Grandmaster Ben Finegold presents a lecture at the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis covering some games from the Chess Club Ladder. 2014.01.29
Actually, as a fellow 1300, when I analyse my game, I noticed I'm making the most mistakes with knight. Pawns are usually pretty good for me(except last game, where I missed one good pawn move five moves on a row, until my opponent made it impossible).
At 14:06, Ben says, "You have three pieces that can take (the black pawn) on D4. Somebody suggested to take it with the white C pawn. Ben kept a straight face, and said, "with the pawn", but that's risky because it gives black a "slight" advantage. Then, he kept a straight face while we discovered what an enormous understatement that was. Hilarious! This was entertaining to watch.
I had a hard time finding the moves but when Ben asked "What's the most violently, lashing out move white could play" I was like "that sounds like me" and I found B4 immediately
@@liver1865 What is this discussion about. It looks like NH4+ means NH4 (I guess we'd annotate it Nh4) with check! These look like chess moves. I guess the + means this molecule is a positively charged ion or something? Not that it's giving check?
Many of his jokes are obscure references that barely land even when you know the source, and despite the fact he has a right to be cocky, I could see him intimidating more potential chess players rather than inspiring. His shtick gets old fast. but, I’m glad you love him. Different pov are important.
was in the library with headphones on drinking coffee and when Ben went "i like colors" i almost spat it everywhere. gotta be careful while watching his lectures lmao
Ben Finegold will play against somebody who plays TERRIBLE!!! And Ben will checkmate him "with advantage" because checkmating is good because you win. Then his opponent will cry. Then Ben will call the director. Let's go Ben!!! More of his & Akobian's videos please...
I don't like how this guy teaches. What exactly did anyone learn, outside of the opening option of black playing c5? I still like bishop to f5 a lot more.
Man I love your lectures! I started playing chess 3 months ago and I'm already 1150 on lichess.. all my friends say I've had a great improvement in such a short time! Thanks Gm Ben
It was sad to hear of Gyula Sax passing away. I had studied many of his games over the years. Enjoy your knowledge and humor Ben! Wish there was a book on him.
Wow Ben played very accurately in the second game. While he was doing his consolidation everything except for Nh8(which as Ben said the computer didn't like altough it's still not that bad) was top move for my Houdini, and indeed the best plan for white was a4-a5 all the way until Ben started attacking.

at 13:12 if the white knight moves as the black bishop is threatening it the black bishop cannot take the pawn on g2 as after white moves the knight to g5 and then black takes the pawn on g2 with the bishop, white can play f3 trapping the bishop and it can then be taken by simply playing rook to g1. just something I picked up there as he said after white moves his knight away black can then take the pawn which he cannot
The rotating GM. Is that when he with advertisements on his back promotes Saint Louis Chessclub? Or when he shows his greatness in all it´s magnitude? Or when the opponents move gives him rotating fish in the cap? I don´t know and I find it a challenging mystery I want to solve.

Anna Kournikova joke "Looks good but it's not gonna win" caught me by surprise. 38:06 for anyone who gets that old reference.
In this video I got my very unusual (suspicious) plan from both Ben and Anand with playing a4 a5 but this time not in a Caro-Kann I play it in the QG with white getting rid of my isolated pawn.
Ive started to play the caro-kann but im doing not so great with it I always end up pend in and defending with no attacking ideas of my own, im hoping Ben will put me right
In twenty years time there will be lectures on this channel from GM kenwest.
Chessiah I agree. GM Kanye West will happen one day.
@Rizky Satya Who is Arthur ???
@Rizky Satya You supposed to be say "Exactly "
Qa4 in that first game was pretty nice.
2 weeks ago Arjun gave a lecture.
Ben's lectures are Gold
Fine gold, at that.
Maddolis 24 carat!

Nice one 😂
more like mining for gold because you have to sift through the drivel
A mix between stand-up and chess... BRILLIANT! ;O) Instructive AND funny... what more can you ask?!

Ben actually could do standup

"I have to give my opponent a chance, this pawn structure isn't bad enough" - me losing every game
@@legrandliseurtri7495 I get smashed by knights as a 1000, still randomly lose pieces to them
But still amazing how he manages to control nine pawn islands with only 6 pawns. xD

That's what good teachers do. They don't belittle someone for trying to learn or answering something wrong.
I had a hard time finding the moves but when Ben asked "What's the most violently, lashing out move white could play" I was like "that sounds like me" and I found B4 immediately
I found b4 based on his description, but I'd never consider that move. If I was feeling aggressive, I'd probably play Rg1 in that position
I fucking love this guy. I do not even care that much about chess I just like hearing these.
+Vicious Lamp Hahahahaahha this is hilarious dude
He talks like Saul from Breaking Bad
like saul from better call saul
At 36:37, Ben's move Nh8 is indeed the computer move! Good job Ben :)
Only thing that makes me happier than seeing a new Ben lecture is the next Ben lecture... /fanboy

There's no NH4. only ammonia (NH3) and ammonium (NH4+)

Very pleased to see Ben back!
Mr. finegold i think you are so funny. You could be in the movies or something.
+Luis Múzquiz He reminds me of my 8th grade humanities teacher
"..or something," for sure.
He is a GM? Anyone know his current ELO?

Very inspiring and informative instructions! GM Finegold is “gold standard” of a great player and a greater teacher of chess!
The clarity of explanation here is exceptional.

"Now we know the 'GM' is in quotes". Best line of the video.
So good. Poor Ken West
love your talks! edutainment at its finest
This is a good one, great Ben humor. His lectures are just fun to watch even if you do not want to learn anything, but yet you do.
ah, soo entertaining and still learned so much! Love this guy
Really funny guy. That chemistry joke cracked me up.
This guy's hilarious! It'd be great to see more of his lectures.

Don't worry Ben, the people at home got your Topalov-Shirov reference

I call this game: The Wrath of Caro-Kann
Ben is great! Thank you Ben!
14:38 loves it when Ben says it gives black a 'slight advantage' when it's actually a game ending blunder
Here in 2021, great lecture 👍🏾
Year 2023. Still a perfect chess stand-up comedy show 😁
Ben should adopt the phrase Kasparov uses when someone suggests a not so brilliant move. He calls it a "rare continuation" .
Best teacher in my opinion
You are already the best Ben 😂❤
I guessed a4, a5 etc right away! Great video!!
Yeah, this video is pretty awesome.

Very funny man. I really enjoyed this lecture, he really has sense of humor

You are an unrealized huge comedian! Such a great Jewish humour :) thanks for the lecture; you really made me laugh and more educated.
2:09 Grandmaster beater... thx just inhaled coffee from unexpected laughter.
You are actually almost correct about the NH3/NH4 pun, NH3(Ammonia) is a gas and NH4(Ammonium) is a salt.
what website does he use?
Can we please have a ken west vs finegold analyze this video?
i love his comedy
Ben, I want to play carro-kann Tal line (e4 c6 d4 d5 e5 Sf5 h4) But I can't found any materials on this line
If anyone wonders GM Sax, Gyula. It's not pronounced they way Ben did, but kudos for mentioning him.
Anyone have a link to the game Preston wins against GM?
