@@hersheljones9467 I bowl at a house that leaves tons of belt marks. I agree we shouldn't have to go talk to the league secretary or tournament director for cleaning approval every time one lands directly on our track.
Yes I call and talked to Brunswick about my 2016 purple hammer and they are shipping me a new GB4 pearl and they said I could keep the old purple hammer and I was surprised. I thought they wanted them back to test. Thanks for all you do for the sport. Paul
The no plug rule isn't for changing your own layout, it's primarily to shut down the used ball market. Now you have to buy from them if you want a particular ball, because you need it fresh out of the box (unless somehow you're exceedingly lucky, having the same exact measurements).
No ball reps/coaching in qualifying or step ladder, only during practice sessions. Not everyone can have a ball rep so it creates an unfair advantage to players who are already established and are staffers.
I agree with you 100%. Just like the sport of tennis there is NO coaching allowed during match play. Should be the same for PBA once you’re in a game like you said for qualifying or step ladder then it should only be the bowler to figure shit out on their own. Isn’t that the reason why they are “pros”? If you’re a pro and can’t figure your own issues out on the fly then something is wrong there.
Adding to Mark's comment on PBA bowlers being "salesmen" on TV, I'm sure Storm loved Belmo throwing a HyRoad Nano and Hustle HYB in 2022. Both those balls were released late 2017-early 2018
Weight Hole: Agree with bringing it back. It turned my OG Hammer Black Widow into a Black Spare ball. While it hooks still obviously, it doesn't make the hockey stick flip on the backend and as a result, it's great for leaving flat 10s all day.
So for the weight hole - the whole reason it went away because once you put the weight hole you were able to really stretch the differentials, which is why they opted to remove them. (That is how it was explained to me). I agree the impact on scoring has been minimal, its still a step in the right direction in terms of keeping balls closer to what the specs should be in terms of RGs and Differentials
@@michaelsantonastaso3907 not sure if stretch is accurate. Maybe you are right? From my understanding the diff you see on a new ball is changed slightly when you drill finger/thumb holes in the ball. The extra weight hole brings the ball back to that diff on the box and sometimes up to the maximum allowable by rules 0.060. I think they took it away because USBC or whoever said that created high flaring balls that took off more oil from the lane. I have no weight holes and still flare over half the ball. FAIL LOL. But I don't know much about drilling so I might be wrong hah.
They should incorporate the rule : if a bowling ball is thrown on the approach before the foul line, it should be a foul. Avoids all the ball marks on the approach.
There's a guy in one of my leagues that stands at the back of the approach takes 3 small skip steps and rolls the ball from halfway on the approach. And he only throws urethane and never wipes the balls off so not only does it mark up the approach it all leaves a bunch of small oil patches
@@McCollum2009 In that case it's the center's job to say something... because not only is he beating up the approaches unnecessarily, putting oil on the approach endangers everybody else. Wouldn't take much to put somebody flat on their a$$. If I owned the place, that guy would either have to learn how to bowl, or go somewhere else.
If a player fouls by crossing the line, but refuses to correct his eight pin to a zero, an official should be allowed to enforce it using a 1911 chambered in .45 while informing the bowler that they are about to enter a world of pain.
I personally disagree with the weight hole revert. I actually like the rule change. I like the fact that symmetrical balls maintain much more of the symmetric property by always putting the mb in the thumb. I'm also fully aware this is a myopic point of view as a tournament bowler with a 12+ ball arsenal and not a league bowler who carries three balls.
I’ve recently started thinking about the rules in regard to ball surface. I don’t really understand why bowlers aren’t allowed to adjust bowling ball surface after competition starts. I don’t understand why the rule was initially made. And I don’t know if it’s totally relevant anymore. If your instincts tell you half way through game three that more surface on your balls cover would help then you should be able to make that adjustment. Then reap the rewards for the smart or bad decision. I don’t see how it could negatively affect competition. Idk, maybe I’m crazy.
You’ve made me think about this now. My answer would be, that it would waste too much time. Imagine let’s say 30% of the players need to do this and they need to use the pro shop’s equipment to do it. Well they can only do so many at a time. That would take a 3 hour league night to at least 4-5 hours. I don’t wanna wait for people to do this. I still kick that players ass on the lane with their newly surfaced ball and my ball the way it was from the start. I like this rule and hope it doesn’t go away. People are mindful about other peoples time and people changing the surface would just take too much time. Hell people who take smoke breaks are irritating because of how long they take.
@@stevendefeo8424 I’m not talking about a whole resurfacing job. I’m talking about taking an abralon pad and quickly scuffing your ball up. Plus, if there already isn’t a rule about being in attendance when it’s your turn to bowl then there definitely should be. That would be an easy fix to avoid the problem that you are concerned with.
1st. I have been unsubscribed by the algorithm. So I subbed again. 2nd, rule I would change is foul light. 1 to two inches at the line make no difference.
I've got a 5 ball arsenal all of which are used balls not because I think the plugged holes make a difference it's because I got them ALOT cheap than buying them new. Example: I live in the uk and I got a motiv vemon shock for £49 and the cheapest new price I found was £160 plus what ever the shipping and customs would be from Germany
Well that doesn’t really effect the pba since they just get whatever they want cheap anyway. I don’t think the used will ever implement that rule on us regular bowlers so no worries
Weight holes absolutely need to be brought back. It gets to be really burdensome for a customer to tweak ball reaction with weight holes being outlawed. Now, a customer has to plug the entire ball and redrill a different layout if ball motion doesn’t end up ideal-whereas it used to be so much simpler and cost effective to just add a small hole.
@@remoevans7847 For most bowlers, in most situations, it is almost impossible to know exactly and specifically how a ball is going to roll until after it’s drilled and used, regardless of symmetric vs asymmetric. There are various types of symmetric and asymmetric motion, as well as various levels of strength and earliness of phase transition from skid to hook, and hook to roll relative to the matchup of core dynamics to a bowler’s speed and rev rate. Weight holes allow a bowler to try a ball out, observe what’s working and what isn’t, and then make adjustments when cover surface changes aren’t enough.
I understand there have to be some rules. Just like a corked bat. As a new bowler now I kinda get why there are not more balls with style. I came from playing pool and I enjoyed the beauty of my pool cue, with jade inlays and the craftsmanship. Now when I'm buying bowling balls I don't the like the bright circus-like colors, I was looking for style. James Bond kind of style like a silver ball, or gold inlays, or something to make my ball mine. Not factory-made. I like the Belmo Clear, but those are not available, I liked the all-white Quantum Bias, but that is also not a choice. So I felt like I am stuck to join the circus like everyone else. (i just purchased the Brutal Collision). BUT now with these rule changes and RULES in general I get it, it's too hard and risky to be innovative with balls. I just wish some company would come out with a line that sold bespoke quality in my bowling ball and gear. Solid colors with class, or clear, or metal inlays. Is it me or am I the only one who doesn't care for a bright checked, polka-dot, Ronald McDonald outfits?
In my local league there's this guy who throws a black widow, but it's a urethane ball it's apparently one of the older ones made in the Kentucky factory.
I would want them to allow the ability to clean bowling balls again during competition and remove the no electronic devices(headphones), there are some alleys that don't maintain their centers and ball can comeback really dirty with belt marks etc. as far as weight holes it shouldn't have even been an issue, but that being said does any have any thoughts on Tom Daugherty's weight hole? I know he says he puts his pinky in it, but it is as big as a thumb hole
I think the USBC needs to be less strict on the softness of balls, because while yes they do dig in a hook a little more, the simple fact is that all balls will get softer over time and it’s hard to create an equal playing field for the average bowler in that regard since they probably aren’t getting balls drilled as frequently as the guys on tour. And you still need to be accurate with a soft ball so I don’t like the rule… now it might be a little biased cause I loved my Spectre that I can’t use anymore but that’s my opinion
Update for you: The USBC just banned all 2016-2017 Hammer Purple Pearl Urethane (not including the overseas Black Widow Purple Pearl Urethane from 2017-2019) from EVERY type of USBC competition. So that will affect the league bowlers now. No 2016-2017 Purple Pearl Urethanes in ANY USBC-sanctioned league or competition.
@@youngvic22 softness. the 2016-2017 batches of the Purple Pearl Hammer fall below the USBC's hardness spec. any Purple Pearl Urethane Hammer made in 2018 or newer is still legal.
Agreed, too many people dick around and wait for others to go first even when they have the ball in their hands the pins are ready and no one bowling on the other side of them. But they will sit there and wait for you to go first as if they are more important knowing full well that you are not ready yourself.
While I agree that waiting for people who take too long(not at the bowling area) can be annoying but I don't feel its right to have to rush people or make em feel like they have to rush and mess with their rhythm when the go up to bowl. League is supposed to be fun.
@@EpicBattleCryz I agree it should be fun... and also there's no way to enforce it. But just like with other USBC rules, it should be "suggested" no more than 30 seconds
Weight of the pins up several ounces and lower the center of gravity in them. That would make the 'pocket' smaller for the high Rev players and wouldn't change it at all for most players. That would bring 'shot making' more into the game. My opinion...
I think all these rules don't effect the pba national tour at all. They just hop on the truck and get new balls anytime they want. For rule changes I think get rid of the foul line. I mean don't run down the lane but if you slide across the line barely it doesn't effect anything
Bowling already has too many rules. Reverting the weight hole would be a good start. How is that an advantage if everyone can drill weight holes? Just another stupid bowling rule..
Under the new rules would a weight hole be legal if you put a finger into it on every shot? Seems like this would turn the weight hole into just another finger hole.
@@MarcFromBerryland The problem is, where the weight hole goes to work right is not a place you can put a finger unless you have very weird hands. And if you put a finger in it without putting a finger in one of the normal finger holes, now that finger hole is a banned weight hole
SO Buffa admitted that the Pro Players have to promote the new balls to increase sales...period. This will alienate many league bowlers. I have balls that are 5 and 6 years old, they are my go to balls as I am very comfortable with them. Why do I need to spend $600 to $1000 every friggin year.
You don't NEED to do anything. Don't want new gear? Don't buy any... problem solved. Ffs, companies use pros to endorse everything under the sun... from athletic equipment and musical gear, to tooth paste and aspirin. It's nothing new... it's called advertising. It's always been bullshit, and it'll continue to be bullshit until the end of time. So why do they do it? Becau$e it work$....
The rule change was in the pba and it makes perfect sense don't buy new balls for leagues that's usbc governed... Therefore the 2 year rule does not apply, please learn bowling before complaining about it's guidelines and regulations, the usbc makes plenty of mistakes we as bowlers need them to hear about and we could use less of the useless complaining clogging the voices involved....
This ban is only for urethane balls and its only for the pba. For usbc you cannot use the purple hammer urethane that was made in 2016-2017 so unless all your backup balls are purple hammers you do not need to bye new balls every 2 years. Stop complaining about rules when you dont even fully understand them
Urethane isn’t great unless you have a pretty decent rev rate. Urethane blends the front to back for guys that typically have a pretty harsh reaction off the back of the pattern on sport shots. If you’re lower rev, you’re better off drilling a strong, slow asym to give you a better chance to carry the lighter hits
If the changes were made to help the manufacturer sell more. What about the people who actually have to buy their own equipment? I was under the impression they wanted more people to get involved with this sport.
I don't agree or disagree with having weight holes or having them back but definitely the pros gloves do not help you have an advantage in Bowling not at all a fair playing field is not getting rid of risk supports it's having sports makes a player because for some people that have a bad wrist or something or they can't create that red that the support will help them create it makes it a player failing player Fair playing field so they can compete with the bowlers that naturally are able to create all those revolutions with wanting to matter if they're one-handed or two-handed now your handicapping some bowlers that are not going to ever compete with a lot of these high Rev one-handers and two-handers
I think PBA should make the same rule for Reactive Bowling Balls to be Fair. Urethane balls, todays balls price is too expensive for me. My ball speed is 12-13mpg with heavy roll. My ball speed is too slow to roll any Reactive ball. I believe, the Definiation of a Illegal ball is a bowling ball that gains momentum as it hits the pins. If there is a ball that gets strikes every shot no matter where it hits the pocket or middle of the Head pin. I can see that because it give a Unfair Advantage. Is there any Science to back up the PBA's opinion that a Softer Urethane ball gives a Unfair advantage ? Did they make this decision because too many Bad bowlers Complain because the effect the Urethane balls have on the Lane ? Reactive dry's up the Front part of the Lane. It makes my ball Hook way too soon. Personally, If I move Left to the left gutter and Loft the ball, I will hurt my Lower Back. There needs to be Fairness before any Biased decisions are made. Paul Klanecky
A couple of things. 1) There isn't a ball that strikes every time it hits the pins. 2) I'm not sure I understand your reasoning by saying "the definition of an illegal ball is one that gains momentum as it hits the pins". There are two types of velocity with a bowling ball, the speed you throw it towards the pins (forward), and the speed at which it changes direction at the break point (sideways). The second is the one I think you have an issue with, and by definition weight blocks inside reactive balls can make this velocity change quicker than plastic, urethane, etc. And honestly, this velocity isn't what matters. If you think of force (F = ma), all that matters is mass and acceleration. The heavier the ball, and the faster you throw it, the more force it hits the pins. The change of direction downlane only helps with entry angle. If you take the two different balls that weigh the same and throw it the same speed and they enter the pocket at the same angle, nothing else matters. One could be thrown from first arrow and the other from the sixth arrow, doesn't make a difference. One can be plastic and the other can be reactive, doesn't make a difference. 3) The issue with the older urethane isn't because they were unfair when they were made. The PBA has a ruling on how "hard" the balls can be. Over time, these batches of specific urethane balls became softer, and fell below the floor of what was acceptable by PBA rule. If you think about a car tire, if you deflate it a bit, more of the tire contacts the road and it has more control. It makes for a sludgy movement. Same with bowling balls. If they get softer, they will start to hook more, and perform in a way they weren't intended. 4) I'm not sure what formats you bowl in, but 12-13 MPH is really slow. And if you're throwing urethane, they're designed to hook in the front. So don't throw urethane when the fronts are burned up. If it's just league, you shouldn't be running into situations where the lanes change a ton, can't say the same depending on other types of tournaments. But the ball will always move in direction of rotation, so if you're really spinning it sideways with slow speed, it'll be hard to keep the ball on the correct side of the head pin anyway. More end over end roll really helps with slower ball speed. Also using a reactive ball that is weak, meaning it hooks later instead of early like urethane can help a lot as well. Having said all that, reactive balls change the lane that is conducive to consistency. Bowlers like to see oil in the front, and dry in the back of the pattern. Reactive balls take oil off the lane. When the front starts to get dry, bowlers move inside to catch more fresh oil, and feed the ball to the same breakpoint that is still dry. When urethane is used, it simply pushes the oil down the lane with the balls. This also makes the front of the lane dry, but it also makes the back of the lane oily. So when people move left to catch more oil in the front, and send it to the same break point, there is now oil there that wasn't there before and the ball doesn't hook. Hook up front and hang in the back is the worst ball reaction to have, no matter what ball you are throwing. Personally I'd rather put the emphasis on the ball manufacturers to make a reactive coverstock/core combination that is super weak for the higher rev bowlers who struggle to go straight. This way oil isn't pushed down lane and the integrity of the oil pattern is preserved throughout competition.
@@DisturbedPsic0 Reactive Resin Balls are designed to hit the Pins Harder than Urethane. Since, Reactive Resin Balls came out, the PBA averages has Gone UP each year. When Urethane balls were introduced we bowled on Wood lanes. The effect the lane close to the Head Pin would DRY out and hook too much. We had to move in because the Oil was heavy at the Foul Line. Now, with today's lane and bowling ball its not the opposite problem. Urethane balls carry oil down the lane making it slicker.
@@MakeMoneySolutions702 averages have gone up for a few reasons. One is that the patterns have gotten better and more conducive to scoring. Another is the reactive balls, but not because they hit harder. The combination of the cores and coverstocks allow the manufacturers to control where on the lane the ball hooks. Some reactive balls hook early, some hook in the midlane, and others hook in the back. This gives the players more options and when you give talented people more options, they will tend to do better.
It’s impossible to lease (edit: please) everyone and “fair” doesn’t exist because everyone has a different perspective of what fair is. As long as people are following the rules set in place then that is fair and if rules change then the player has to adapt to those changes or stop playing. Pretty simple.
I wouldn't change a goddamn thing. Bowling is an awesome sport. Technique and technology have revolutionized the sport for a new generation. If we can't figure out how to mesh the new and old together, this sport is going to die.
I fully agree. Any traditionalist complaining about a legalized style that requires skill, athleticism, and practice to do should get a warning for un-sportsman like conduct that can lead to a fine. Adapt to change and get better.
I have a sneaking suspicion that the pba just did this to spark controversy. I don't imagine that players or ball manufacturers are too happy about this.
Really not a fan of the way the USBC has been handling things recently. I thought the weight hole thing in 2020 was a little dumb but no big deal. Then they introduced a rule where you need an X on the palm side of your ball if there's no thumb hole, which is also fine but I think it's solving a problem that never really existed. But now they're introducing all of these new restrictions as if the sport of bowling has been unfair and failing, when in reality, bowling is the most popular now as it's been the whole 21st century. I just think it's unnecessary, but that's my personal opinion.
I'd go in for testing all PBA and LPBT members for steroids and other performance enhancers. The way some pros throw the ball nowadays I don't see how they bowl 50-100 games a week or more without hurting their wrists, elbows and backs. In order to be taken seriously as an Olympic and international sport, there has to be testing for PFDs. I'm sure that juicing gives a bowler a lot more of an edge than using a ball that is a couple of points soft.
I kind of agree but do want to say during the time I was kinda thinking about getting really serious about bowling 20 years ago, I was throwing 50+ games a night 2 and sometimes 3 times a week. I never once had any issues with wrist, back or elbow. Once you start doing it that much, you build up the strength surprisingly quickly. And I was and still am a very high rev, med-high velocity bowler. The only physical issues I had were my left knee (born with it, genetic problem I can nothing about) and my forearm would get quite sore if I let it cool down. When that happened, I just had to throw through the pain for about 1 game and it would loosen up and be fine. As long as I kept loose and warm, I could throw all day and all night. Unfortunately, a combination of my bad knee and the fact that I could never quite get the accuracy of the true pros convinced me that professional bowling was not an option for me. I still bowl occasionally and I'm still pretty good but I have to admit, if I thought I was good enough to do it, I probably would get on steroids and HGH to see if that would get me to the next level.
I find it hilarious so many people in the comments are upset about the rules that will never apply to them since they will never (almost never) bowl in a PBA national event which is where most if not all of these rules apply. 🤣
Rule change: all USBC league competition should be on a flat pattern. Change length of oil, sure, but the same amount should be applied across all 39 boards. Watch the scores normalize.
This is nothing more than the manufacturers forcing consumers to buy a new ball. They hit a grand slam with the purple hammer. It has a huge range that it can be used for and they realized one ball was replacing 3-5 different balls. So sad
Do you believe urethane equipment would have become popular again if two handed bowling didn't exist? Just an observation - there seems to be a connection between the two but I'm wondering i it's just a coincidence. Thanks.
When a weight hole essentially gives 2 handed Bowlers 6 different layiuts on each bowling ball, it is good to be banned. Maybe only allow weight holes for bowlers who use a thumb?
@Bandit, Keeper of the Zone I'm confused what you mean, its not like 2 handers can turn the ball upside down, they have to have a mark for orientation that rests in their palm
@@jakeb_91 the rule requiring the mark for orientation was created because bowlers who don't use their thumb could turn the ball around for a different layout.
I disagree with weight hole. I think that the bowler should improve a bit. And or match up the ball with the bowler. I like mo... but people just purchase balls they have no business buying. If you have low speed high revs there is no reason to get a roto grip Gem. Just my opinion.

I still dont LOGICALLY understand that hate for Two hands. New Rule: No bowling gloves of any kind. Storm has a new glove (without brace support) out that I now see in leagues. The glove apparently puts the palm in a better position. Other companies will try to bypass the brace support rule and make more of these products. The only thing you should be allowed to have on your hand or fingers is tape and powder. Seems to me that we are only protecting the business and not the bowlers or fans. All about the mighty dollar. I get it. But I adamantly disagree. Wrist guards? I have arthritis. You want to level the playing field? Why the HELL would you take the handicapped out of the game? "Cleansing" the sport? You may disregard this ridiculous rule change. I am very concerned about discrimination! If you have wrist, muscle problems...it's like taking handicapped access points to stores away from those that need them. Handicapped people shop elsewhere...only people that can walk can shop here! Sound trivial? Then that really concerns me. Think about it. Talk to the reps? Yup. Justify their jobs and disregard the average bowler. I thought the PBA and USBC were trying to gain a following. Seems if they aren't careful it will deter people. Especially those that have limited funds and cannot afford new balls every two years, or those YOU took the level playing field from by banning wrist support??? Holy cow!

The no plug rule isn't for changing your own layout, it's primarily to shut down the used ball market. Now you have to buy from them if you want a particular ball, because you need it fresh out of the box (unless somehow you're exceedingly lucky, having the same exact measurements).

There's a guy in one of my leagues that stands at the back of the approach takes 3 small skip steps and rolls the ball from halfway on the approach. And he only throws urethane and never wipes the balls off so not only does it mark up the approach it all leaves a bunch of small oil patches
@@McCollum2009
In that case it's the center's job to say something... because not only is he beating up the approaches unnecessarily, putting oil on the approach endangers everybody else.
100% agreed. this is not nam.
You’re out of your element donnie!
Yeah…well…you know, that’s just like, your opinion, man.
Yes I agree being the weight hole back
I personally disagree with the weight hole revert.
@@jakeb_91 yeah i know it will never affect us thank god lol
Weight holes absolutely need to be brought back. It gets to be really burdensome for a customer to tweak ball reaction with weight holes being outlawed. Now, a customer has to plug the entire ball and redrill a different layout if ball motion doesn’t end up ideal-whereas it used to be so much simpler and cost effective to just add a small hole.
If you want asymmetric ball motion, the other option is don’t buy a symmetric ball.
You might like the new Motiv Venom. Black ball with gold inlay
At the center I bowl at I get belt marks on my ball constantly.
There's not rule on the size of the holes. As long as there's a finger in it at the release.
Any chance y’all can do a hyped pearl vs electrify pearl review. Considering between the two and can’t find a comparison.
They should allow up to one extra whole then what is being used. So people can change up style with out it being a big ordeal.

Weight of the pins up several ounces and lower the center of gravity in them. That would make the 'pocket' smaller for the high Rev players and wouldn't change it at all for most players. That would bring 'shot making' more into the game. My opinion...

Start with a 6. That’s means 2016. The rest of the numbers mean something else 🙂
Wait what? Buffa admitted that they SHOULD promote their newer stuff but he just said that the pros will do whatever they have to do to win.
Stop complaining about rules when you dont even fully understand them
So if I use a plugged bowling ball in my bowling alleys league that has a usbc card, can I still use that plugged bowling ball or not
Plugged balls are banned only in the PBA
so if you have a brand new undrilled hammer from 2018, you wouldn't be able to drill it and use it in the pba?
Not for PBA National events, but it’s ok for PBA Regional and PBA50 events. And any USBC sanctioned competition
Is the purple hammer useful for strokers or more for high rev players?
Useful for both. It's a really good ball.
Agree with smarthall but if you’re a low rev player fill out your reactive arsenal first
Each National PBA Tournament should have a strict set of equipment that can be used by participants. Much like Nascar.
I have struggled to find good layouts to fit my game since the weight hole rule change
Buy a ball with an asymmetric core, problem solved.

I felt like he avoided the question about local league bowlers. I wish he would've talked about regular bowlers not about nationals or championships.

Why allow tape or powder then? If someone's release is so bad that they need tape or powder on their hand, then they need to find another hobby. 🙂
You would think everyone would be using these gloves if they gave an unfair advantage.
I was wondering why people don't bowl with undrilled balls and just use those sticky rubber gloves that NFL wide receivers use where if they can swat the ball they've caught it. Then I found "no holes" balls can't really be biased weighted then, because you'd have endless layouts at your fingertips.
BAN THE PURPLE HAMMER ITS A CHEATER BALL.
Holy cow!
You didn’t pay attention wrist supports are banned on the PBA tour, not banned for regular people, plugged balls are banned on the PBA tour, not banned for regular people.
BTW, you sound like a businessman. Not someone that wants everyone to try bowling.
