To mee you are the first to say expensive is the opposite of vulgar and not of cheap. So what we concider expesive reflects our set of mind, not our purse. Having this in mind it is easier to make descisions.
Being a fiber artist and seamstress also helps me in my overall look since I can make clothing for myself that fits my body while giving the look I want. The back "pinch" is called darting, a way to create a more fitted look. So my tip is to layer textures: Wool coats have a woven suiting fabric that is structured and feel very stiff and dense (replacing a lining is also a fun way to add in some of your own personal tastes). Softer and more lofty fabrics such as cashmere and angora are great near the skin and more air = more warmth. A softened linen (has gone though many washes) or cotton under garment works to wick moisture and help with air circulation so this is great right on the skin. Silk is a protein and will also keep you warm, so is great near the skin or part of a layered look. My favorite silk fabric for cooler weather is silk noil (made with short fibers not long). It looks and acts like cotton or hemp but helps hold heat better.
I really love your little illustration showing the lines of the outfits (you did this in previous videos, too). I never thought about "more structure" = more expensive looking. But when I compare how I feel in a tailored coat versus a handknitted woolen cape (I love both!), it makes so much sense.
For the first point: when I was 16 I bought a long black wool coat at H&M on Boxing Day. (December 26 here in Canada is often spent shopping for good deals; stores take that day to clear out old inventory). It was from a previous year's collection and it was the last one in stock -- I got it 80% off. I'm 30 now and it's still my go-to winter coat. The wool has moulded to my body shape and I still get compliments on it! I just change the buttons every few years to keep it in style. And I might have a tailor replace the cheap lining with something more warm and durable.
I was lucky enough to inherit my grandmother’s cashmere camel coat she bought from Max Mara in the 1980s. It is a classic shape so I can continue to wear it for ever! ❤
@@americafirst9144 it really is an incredible coat - looks like new despite being nearly 40 years old and the cashmere is so soft and luxurious. I always get compliments when I wear it!
NEVER part with it! I have my great-aunt's cashmere swing coat from the 1950s that she actually designed! Like you said, it's a classic shape, and even when I gain weight, it never fails me! We are two lucky gals!
I have to add a comment here... There are lovely options of very good quality clothes on second hand market, so you don't have to spend so much money on good quality clothes... It's worth buying, but there are other ways... And its better for the planet!!
Agreed, 20-30 years ago you didn't have the kind of second-hand stores that you have now, these days you have a lot of high-brand second-hand clothing stores. I bought a lot of expensive clothing there over the years: Jimmy Choo bags, expensive suede boots, lots and lots of coats. They are as expensive as the new clothes from a cheap store, but often last much longer because the quality is often still extremely good! I always look up stores like these because they're interesting to shop in, you never know what you get since the contents switch up so often. But there are also a lot of fake stores that just say "vintage" and don't sell anything from the expensive brands.
Totally agree, especially for classic organic fabric pieces. I’ve found many pure cotton, silk, linen and cashmere pieces at way cheaper prices than buying full price. One day I found 4 cashmere sweaters for under $10 each at a thrift store. Any one of them would have been easily close to $100 at a department store.
Yes! I found a 100% Italian leather cognac colored leather jacket for $32 at a thrift shop. I also found a hardly used YSL purse retailing at $2800 for $60.
I'm a newcomer to your channel, but I'm completely in love with how you explain everything, it's making me change the way I shop for clothes and the way I dress. thank you for the great advice!
I would love to see you feature some videos for men (or even have a male friend on as a guest to offer similar concepts). Such beautiful, refined style.
I would also love to see this! I choose and buy all the clothes for my husband (he has said that I can do it if I want, but no pressure) so I'd love for us to both look classy and elegant!
Great video! I love how you compare examples of the clothing and fabrics, and even give pricing, and what to look for. :) Also, great touch - and so important - talking about posture!
This video is perfection! Especially the statement, "looking expensive is the opposite of looking vulgar." So many people seem to think they need big labels on everything as if they must PROVE to everyone that they are classy or special because they spent $$$ on a certain bag... (Or did they? Nowadays, I think most people assume it's a knock-off.) Can I spend it on a certain bag? Yes, but I can also just buy a quiet beautiful unique Italian oxblood leather and be happy with it. I really appreciated all the information in this video. It is everything! Merci beaucoup!
Yes please, i live in Switzerland and we have a lottttt of snow and i would like to have recommendations specially for real warm, not slippery shoes. Thank you🥰
How much I enjoy your videos! The tips for choosing garments, dressing well and looking good is very inspirational. I alwsys aspire to present myself well even on casual days. I see so many women not bothering with themselves and I don't understand why. Hopefully many more women will find inspiration after watching your videos! Thank you. 💐
Thanks so much! Exactly what I needed for my upcoming Paris trip (in winter though 😂) . Would love to see you make a content about Little Black Dress or dinner/cocktail outfits, too!
This is an awesome video. Full disclosure, I've gone back through and watched all of your videos with tips on styling and looking classy, and you hit the nail on the head every time! I was wondering if you might be able to do a video on how to look classy in dresses - I've noticed most of your tips are based around pants, and that is wonderful 98% of the time, but sometimes I want to look classy and put together in a dress! What styles are best? How do you accessorize them without going overboard? What about proportions? I'd also love to see a video about how to look classy and elegant in the wintertime when it's cold. I get cold very easily, so any tips to not look like a stuffed marshmallow (not cute) would be appreciated! Thank you! Love your videos!
I "invested" in a CK coat over ten years ago on sale, of course, and it still looks great. I once had a forest green cashmere coat in the 1970s made in an atelier in Seoul but gave it to my friend when I left South Korea. Still find of kicking myself for that. 😅
I love your videos! Your approach to classic style and rules are so different than anything I have seen. I love it! Im learning to spot the difference between shiny plastic fibers and matte natural. Such an observation I’ve never been taught! Also I love love the fact that you are promoting quality, natural fibers and more minimalism in style. Can’t wait for your next video!
Don’t sleep on vintage wool coats either. You can get really nice quality vintage pieces for a fraction if you’re patient and don’t mind hunting around a bit.
Oh how happy I am to have come across this channel! I was surprised to see that you started posting videos only recently and I must admit that for one, brief moment I thought: "what can she say that hasn't been said already?". I was so wrong! Awesome channel, great insights. Such a pleasure to "absorb" your videos! 😊
i love your videos & advice ! I prefer you examples and ideas with your own outfits rather than the pinterest photos because your shots all have the same background and that enhances the outfit in my opinion. ❤
I love your videos! Would love to see one about dressing elegant in Summer and one about special occasions (e.g., weddings...) if you accept suggestions :)
I agree wholeheartedly with your love of wool. However, it’s usually just too itch-producing for me… except merino wool, usually. I do like a cotton sweater, but it doesn’t have the richness of wool. Lately, I’ve bought sweaters made of cotton and modal (natural) with a bit of polyester or acrylic or even wool thrown in. Very comfy, but not as long-lived as wool. I find that wool coats need to be at least 70% wool to be good quality. I have to wear a scarf to protect against itchiness, though. Regarding “earthy” tones. All one has to do is look at “seasonal” colour charts and find the earthy shades that complement one’s colouring. No biggie. Although this could be a good topic for a future video? Thank you very much for your wonderful videos!
I have the same problem with itchiness, my skin is quite sensitive and I can't stand an itchy garment. I also like natural fibers, so shopping for a coat is a pain because of my limited budget
About jewelry: gold-plated silver is quite affordable and the effect is much better than costume jewelry. It also lasts longer and if the gold fades you have a silver jewelry, which is not bad.
I always love the non-clothing additions, like posture or make up. I am curious about your opinion on the use of vulgarities when trying to look expensive.
NO ANGORA PLEASE! It's a very cruel trade that cause immense pain to rabbits. Please please do not promote it in your videos. Angora is also very itchy to most people.
I would love a video that just includes your favorite shops. And… when are “sale times?” Other than Black Friday, do stores generally have sales at the same time? Genuinely puzzled here.
In Europe, and especially in countries like France or Belgium (where I live) big sales can only happen twice per year. The periods are announced in media, and there are always news pieces talking about 'how sales are going this year' :D. Then you have some smaller sales here and there, but I believe that there are certain regulations that limit when and how much discounts a shop can give. It is silly in my opinion, mais voilà, c'est comme ça madame! (as the francophones like to say)
I like your "expensive" video full of good advices (Bag made with apple !). You wear a lot of pants : what's about skirts or dresses ? And what's about "expensive" short hair ? Thank you very much.
J’adore tes vidéos, particulièrement celles où tu donnes des conseils sur l’élégance. J’ai une question, est-ce que montrer ses orteils (donc porter des chaussures à talons ouvertes) est un faux pas à l’élégance ?
Hello. Can you please go over how you take care of your cashmere sweaters? I buy every season in the USA and it doesn’t last long, 2 seasons max. For a record it is 100% cashmere, not cheap at all. Thank you!
I use my own shampoo or shower gel for wool and silk. If it works for my human hair, it wil work for other animal hair... And i wash them by hand. wool does not like much friction so i just solve the shampoo in warm water, soak the sweater, let it sit there for a couple of hours, or over nihgt. then do some handwash and rinse with clean water until it gehts clean. Basically i treat my wool cloths like my hair...
I’m 72 and love your videos and excellent advice. My father was a European trained tailor . Growing up I always had “bespoke “ clothes that were tailored for my body . I hated it 🤣🤣as wanted what others my age were wearing . Now looking back at photos I can see how well my clothes hung on me . Through helping him in his shop I gained so much knowledge on how clothes should fit and how to shop for quality vs “trendy “. I miss him and I sure he would be shocked on what the Walmarts of the world offer. My husband also benefited from my fathers talent and had several custom made suits . It is now a dying art .
I wash my cashmere in the washing machine at 20°C. I put the spin at 400, and I put the sweaters inside-out and also inside of a laundry net. Then I never use softener as well. Then I let it dry flat on the drying rack (not hanging) 😊♥️
I wash my wool sweaters or cardigans by hand. As most of my winter wool clothes are quite chunky and heavy, it would take ages to dry or it would be damaged a lot sooner if spin it in washing machine. So to remove as much water from it as possible I do the towel trick. Put the thickest towel on the ground, lay gently squezed but still very wet sweater on top of it nicely and roll towel with the garment together, then just press this roll so the towel absorbs most of the water. I think it helps a lot.
I found the coat suggestions to be most helpful, Thank you. I appreciate your suggestions for vegan leather bags. I have a simple cork tote, made in Portugal, bought on my last trip to Europe. Thoughts on using that as my handbag? Also I have a vintage (late 60s) cream Austrian made wool cape (handed down from my mother), can I use that as my coat? or should I use for special occasions only? Thank you so much for your beautiful videos, I always find them so informative.
Unfortunately I bought a beautiful wool coat and found out that I am extremely allergic to wool. I was able to gift it to someone who really wanted it but I’m always looking for a good quality coat that is not wool. Any recommendations for that would be much appreciated.
I always enjoy your videos although I'm not a "classy" type but still can learn something also what can one do when we don't have a winter at all for nice coats in Cyprus 😊😜
Great video! I loved your 'girl math' lol BUT IT'S SO TRUE! I want to buy quality pieces that look great and will last years. Thank you for your great tips!!
my concern in fall and winter is that I need to wear layered clothes, yet it is so bulky when I have 1 or 2 cardigans under my coat. what to do? I feel cold more often that other people.
Hello Adriane, thank you for your videos. I apriciate them very much. Would like to make a video about Black Tie Dresscode for women? It would be very helpful. Our christmas event dictates this this year. Greetings from germany.
Wow when we were taught as kids walking on a runway it was toe first. When did it change? I did a little finishing class when I was a kid and at the end we did a fashion show at the local mall.
Déjà pour faire une comparaison juste, il faudrait deux manteaux de même couleur et de même forme pour justifier le choix de la matière… Montrer un manteau style caban et un pauvre blouson dans une matière improbable n’est pas très cohérent…
What do you think of HauteLeMode's analysis of "Emily in Paris" I find it interesting what is tradition and classy vs what he says is appropriate Parisian approved classy wear.
Silk, wool, leather, gifted rings by grandmas - I agree, this is how you look expensive. But definitely not on a budget. 500 Dollars or even 300 for one coat and another 200 for ONE pair of loafers is not on a budget, sorry, just isn't for most of us. Might be for Kate Middleton, though, but not sure about that either.
The tips are good but I would add creativity and personal approach, otherwise your look will be artless, unless you can afford the best designers. As far as colors, if you get the magic of mixing different subtle hues, you can go from boring to luxe. All and all, there is no formula to looking “expensive”. Being authentic in your way of dressing can also take you from limited or trying too hard, to unique and wonderful. Even between different cultures, the approach can vary (example: French vs Italian, Japanese vs Brazilian). What it counts is the sense of aesthetics, elegance and authenticity.
I like your style and your videos. I am proudly 60y old but I would call you 'hair sister' even if you could be my daughter, because I call 'hair sisters' all the proudly curly women of every age I meet 🙌🤗👩🦱
I love this video, the tips are great. I don't love the phrase "look expensive" or "an expensive woman" though, because objects are expensive not people. Women are often treated like objects whose value depends on their physical appearance. So the phrase, which taps into this idea, is quite icky.
What you call « pinch » is « dart ». That being said, in my personal opinion, this video is more about how to look traditionally elegant rather than expensive. You can absolutely look expensive with color fabric and with shiny fabric like silk, velvet, leather and even with satin. Don’t forget that not everyone can wear color or shiny fabric.
Vegan leather will not last as long as full grain leather, I owned a full grain leather bag that lasted me for a decade and still counting! The vegan leather (mostly PU leather) doesn't even last close to 3 years. There are several suggestions for a more environmental friendly option, which are to purchase either a preloved leather bag or to buy a LWG certified leather product. There have yet to be any evidence to show the durability of a vegan leather is better than real leather.
I think any well kept hair that suits your face is fine. I would say a blunt cut bob is very classy, and also a short pixie, think Audrey Tatou at some point. Then again I do love statement jewelery and rocking a pink bob at the moment, so I might not be the person to advise on this topic😅 😅😅.
I wear a trench-style coat with no belt (I’m 5”1’) and it works for me. It is fitted/A-line so it has a shape without needing a belt. I call it classic-adjacent.
I have to disagree on loose hair looking expensive, it's the contrary. Louse hair is not polished. Look back at jistory and the "expensive" women all had their hair up in some ways, a wig, or something decorative in their hair. It showed that they could afford it and/or have the time to have this done (so not working). Loose hair or normally tied was the way for poor women.
You need to expand your English vocabulary! Lapel. Dart. Tuck. Taper. Look up those words. In this video, you needed to use Lapel but you said something like "flaps" when you should have been talking about the lapel of the coat. Also, I think you were saying "pinch", but you were trying to say the coat should have two darts above the waistline to taper the coat a little. And even the word "tuck" would be better thn pinch.
What’s your main takeaway from this video? 😃
So my tip is to layer textures:
Wool coats have a woven suiting fabric that is structured and feel very stiff and dense (replacing a lining is also a fun way to add in some of your own personal tastes).
Less is more !
I really love your little illustration showing the lines of the outfits (you did this in previous videos, too). I never thought about "more structure" = more expensive looking. But when I compare how I feel in a tailored coat versus a handknitted woolen cape (I love both!), it makes so much sense.
Simplicity first of all. Simplicity as the last level of sophistication.

Curious about the shine vs matte notion when it comes to silks.
Same here. I love silk, but people may think it's polyester.
I have a silk and polyester shirt in my closet and I would say even if they both have shine the difference is notable.
I always love the non-clothing additions, like posture or make up. I am curious about your opinion on the use of vulgarities when trying to look expensive.
Can you please do a spring video for the southern hemisphere trying to look put together

Would you please make a video about how to decorate your house the French classy way!. Thanks
I've really been enjoying your channel, thank you! :) I'm curious: if you could only afford to buy one "everyday" purse, what color would you choose?
Cognac. Because it's going to be easier to match with any other colour as apposed to black that can create to much of a contrast 😊
Perfect, thank you! (I was secretly hoping you'd choose that 😂)
Merci ! Very useful video ! 😊
Your opinion on backpacks?
I found the coat suggestions to be most helpful, Thank you. I appreciate your suggestions for vegan leather bags. I have a simple cork tote, made in Portugal, bought on my last trip to Europe. Thoughts on using that as my handbag? Also I have a vintage (late 60s) cream Austrian made wool cape (handed down from my mother), can I use that as my coat? or should I use for special occasions only? Thank you so much for your beautiful videos, I always find them so informative.
Missing the C o t y lipstick in the flower tube for lips and cheeks and its scent they always had beautiful colors.
Thank you. :)
You're welcome!
Unfortunately I bought a beautiful wool coat and found out that I am extremely allergic to wool. I was able to gift it to someone who really wanted it but I’m always looking for a good quality coat that is not wool. Any recommendations for that would be much appreciated.
Always great advice! Merci❤
Glad you think so! ♥️
Where did you get your gray coat from? I love it so much but I can't see where you've mentioned where it was bought. Thank you..!
It's the one from Mango, its linked in the description 😊
Ah! Thank you! I totally glazed over that one!
I always enjoy your videos although I'm not a "classy" type but still can learn something also what can one do when we don't have a winter at all for nice coats in Cyprus 😊😜
Can you talk about fragrances?
Great video! I loved your 'girl math' lol BUT IT'S SO TRUE! I want to buy quality pieces that look great and will last years. Thank you for your great tips!!
You are so welcome!!
my concern in fall and winter is that I need to wear layered clothes, yet it is so bulky when I have 1 or 2 cardigans under my coat. what to do? I feel cold more often that other people.
Nodding vacantly in Australian (well, Queenslander specifically, we have cold states but most are hot af) through part one 😂
Hello Adriane, thank you for your videos. I apriciate them very much. Would like to make a video about Black Tie Dresscode for women? It would be very helpful. Our christmas event dictates this this year. Greetings from germany.
Could you suggest brands for leather bags in Canada?
I don’t have one for leather but for a vegetable/fruit based option Matt and Nat is great (both for classic looks and colours).
Wow when we were taught as kids walking on a runway it was toe first. When did it change? I did a little finishing class when I was a kid and at the end we did a fashion show at the local mall.
Heck, I would look expensive too if I had my own clothing I designed or made.
Déjà pour faire une comparaison juste, il faudrait deux manteaux de même couleur et de même forme pour justifier le choix de la matière… Montrer un manteau style caban et un pauvre blouson dans une matière improbable n’est pas très cohérent…
I love your channel! Perhaps do a perfume pour les parfums les plus vulgaires (trop ici au US) .... you r a fresh breeze in youtu❤ bonne continuation
What do I wear to a french wedding in the middle of the country side in France at the end of April? Kids are invited
What do you think of HauteLeMode's analysis of "Emily in Paris" I find it interesting what is tradition and classy vs what he says is appropriate Parisian approved classy wear.
Could you make a video for small people? Often things like coats don’t work well for us 🙈
Would love some vegan recommendations! It’s so hard to find good vegan handbags and boots.
How do you say “Girl!” in French? 🥰
😂 you only need to spend $500 😂
It’s a lot, i would say around 300 and then you wear it for more than 3 years :)
Yay! I hate animal print!😝🦒🦓🐅
Thank you so much for your kind comment! ♥️
I love this video, the tips are great. I don't love the phrase "look expensive" or "an expensive woman" though, because objects are expensive not people. Women are often treated like objects whose value depends on their physical appearance. So the phrase, which taps into this idea, is quite icky.
Agreed, for me it is more like classic/timeless.
What is someone to do if one can’t wear wool, not even cashmere, not even 2%
Quality fake fur is really really warm. Wait until Good Friday and shop somewhere like Saks on-line. I got one last year for 70% off.
❤
You look like a close friend of mine😊❤
Any idea on men's wear?😊
You are right about many things ,others however..bit judgemental and old fashion .and again ...classy ppl do respect other lives ( animals)
Anyone age 27 or older needs to grow up and away from wearing polyester. Great compilation of tips.
Anyone witth sweat glands should 😅
@@Polly_Jean haha yes:)
How is $300 for a coat budget friendly?!
compared to luxury items wealthy people usually purchase.
Prefer to say look Elegant, because only the poor people wants to look expensive , remember expensive not matter, matters classy
So many wool coats look wrinkled. Sometimes I see stains on the lapel. How can people upkeep their wool garments? A “ car- wrinkle” look is terrible.
Cashmere coats or cashmere/wool coats don't wrinkle, but are expensive.
"Seams" (scams) on the shoulders...
No short hair styles? Oh, no, I must be vulgar! 😊
Me too 🫣😄
I think any well kept hair that suits your face is fine. I would say a blunt cut bob is very classy, and also a short pixie, think Audrey Tatou at some point. Then again I do love statement jewelery and rocking a pink bob at the moment, so I might not be the person to advise on this topic😅 😅😅.
Trench coat does not fit me as well as other women with the same body type like me. It makes you look a quarter back in football
