  • From the streets of Turin to Silicon Valley, people power is taking the world by storm. With frustrations rising and the old order apparently crumbling, who really has the answers?

December 2016 Italy's populist opposition is shaking up the establishment. They're days away from a referendum that could spell the end for the Italian government and make it the latest domino in the toppling international order.
Around the world populist leaders are connecting with voters fed up with politics as usual and exploiting anger at an establishment out of touch with ordinary people. But giving voice to people's frustrations is one thing, offering them real answers is quite another.
Five Star's anti-establishment message is resonating with voters. It is now Italy's biggest opposition party. The country has been crippled by recession and stagnating wages. With rates of inequality among the highest in Europe many people feel left behind by globalization and let down by political leaders.
Now the populists sense there may be an opportunity to bring those leaders down. A referendum on constitutional reform has become a vote of confidence in the ruling elite. Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has said he will resign if the country votes no. He's the latest politician to find himself in the firing line. Tonight, thousands of five-star supporters are gathering at a rally in Turin. Some are starting to ask what they might do with success.
Beppe Grillo has vowed to get rid of political parties but he certainly knows how to start one. Grillo's success has come through impassioned charges against the corrupt elites and global forces he blames for Italy's woes but five stars leaders may soon have a harder note to hear. A question of how they would tackle unemployment and inequality.
Two days after the rally Italians overwhelmingly voted no in the referendum. Prime Minister Renzi made good on his promise to stand down. It's another victory for populism as across the world charismatic leaders defy expectations. They're finding success selling deceptively simple answers to difficult questions. They almost always blame the failings of free trade and mass migration for rising inequality but is this the right target?
Few cities are immune to the uneven impact of globalization.
The latest venture from a San Francisco startup has the potential to turn one of America's most iconic industries on its head. Last year Uber paid $680 million for Otto, a company whose technology could fundamentally change trucking forever. It allows a truck to drive down a highway with nobody at the wheel. The company claims it could save the industry billions of dollars a year, reduce emissions by a third and eliminate the driver errors that cause up to 87% of truck crashes. But this bright sounding future has a dark side. A series of studies have found technology, not globalization, to be the biggest driver of inequality in developed countries. There were three and a half million people employed in trucking in America and with their industry seemingly the next in line for automation many face an uncertain future.
As inequality grows in Western democracies, wealthy California has become one of the most economically unequal states in America as technology has displaced many lower skilled jobs.
An alienated public turned on the establishment because it failed to provide answers. As some tech giants become as powerful as that establishment, it's a lesson they're starting to learn. So they're going back to school.
For too many people in western democracies progress is still something that happens to other people. Wealth does not spread itself. An underclass appears beyond help, finding a way to reconnect with them and provide an alternative to populism will be at the top of the agenda for the political and business leaders of tomorrow
THE AGENDA explores the defining questions of our time and seeks out the stories, solutions and the personalities who might just hold the answers. Discover the mould-breakers experimenting with new ways to approach some of the modern world's most fundamental issues; find out what happens when bold ideas and real life collide, and meet the leaders whose thoughts and actions are themselves helping to shape the agenda.
Series One of The Agenda: People Power gets to grips with the rise of populism and what lies behind it.

Circular economy is complete quackery. Renewable energy is good, but why can't we just build three nuclear reactors for each state instead of thousands upon thousands of solar plants and wind farms?

''the best argument against democracy is five minutes with the average voter'' even before Churchill we knew that the best form of government we know had a massive flaw, in ancient greece they had to force people to participate in politics
I am NOT saying abandon democracy but I would very much like to point out that most people simply do NOT care about politics enough, even when it concernes them, the only way to pull them in is ti appeal to their emotions, which is the absolute worst way to re-energize democracy
it's our fault we get fed bullshit all the time, it's the only way for politicians tog et votes, it's our fault that we don't make arguments and comprehensive plans prerequisites for out votes
because we simply don't care about competent arguments the best way to reach us are exaggerations or just down right lies, and ofc appealing to our emotions ''feel it in your stomach, not your head''
politics and political systems and most of all studyin the constitution is my line of work and I have to say that I am more disappointed in the cynicism and apathy of the voters than the political elites, when the only way to reach people and make them interested in politics is manipulating their emotions we have a massive problem on our hands
another problem we have is that we think of politicians as saviors who can singlehandedly make our lives better and simultaneously make them scapegoats for everything wrong in our lives, forgeting that the changes in our contries are far more complex than that
Sadly, at this moment in time, the way forward looks a lot like we'll be walking backwards, shutting ourselves in even if history has proven us time and time again that cooperation andworking together brings out the best of human kind and alienation, banking on hatred and intolerance bring out the worst

Every media outlet that's given up on the full-on liberal propaganda has shifted the gear to this other milder approach, going poetic and unspecific, even nihilistic, bittersweet envision of the future, because they can't argue anymore about the present.
The funny thing is this could very well have been a video about our future and how machines are taking over without a single drop of politics shoehorned into it and everyone would be agreeing and thinking about the problem. The way they did, though, can be summarized by reading some top comments here, everyone sees the dissimulation at work.

The economic effects of technological advancement is being understated. There is a domino affect that is causing greater issues than is reported. It was stated that 3 million truck drivers would be out of a job with self driving trucks. That leads to 3 million+ meals not being eaten at truck stop cafes. This leads to lay offs of college students supporting their college education through waiting tables. This leads to more people unable to educate themselves for the new tech jobs. This increases the gab between the haves and have nots, creating an even bigger divide in the nation. Not to mention that most technology jobs are in large urban areas and rural areas rely on the trucking industry for economic stability. This is becoming an issue of urban wants versus rural needs. This is what American politicians are not seeing. Education doesn't help you if there are no jobs in your town. Some may say that people just need to move to the city. Well, can the cities handle a mass influx of people?

    • @Awesomeguy614
      @Awesomeguy614 7 років тому +19

Wow, very well said. I thought of something similar as I saw the scenes of the truckers eating at the diner. If they're gone, who is going to eat there? Sure there will still be some customers but many of these places probably live off the truckers.
This whole election, in the US at least, showed the disconnect between urban elites and the rural periphery.

It is the price of a modernizing economy and a better standard of living and it has been happening since the industrial revolution. Yes truck drivers will lose their jobs, but think about this. If you were a shipping company would you rather have a continuous year round costs in labor, or pay for manufactured labor that is much more cheap and efficient? This is a good thing! The costs of shipping will go down which mean more money can be spent in other places, shipping companies can invest in other businesses which means better and cheaper products and the overall American economy will be improved. Advancement isn't some politically motivated unAmerican idea. It is what makes us strong.

    • @Awesomeguy614
      @Awesomeguy614 7 років тому +30

I never said its politically motivated or unAmerican but the fact is people will suffer. That's exactly what happened with the industrial revolution, many, many people ended up suffering a lot with the drastic changes. The reason populism has flared is because the political and media elites have become so disconnected with the suffering of those impacted by automation(and globalization as well but of course the Economist will underplay that for obvious ideological reasons) that those people are rebelling through democratic institutions.
Now, we're seeing elites cry about the people actually using their voice and I find that distasteful. Its their fault, they squandered the trust they had

An economy that cannot support its population - no matter how profitable it is - is unsustainable... The Industrial Revolution brought and created new lines of work; the complete automation of the work-force is set to cut jobs while creating very limited positions in maintenance.
These changes are not comparable and as it is now what we'll see from automation is aimed only at reducing the quantity of jobs available for the majority of people. While you are right that the spending-power of major corporations will be significantly advanced, the trickle-down effect your theory operates on will be mitigated by a lack of consumerism as unemployment rates skyrocket.

All mainstream media has the same simple answer to why right wingers and nationalists are rising globally. They sarcastically pose the question "Are immigrants and globalism really the whole problem? Or could it be that technology is taking a bite at the middle class too?" As if populists are not aware of the technology factor. Just because there are multiple factors, doesnt mean certain factors of that multitude are not correct. Nobody has ever said "immigration and solely immigration alone is the cause of all our economic problems" but by the way they produce these mini films, you would think that's what one side is arguing. This nihilistic, dishonest, manipulative behavior is why people have voted into office totalitarians whom are willing to hang "journalists" and end free press. If most mainstream journalists, reporters, and talk show hosts end up getting flogged and imprisoned during a revolution, I would have great difficulty finding sympathy for them.
They act like their denial of some factors some how poked a hole through the populist argument. If they cant frame the narrative sideways, they lose the argument, so the media will never ever have an adult conversation about anything. Always just spin, exaggerations, mockery, sarcasm, and all other forms of childish fuckery...

I am a little too, just because it gives lots of room for whoever is in charge to play games with such an income in government. I'm more for forcing businesses to compensate with shares along with wage and salaries that produce a dividend as a method to provide incomes to people. Meaningful amount of shares. Perhaps they can't be just sold for cash, but traded only, and those shares provide incomes.
Of course that would rock the apple carts of the oligarchs. But the system is about blow up the apple cart as it stands anyway.
A universal income wouldn't be extremely bad. But a share system would probably be better. And even coop agreements for basic goods like homes and apartments. You don't pay to a 3rd party that's just trying suck maximize profits and doesn't give a rats ass about the quality of the place, but has a living stake in keeping it nice because they live there too.
Mix of a shares and wage compensation, co-op, and universal basic income system will inevitably be the solutions especially as automation becomes that of Futurama. Seriously, you have robots that repair the robots. You don't need human labor whatsoever at that point.

The alternative is people are poor and jobless as automation continues to displace more jobs than it creates (because unlike big technological innovations in the past which would create new jobs in the same supply chain or open up a new supply chain run by people, almost every supply chain can now be automated aside from a few skilled technicians and engineers and a few other highly skilled positions).
But I agree about the concern regarding not voting out the "hand that feeds you" and state control. It's too much power concentrated in too few hands to be a good idea to completely centralize it. However, most effective countries with strong social nets create those programs away from the levers of government so that they can function somewhat autonomously (with the understanding that, if they're ineffective, government has the power to reform them). I think this is the model we need to keep in mind. It's not perfect, but I think it's probably the best option we have on the table.

Actually with border security and reduced migration, many of the so-called jobs that Americans could have filled remained empty. That's bc most migrants take jobs that Americans don't want. For instance in 2011, after the market crash and unemployment reached an all time high, there were 6,200 open farm jobs in North Carolina and only 256 applied, but only 7 worked. That's bc we live in the Information Age and most millenials are college-educated & tech savvy. They're more likely to seek jobs that reflect their education & that offer esteemed title or status. Nobody aspires to be a farm hand anymore. In the Industrial Age, not many baby boomers were as educated. They were more likely to do labor than to work in an office. Farm work requires skill that demands stamina from dawn til dusk. Many migrants are incredibly skilled & most certainly have the stamina, even traveling hundreds of miles to obtain work. This proves that they don't steal jobs, they fill a very real gap in many labor industries. Most of these will go to automation. But in the meantime, border restrictions have led to farms closing down, bc they can't compete against corporate farms that churn out more yield with automated machinery. And the best part is that these workers are taxed, yet can't reap the benefits of those taxes. It's basically free money that goes directly to the American ppl for programs like Social Security, Infrastructure, Public Safety, etc. We're idiots for closing down the borders bc that was money we could've used. Now Social Security is depleting and programs like the ones for Veterans and Medicare are dwindling. We completely misunderstood the value that migrants brought to our economy. Any money we paid them to work is most certainly not going to anyone else now. No millenial is going to do labor when they lack the skills to do so, especially if they can more easily make money online from their couch. We're dreaming if we think the old workforce of the Industrial Age is alive & kicking. It died when the Internet was born. Technology is our economic future. Get used to it.

Populism and demagoguery are a fact, in south america we are having a lot of trouble because of this. In Colombia, for example, they say the system is wrong (which is true) but they can't think about real solutions, as a result we had a pause of 2 months for the end of a half-century war and renegotiation came to nothing much different because they had no arguments...
The problem is that people with a low education often believe them just because their frustration is represented in their speech so the only way to fight these charismatic leaders is educating people and punishing the elites voting for new options, but real options.

No. 300 years ago more than 90% of the people were working in agriculture to feed the world. Now less than 10% do. The rest create other things for people to consume. People want bigger TVs, faster cars, yachts, a second car, a second house, space travel - you name it. Entertainment has exploded - people are spending hundreds of Billions to get entertained.
If there is labor for it, and there are money for it, there will be jobs to produce goods and services. There is no limit to consumption.
Sure not everyone can make their own app and get rich - if you don't have a great idea you can always work for someone who has. Or, at least, pays you salary.

Populism is the mentality that "the Elites" in whatever form they take (Academic (Scientists)[this one is silly], Financial(The 1%), within the Government(Corrupt Politicians)), are AGAINST "the people".
It's not a system of voting, and it's not quite a political stance? It's more like, just being pissed off at all the people in charge.
Because of this it isn't really unique to any political or economic system.

    • @BIONICLECLAYPOKEMON
      @BIONICLECLAYPOKEMON 5 років тому

As a result though, skillful politicians or con men will abuse this distrust in the powers that be, making the situation worse, feeding in a comfortable cycle of pissing off constitutes but being able to blame "The elites".
      This is a bad outcome.
We also run the risk of things just absolutely going to hell in a handbasket.
      Also a bad result.
Even letting it reign free, it has a tendency to go towards authoritarianism, if it really starts deciding elections.
      Another bad end.
So why is it a bad thing? It can't really work in the long run, it can't end well, and if we don't come up with something else we're kind of in danger of things going to hell in a handbasket.

Technological advancements have benefited humans in the past. Look at the Industrial revolution. Although millions lost their jobs, our overall life quality has gotten better. At the same time, although we've gotten healthier and our life expectancy has risen, millions of people did lose their jobs, they were sacrificed for our well being, this we shouldn't forget.
I understand peoples outrage against these rapid changes that threaten their jobs and income, but shouldn't we focused on softening their transition. Shouldn't we discuss policies that benefit this transition, from manual labor to automation? Like reeducation Programs, banning companies from firing veteran workers and having the workers do the same tasks the robots do?
At the same time I'm wondering what should we and our children learn for the future, what should we prepare for, so that we can work and have an income? Or will we live in a Utopia where people won't have to work anymore, where robots take over our activities - and we benefit of their labor? I personally don't think that Utopia will come until, let's say 100 - 200 years, so I still need to know what should I teach my kids, so that my grand-grand-grand children will get to live in the before mentioned Utopia.

This is false. I think there is a consensus building among most futurists that technology is going to create a huge unemployment crisis. It will create new jobs in the short-term but in the long term, those jobs will be made redundant by technology as well.
Moreover, the number of new jobs it creates will be dwarfed by the jobs lost.

Anyone not with the program would be persecuted and the pursuit of happiness would be crushed.

Futurists nearly 100 years ago said this day would come. Forty-five years ago I wrote a short story about a robot that escaped his owner to seek out a lawyer to help it. The robot was a model DS, from Dredd Scott. Displaced workers must be compensated for the loss of jobs, and welfare is not the answer. I can write an essay, by my cousin can not. He can rebuild a diesel engine, but I can not. Today's problem of automation destroying jobs is not new, but we already have more people than jobs. My great-grandchildren may face a time where technology will refuse to work for us. We could be on a road to disaster.
