In The Ways Of The Ancients, She Found A Hope For The Future.
A small Maori village faces a crisis when the heir to the leadership of the Ngati Konohi dies at birth and is survived only by his twin sister, Pai (Academy Award® nominee* Keisha Castle-Hughes). Although disregarded by her grandfather and shunned by the people of her village, twelve-year-old Pai remains certain of her calling and trains herself in the ways and customs of her people. With remarkable grace and courage, Pai summons the strength to both challenge and embrace a thousand years of tradition in order to fulfill her destiny.

For those wondering what's going on here, she's crying because her grandfather didn't show up to the event, where she'd planned to surprise him with this speech dedicated to him.
Her grandfather (koro in Māori) was proud of the male dominated lineage going back to their ancestor, Paikea. Grandfather was disappointed Pai, being female, was the twin who survived when her mother and brother died during her birth. He also didn't want her to receive the name Pai.
Pai spends her life trying to win her grandfather's heart, but he shuns her, believing her to be bad luck for their family (whānau) and their tribe (iwi). He excludes her from activities and focuses his efforts on the boys in the tribe, believing they are more worthy of his time and of the training. This is despite the fact that his granddaughter Pai consistently proves herself to be far more formidable, astute and naturally capable in tikinga and in heart than any of the boys in the area. Her grandfather fails to acknowledge her for this, or worse, at times scolds her for showing that the boys are left wanting in comparison to her own abilities.
Grandfather isn't a bad guy in the classic sense - he is a proud man who genuinely believes that Pai and the events surrounding her birth don't bode well for the future of his tribe - the backdrop being a world that is ever changing around them due to European dominance and the declining interest of local Māori in te ao Māori (the Māori world).
I won't spoil the ending, suffice to say you should never underestimate a wahine Māori who, despite what she could be capable of, simply wants nothing more in this world than to show her love for her whānau - and to be loved in return.
A great comment, thanks.
A truly beautiful film. If you haven’t seen it yet I implore you to spend a couple of hours and watch this hidden classic. It’s still impacted me after nearly 20 years since I first watched it.
Where is it found kindly?
@@christinemulinge3222 I have it on DVD but it’s also on Amazon Prime I believe.
Well said. A beautiful film. One of those quiet gems that have the capacity to make us a little better as a human being, if we watch patiently.

This was the first and only film I watched again right after finishing. I want to watch it again! Also, Once were warriors and rabbit proof fence are other good ones.
The reason why she’s crying because her grandfather is mean to her and he wasn’t there to see her presentation
That and it’s a little more than that

Can someone list me the attitudes shown in the movie. please?
She should have won the Oscar she was ripped off by Charlize Theron ….yeah whatever
Too bad Whale Rider wasn’t a Hollywood movie.
Charlize was amazing throughout. Keisha was only amazing in a few, including this one .
@@Andrew-ch1zf nah the Academy weren’t about to make her the youngest to ever receive an Oscar
The Oscars are pretty meaningless anyway. People know a great movie when they see it. We don't need validation for our opinions from a bunch of self-obsessed twats.
Great flick. Wonderful performance by an untrained little girl. Amazing.
Be Back in 12 minutes
good
Goodbye Family.... Thanks Christine.....#NYU2011
Why does she cry for?
Her grandfather didn't show up for her speech dedicated to him; she doesn't know about the whales yet.
