Who's watching this in Christmas 2023? 😊 This episode by Rick Steves has become a tradition for me to watch every Christmas season!! The hauntingly beautiful and emotionally moving rendition of Silent Night at the end of this episode gets me every time!! Absolutely love it!!!
How terriblty sad it is that so many people think that Christmas is one long secular party, lasting all of December until Christmas Day and then it's gone. This video helps to reinforce the real, meaning of Christmas and shows the wonder of what they're missing. Thank you, Rick Steves.
I totally agree. My in-laws celebrate a totally secular Christmas every year and I always find that sad and distressing. If my wife and son didn't accompany me to celebrate Christmas Mass ( preferably at midnight but sometimes we have to go to the 9:00 service) then I don't think I would have the spirit to celebrate the holiday at all. It isn't Christmas without Jesus whether you're Protestant or Catholic and noone will ever convince me otherwise. Merry Christmas everyone!!! DEUS VOLT!!

hindus and pagan europeans shared the same gods because we are cousins linguistically and genetically especially if your North Indian though your ancestors mixes with the dravidian Indians. in cold Europe we cherished the seasons because of short summers and long winters so winter solstice was the biggest festival all year. when chrisiantiy arrived we mixed our culture with chrisiantiy brining the tree with us and decoration and gift giving creating the modern western Christmas you know today.

Anyway we've been watching this every year for the past decade and I always try to listen to his awesome radio show on Sunday evening ( at least that's when it comes on at my local NPR channel) . October 2004, my wife and I visited Gimmelwald, 45:41 in this episode, after watching and being inspired by an earlier Rick Steves' travelogue episode from there. The village and surrounding mountain vistas were wonderful. We experienced an overnight light snowfall and Gimmelwald and nearby Murren looked like they were from a "snow globe". The saying (or motto) for the village is: "If Heaven isn't what it's cracked up to be, send me back to Gimmelwald."

Seeing this, it makes Christmas here in the USA seem so consumer-driven, bordering on vapid. Christmas just appears so sweet and innocent in Europe.

This is very nice but as for Steves' activism, there are a lot of things wrong with supporting the communist antics of the Democratic Party nowadays which undermines the very things he touts and experiences in Europe that he shines a spotlight on. They are against capitalism, any traditional belief system which in any way encourages morality or individualism and that includes Christianity, and they strongly urge their unpopular 'woke' yet failed policies on the rest of America whether you agree or not.

What a great video
This is very nice but as for Steves' activism, there are a lot of things wrong with supporting the communist antics of the Democratic Party nowadays which undermines the very things he touts and experiences in Europe that he shines a spotlight on. They are against capitalism, any traditional belief system which in any way encourages morality or individualism and that includes Christianity, and they strongly urge their unpopular 'woke' yet failed policies on the rest of America whether you agree or not.
I have watched this for nearly 15 years yet the feelings of joy are still present it was done elegantly.
Thanks Rick Steves! We need you more than ever right now to take us away to a better place!

Watching this has become my Christmas tradition - a wholesome video of Christmas celebrations. Thank you very much Rick for putting this for us. Rick, can you please make a similar documentary, but covering non-European areas, I think it would be wonderful video to see how other parts of the world celebrate Christmas! Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Same with us! It is so lovely to see. Merry Christmas to you!
@@Rdwrer Merry Christmas to you my friend!
This has to be one of my favourite videos to watch every Christmas season. Thank you, Rick!
Watching this November 30, 2024 after my town's Christmas event in Lancaster County, PA USA farm country. With the Lutheran church bell choir, the Presbyterian and Methodist churches open houses, area businesses, the historical society showcasing the town's history, and a crafters showcasing their talents.
To everyone, don't feel pressured to spend money at all the retail places. Enjoy the community events with lights, even the lights in your neighborhood!
God Bless!
This made me cry in joy

Me as well. My hometown is Nurnberg!

I love Christmas from different traditions.
If I had to describe this one episode in a single word it would be “beloved”!
I think I started crying like 6 times for happiness watching this lol. Wonderful piece
I can't travel physically because we're not rich, so I really appreciate this video seing how the other countries celebrates Christmas 🎄😊 Merry Christmas 🇵🇭 i hope i can travel someday and feel the traditions :)
My situation is the same. I don't think there aren't many places that I would not want to travel to, although I would think that Europe (esp. France, Germany, and Portugal) would be my favorite among all places.
But - Zero $$ to travel with - I hear you!
Wishing Us All the Best that we Do have, through 2023.
I will never stop loving this special!
