  • A review of the NIO ET5, the Chinese brand that has got the Germans worried.
    ********
    We have waited a long time to get a NIO on the channel, and finally we have one in the shape of the incredibly sexy NIO ET5. Similar in size and style to a Tesla Model 3, the ET5 boasts sharper looks, a more luxurious interior, and battery-swapping ability, but it also boasts a sizeable premium price tag too, and is sold along the traditional European lines of adding lots of optional extras. But with a brutal price war on EVs in China, the ET5 is going to have to go some to justify itself against very impressive competition. Does it deliver a performance to challenge the experienced Germans? We found out.

    What a beautiful car, NIO is a brand setting the standard. Battery Swap is the way to go, more brands need to adopt this.

    • @grahamjohnson4702
      @grahamjohnson4702 7 місяців тому +4

      Battery swap is not the way to go unless all makers come together to have the same method, it' s bad enough now with all the different electric companies having different prices and different apps and top ups are only necessary when you go on long distance not when you charge at home mostly, so a big no no to battery swap.

    • @InsideChinaAuto
      @InsideChinaAuto  7 місяців тому +1

      I'm not sure battery swap will catch on in all honesty, simply because charging is getting so fast now and it's so much easier to standardise a socket than an entire chassis. Might end up just being a unique thing to NIO but it sure is pricey.

      As for whether many of these brands will come to Australia, yes, I believe they will. NIO and XPeng are both going to the UK, a RHD market like yours, which will open up the possibility of Australia in future, and I'm pretty sure others will be on their way since MG and BYD are there already. How does it compare to its main rival the IM L7?

    • @InsideChinaAuto
      @InsideChinaAuto  7 місяців тому

      I'm not sure the L7 is the rival to this. L7 is more an ET7 rival, but may be similarly priced to this. L7 is definitely more spacious and feels like a bigger car, though I haven't sat in one for 18 months. Looks more dramatic too in my opinion, which I like. Comes with the huge dash-width screen too which is really a taste thing. Not as tall if you want to watch videos but more real estate in general. I didn't get to really throw the L7 around so can't really judge the handling either, but for sure the rear suspension was better than this. Hard to compare after so much time between them.

    Interesting and beautiful car, but... As someone has said, building quality doesn't feel like premium, and some design choices seem quite odd, to say the least. Whom the heck would to put the tablet far lower than the drivers control panel LED screen?... Again. I'm not implying this as a bad car. It isn't, but there is a far big progress margin for them to compete. There are some plastics that are more akin to the B segment than otherwise. Even the Citroen E-C3 feels like made of some better materials.
    Again: My humble and honest opinion? Here in Europe very few of those Chinese EV makers will survive: Geely/Volvo, BYD, GWM and XPeng (now somewhat under the VW "umbrella") seem to be the best positioned to do so. The others may to come in, if they partner with Euro legacies like XPeng seems to have done. NIO seems out of that league...

    • @kamsunleong6648
      @kamsunleong6648 7 місяців тому +1

      But here in Asean especially Thailand, Chinese evs are totally dominating. Top 5 spots are theirs and then Tesla. BYD and MG are already taking sizable share in Australia and NZ. BYD is building a plant here to service the right hand drive market. As late as end of last year I don't see a single Chinese ev on the road. Today they are everywhere.

    • @InsideChinaAuto
      @InsideChinaAuto  7 місяців тому

      It's a very lovely car, and I don't really agree about the materials, they're very good on the whole, but they don't expand the soft touch stuff to the lower surfaces like the door pockets, which Li Auto do, but I don't think they're any less than a Benz or Audi in that respect. Modern Audis in particular are very plasticky.
      As for the others, I don't think you can compare Volvo, they're a brand with European HQ and a century of heritage. You might consider Zeekr, and they should be alright. BYD will do fine as they come in at the lower end so don't suffer the same questions over whether Chinese brands can do premium yet. XPeng are solid but will take some brand building time being semi-premium, but be under no illusions, they're not 'under' VW, VW went begging to XPeng to save themselves and are getting XPeng's already superceded platform for a pair of cars in 3 years.
      NIO offering very expensive cars will definitely take the longest to settle in Europe in my opinion, but they need to sort their business at home first before investor appetite cools.

    Thanks for the work in this review.
    I think, German automakers are on the brink of bankruptcy already. They were to arrogant and lazy, and way to late to the EV party.
    They laughed at Tesla, and after that, laughed at the Chinese car industry. And now, they can only build way to expansive and outdated EV's.
    On top of that, the unions block every progress and innovation. Not visioning that they will bring down the EU car industry and no one will have a job by that time.
    The only market where VW, BMW, Audi and Mercedes still made a small profit . . . . . was China. And that will stop to with cars like this.

    • @InsideChinaAuto
      @InsideChinaAuto  7 місяців тому +2

      The next ten years could see a massive shift. I'm reluctant to be too dramatic, organisations do have the ability to change if they really need to, but the Chinese are unencumbered to change faster. Unions really have the ability to hamstring a car brand, and the mindset of the people does too, Germany being a huge case in point. Resistance to change is a very real thing but in China change is embraced because it's all they've ever known and they know how to work hard.
