- WHALE RIDER TO HOLLYWOOD
Academy nominated actress Keisha Castle-Hughes was uncertain about her future after her breakthrough role in Whale Rider at the age of 12. Now, almost two decades later, she shares insights about her fascinating life both on and off the screen.
Her acting career has united New Zealanders, who take pride in watching Paikea, the young girl they all know, take on more significant roles, inspiring future actors and actresses of Aotearoa. Recently, we had the privilege of sitting with Keisha, where she talked about her humble beginnings, identity struggles, having a child at a young age, and the valuable lessons she learned during her time in the industry.
This is her story. Indigenous 100 - Keisha Castle-Hughes - Фільми й анімація
The story arc of Whale Rider follows Paikea's grandfather coming to realize that what is innate in his granddaughter all along; that she IS in fact the leader his people needs. Listening to this wonderful, insightful woman reflect upon her personal voyage from a Maori youth with only two choices, "learn a trade or get pregnant and live on the dole", to a mature adult with children of her own on a personal level and an advocate for her people and First Nations around the world on the global level, and what we see is someone that has literally become a real life Paikea. Bravo!

I heard you say Age and Time. Anyways arohamai im not very good at literacy lol MANA WAHINE
A true mana wahine 👌🏽
Jeez that was awesome. Kāore I tū atu. I would like to see more shows on whānau thriving w/o focusing on the struggles. I raised my daughter, alone, in a low socio-economic community, on the benefit while I put myself through uni at 35. Looking back We can both say we had a great life together, so much fun, so much love, we werent pov or broken, we were alive. Our brown stories do not have to be centred around the challenges of poverty.
Anyway, I really enjoyed listening to your whakaaro, Keisha. You're beautiful inside and out.
Ngā mihi nui ki a koe! We'll keep this in mind for future episodes and seasons ❤️
