Beginners: How To Crochet with Multiple Yarn Strands
Вставка

- Learn how to use more than 1 yarn strand at one time. Some projects require you to double up or use more yarn strands at one time for thickening up a project. You see this commonly used in bags, rugs and more. I've even doubled up strands for afghans to make them heavier and warmer. #crochet #learntocrochet #crochettutorial .

I really appreciate that you showed examples of how you can use multiple yarn strands in a project.
My pleasure.
WHAT?!?! I've been crocheting since I was a teen in the 80s and I've never seen anyone do this! It's beyond cool ❤ thanks so much!
Edit: I'm doing the color transition on a blanket I'm working on and it's so beautiful. I think the recipient will love it.
I've been crocheting off & on for years. This is the best video I've seen for color changing. Thank you, I appreciate all your videos. 👍
Thanks so much.
I agree with the others, this is a very well explained technique. I taught myself how to carry the yarn inside the stitches for what's now called a graphghan a few years ago, but was never sure if I was really doing it properly.
So, you've basically given me your blessing that I'm doing it right! Thanks Mikie!! HUGS
Thank you so much for these tips. I used to tie strands together to do a color change.
Thankyou for doing such a simple but informative video. So many give you so much music, jingles, introductions etc. I just want the information I was looking for and you did it brilliantly. 🏆gold star to you. 😀
I know this video is a little old but thank you for this! I was struggling to figure out how do color changes with two strands like this
I needed this video and didn't even realize it! Thank you so much! these are the best tutorials I have ever seen!
Gosh I’m glad this video appeared in my recommended 🎉❗️💫❗️ Thank you, saving this❣️
Ty Mikey, for this clear & concise video! It was just what I needed to know how to crochet with a double strand of yarn from the same skein. 😊
This was an awesome explanation of this technique! I’m excited to try it. Thanks for the inspiration.
I am gonna have to do this type of project. I love the "watercolor" effect of the yarn. Thanks for another stupendously wonderful tutorial and project.
Thank you so much for going nice and slow, you also have a. Great attitude!
How would you decide what crochet hook size to use for double strand? Play it by the ear or double the hook size recommended for one strand?
I want to know this too!
I don't think it matters. I think any size would wotk
I wonder if you can compare the diameter of the strands you want to use with a single strand of another yarn that matches the diameter and use the hook recommended for the larger single strand yarn, if that makes sense
If you for example use a weight 3 yarn and double it, then the yarn is actually equivalent to a weight 4 so all you have to do is find out what hook matches with a weight 4 yarn
Go a size up. Hook size doesn't necessarily dictate what yarn you use. I used a super chunky on a 12mm hook, came out lovely. Obviously really bulky yarn is harder to work with on a small hook.
Mike u r AMAZING!!! I have learned so much from u. When I try to learn something new u r my go to person. U r truly blessed with a crochet talent. Don’t ever stop teaching. God bless and happy crocheting!!!
Very interesting way to do a new design. Going to have to wait have two projects to finish and send out.
Very cool! I’m just getting into double stranding, and I love the wonderful, things that happen, when I mix colors…or use a constant, with different colors. I also love how squishy my double stranded baby blankets feel. I am planning a special blanket for my grandson and hiss fiancé.. Diuble stranding will be a great technique to use for this very special gift.
Yes... It's a really nice technique for making thicker blankets.
I love your videos and this is no exception. I have two very large bags of leftover yarn from other projects and decided I'd follow this video. Thank you so much Mikey for doing and posting this.
You are simply amazing this is a wonderful video showing how to use 2 strands and color change Thank you
Thank you Mikie, or this tutorial, fantastic tips for crafting multistrands. Blessings to you an Dan.
I saw in a book calling for using 2 strands. After seeing this video ,you make it easy to do it. Thank you, Mikey. 😊
I am love your videos and try to do some of the beautiful work you done. I am learning by your video so please keep them coming as my nice and I watch you together and learn.
I’m so thankful for this video!! I wanted to change one strand only and your video made it so easy! 😊❤
How cool. Can't wait to try this with the color change. And you always make me laugh. I frogged one of these before watching your video and ended up with a HUGE mess. I will make sure I love the next project from the beginning haha
You are just talented,,,if I tried that i would have it wrapped around my head. 🧶💕
HI Mikey I always learn alot from your tutorials like the two color granny square video. I think your crochet stitches have even tension and the stitches are consistent. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and tips which help me as a novice to crochet.
thankyou I love the video I am making an amigurumi octopus and i wanted it pink and gray and now I can!
Love your Vibrant Catherine Wheel afghan
Thanks for the tutorial. Very much needed

Hi Mickey, I’m not new to your videos but I will be using them more often 😊. Your style with the Tunisian knitting looks so much easier than other videos I’ve seen. Thank you so much! Your style is wonderful! 10+ ⭐️⭐️⭐️

This video changed my life! Thank you!
Thanks for your video, I was watching another video on making bedroom slippers and it said to use 2 strands of the same color yarn to crochet with, and me being a newbie, I thought to myself how would I do that? Your video answered that question for me, thank you very much.
Thank you so much for tutorial!! I'm looking forward to creating something beautiful with this technique.
Thanks for the tutorial.
My pleasure.
This is such an awesome idea. Thankyou so much for putting up this video.
Love, love, love!!!! Thanks! Now all my scraps can look fancy with the gradient. Can’t wait to try. How many WIP’s is too many?😂😊
I do it all the time.... love it.♥️
I love this! I am so going to try it on my next multi-color afghan, which may be a Catherine Wheel. Thank you for all you guys do!
Thanks Mikey> Always love learning from you. You explain things so well! :)
How do you work out what hook (or needle size of knitting) to use, if you're using more than one strand of yarn at once?
Do you multiply recommended hook size, for that yarn, by the number of strands of yarn you're using?
Or is there a different formula?
I really needed this video to.
Great technique, thanks so much!!!
I am unable to view this video. Utube says an error message and to try again later. Can you check and see if the video can be adjusted please? I'd love to see it and follow you religiously! You are a fine crocheter and bring much joy to us all. Thanks
It's playing just fine on my end. Maybe it's your device?
Thank you so much - this was a great tutorial.
Great job mikey... I loved it ❤️
Love it
Thank you Mikie
Awesome video!
What size hook do you use? Do you just add the two together?
I'm working on a blanket now I did use two different colors but I only double strand the transition and it is making my project wavy
Check the hook. It's probably too small. or it's way too big. Check the hook.
I'm using a 5.5mm hook most of the blanket I'm use one stand of yarn expect when I transferred to the other color
I love it, thank you!
I used to have a crochet booklet that was called "Crochet on the Double" which was basically the same thing, holding two balls or skeins of yarn together to work. It had a blanket in it where you made a various number of flowers and then you crocheted them together with double yarn. It was a fast project and very pretty but I haven't seen anything like it since. Have you ever seen a booklet like this?
The booklet you are referring to is by "Annie's"... it may be available on Amazon.
Do you have to use a bigger crochet hook when you're using 2 skeins of yarn together? If so, what's the recommended hook to use?
Thank you for this tutorial! Never thought to transition colors this way. Going to make an ocean colored blanket...this will be perfect for transition from white to the gradual teal color.
Wow, love it .. Thank you
Love it
This helped
So cool
this is a really good idea Thank you also love your scissors : )
Great idea!!
What size hook are you using Mikey! I’ve learned so much from your tutorials and have taught others how, too! I always give you credit. Thx for your great instruction!
It's a 6 mm / J/10. Thank you for your trust.
Danggggg u r so clever ❤️
thank u SO nuch
Most welcome
smarty love it!
Fun!
nice .. Thank you
What size of needle were you using?
Awesome!!!
How do you add on new yarn for both strands? Is it same way as changing colors
i LOVE this
Creative!
please make coasters and matching trivets. and how to increase a patterned coaster.
How do you stop the two strands getting tangled up together? I’ve tried to use multiple strands but it gets super difficult when the yarn strands get used up at different rates and they fuzz together. I have untangled my strands so many times and it takes so long.
Thanks for vid
This was oddly satisfying 🥴
Crochet is oddly satisfying for sure.
When in doubt ask Mikey!
Thank you so much for this video. btw what is this yarn called? I would like to get the same one.
I think they usually use Red Heart, so I'd start looking around on their website if I were you :) hope that was helpful
It's Bernat Super Value.
This one is Bernat Super Value :)
I've not seen any tutorials on working with 2 different color yarns alternating between rows. I seem to get them tangled. 😭
How do you keep the two yarns from twisting together? Thank you!!
You want them to twist together but if you don't... then put one ball in front of you. the other behind you... so they come to your hand without being twisted already.
If I’m making a blanket…how much bigger up a size in needle do I go when using two strands of yarn?
Maybe 2 sizes. Just try it and see if you are comfortable.
Is it normal to two strands to twist and twirl? I've spent a lot of time untwist them but now I've realized that that's probably not necessary.
Just let them twist and twirl as that's what creates the marled look that you are wanting.
Frogged a double strand project was a major pain in the bum. LOL
How do you keeo your working yarn from twisting and getting tangled
great video. what size hooks are you using?
6 mm or size J for this tutorial. Use your best judgement for choosing a hook. You cannot use the one recommended on the ball band as it's for 1 strand.
+The Crochet Crowd okay good deal thank you have a great day
Would it be too difficult to let the yarn travel down on the end and pick it up as needed instead of cutting it?
It depends on how soon you plan to pick up the color again. If you are only dropping it for 1 row, then you could do that. But I would say for more than one row, you wouldn't want to carry it that far. The rows are pretty tall.
What is the brand of yarn you used?
Bernat Super Value
I’m confused about the difference between single crochet and slip stitches. These look like slip stitches to me 🤷🏾♀️
