Mountain Man Triathlon | Fire Lighting Challenge: Impossible?

  • In this video, we take a trip to Coal Creek for a good, old-fashioned "Mountain Man" competition. Competitors participate in the course of fire using their flintlocks and tomahawks, but intermixed are mountain man survival challenges like setting a trap, starting a fire, and casting ball.
    Competitors are timed and their hits are scored to decide who goes home a winner.
    In all seriousness, this is a friendly competition and an in-depth look at a classic muzzleloading match, lovingly called "The Mountain Man". Unlike a regular "stand and shoot" competition, mountain man competitions test your accuracy, endurance, and strength all at once.
    Fire kits will be soaked, fingers will be pinched, beards will be singed.

    Wow..... that guy Paul is the real deal... That's the kind of guy I'd want to be with in the woods. He's truly skilled and when things gets tough, he keeps going. And everyone else also seems very skilled and friendly. Thanks for this video and congrats for the way you've presented the whole thing.

    So much for worrying about the sprue on a roundball anymore after watching the hand forged roundball ring a gong at 50 yards!

      Right, use your two feet, or two forked sticks to push down on the springs. Set it on a rock, or a piece of wood, or, ideally, carry a flat piece of wood with you to use as a solid base.

    What is the average caliber size for these flintlocks? And are there any restrictions on caliber size? My son and I are looking into getting started with this great group of people. Any and all help would greatly be appreciated.

    • @BR549-2
      @BR549-2 Місяць тому +2

      Whatever caliber works for you. Early rifles tended to be larger caliber, as the big game disappeared smaller calibers became more popular. I use a .36 for squirrel and a .54 for deer. If you get one it's almost guaranteed more will follow.

    • @ILoveMuzzleloading
      @ILoveMuzzleloading  Місяць тому

      The previous comment hit the nail on the head, the .54 is probably the most common at something like this, but 50 and 45 are very comon as well. Most will have a bore larger than .50 and one smaller than .50.
      For this match, I brought my .62 smoothbore and a .54 pistol to a match like this but there were several .40s around as well.

    How to make fire with a flintlock. A sea service pistol is ideal something with a nice powerful spark Take a little bit of a cotton ball. Dust with priming powder put in pan of empty gun fire a couple of times. It'll be a hot coal . A matchlock is still an excellent weapon fwiw. Never goes outta style. And does anyone shoot blunderbuss as a competitive gun ?
