Interesting, because although I have been doing the minimalism thing, I am very interested in introducing some boho hero pieces. In fact, the more I look, the more upscale boho looks good to me. I just dont know if I can pull it off. Someone give me courage. I just purchased a vintage faux fur down lined coat off eBay. It's boxy and cool and everything I want. Cant wait to wear. I flowery dress under a sweater sounds like an idea to me.

When a colour comes along that is in fashion for a season that I know either doesn’t suit me or I won’t wear long term, I tend to incorporate it in the form of nail polish. Even colours that are hard to pull off (such as butter yellow, which can make me look jaundiced) are ok on my fingers or even just my toes. It’s a fun way to give a nod to the season (if you like the colour) without over investing.

The idea of chunky loafers being in the doghouse is crazy because I think it was literally just 2 years ago that every brand was ripping off those platform Prada loafers. Like... when did they have time to go out and apparently come back?? I guess with the rise of ballet flats, I noticed less chunky shoes on the market in general this year, but I actually think chunky loafers are only "back" because they never actually went away lol.

Kinda funny that this season I was ahead of the trends. I already have tons of green ( olive, sage, celery) & red ( maroon, wine, aubergine) in my closet. Already had leopard accessories & ditched skinny jeans in favor or wider legs & higher waist several seasons ago. Midis & maxis, that's all I wear as a 64 yr old woman who is not comfortable showing leg sans hosiery. Old school sneakers- never stopped wearing them. The only reason to invest in a trend is if it already aligns with your preferences & needs. Otherwise let it pass on by & wave as it leaves 😅

gotta always be on the lookout for the elements of trends that work for you in a different context too. modern boho chic is inspired by 60s/70s counterculture style, which itself was a retro edwardian "dorelia look" (which was *also* a retro moment from the preraphaelites which...). so my thrifted "boho chic" free people blouse gets paired with a knee-length heavy linen fantail skirt, reproduction 1890s boots, and a swoopy up-do and I'm living the modern gibson girl dream

As a (somewhat) reformed punk, leopard print will never not be a neutral in my wardrobe. And on the topic of studs, they’re really hard to do right from the perspective of pre-studded manufactured items. As I’ve tried to elevate my wardrobe I’ve tried to keep some of my punk influences by getting studded items, but studded items that come from a nice brand always ring false and tacky, and not in a good tacky way. I love an intentionally tacky look, but if you want something studded it’s got to be done yourself (with the obvious exception of just like your classic stud punk belt or wrist cuffs). Studded shoes, studded expensive handbags, studded knitwear, all of these look like someone with no connection to the punk or rock ‘n’ roll scene woke up one day and decided to be “edgy“ and tried to buy their way into that subculture. So even as someone who has a lot of studded items still in my wardrobe, I won’t buy fancy studded things. It’s supposed to look harsh and it’s supposed to show your disdain for the item that you are studding, like you don’t care that it’s “ruining“ an expensive leather jacket to put studs in it. Buying a Valentino rock stud purse is the antithesis of that. it’s quite interesting to me to observe my reactions and find where that line is though.…

The key is to figure out your personal style, whatever that is, choose the best quality you can afford, take care of basic grooming, and wear your style with confidence. Simple.

I've had butter yellow in my wardrobe for a while. It's not a color for everyone. It can get dirty easily, so wearing an apron is a good idea. I don't wear a lot of black. My main neutrals are ivory, taupe/brown, and grey. I usually throw my butter yellow in with light colored laundry, which I have plenty of. If you're unsure about a butter yellow garment for public viewing, you could try finding a nightgown and seeing if you enjoy wearing that color. I love mine.

As an adult I’m always late to the party because I wait for the trend to pass to decide if I really like it and by then it’s on sale. I’m always “so last season”.

For me, riding boots were such a big part of my look 10-15 years ago that they sort of fall into that same outdated millennial set of things - chevron, no show socks, the Han Solo fall outfit (iykyk) etc. Over the years, the riding boots became cheaper and tackier looking. In a way, I still salivate over a beautiful riding boot, but I think my aversion to what the look became ultimately wins out. I will likely stick with western boots, which I have always loved and are also hot right now. I don’t think I will stop loving cowboy boots. I’m currently planning to add a new color of Frye Billy boots to my capsule shoe collection this season.

A pop of leopard print has been a constant in my wardrobe for years! But I can’t see how butter yellow would work with my coloring-it’s just too pale and desaturated to be flattering as anything more than an accessory for me, but then I don’t see them going with the other colors that dominate my wardrobe. Honestly dark cherry is a lot more timeless-feeling for me than butter yellow.
I do like some of the studs I’m seeing! Me + Em has some lovely studded flats, and Freda Salvador’s Ellis Mini Crescent bag makes a very compelling argument for studs in small-ish doses.

Ties are fabric necklaces, just like bolo ties area leather/metal/stone/fabric necklaces.
Wish I could wear riding boots, but I've got big ole ankles, stovepipes as lower legs. Laceup boots are about my only option, especially after an ankle break that happened 20 yrs ago this coming December. Ballet flats don't work for me either. I've got a Morton's foot with a small heel. None of them fit, not to mention simply stay on.
I'm more of a zebra than a leopard print gal, and love plaids. Back in the 80's I grabbed a plaid skirt and top that, even though they were different patterns, they were in the same color family, so I wore them together. Butter yellow looks utterly wretched with my coloring. It's either gotta be an light icy yellow, or in the yellow squash range for me to consider being enwrapped in such hues. Butter yellow on me is much like peach is: blergh.
    Thanks HLP.

    1. Love Carhartt utility jackets with authentic wear that is earned. One Carhartt ball cap is a good minimalist choice to go with everything.
3 I thought Canadian tuxedo was red and black buffalo plaid? Photos look more Boho because of shapes and detail vibes.
    4. Riding boots are a classic, maybe quiet luxury. Leading into Western boot-heels is more of a trend, maybe some tooling details.
    5. Already had a lot of burgundy, dark cherry, cranberry pieces but combining in fresh ways like with adjacent analogous combos or with yellowish, light greens. Color more important in accessories. Dark cherry Maryjanes with kitten heels might satisfy as the one color-statement accessory. I am happy to find new purposes to burgundy-family pieces that I was almost ready to declutter.
    7. Preppy is a classic that stays in my closet decade after decade. Oxford shirt and wool crew neck never looks out of style.
    11. Great observation of T-bar detail. Very useful reminder.
    13. Neckties on a bare neck tucked into an open shirt is a good look too. I am old enough to reminisce about Annie Hall vibes. I think the trend is more about verticality of multiple layers. A great use for all those fabric self-belts when you wrap them like a tie without it actually being a tie.

It’s interesting you found barn jackets to be a more easily incorporated trend compared to riding boots. Personally, I feel people are far more likely to have riding boots in their closets than a barn jacket. In my opinion the boots are pretty classic and I see them every fall/winter despite the fact they haven’t been trending the past few years. Also, you can easily style them under jeans if they are fitted well. Alternatively rarely see women in barn jackets, could all be regional though.

For the most part, a lot of these “trends” are great if done well.
I’m very much Christina Mychas’ stance-these trends aren’t new to us at all (I mean, burgundy, plaid + modern boho -GROUNDBREAKING), lol.
I’ve always loved studs, and totally understand your take on them. As I grow older, it’s more of a textural thing, rather than giving off an edge. I’m more of an embossed textile than metal spike for the most part, now.
When it comes to shoes, I agree it’s such a functional purchase, esp for those of us in all season locations. A riding boot is a staple! As for chunky loafers, I’ve felt they’re a classic, esp in the prep, grunge, + punk aesthetic. I’ve seen it worn internationally for decades. Love it on others, just not on myself.
Was I the only one who’d flashed back to JLo’s glove fit denim jumpsuit when reviewing the Canadian tux?! 😄

    1. Plaid is good sometimes. Will likely wear stuff I already have. Not sure about adding anything though.
    2. Boho tends to look sloppy, but occasionally can work. It’ll remain a maybe category.
    3. Denim on denim can look cool, but somehow never looks right on me.
    4. Riding boots are pretty classic. They may be more popular at times, but never totally go out.
    5. I own dark cherry, love it and wear it. This isn’t a trend for me.
    6. Prep school style works in a certain venue. It’s not quite something I go out of my way to wear these days, but definitely have in the past. It’s fairly classic and tends to work well in an office wear you don’t have to wear a suit, but need to be fancier than jeans.
    7. Chunky loafers look cool on other people.
    8. Animal print in moderation is good. Some people can go all out. It’s usually best in natural looking colors.
    9. I like the butter yellow trend, but rarely wear yellow. It seems like something to buy one piece for, but don’t invest a lot in it. Trying different things out from time to time makes things more interesting.
    10. T-bar shoes. These usually look best as heals I don’t really wear anymore. Can be great though.
    11. I have a few things with fur accents. Going all out isn’t for me. It’s also generally polyester. It’s not my fav, but can look cool on some people.
    12. Neckties might be cool. Might be worth trying out. Maybe…
    13. Not for me.
Trend note are a good time to reflect on what works for you, experiment a little, and use things you haven’t used in awhile.

Chunky loafers are going to be in for a long time and many more seasons in my opinion. They really do come back each fall it seems.
I think they're worth investing in if they suit your style. And your style mood board says they do. Go for it, Hannah!

Footwear trends I need to ignore - long boots never go up my calves, chunky shoes just look stupid on me, and I've stayed with pointed flats since 2003 😂
Glad that I already have dark cherry accessories- trends just came to me!

At minute 15:12, you say that if you already have items to pull off the trend then "it is your moment to shine." I have never been one to buy based on seasonal trends, so like this framing that seasonal trends give different people moments to shine. In the book of my life, there will be seasons when I am on trend and seasons where I am not, but all along, I will dress like me.
