In The Ways Of The Ancients, She Found A Hope For The Future.
A small Maori village faces a crisis when the heir to the leadership of the Ngati Konohi dies at birth and is survived only by his twin sister, Pai (Academy Award® nominee* Keisha Castle-Hughes). Although disregarded by her grandfather and shunned by the people of her village, twelve-year-old Pai remains certain of her calling and trains herself in the ways and customs of her people. With remarkable grace and courage, Pai summons the strength to both challenge and embrace a thousand years of tradition in order to fulfill her destiny.

I can’t believe it’s over 15 years old now. I saw this when it was first released and absolutely loved it.
L
@Laura Donnan - yeah I know should be shown in schools, both Australia and New Zealand
20 years faka
I cried like an absolute baby the first time I watched this years ago. Beautiful movie
What Scene made you cry?
@@jeffreykaufmann2867 - all the pain and the emotion. The grandfather loves her, but pushes her away because she is not a boy. When she finally proves herself, he is humbled
@@luisecawthorne1025 I didn't feel anything watching this film
@@jeffreykaufmann2867 - entirely your perogative. Any type of art or musical or physical medium can elicit an individual response, including sculpture. I'm not that wowed by the Mona Lisa, but like other Italian portrait painters like Perus Christus. Your non-response is as valid as my emotional one 👍🏻
That's why Banksy is so liked
I thought of this movies yesterday and remember feeling so touched by this film. I’m rewatching this today
Where did you watch? I’m from Brazil and can’t find it anywhere
This film brings me to tears everytime I see and hear it
The subject matter is such a fresh breath of air and the first nation representation is wonderful for new Zealand
I love it...brings me to tears every time.
LEX37 same here. I've seen it at least 10 times now and no matter how hard I try not to cry it still gets me😊
It was my first time watching it and the tissues were nearby... at the same time ,it's so beautiful !
In 2013 I chose this book The Whale Rider it's a set book we did in English lessons here in Kenya....the best set book I have ever read about Kahutia Terangi...
This is a movie you never forget. Gives me chills just to watch the trailer. Beautiful.
Why do I have the urge to cry watching this trailer...?
Manipulation by the trailer?
Because it’s such a beautiful and powerful story which moves us. I do too
@@Phoenix85006or by the whole film. There’s probably some story which moves you too
Done so well that it is easy not to see all the ways that film could have gone wrong. They nailed it.
I remember seeing this with my Dad when I was eight. It was the first movie that ever touched my soul and inspired me to be a writer. I remember sobbing and it being the first time I ever saw my Dad cry. It’s still my favourite movie 22 years later.
Shortly after the film was released and we saw it, we were in Honolulu coming home on the bus. There was a group of Maori boys who took up the whole back seat. They looked pretty rough.
I remarked on how I liked their face tattoos. That got us into a lovely conversation with them. They were the sweetest young men. They asked if we had seen the film. we had. They told us they
had been extras and that the home in the film was the home of one of their aunts. They were about to participate in the Moloka'i Ho'e, an outrigger competition. They were on a mixed canoe of
Maori and Hawaiian paddlers. The competition was the next day and their canoe placed first,
Wow Maori and hawian what power n strength
This one of the best movie i saw.....It got me to even cry of sadness and happiness
This is an absolutely beautiful film.

We are all here and we are ready !!! Love !!! And deep deep gratitude dear brave hearts !!! With you all, all the way !
I just finnished watching Whale Rider and its such a fantastic film...I cried my eyes out, 10000/10 would recommend watching it!
In my top 20 movies of all time. Its so good. That and Once Were Warriors
This is in the top 5 movies to make me cry buckets of tears every time.
One of my all-time favorites …….
the heart to heart pai and her dad had on the waka. Broke my heart.
Wasn’t this girl nominated at the Oscars for Best Actress?
If I remember correctly, yes.
I just watched it tonight and must say I find it wonderful... I think I have seen quite a lot of films from many countries and I knew only two from New Zealand. An angel at my table, which I sincerely did not like, and Once were warriors which I still watch from time to time. But this one was simply out of this world. Couldn't help wanting to slap the grandfather in the face for his complete lack of love for his grand daughter, but it is all in all a beautiful story. Please watch it.
Now you have to watch 'Boy'
Yes - HIGHLY recommend “Boy” and also “Hunt for the Wilderpeople”
difinitly hunt for the wilder people it is an amazing film
This should’ve gotten a re release!
It did. It's now on dvd, and blue-ray.
I'll have to watch this again it's been a while
this is the best movie of all time
Facts.

@@cjwilson7710 I bought it on ebay cheap as too good score 👍🏽
Appreciate it
good movie
I have seen the movie ages ago. It is a good movie. It does show both emotional, and physical suffering. See if you can spot that suffering. what steps you going to take to stop this types of suffering happening in real life to anyone in Maori race.
Masterpiece.
who else watched this movie from school and now have a worksheet to complete about it

My favourite film 🐳 🐳 🐳
🖤
Mulan Live 2020 brought me here.
How did Mulan bring you here? 😂 I haven't seen Mulan yet so... Yea
same wtf
I could be wrong, but I think it's because Whale Rider was directed by the same director for the 2020 Mulan remake, which is Niki Caro.
Why is Shout! Factory releasing this? Criterion Collection should be doing it tbh.
I loved this movie so much as a child. She has grown up to be a beautiful woman. I think she also played a role in Game of Thrones.
She was also the queen of Naboo at the end of the clone wars and unfortunately killed by the 501st troopers
Fez sentido Niki Caro ter dirigido o live-action de Mulan, quase o mesmo plot
Loved this movie, probably gonna watch it again. Seen it a couple times.....WHALE worth it? Did that 👆 on purpose 😁
How she didnt win best actress is a shame .
found this movie pretty quick for only partialally remembering 4 things about it. Australia, Culture, A whale and a little girl.
watched it once in school like 15 years ago...
now if I can just find the one that was. Native girl, wolves, Eveyone else either left or was killed. Possible little brother eaten by wolves, and then a rescue...
um bro..its not Australia lmfaoo its Aotearoa
Not even close to being Australia
Did yu find the other movie, what was it?
Честно скажу, первый раз увидел трейлер этого фильма, на dvd с черепашками ниндзя 2003 года.
😢
this movie is the second coming of jesus christ, this movie saved the life of my dads entire side of the family. my grandpa contracted aids, but once he watched this movie, he was cured. Not to mention the twist, who would’ve known she would ride a whale! Once when i was looking at lord farquad hentai with my cousin after we went shopping for lengerie together, I told them about this movie, and they instantly burst into tears just from hearing a summary. i have founded a new religion called Paikeaism, where we offer human sacrifices to a copy of the whale rider dvd.
Good Morning Jackie....#Bars
I LIKE WHALES
中学生の頃の英語の授業でこれを習った。
spoilers?
Mulan
Ultimate girl power movie!
Emily Bennington Please don’t cheapen it by labeling it that.
Girl Power ?? really ? when all her childhood she is being more of less ignored by her own grandfather because she is a girl ?? You have a strange idea about girl power...

Who else came here from snapchat?
Shit, can we over-edit this trailer a little more???
Der Film wirkt nicht ganz hetero... bissl gay, oder nicht?
Saçma sapan bir film tarzi
Great movie. Unfortunately the lead actress looks like my oldest daughter a lot, in more senses than one.
Its is therefor hard to watch for me.
What people should take away from this movie, is that changing a culture is extremely painfull and one shouldnt wish to do (much). It destroys people in many ways. That is the unspoken but huge downside to 'globalism', that forces its (non) values on all. Its no different in Zeeland, where i was born and raised and which world was entirely different back then, 60 years ago, as it is in New Zeeland. Even though our cultures differ, all cultures are sacrificed for an alledged ideologie that will never last.
Breaking up families is probably the most evil deed in this world. There is no justifying it.
This though was change through circumstance. When a culture stays fixed in the belief of only male role models, that's when it can ossify. Respect tradition, and pass on knowledge to the next generation
@@luisecawthorne1025
"This though was change through circumstance" > No, it isnt. The girl wants what she wants bc she is affected by western cultural sickness. This is portrayed for instance in the father not there, or mother and him having a drinking problem. It is actually mentioned in the movie that he thinks his parents are 'old fashioned' and he is obviously influenced by western diseases. So is grandmom up to some extent, which isnt deepened why, but wouldnt happen this way if she wasnt.
"When a culture stays fixed in the belief of only male role models, that's when it can ossify. " > Thats complete nonsense and precisely one of the root causes of western diseased societies.
You automatically assume equality is a value, while it clearly isnt. It was never intended as such either by the enlightened philosophers. That was a class struggle; nothing else. And btw it is exactly these on top classes that drive the woke BS, to divide people.
At the very least, changing what is male and female roles, is still very experimental, as no culture in all of human history ever did this. And its absolutely not looking good for 'progressives' here. Its also solely in the west. No one else wants this diseases, as they already saw what it caused in the west.
Another assumption you make is that keeping role models as they have always been, would somehow negatively affect development. Nonsense. The west is falling apart, while the more traditionalist states emerge on the world stage. Russia, China, etc. There is no benefit at all in changing the roles as they were. Only setbacks.
Even development itself, is automatically assumed and contributed to certain things, seemingly always a value. But that is equally untrue.
Plunging the entire west in poverty, starvation, wars, terrorism, etc is also progression to something else, but i wouldnt call it a value.
Fact of life is that things always change and mankind as a whole, progressed, but it is easily argued that we would have been better off as apes. So there is no universal value in progression. Any progression.
On top of that, things never progress the way you want them to. That is why young people are more 'progressive' and in their stupidity and lack of knowledge think they will improve the world, only to find out it didnt go in the direction they hoped. Which then turns them into conservatives. Older people always more conservatist, bc it is safer to hit the brakes after learning that lesson.
Thanks for your reaction btw ;]
@@StofStuiver - OMG what did you watch? Because Pai is the granddaughter of a chief and her twin brother who was supposed to lead died in childbirth. Her father left to go overseas because he was heartbroken & did arts & photography in Germany, he came home with a partner who was pregnant by him. Nothing to do with drinking or "western culture or the bollocks you're going on about
The mother is dead and "western cultural disease" is bollocks, influences yes, as a lot of smaller tribal cultures are affected by capitalism
@@luisecawthorne1025 Yea, thats also true, but since you seem oblivious as to how peoples live and used to live, you completely bypass the fact that this would never occur the way you prefer to see it.
Ergo, you are wrong. Go watch it again.
I hate this movie with a passion
