  • President Macron’s rise to the French Presidency two years ago stunned his country and Europe. Since that victory, the leader once nicknamed “jupiter,” has faced violent street protests by the “gilets jaunes,” and has become a target for nationalist politicians at home in France and across the continent.
As part of BBC World’s “Europe’s Identity Crisis” season, BBC Newsnight's Mark Urban examines Macron’s rise, troubles and future plans for France and the EU.

Macron is by far the most popular politician in France, too, crushing his statist, protectionist opponents, whether they be socialists, fascists or communists. A recent Harris poll found that his approval rating was 38%. Bayrou (the other centrist politician) was the second most popular politician. Hamon was on 22%, Le Pen was on 21%, and Melenchon was on 19%.

I've never actually heard an explanation of why "the rise of populism" is such a bad thing, though it is invariably spoken about as inherently terrible by the media. Surely government should be governing for the general population, and not the elites?

It's more like a type of phenomenon happening across the world. Politicians started to invoke emotions and support rather from pre-planned vision/manifesto. Instead they use speech which imply 'I'm the will of the people' or 'I'm an ally of the nation'.
The main thing about populism is to stir up the public in order to gain vote. Rather than the usual speech that declares politicans individual goal, the sympathising catchphrases are used more often.
It's actually quite smart for politicians to do this as they will gain the most sympathy from people. However it has the impression that the people are 'controled' as the big part of populist speech is to manipulate people's emotion.
Did this happen in the past? Yes. However political analyst started to write more about it as more populist leaders pops up around the world (Erdogan, Guaidó, Salvini, Trump etc).

@@gejesgejesj4107 thanks hope you get the gist of it.with my predictive text it is much easier just too forget a bit of punctuation. However I am working on that.Punctuation of numbers are quite accurate I hope and the figures do add up.
      In relation to differing sources.
I.e. financial times front page Feb 1 2019.
I.e. $655trillion derivatives markets financial times front page 2017.
Front page financial times headline 2016.Soros $850billion in a day attacking Chinese renminbi.
The devastation caused by currency attack is well reported too.
How its done is simple tedious and boring.
However like for W reckers knowing when a ship is due to arrive makes things much easier.
However the involvement of many of the hoi polloi with comparatively trivial amounts such as a $million or $billion dollars does make things so much more unpredictable.
I.e. 10million people moving a million .The lack of confidence in a currency before an event like brexit can lead to a hovering up cash secretly to be dropped like a stone to create panic in the markets.
It's all a bit hit and miss and the result could easily be as Churchill warned four years before wall street crash.
Any questions please Feel free to ask.
I have been interested in this topic for 7 years or more.
Since discovering Bretton Woods United news I was shocked and took weeks to actually sink in.
The size of the numbers I have had to sums a number of times to believe even with a calculator their veracity.
I put a bribe on a video offering a cash reward for the first to correctly challenge a figure.
A Diane Abbott being criticized for her maths video.
      No takers.
One suggested that my figure of 50 million tax payers was wrong.in the UK.
That there were only 30 million.obviously tax is played by more than that and 50,million is so much easier a number.
When dealing with a number like cost of NHS about £125billion a YEAR. It makes it much easier and obviously it's rounded up or down.
Take 2 figures about the cost of black wednesday reported last year 2018 by the daily "send in the navy "mail and telegraph. A 2billion £ difference.
Though at the time losses of enough 10 pound notes to go to the moon and back 15 times weds reported.
Soros earning a commission of £5 billion then reduced to £1billion.
Sorry the numbers reported by the 2 billionaire owned newspapers were £1billion telegraph £3.5 billion daily"send in the navy "mail.
However consider a figure of £500,billion lost and that money had instead been used to announce a 5 million new houses 2-3 bed homes costing 100,000.each.
The boost to the £ might have made more sense in the nonsensical world of gambling on currencies of course.

Marcon's plan for Britain: Let the UK leave the EU on the EU written deal/treaty (a bad deal) and watch the UK struggle, go down, and crawl back to the EU grovelling and begging to come back in. Under May's deal, written by the EU, that could happen. But the EU fear the No-Deal or WTO Option because Britain will do far better than under "May's" EU deal.

If you intentionally put up trade barriers between yourself and your biggest trading partner, your economy is going to suffer. The UK isn't going to sign any fantasy new trade deals any time soon, and they won't make up for the loss of trade with the Single Market.
