It's interesting to see that France is willing to accept American support when it comes to the conflict in Ukraine and their own defense needs. However, when faced with the broader struggle between democracy and autocracy on the global stage, President Macron seems to adopt a policy of neutrality or isolationism. While this approach may appear to prioritize France's long-term defense interests, it's worth considering the potential consequences if the United States were to lose against China in the global competition for influence. The spread of China's system of governance could be detrimental to countries that share democratic values, such as France and the US. Given the common principles of freedom that these two nations uphold, it might be more beneficial for France's long-term security to actively support and collaborate with the United States in order to maintain a balance of power and protect shared values on the world stage.

China in its thousands of years of history never, and don't have any intention of intervention in other country's system of governance. All the Chinese want are to doing business and making mutual beneficial relationship with other country. It's the US that keep making other countries succumbing to its hegemony by dictating that the whole world must worship the so called democracy system of governance. Those who don't listen to the US the CIA would be sent to the country to create local cracks and overthrow the democratic elected leader and then installed a puppet to serve the interests of the US instead of the local people. The US also wanted to create local cracks in China, by stirring up conflicts in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Tibet and Xinjiang, but it accidentally kicked a solid steel wall. That's why lately we could see the US politicians all gone mad by making baseless accusations on China.

Strategic autonomy will only work when France stops deluding itself into thinking that France's interests are Europe's interests.
The lukewarm response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine did not win any favors from their Eastern European compatriots. US & UK did all the heavylifting in the response of the invasion because the French & the Germans failed to do so.
Levering the resources of a neo-colonial empire in Africa to win a favorable balance of power in the EU is also not helping for a more integrated Europe. If France had to import uranium for its nuclear power plants from Ukraine and not its neo-colonies in Africa, would they not have been less blind to the legitimate security concerns of Ukraine?
America desperately wishes for a stronger Europe, so that they can focus on the Indo-Pacific. France does not wish for a stronger Europe. France merely wishes to usurp the powers of its neighbors as its own and work out its Napoleon Complex on the global stage. If they wish for a more united, powerful Europe, France should be willing to give up more autonomy and influence. Could you see France being subservient to the democratic interests of countries like Estonia, Slovenia, and Austria in a federalized Europe? Yeah, didn't think so.
I respect the hell out of France. It is the only major military power in the EU that maintained its martial prowess and punches well above its weight. I even agree with Macron about the pension reform. It's just that if you really want a United States of Europe, the most powerful states have to be willing to disproportionately give up their influence and sovereignty. And France shows NO willingness at all to do so.

Democracy works only when each individual makes a rational decision to act in one own best interest. Individual liberty and social responsibility & participation (like obeying laws, paying your dues in time, participating in democratic institutions with desire to work for good and efficiency) are essential components of democracy. Anarchy cannot be democracy as long as the institutions are legitimately democratic. We should appreciate what we human have created presently, after thousands of years of socio-economic evolutions. The present system have faults and need more improvement but the way is participation in the system not the complete rejection of the system.
