Not to presume, but if you're looking bad in turtle necks and button downs because of a large bust, I have a couple of tips. Turtle necks make large busts look saggy because of the expanse of cloth between neck and apex. To combat that, wear a necklace over the turtle neck to visually break up the space. For a button down, buy larger and then have it tailored with darts. Of course we can also just avoid these garments. But it helps to know I think.

I'm a stylist. The 'basics' look bad on most people because not everyone can wear khaki, black, white and navy, nor can everyone wear 'basic' shapes. Most people shop separates (on sale) and don't consider their best colors, shapes and overall balance. Instead of 'basic', go for a capsule wardrobe bought at one store. Many stores these days have stylists that would love to help.
So true, people underestimate the power colour can have on the way they look. These "neutral colours" actually don't suit everyone. But finding out I have a warm-neutral undertone and look best in soft colours has honestly helped my styling so much.
@@ellag8068As a neutral fair muted olive, "white" for example is a wide category. Yeah maybe I can't wear pure bright titanium white in satin finish. But ivory, cream and many other "off-white" shades, as well as the bright white when is a bit sheer and the opacity is lower, suit me very well. And they all are still considered basics! Same with charcoal for black, muted dark sage green, etc.
Being a Soft Summer i steer clear from whites, blacks, beiges. My go fors are dusty pinks, mauves, plums, burgundy 8:08 , lavender, petrol, greys plus, for the summer season - lots of navy and for autumn - a bit of greens from our pallet. I sometimes cheat with other seasons as long as it the colour feels good next to my face. Moreover, I pay attention to fabrics: wool, cashmere, linen, cotton with hemp, suede, a tiny dose of not too shiny silk. I know which necklines and fashions don’t work for me, so I try to avoid them. Trends come and go, it’s better to work out what truly works for us.
@@Domnisoaraoclipa I am soft summer too and agree with you.. But sometimes a little bit of dramatic black and creating contrasts is nice too.. Especially in the evening wardrobe
What Not To Wear had a bunch of issues, but one of the things I feel like still holds truth today, is tailoring. It’s also something Tim Gunn talked about a lot in his column in Marie Claire back in the day.
@lachell257 I also watched both of those shows. Recently a friend asked me (I am a woman in her late 50s with 50-60 pounds of excess weight packed on) if I wear leggings! I tried to hold back my revulsion, and went into explain about the advantages of *straight legged pants that fall straight from a hip to the floor,* and I mentioned "What Not to Wear" with Stacey and Clinton Kelly... And I got a total blank stare from my friend. 😆
All my clothes are inexpensive and basic, but when it comes to my handbags… I go all out. I often think maybe it’s too much to have an accent piece like that with my basic jeans, but you have made me feel so much better about it!
Thats cool, everyone goes for something, to some its shoes, other watches, makeup or perfumes something they are attached to. Have a friend who goes all out with scents for every occasion every season
This is probably the most concise, honest, and helpful fashion video I’ve watched all year! I love all the examples on you. I also like how you speak about body shapes. They’re not better or worse than others, just different shapes! ❤
I started a sustainable fashion journey some 1 year and a half ago. Switched to second hand buying, got my colour analysis done, and started following sustainable fashion influencers that would mostly advertise dressing with basics, with a lot of inspiration from Pinterest. I have to say that this process has helped me to declutter my previous wardrobe and slowly start to understand my personal style. However, I realised that basics never look like those on Pinterest on me. I mostly end up looking bland and uninteresting when wearing basics. So I'm going back again to introducing good unique pieces in my wardrobe, but this time with more awareness. Pinterest pictures look so good not only because of the features of the models, but also because of posing, lighting and many more embellishments that don't translate into real life.
If you know anything about Kibbe system (or similars) you know that models and most of influencers have a (Flamboyant) Natural body. This type of body looks gorgeous in basics and relaxed lines. Dramatics also look fine in basics, but if they're long and structured. Classics look good in basics when they are well tailored for their body, and the have a little of old money influence in the details (so no plain basics). Gamines look fantastic when they don't wear the typical basic, but cropped, contrasted in colors and patterns. And maybe Romantics look worse, because plain basics nowadays are cut and ensembled as men's clothes (is easier so cheaper to produce), and this body shape needs to transmit femenine energy (in colours, shapes, etc). To conclude, I think all of us need to find which are our "basics"
Ironically enough I'm a Flamboyant Natural but despite having a strong vertical line (long slender arms, long slender neck, long face etc.), wide shoulders and a generally masculine energy I'm also curvier than the "standard" for FN because I have lipoedema. This means I don't look good in the "relaxed basic Pinterest influencer" style but anything too feminine and curve-accentuating looks comical. It's a constant balancing act!
Yesss exactly. I'm a theatrical romantic and I think the hardest type for basics to look good, I don't have the height or width to pull off most normal basics let alone oversized which is popular. I feel like it would be kind of hard for romantics too, but they can find soft blousy basics and it should look okay, but for theatrical romantic we need well fitted (hard to find in itself) soft but with some sharpness too in it and I just honestly don't know what basics would fill all those categories 😅 even outfit suggestions for that type are usually extremely glamorous and often 1950s looking fashion too
John Kitchener's 7 essences too. Those are better than kibbe. How is an ethereal person supposed to look good in classic clothes. It doesn't work. And people have mismatched body and face so kibbe doesn't work always
You really know your stuff. You have taken basics and elevated them to look elegant with accessories and shoes. Great job! You know how to dress to your best advantage, and I appreciate your advice. Even though I am not a petite, I can still use your wisdom.
I’m so glad I found your channel! I’m 5’3”. I lived in warm climates for 30 years. I got away with shorts and capris. I look forward to perusing your videos!
A question I constantly ask myself when scrolling Pinterest: is this actually cute/stylish/elegant, or is the model just tall and skinny? Having a critical eye for your own body shape and what you want to look like, image wise, is what you really need when scrolling.

Great insights here! I see this a lot on all kind of style fronts (even with art and design!) The focus on "basics" and neutrals also means that folks aren't using their style to express their own personal aesthetic based on their individual interests and tastes! We need to let folks embrace creativity and step away from "basic".
Yes, this video hits so well! It's true. One of the best pieces of advice i like to follow from women who are style influencers on the net is: find models or influencers who have the same or similar body shape as you so it's easier to see how thubgs would look on you without having to try a bunch of stuff on! I do know st that and it really does make a difference!
0:23 wait but that all black outfit on the left actually looks great!!! the pants are definitely a different cut from the comparison photo but i think it looks fab!!! i would actually even buy those pleated trousers youre wearing!! 👀👀 where are they from???
There is a meme for this. What the model looks like in this outfit: photo of an Arabian horse with flowing mane and tail, running over grassy hills. What I look like in this outfit: Dumpy, scruffy little Shetland pony sitting on its butt in the barnyard. Exactly!
Oprah had a show about this about 15 years ago. Two British ladies were talking about dressing for your body, not what it looks like on the model. It was a good show and I’m curious to see what their advice was compared to what we do now! 😂
Although im no classed as petite (5'7) , i do find your advice extremely helpful. I have a large bust and menopausal belly and these tips are brilliant 🥰🥰🥰🥰
You are the best stylist on you tube. This is especially true for us petite ladies. Thanks to you I am more successful in fighting my natural instincts that are not the most flattering😆😆😆😘
You also can't see all the pins and clips on the back of the outfit that are making it look so fitted and tailored. Also, tons of cloth and material draped all over a 5'10" woman will look better than on a petite woman who will just look overwhelmed with clothing.
You’re so right. I think most people look at models and influencers and pick and choose what works for them though. They’re just inspiration. You look great in the “tweaked” outfits btw.
actually the black example at 0:24 looks really cute on you. the waist/hips of those pants are a really nice silhouette on you. i know it doesn't fit quite right but that style of the looseness on the hips tapering down is nice!
5’2” here too and this sort of not quite right look always happens to me. I’ve learned to always order the “cropped” version of any pants I want otherwise I look ridiculous. And YES to the 3/4 sleeves. Those are also a game changer. Great video, very helpful advice. New subscriber here!
Very good points - and perfect timing! :) One thing to note about the boyfriend blazers (or any more 'masculine' type of clothes), is to remember to do a softer and more feminine hair and makeup look. If you go with too harsh a lipstick, very drawn eyebrows and hair that is too 'perfect' or structured, it will make you look much older and more strict. If you go in with a softer shade of lipgloss, very lightly defined brows and a 'tousled soft curls' look, it will make you look more like the 'cool girl'.
Basics bore me always have! I think there are ladies that this style naturally looks good on them but thank god we are all different and we need to find our own style that looks natural with us🌸

I am over 50 and have huge boobs. There is no way I will wear a mock neck! It would only emphasize how much space there is between my head and my boobs. I also look shorter and more bottom heavy in wide leg pants. That first outfit would never work for me. Shapes and necklines that flatter are my keys to making an outfit look good.
Mock neck shows off my neck wrinkles, makes them worse by bunching them up, unfortunately. It's a beautiful look for a smaller chest and a neck in good shape.
I have large boobs, too, and also a very short neck. Yes, it's important to find something that works for you :) I think the first outfit would also work with medium wide leg pants in full length instead of ankle length and you could upgrade the V-neck shirt with a necklace as a "replacement" for the collar.
I'm top heavy too, but super tall with long skinny legs. The first outfit is my go-to - mock neck covers my aging neck and decolletage and minimizes the boob area AS LONG AS ITS BLACK or another dark color. The wide leg high waist pant makes me look less like the triangle I am 🤣 Amazing how the same outfit can work for a couple of wildly different bodies (mine & hers) but not work on others (yours). So many variations in our sizes and shapes, it's a shame that very few clothing retailers really take much of that into consideration. I'm glad there are more options today for petite, tall, and curvy ladies, but we really need some thought from clothing designers and manufacturers put into variations in body shape like straight, hourglass, triangle, pear, apple etc and have size options for that or lines of fashion known to cater to a specific shape... Something like that. Or more off the rack clothes made well enough with fabric sufficient for tailoring to be more commonly utilized and worth the cost. Tailoring usually doesn't help me because it's hard to make things longer, but it does help when I have to go larger to fit the wide shoulders and chest.
I only wear V-neck tops and blouses or scoop neck because they look best. I don’t wear skinny jeans, but I do like slim leg jeans. I could never wear some of the outfits she suggested and pull it off.
@@angelirohival6270 Me too although I do own a couple of low crew necks that I always wear with a longer necklace to create a V and put some vertical lines in my outfit.

The outfits in the beginning are improved with heels already ( plus posture). Thanks for the do-able tips. Wish I know how to tailor it to me ( short, wide shoulders & hips ...) Sometimes just wear the fashion you like :)
I always incorporate accessories, it's a simle way to refresh a look. I also ensure my waist is accentuated at almost all times. My hair gets greasy really fast so I find different ways to make my hair interesting on bad hair days
Thank you for these amazing tips! I've also noticed that wearing basics alone is not flattering for my body type. I'm not necessarily petite but I have long torso and wide hips, so basics like straight leg jeans look really unflattering on me. I feel like only those IG models with good proportion could really pull off basics without putting too much effort in.
THANK YOU FOR THIS INFORMATION!!! I am one of those women who have NEVER looked good in any basic outfit. Now I understand why... So many years of frustration.

Instead of 'basic', go for a capsule wardrobe bought at one store. Many stores these days have stylists that would love to help.
Navy is a colour most peopke can wear!
😂😂😂 I thought I was the only one who remembered that show. I also watched How Do I Look? with Jennie Mai.
This is an exceptional video! Thank you for educating us petite women on how to look our best.
Aly Art did an amazing dissection on kibbie types. Check it out!
Exactly, my basic is a mid lenght koton-hemp white dress, i never wear jeans
Now I just moved back up north in the Spring S and am facing buying new warm-weather clothes. And oh boy! NOW I remember all the hemming, and the back-waist length being too long making the pants pooch, and why I started sewing my own clothes out of sheer frustration. I look forward to perusing your videos!
A question I constantly ask myself when scrolling Pinterest: is this actually cute/stylish/elegant, or is the model just tall and skinny?
Having a critical eye for your own body shape and what you want to look like, image wise, is what you really need when scrolling.
Yes! It's always "is this fashion or is she just thin?"
When I see something look bad on a model, it’s an automatic pass for me.
Your commentary in this video is SIMPLY BRILLIANT! You are absolutely correct that what it takes to pull together a fabulous outfit, head to toe, takes a tremendous amount of effort!
This was such an informative video! I appreciate how you show yourself in the clothes and then show the adjustments you made. So helpful!
Thanks for explaining things so well. I love your channel and visual examples.
Wow I truly admire yr analysis power, it goes deeper than I thot! It's clear u have gone thru the same pain points as many of us when it comes to copying trendy outfit styles we see online but rather than give up when we find it looks shabby on us, u find ways to make the same look work by customising it to the person.. love ur thinking! It's so common sense and yet somehow I never realised it 😅 thank you! 🥰
These are fantastic tips and explain exactly why I've been having so much trouble with outfits. I also really appreciate that you use yourself as an example and really break down the changes step by step. New subscriber!
Wonderful Chi. I always struggle putting together an inspiration outfit. Proportions matter. Thanks Chi
And ladies, please utilize your tailor and get alterations on your sleeves, dress or skirt lengths and overall fit for your body. Tailored clothes look so much more put together
Spot on!! Love, love, love how you showed how small tweaks make the outfit more suitable for your body type! Please do more videos like this!
I’m petite and so many basics look frumpy on me! I need more structure and I need to have 70% of my items tailored. Even tho they’re petite!
You look great. I'm 5 ft and getting ready to go through my fall clothes. You gave me good advice and inspiration with the outfits you chose. Thanks!
I liked the black outfit on the left much better, lol. The v-neck, the pants and accessory-free. Much rather wear that!
You are amazing- I couldn’t put my finger on what I was doing wrong until I watched this😅😅 love the all black outfit. What would you add for a layer?
There is a meme for this. What the model looks like in this outfit: photo of an Arabian horse with flowing mane and tail, running over grassy hills. What I look like in this outfit: Dumpy, scruffy little Shetland pony sitting on its butt in the barnyard. Exactly!
Mmm….I know what you mean - a bit discouraging! 😊
Thing is, the ponytail looks simple but is not made by just putting in an elastic.
😂😂😂
🤣👍👏👏👏👏 I know, right?!!!
😂❤
I am 5'7" and still always learn a lot from your style tips. They are sooo good.
This is why shops were better than online shopping 😮
Oprah had a show about this about 15 years ago. Two British ladies were talking about dressing for your body, not what it looks like on the model. It was a good show and I’m curious to see what their advice was compared to what we do now! 😂
That British woman was Trinny. She has a great UA-cam channel.
Trinny is still very much active. Check her Closet Confessions
Trinny and Suzannah
Trinny Woodal and Susanns Constantine❤
I’m glad I read the comments and found that Trinny has YT channel. I’ve been trying to watch their old shows on YT which are not many out there.
Easy: have to take into account whether the model's body shape is similar to your, otherwise it may be a disaster.
As a tall person, sometimes the sample worn by the model is longer than what is actually for sale.
@@ifetayodavidson-cade5613oh no!
You also can't see all the pins and clips on the back of the outfit that are making it look so fitted and tailored. Also, tons of cloth and material draped all over a 5'10" woman will look better than on a petite woman who will just look overwhelmed with clothing.
@@hillarywhite7515 this technique very common on fashion models
They are models for a reason
3/4 sleeves are a life saver!
3/4 sleeves bunch up when you try to put a jacket on over them.
@@linnie3942Yeah, and they are too much for the hot weather and too little for the chill weather.
Agreed, love 3/4 length.... they can be hot or cold weather, depending upon where you live.
Agreed.
So true
You’re so right. I think most people look at models and influencers and pick and choose what works for them though. They’re just inspiration.
You look great in the “tweaked” outfits btw.
You are the only stylist anybody needs!!! 💐
I love how youre styling. Followed right away. Im also petite at 5'4 and kept running out of ideas. Glad i found your channel. More power
actually the black example at 0:24 looks really cute on you. the waist/hips of those pants are a really nice silhouette on you. i know it doesn't fit quite right but that style of the looseness on the hips tapering down is nice!
One thing to note about the boyfriend blazers (or any more 'masculine' type of clothes), is to remember to do a softer and more feminine hair and makeup look.
I guess that's if you want to look young and feminine, not everyone really wants to look like that but I guess maybe this channels viewers might
Yeah disagree. Brooke Shields says “hiii”
Thank you so much for sharing the idea of petite outfit. I am not as slim/ tall as a model. Those are "wearable" clothings in daily life.
Basics bore me always have! I think there are ladies that this style naturally looks good on them but thank god we are all different and we need to find our own style that looks natural with us🌸
I am not petite but tall but this video was still so good 😍 thank you!!
Every word of this is useful. One of your best.
I'm just impressed of how you show what is not working for your body type as learning us how to choose outfits- so confident and actually helpful!
Yes! Finally someone of my race and body type modelling clothes and teaching me! They honestly should hire models that are short and round because its so hard ro learn to dress when models dont look like... well, a role model.
I’m glad you said your black outfit is not bad but not what you’re aiming for.. cuz it looked okay and comfy ❤
This video is truly inspiring! I don’t usually share recommendations, but I have to tell you about the book women’s magic truths on borlest. It offers unique perspectives on wealth and self-care that you won’t find elsewhere. Wishing everyone all the best
The wide leg high waist pant makes me look less like the triangle I am 🤣
Amazing how the same outfit can work for a couple of wildly different bodies (mine & hers) but not work on others (yours).
You're actually correct, whenever I'm wearing ang outfit and it seems like it wasn't right but when I added jewelry it elevated the style and make it all put together/fit together
Can't agree more! I have always felt that basics were not working for me but until your video, I didn't know why? Thanks for your insights!
Thank you for this video! I couldn't pinpoint what is wrong every time I wear basics. This is spot on!
Keep up with this theme please. It’s brilliant!
what an insightful video! the difference between the before and afters are amazing! great job!
Yes! Basics are the plain canvas that makes your sprinkle pieces shine ❤
Excellent point! ❤
Thank you Chi, what fabulous ideas , I love how you are so honest with your advice and tips, you have really helped me to better my style..have a lovely day🎉
I would recommend buying colors and tailoring them to your body type and modifying the suit to your specific needs
This video was so helpful! So simple, but makes so much sense (as someone who is drawn to those “basic” styles). ❤
YOU ARE! the first person talking about style and fashion that I can respect and actually learn. I can't stand the influencer leg move when they try to show how "elegant" they look.... Man I'm so happy to find your channel. SPOTLESS! 💖
thank you for your honesty!
Such smart descriptions! I always feel uncomfortable in basics even when those same pieces feel good in other combinations, and now I know why!
I’ve seen them also pin the clothes in the back where you can’t tell in the picture that the “unstructured outfit” is structured on the model
You do such a great job of showing off every feature! mirbag’s reviews always give me the full picture.
This LYXBAGS tote is beautifully colored, very sturdy and the perfect size. Not too small, not too big.
I’ve found that contour t shirts work the best and look great with anything! Contour shirts really sculpt the body.
While I am not petite, I just subscribed to your channel because this was a very helpful video. Thank you.
I totally agree with you! I have broad shoulders so i do NOT look good with typical “basic” t-shirts sighh
This is great, gives us the reality and how to fix it. Thank you!
This was the most relatable video I’ve seen for the average shopper thank you!!!!!!
I love how you demonstrate the tweaks that turn basic into stylin'. Keep it up! Thank you!
Wowwwwwww! These are such great tips! Thank you- the wide leg pant tip is going to make such a difference for me!
It's really about picking the right basics for your body shape and seasonal color.
I am 5‘10“ and 200lbs. I am in no way petite, yet I subscribe and watch every one of your videos! You always give brilliant perspective on how to leave the house looking my best! Thank you!!!!
This video popped up randomly on my feed.
However, I am so happy it did!
This is a fantastic video!
I’m now subscribed!
So glad to find someone with almost the same body shape! I'm just a bit shorter than you and those changes are going to change my life. I always go for the structured look and have gotten compliments. Certain styles and capris pants make me look like a little kid.
Fantastic explanation! As a petite woman, I myself struggle to find anything decent to flatter my bodytype. Thank you, dear!
You’re so good at this! You see things most people are blind to. I am tall but I’m going to learn from this video
More expensive basics are also constructed better. I always wondered why i couldn't imitate the nice basic styles that i saw with cheap basics.
Excellent video!! I noticed a white top with black edging/piping at 5:03. Where is that from? Thank you!!❤
Such a valuable video! I don’t often promote books, but the book women’s magic truths on borlest is an exception. It’s packed with insights on wealth and self-care that are not widely known. All the best to everyone
Excellent advices! I look pretty good in basics, but I have to pay much attention on body shape and proportion.
Yes it’s in the details, shape and texture play a huge part
I love your videos youre the only creator i can really relate to with a petite and long bust body
Great video. Now subscribed. that off-the-shoulder black top looks like it was made for you
5:00 is so true! I love wearing super plain basic clothes if I’m carrying a designer purse. It just matches best to me
