Prisons today are racially segregated but no racial tension in the 1940s? Red is a white Irishman in the books but they race swapped him for Morgan Freeman. Just more woke Hollywood BS before it became so prevalent.

    • @jonbradley2920

Morgan Freeman should get a lifetime achievement award for the narration in this movie alone.

I love the way you let the movie wash over you. You didn’t need to show us how you had figured it out. You took each scene as its own moment with genuine emotion. Brilliant reaction.

Brooks' scene was the most devastating moment, what a beautiful movie.

  • @TheDaringPastry1313

My favorite comparison in the whole movie.
21:18 - Brooks has no hope, is terrified and the camera points back at the prison, because that's where his mind is.
44:51 Red is also unsure about things, but he wanted to get out. The camera points out to the world for him because he has some hope because of Andy.
Really recommend The Green Mile which is also based on a Stephen King book.

The Green Mile is a neat sister movie to this one... Although not remotely related story wise, it somehow feels as this one. Same writer, same director. Both are beautiful beautiful films. Ones you'll remember forever.

People who see this for the first time always say they loved it, but it'll be a while before they can bring themselves to watch it again. But it'll shock you how easy it is to see a little bit of it and fall back into watching the whole movie again.
I think most people who watched it for the second and third time didn't plan to start watching it again, it just kind of happened

My favorite film of all time, like a lot of other people are saying. I first saw this when I was a young teen, when it was airing multiple times on TBS and TNT. I immediately fell in love with it then, and it became one my favorite movies. Then, funnily enough, now, it's considered the greatest movie of all time on IMDB.

    • @davidrichards6509
      @davidrichards6509 Місяць тому

It's listed on IMDb as the number one best movie of all time, within a specific set of criteria set by IMDb for the poll, but IMHO it's still only the SECOND best "prison" movie ever but just barely in second place behind "Cool Hand Luke" and that's probably because even as good as Bob Gunton's Warden Norton is here, there is nobody and I mean NOBODY who has ever been as good in anything as Strother Martin was in everything and it's a damn shame that so many people under the age of 40 will have absolutely NO CLUE who that is.

It's a great movie for sure. Watching it with you today, I realized for the first time that small acts of kindness are scattered throughout the misery of prison life. One guard was happy for Andy for getting books from the State, another guard told Andy that the kid passed with a C+ Average. The other convicts collect rocks for him to shape into chess pieces. Great reaction, I hope you watch other classics, such as Field of Dreams, Casablanca, The Godfather, Forest Gump

This is one of my favorite movies of all time and I've been binge watching people's reactions. Every time I see a reaction that mirrors mine, it hits me in my feelings just like the first time. Watching with you is a joy, that you don't talk over the movie, you don't overthink the movie or try to get ahead of the movie. You just experience it and react. Thank you for that!

    • @Zarkarian64
      @Zarkarian64 Місяць тому

🎬",that you don't talk over the movie,". It is truly one of the most perplexing and frustratingly annoying outcomes of the movie "reaction" channels of this gen. I mean, who talks and yammers on constantly and consistently about so many trivial irrelevancies while a "story" is being told to you. They actually interject memes into films such as "The Godfather", "Saving Private Ryan" or "The Exorcist", ...for Christ sakes!🤨
🎬The adolescent impatience of asking so many unnecessary (to be explained) questions about things that defeat the whole purpose of telling a story. Like the child in the car constantly asking, ..."Are we there yet? ...Are we there yet? ...Are we there yet!?". Questions about things that have already been explained, but were so busy yammering on about inconsistent, narcissistic irrelevancies that you never heard it.😲🤬
🎬They claim to have love & respect for film, yet seem to be absolutely clueless to the fact that "great" movies have 0% body fat. And as such, requires one's full attention, ...at all times.
🎓Sorry for the dissertation, but your statement I quoted, just set me off.😠😤
      🎟My apologies... 😏...😔...😮‍💨

Loved your honest reaction! It's odd that an emotional and sad movie can hit on one of the core things in life that makes it worthwhile, Hope. Something is going on in that movie that is so important, so fundamental, and a lot of times we miss it. We look around at our rooms or homes and sometimes feel trapped. Like today's situation is going to be forever, and it's not. We can't let our current situation drain us of that spark that keeps us going. Again, thank you for this. You asked if we cry when we watch this movie, yes, definitely. I even cry when I watch Reactors watch this movie. :) This movie has made such an impact on me, unlike any other.

In the Stephen King novel, "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption, " the character of Red staggered a car accident involving his wife's car for insurance, however, Red's wife took two passengers (a woman and child) in the car and all three were killed. Red was charged with three murders. In the film, we know that Red is in prison for murder, however, the details were not explained. In the novel, Ellis Redding is an Irishman, convicted in the 1930's. When Morgan Freeman was cast to play the role of "Red," A line in the script was added when Andy asks Red about his nickname, in response Red says, "Maybe it's because I'm Irish. "Anyone familiar with the book and the circumstances of Freeman getting to play "Red," understands the joke.

The former Ohio State Reformatory shower location had no water. A fire truck provided the water, which as very cold. What you see was done largely in one take. Andy's prison wing was a set built for the film, since torn down, at a local warehouse. The laundry was an actual area dry cleaning in the area, the wood shop was is an actual wood shop in the area. The wood shop still has eye line markings on the ceiling (an X that marks the spot of a non existent wall speaker) so that the actors are all looking at the same spot. The location of Brooks' and Red's room in the Brewer is surprisingly actually inside the prison. The exterior of the Brewer, first floor right side corner is The Portland Daily Bugle location. More than half of the prison you see in the movie has since been torn down to make room for a new prison. it is open for tours where many locations inside the prison that were used for the movie can be visited. $370,000 1966 dollars adjusted for inflation today is $3,604,804.94

If there is anything close to a perfect movie, this is it. I used to hate prison movies when I was younger because they all seemed so bleak and bereft of hope, then I saw this. I've lost count of how many times I've seen the actual film and reactions for it, but it still affects me the same way every time - maybe harder as I get older. Such a shame that such a "perfect" movie had the misfortune of being released the same year as Forrest Gump and losing every award to it. The team of King & Darabont created two of the best films ever, and neither got the awards they deserved.

After watching this great film a hundred times, I am still most moved by the poetry at the end.
I find I'm so excited I can barely sit still
Or hold a thought in my head
    I think it's the excitement
Only a free man can feel
A free man at the start of a long journey
    Whose conclusion is uncertain
I hope I can make it across the border
I hope to see my friend and shake his hand
I hope the Pacific is as blue
As it has been in my dreams
    I hope....

The novella, "Rita Heyworth and the Shawshank Redemption", ends with Red planning on breaking his parole and leaving to find Andy. The reader is left hanging, but with a sense of hope that Red will do it.
In the original script of the film, the last scene is that of Red on a bus, on his way to find Andy. Fortunately, the film makers decided that the theater audience deserved a fully satisfying ending, so they added Red meeting Andy on the beach. 👍👍

In my personal opinion having read it long before the movie adaptation, I'd say it's pretty damned spot on. It's also one of the few Stephen King stories (that I'm aware of anyway) that has a truly happy ending. Even if the main characters had to go through hell to get there.

This movie didn't do very well at the box office. It was only years later that people found out what a gem this was. First time to your channel. I look for genuine reactions and good commentary at the end. I just subscribed. Carry on.

The story was a novella in the anthology Different Seasons. I read it as a tween so i was so excited when the fim came out, which pretty much nails the story. In the book, red is white, but thats so minor. Its more obvious when reading that Red is the main chatacter. The redemption is HIS. He goes from hopeless to finding hope and is thereby redeemed. I actually prefer the story rnding, in which the final line is red's last two words.
    "I hope."
You dont know whether he finds andy, but that is secondary. He finds hope.

I'm always fascinated with the little black triangles that woman paint on the outer edge of their eyes. I don't think I'll ever get used to it, but once I see it, I can't un-see it and then all I can think about is the eye triangles and how I don't understand fashion one bit. Its just... such a bizarre thing to do IMO. Another fascinating woman makeup trend is those giant spider-like eyelashes, what an 'interesting' look that is. Anyways... that was a good reaction, I like this style of "reactor", you did a fine job of paying attention and not hamming it up for the camera, you didn't do any annoying plot predictions, you didn't constantly make jokes, your banter was interesting and was the perfect amount, some reactors talk during the entire movie. And of course, your ending reaction was good, it felt genuine. Also love that you didn't waste any time by starting the video with a "Coming Up" edit or some overlong drawn out intro. So yeah, good job, you and your eye triangles were fun to watch.

I have seen this movie in its entirety probably six or seven times and watched easily 50 different YT reactions to this movie and it was only a month or so ago I was watching another YT reaction to this when it suddenly occurred to me for the first time that the Shawshank "Redemption" isn't Andy Dufresne's redemption... it's Ellis Boyd "Red" Redding's redemption... remember Hope is a good thing. BTW in the original Stephen King novella "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption", Ellis Boyd Redding is a redheaded Irish-American so OBVIOUSLY his nickname is "Red" but the BRILLIANT casting of Morgan Freeman in the motion picture role requires the not so obvious explanation that "maybe it's because I'm Irish" which adds so many many many extra layers of meaning and social commentary to the character

A lovely RomCom from the 1930's is "My Man Godfrey," (1936) starring William Powell and Carol Lombard. It is set after the stock market crash and the last years of the Great Depression in New York City where there is a big class divide between the wealthy Fifth Avenue elite and the working class/unemployed.

*I LOVE this movie because of HOPE.* Andy didn't know it would take 19 years digging for freedom. Or how awful crawling in 500 yards of feces and little air would feel. It's my metaphor to life. Keep trying. Don't allow negative voices to change your mind. Andy's beacon of HOPE gave Red the REDEMPTION to keep his promise instead of living in fear.

    • @Simdoog
      @Simdoog Місяць тому

It actually took Andy 17 years to dig his way out. As he came to the prison in 1947, but as Red says, he asked for that first poster in 1949. Just sayin’

Surely thats the greatest quartet of films ever released at roughly the same time!!

Great reaction like always, this is a masterpiece of cinema, A masterclass in pretty much every category. An incredible script, wonderful direction, gorgeous score and phenomenal performances by Freeman and Robbins. Some fun facts about this movie, Stephen King sold the rights for $1,000,
The baseball throwing scene took 9 hours The scene where Andy and Red are standing and talking outside whilst Red is throwing a baseball back and forth took a staggering nine hours to film. Morgan Freeman threw the ball endlessly the whole time. The following day, when he arrived at work, his arm was in a sling.
Clint Eastwood and Harrison Ford were considered for Red, and Brad Pitt audition for the role of Tommy but he pulled out of the role because of another movie, later Brad Pitr said he regretted that decision. Red’s mugshot is Morgan Freeman’s son , When you see Morgan Freeman’s papers at one of his parole hearings, there are mugshots of a younger Red attached. These are actually photos of Alfonso Freeman - Morgan’s son. He also had a small part in the movie. He was one of the inmates shouting ‘Fresh fish!’
Stephen King’s novella was titled, ‘Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption.’ This was shortened for the film because they didn’t want people to think it was a biopic about Rita Hayworth. This was proven to be true when several actresses applied for the ‘lead role of Rita Hayworth’. Keep up the amazing work.

It's difficult to watch this movie without an emotional response even after watching it several times because it digs directly at your heart despite many people deserve to be in jail, but some are incarcerated innocently because most judicial systems are as corrupt as other parts of a government are. How do you rehabilitate someone who endures constant emotional and physical trauma while incarcerated...you can't.
I recall going to jail for 2 weeks because I was homeless and could no longer afford insurance on my vehicle which I lived in and couldn't pay the 3,2500 in fines I was charged with, so the alternative was jail. I was surprised how many inmates weren't sorry for all the break-ins and thefts they committed on people, which many of them admitted they had no problem going right back to that life when they get out. Many bragged about the things they'd stolen, it was sick and pathetic. Some of the guards made life a living hell for you just because that's the kind of person they were. Rehabilitation is a bullshit word used by gov. officials to make it look like things are going in the right direction when it's not going in any direction except in a vicious circle of further abuse. Get busy living, or get busy dying...
