When You Should Use Urethane Or Reactive Bowling Balls?

  • Today we're talking about urethane vs. reactive. We tend to see some people not understand why so much urethane is being used in today's game. For the most part, urethane hooks extremely early compared to most reactive bowling balls. This will usually lead to a smoother motion off the end of the pattern. When the lanes are tough and it seems that most reactive is just a bit too much off the end of the pattern, urethane can definitely be an option!
Another way that some people try to combat this type of condition is with short-pin equipment, or even some very strong reactive balls to tame down the motion off the end of the pattern!

When I should use Reactive? Never. When should I use urethane? Always.
I have had zero luck using any resin balls over the years I have bowled.
They burn up or flip around like crazy and over all provide extremely inconsistent results on the lanes week in and week out.
That's a roll coaster ride I stopped buying tickets to.
Once I switched to urethane my ball reaction became consistent as well as my average, now I can focus on shot making and improving as a bowler.
    That's my two cents.

When reactives first came out, we learned pretty quickly about overreaction. A lot of houses would only strip the backs once a week and the lanes really played differently that first league afterward.

I love that idea. Seeing it would help a bunch. Not that you need my vote but seeing 3 patterns would be awesome. Great video!

I’m an average bowler. I score in the 180’s most of the time. I watch a ton of these bowling videos about this ball and that ball and why you should use one and not the other. I usually can pick up some helpful information and knowledge. They talk about staying behind the ball or coming around the side. They talk about moving your feet right or left and what line to use. One thing all these videos seem to have in common is that they seem tailored to the rev dominant player. I wish some of these videos would give examples of how the ball will react for a low rev speed dominant player who doesn’t hook the ball near as much.

Likely because high rev players benefit from switching to Urethane way more than a low rev player. It’s all about controlling the angle into the pocket. In drier conditions, a reactive ball hooks too much for a pro. Therefore they change to a urethane ball so it hooks less when it meets friction and enters the pocket at the correct angle. For a low rev player, a reactive ball might be perfect in comparison… switching to urethane won’t do much for you except maybe playing a couple of boards closer to the gutter with the same aim spot downlane… This may only be beneficial later after a couple games and the oil is burned up for you.
Another reason might be to blend the oil pattern if the oil pattern cliffs a lot…

Real quick what is your ball speed when releasing the ball im around 16-17 mph. Also should i wipe down the purple pearl after each throw or wipe off the oil?

You mention three length oil patterns to decide which would be better. Pls do video

I’m a high rev player that usually starts on 25 and works my way further left. I’ve been trying to throw my double cross starting on 10 with not much success. Should I be playing further left with it as well?

Pretty easy choice for me, I only have 1 purple hammer urethane in my "arsenal"
