I found that standing on top of your ship when you land on the water is way better than fishing off the exo skiff. The exo skiff moves with the waves, and sometimes you get pushed off into the water. That never happens on your ship. Also, all the stuff sticking up off the exo skiff gets in the way. You can really only cast off the back of it. You can cast in any direction from your ship.

Yet despite the new Exo-Skiff being supposedly a "Stable" fishing platform, I often get tossed off it in deep waters where the waves can run small pointy hills high, and thus cause the Exo-Skiff to flop and bounce about like, well, a fish, and eventually you will fall off it. Seriously Sean, can we please get some seatbelts on that thing? Also, maybe the ability to actually sit down while fishing, maybe even in a nice easy chair?
I've been having so much fun with this. I built an over-water base that has a deep side and a shallow side and I can fish from the deck. Great tips of the various foodstuff bait.
I was already building a cliff side house over a sea, when this update dropped. Now it's getting a marina makeover! I have a flourishing planet with a very beautiful palette- the seas turn translucent as glass at dawn, then morph into brilliant flame orange in daytime. At night, plant life glows, even some underwater. It's my first really good planet, so I want to keep it private for a while. Still, it's too gorgeous not to share... eventually.
I’m pausing In the middle here to make note of a few things. So first off: you can drop a base computer and refiners and such on the skiff. You can also do catch and release with fish to make the fastest and most productive nanite farm available, the caveat there being the higher rarity the more nanite. Also there will likely be upgrades available for the skiff eventually due to the fact it has 60 cold storage slots in the expedition, and only 10 in the main game
So - the ability to place those things on the skiff - it's not new. I think you can put a base computer anywhere using free-placement. The skiff just gives you a surface to use when at sea. Once you have a base, sure - you can build anything you like, but if you move the skiff - the stuff will stay back where you built them. Regarding the farming of Nanites - it's a wonderful advice! Thank you. I am sure Xaine will produce a video with detailed statistics, which I do not have the time to do myself. About upgrades to the skiff - I think you're on to something! Let's hope it's quickly.
ive had this game sitting in my steam library for years. but about a week ago i randomly saw that there was gonna be a fishing update, an i love games with fishing. so i started my first playthrough a few days ago and now im completly addicted and i can not stop playing this game. and your videos have been a great help for me thank you so much.
Just use salt for everything lure wise...I only changed lure once to get the storm fishes. Can't remember what that lure is called, but you will need to use this lure most probably...mechanical I think it was called. Or charged. But yeah....salt is a superb lure, and plentiful. 👌
Just finished the expedition and yeah, the skiff is only good on as extra storage while your fishing. Kind of like a floating tackle box/cooler. Better that than eating up precious storage anywhere else.
I think fishing rig is the correct term because if I’m not mistaken, professional fisherman refer to their entire rod and reel system as a rig, where as a fishing rod only refers to the pole and a fishing reel is the spool of line and the lever to reel it back in and the hook and lure is what’s on the end of the line put it all together. I think it’s referred to as a rig.
It's a rig because it also includes float/bob. Size has less merit. Rarity type increases the value sold or the nanites given if the fish is released. There is also currently merit to using no bait or simple baits because the module enhancers that can be fished up seem to have a higher frequency with no bait vs top bait.
Yeah - that's what happens when someone (ahem) who has no idea about fishing, let alone the English terminology, tries to do a video about fishing. The result makes you go "something's fishy about this guy...", no?
@@goodguysfree I just simply explained. Also, even some folks who are native speakers of English may not know such if they're not into or experienced with fishing either of course. Basically, you're floundering with all that.
It would be great if we could deploy more than 3 fishing traps on a single planet. I know it would sound like a nightmare to collect from a few dozen of them if they all look the same, so an option to recolor them or something would be useful.
I agree - these things are screaming for updates - like recoloring, like a clear indication whether there's fish in the traps, like more traps, like abiity to harvest several at once (like plants in a biodome), and how about the ability to install specific bait in the traps?
Some useful info and a helpful spreadsheet. FYI: You can save a little cooking time on making Delicious Vegetable Stew by using the Non-Toxic Mushroom + Non-Toxic Mushroom recipe for the Fibrous Stew step instead of Steamed Vegetables + Non-Toxic Mushrooms so you only need to cook half of the mushrooms to vegetables instead of 3/4.
I mean I've been on and off with the game for a hot minuet. Wasn't expecting fishing, but its given a new activity for me to do when I dont want to explore. Sink some beers from a skiff with the boys as a storm rolls by before drunkenly flying back to the space station to sell our haul and pass out in the ship customisation port. Pointless but fun with the right company.
Just speculation/headcanons here: I think IRL there are capsules you can use to hold bait that won't fit on a hook--they have little holes in them that slowly leak whatever substance into the water to let the fish smell them. So I like to imagine that's what's happening when you're using liquid or fine ground baits in the game. I think maybe the choice to implement fishing was kind of a lucky coincidence of timing for HG. Like you said, I bet they were getting the mechanic ready for LNF. But I had seen fanart floating around (pun intended) of travelers fishing off of their ships for a while beforehand--and this only intensified once they let ships land directly on water. So once HG saw there was a demand for it, and they had the tech sitting around, why not just put it in? I was surprised when they put this update out, and I've had a bad experience or two with fishing in other games. But their version is pretty low stress, and I'm sure it's not intended to replace or postpone any plans for bigger updates, so I'm fine with it. (Also one of the characters I use is supposed to inspired by Subnautica and I'm glad I can finally put some flippers on his feet.)
I went on a hunt for large fauna and proto-geks. 3 hours later, I finally had what i needed! So to save anyone the trouble, Most Curious Cake Rare = 30% Size = 51% Notes = N/A Units = 79,700 Cronus = 129 nanites

Deploy the skiff on land, and do not use it other than to store stuff 😂 if you put it on the water it is highly unstable in bad weather, even though it hovers above the water 😅
I'm guessing it matters to your list of records, but probably nothing else. Or could be interesting if you get more units when selling a larger fish than a smaller one of the same type...
@@goodguysfree i just used it on my S class multitool and i think i did pretty well for a first try from shore. i'm on PC for this and used the D & A keys to tug the line after the cast. what i'd do is D twice, wait a couple of seconds then A twice. i caught 4 C class, 8-10 B class, and 2 A class. bait was just meal worms.
DM me on Discord or X and I'll try to get you the ship. Not trivial as it requires me to duplicate it somehow but I can do that for you. My friend codes are in the channel description, BTW.
True. Also through glass windows... And if you're not very deep in the water, you can also fish from underwater... Just point the rig upwards to the surface... One of HG devs mentioned this on X and asked if they should fix this. They might...
I love the fishing idea but the mechanic behind is to simple and I hate that they dropped the optical drill to get space for the fishing rig at Eos, maybe a bug?
The term "rig" is common in various forms for all sorts of things nautical and fishing. Ever wonder what those REALLY tall and very thin poles on larger boats are? Those are outriggers; they fold out to the left and right, holding a lure, or bait, as far out of the wake as possible, while trolling.* Just about anything using a line of some sort can be referred to as rig, or tackle, as in block and tackle. *seriously. It's the daddy of the internet term "troll", which, amusingly, also worked as an insult as a short ugly creature that lived under bridges.😅
Yeah i guess the fishing is a sweet nice afk nanite farm with the automatic reus... even if you only can place 3 per planet. And else i quess NMS is now their "test server" for LNF stuff... but hey why not^^ now what would be cool is an aquarium to put in our fishs and present them^^
The cold storage is showing 60 spots when in the expedition, and only 10 open spots when outside of the expedition. We don't know (yet) if this is a bug, or intentional. It has been reported as a bug to Hello Games' Zendesk, but we suspect it may be intentional - a clue hinting that we will have to upgrade the skiff later. Probably in a later update.
Well, first - welcome back. The seas can get pretty rough. Enough that the exo-skiff will throw you off - at least until the next patch update which we hope will reduce this to a sane level. Right now most players simply use the Aque Jets tech on their ships to land on the water and fish from on top of the ship - it's totally stable... LOL
Does size even matter for anything else than personal records? It doesn't seem to affect the value of your catch. Especially not when you're going to cook it anyway. As far as lures go if you don't need something specific, just use salt. ps.: I'm sad that I can't fish in a moonpool.
Yeah, I really wished they'd make the size change the value. If you find me on X, I replied to Griff from HG that they should fix the thing that lets us fish when underwater, but let us fish in a moonpool. Fingers crossed...
Why do everyone skip the trap you can buy in the technology module? I have seen a few of these video show up and I have not seen a single one mention the trap.
Heheh - maybe it's because they all made their videos before reaching the point in the expedition where you need to deploy the traps? Me? Guilty as charge.
Thanks. This has already been submitted by another, and yes - 33% rarity increase and 66% size increase. It's now at the top of the Google sheet. Thanks for commenting!
.Yeah. Wasn't really interested in fishing but it's a nice leisurely expedition, hate fishing in real life but I found myself fishing in NMS for more than 12hrs in two days, wth.
What is broken right now as of the date typing this... all bait is useless... a blank line has the SAME chance to catch Colossal fish as any other bait... why is a 72% having same luck as a 2%? because its broken! The only thing landing legendary fish was the Bionic Lure because HG tells you to use it... I tried everything and the numbers say nothing matters chief... its all smoke and numbers... that mean nothing... This Expedition is a HUGE upset and I say that as someone that enjoyed all past expeditions, but this was one update that had HUGE Potential to keep players playing... make a separate wonder projector to display the fish we get... (it would have me fishing more!) or make a Bio Reactor for fish to power the base... have me casting a line to save myself from making a lot of ugly solar panels, or searching for a power hotspot... But nope we get to catch fish to sell or cook and most veteran players need neither food in a game where you basically eat Oxygen or Money when its so easy to come by... I have basically Zero incentive to EVER fish again.... Fishing was fun for all of 5 mins... as the fish cant escape or break the line... its boring not engaging once you do it five times you've seen and done the minigame.... they make you do it SOOOO much too I was just begging for it to end... I've NEVER felt this way on any expedition before.... Thank you HG for the content but it could have been Legendary.... instead of just a little Meh...
I hear you Traveler. And you raise some interesting ideas for how HG could have made things much more interesting and fun. This makes me want to create a video with the various suggestions I've seen. If I do, may I use your ideas from this comment? How would you like me to credit you if I did? Please contact me on Discord / X (DM) - I'd really like to discuss this with you.
Sorry you feel that way - check out the description and find the link to the Google sheet with the stats! And BTW, Hello Games kind of nerfed this video - they changed the displayed numbers such that Bionic Lure in the experimental branch now shows 94% rarity increase...

It's good advice, mentioned by others as well - I will make sure it's added to the pinned comment. Thanks.!
Anyone else have trouble placing the exo skiff in vr? I can point to the water and it's green wherever I point but it doesn't appear when I press R2
Deploy the skiff on land, and do not use it other than to store stuff 😂 if you put it on the water it is highly unstable in bad weather, even though it hovers above the water 😅
But how do you deploy it on land? Haven't had time to try to do this...
@@goodguysfree is easy can put It anywhere on the shoreline, as long as a bit of its on water
Ah, I thought you found some glitch or trick to place it squarely on land. Alright. Thanks!
I use the Nutrient Processor for the extra storage!
@shallendor Your can actually deploy a nutrient processor *on* the exo-skiff! It floats a little above the deck, but it works.
why is it that in the expedition i have 60 slots open for the cold storage, but every video i've seen outside the expedition only has 10?
bug we have reported to hg's zendesk
That's excellent! I saw this when I was reviewing the video before releasing it, and wasn't sure I saw correctly. Nice catch!
@@NeonAtari let's hope the bug is 10, and not 60...
There's hope... After all The text says "the exo skiff also features abundant cold storage"
@@LoganWolf Yes its intended to be 60
re: using eggs as bait, just think of them as fish eggs or something like that and not bird eggs :) We actually fish using eggs to catch Trout
Mix 3 cooked fish together in a processor. "Seas bounty" is crazy good. Can be made into something else too 😉
Does size matter in any way? Bionic lure still seems the best if you want to catch them all
lol what’s up dude
I'm guessing it matters to your list of records, but probably nothing else. Or could be interesting if you get more units when selling a larger fish than a smaller one of the same type...
@@BIGPOPPA2098 Hi there !
@@goodguysfree Yes I wonder if larger fish are more valuable. I guess when I have them all I'll want bigger ones
I am sure I answered this comment before... Seems like size doesn't matter for value :-(
when you get the rig, does it matter what multi-tool you put it on? like if you have a c-class vs an s-class.
We don't know yet.
Interesting... Can you experiment on your catch rate with different multitools? That would be very interesting information for everyone.
Good work, man! Very good work

Note: Attracts day fish
However, cooking this one takes a lot of effort... LOL
whered you find that ship????
Hehehe, which ship?
@@goodguysfree the sentinel with the folding wings, its wicked and I want it lol
DM me on Discord or X and I'll try to get you the ship. Not trivial as it requires me to duplicate it somehow but I can do that for you. My friend codes are in the channel description, BTW.

PRO TIP: You can fish through the floor of your base if it is built on water.
Indeed it looks like a bug. Need to check.
Great overview of bait!
Horrific mush is brilliant
The term "rig" is common in various forms for all sorts of things nautical and fishing. Ever wonder what those REALLY tall and very thin poles on larger boats are? Those are outriggers; they fold out to the left and right, holding a lure, or bait, as far out of the wake as possible, while trolling.*
Just about anything using a line of some sort can be referred to as rig, or tackle, as in block and tackle.
*seriously. It's the daddy of the internet term "troll", which, amusingly, also worked as an insult as a short ugly creature that lived under bridges.😅
What annoys the hell out me is that it seems to be no way to sell the fish directly from your cold storage box 😤
Yep. It's a similar thing with storage containers, or the ingredient storage of the Nutrient Processor. So, there's some precedent...
Yeah i guess the fishing is a sweet nice afk nanite farm with the automatic reus... even if you only can place 3 per planet. And else i quess NMS is now their "test server" for LNF stuff... but hey why not^^ now what would be cool is an aquarium to put in our fishs and present them^^
So many people are saying this about the aquarium...
@ggfnmsvids well yeah fishing and aquarium or a display kinda stick together in my opinion 🤣
How come you only show 10 spots in your cold storage? Mine was maxed out
The cold storage is showing 60 spots when in the expedition, and only 10 open spots when outside of the expedition. We don't know (yet) if this is a bug, or intentional. It has been reported as a bug to Hello Games' Zendesk, but we suspect it may be intentional - a clue hinting that we will have to upgrade the skiff later. Probably in a later update.
I used a class A fish as bait and caught an S class
Cheese and flesh stew. Check that out as bait.
Can you please supply the stats / notes for this one? Or DM me a screenshot on Discord? Otherwise it will take me some time to cook and check this...
Just fish from the back of your ship with water landing
Finally i can feed nipnip buds to animals
LOL 😅
I haven't played in years. How rough can the seas get?
Well, first - welcome back. The seas can get pretty rough. Enough that the exo-skiff will throw you off - at least until the next patch update which we hope will reduce this to a sane level. Right now most players simply use the Aque Jets tech on their ships to land on the water and fish from on top of the ship - it's totally stable... LOL
This is not on the G.O.G version?
I'm not sure what you're asking. Pretty sure the update is everywhere by now.
Lol a fishing rod is called a rig 😆
Does size even matter for anything else than personal records?
It doesn't seem to affect the value of your catch. Especially not when you're going to cook it anyway.
As far as lures go if you don't need something specific, just use salt.
ps.: I'm sad that I can't fish in a moonpool.
Yeah, I really wished they'd make the size change the value. If you find me on X, I replied to Griff from HG that they should fix the thing that lets us fish when underwater, but let us fish in a moonpool.
Fingers crossed...
I use fish as fish bait
Why do everyone skip the trap you can buy in the technology module? I have seen a few of these video show up and I have not seen a single one mention the trap.
Fish caught in the trap don't count toward your "landed fish" quota for the expedition.
Heheh - maybe it's because they all made their videos before reaching the point in the expedition where you need to deploy the traps? Me? Guilty as charge.
abyssal stew, sweet root + hypnotic eye i believe it was 64%\33%
Did you try to use fish as bait to see what you get?
We did, they are not that wonderful.
Useful, subbed.
Must...
... have...
... spear-gun!
If it helps your immersion, reptiles have softer eggs. That's how I like to think of it 😊
Yes they do, and it does. Still, using milk as lure is still a bit ridiculous, no?
Cook the fish and use them as bait. You’ll be surprised.
Adding to pinned comment. Thanks!
“More rare” not “rarer”
I realized it as I was saying it, but I just had to. Sorry... LOL
A lot of things were said but what was supposed by the title. The only better lure that i found here was your click bait.
Sorry you feel that way - check out the description and find the link to the Google sheet with the stats!
And BTW, Hello Games kind of nerfed this video - they changed the displayed numbers such that Bionic Lure in the experimental branch now shows 94% rarity increase...
Great video.

I liked the way this video worked out. If you can't be asked to watch a video of this length to get a question answered, I get the feeling that you should simply get off the internet and find it out yourself.
