Should be noted that the tension started ratcheting up at the very beginning of the game, when Ding took 25 minutes or so, maybe more, to play a5 and then some 20 more minutes to play his next move. He kept burning big chunks of time even before they'd entered the middlegame, ending up nearly an hour behind a Gukesh who looked like he was coasting. The commentators were panicking, Ding was twitching as if struggling to control a seizure, and the comments section was bursting with predictions of a whitewash for Gukesh. Well, in case anyone is still wondering, that was just Ding playing classical chess like a world champion. He isn't the best player in the world, but he IS the reigning world champion. Everyone else except Magnus sit tf down and be humble.

I got a funny feeling this is going to be a blowout. Gukesh is super talented. He played the tournament of his life at the candidates. Fabiano, Nepo and even Alireza are stronger players than him in my opinion. This isn't going to be a pretty battle.

This was Ding's strategy over the past year+. Play poorly, get the chess world against you, and then come out like a beast.
I think ding is doing the principle in art of war. Appear near when you are far and appear far when you are near. Congrats to the classical king.
