What's annoying to me is Koro sees Pikea on the whale out in sea & although speechless there is this look of disdain & disbelief on his face. Only when Nani gives him the whale tooth does he fully accept the reality smdh.
I agree! If Nani hadn't given him the whale tooth, i doubt he would really care that his granddaughter was going to die out there. I mean he has wanted her to have never been born her or act like she wasnt there til he realized he royalty screwed up.
I disagree. He was in shock. His worldview had just been shattered and he was wrestling with his own failure of conscience. When he asked "which one?" it wasn't because he didn't care, but because his mind was reeling from what he had just seen and he couldn't focus. He knew which one without being told, but was hoping beyond hope that he was wrong, because that meant he had failed both as a leader and, more importantly, as a parental figure. As a father, in fact.
"I wasn't scared to die..." Makes me tear up every time. And then when she lets go of the whale in the end, I start crying. :'( Such a sad but beautiful scene...
@@oisinoregan9387 What do you mean how? Everyone is entitled to have their own opinion... If someone finds this scene beautiful, it's their opinion and they are entitled to have it...
One of the most chilling acts of the film. When we truly realize she was the one who was called to whale ride. Willing to take her own life to help the whale pikea and show her family the strength of judgement over not knowing who they were truly supporting as a god. It was her all along
This movie has so many themes, 'and a child shall lead them',multi-generational, traditional cultures vs 'modern', losing/finding oneself, failing to see what is right in front of us... and for everyone who has ever been told what she can and cannot be or do 'because she is a girl'.
... everything DeSantis, et al, in spite of these many prolifically accelerating auspice, is holding his finger in the dike of our humynkind's ineluctibly evolving consciousness.
Truly one of those "under the radar" great movies, though the actress was nominated for an Oscar. This scene was so moving once you see the scenes leading up to it.
Such a real true to life movie , has a lasting effect , just don't see enough , there's no doubt she's called to lead, the Queen reigns . How beautiful.

Why else would the grandfather treated the child like that! That's what they think of girls, not only in cultures like the one shown here, but also in modern western society. I was lucky to be born a guy, my cousin, not so lucky. She can't get over the fact that she was supposed to be a boy and thinks that her father will always resent her deep down because she wasn't born the right sex. Don't get me wrong - I feel for her, because she's my best friend, but I still feel so lucky to be born a man - it's amazing!
