  • This is my second underwater video of me attaching a Gopro to my crab pot. In this video, the Gopro caught a seal attacking my crab trap as it tried to go after the bait.

Wow, you should have done this years ago. It is clear that this trap door has a major flaw in its design, It is simply crab unfriendly.
I think a plexiglass door would work better.

It’s interesting to watch how smart dungies are… one crab trying to get in it sees another walk through the door and it immediately heads that way.. pretty darn cool thanks for sharing PK

That's pretty cool. I never knew crabs have a hard going through the trap door. Perhaps a solid door would work better so they won't get their claws tangled up. I liked the double teaming crabs that got in. Thanks PK

This is a very good point! Think I’ll to rig something up on my doors to make it easier for the crab to push in VS struggling to get past it, much harder to get in the I anticipated 12:56

I agree... underwater footage is very helpful, to see what's going on and how effective a style of trap is.

I learn two things…. Door design can be improved for easier entry, 100% of crabs come from left side because current flow from right to left (so does bait sense) crabs at other directions didn’t smell the chicken

What cracks me up is that the door on the far end is stuck open and none of them are using it. The last video I watched the door on the right was stuck open. Me thinks you need to address that and do something like what DHawk R. mentioned, maybe some clear plastic sheeting so the crabs can see through it and won't be shied off by an opaque door.

Ironic that a crab actually got that far door unstuck after more than 20 minutes. Pencil lead zip tied along the doors really helps them work better. Seconds before that seal arrived those crabs outside the trap sure scattered!! Great camera view. 👍🏻

Wow that sea lion is smart 24:01 trying to push the big doors open to unlock! This is why I always use plain chicken or marinate in crab fire

The part of the door that is acting as a hinge, if you continue bending it, so it goes all the way around, It won’t get stuck open like that.
Edit: Loosely bent around it of course. ☯️🙏

    Perch bait?
So... Here's what I think is happening:
    1. The pot is landing in a way that causes it to not sit flat on the ocean floor. With the sides slightly askew, the doors simply won't work. I would try mounting the PVC camera boom on the top of the pot. I think there may be enough space to do that and still allow the top door hatch to swing open - maybe even see if you can mount it to the top but zip tie it so it's on the inside of the pot?
    2. Those doors need weight.
Even without a PVC camera boom attached to my pot, the doors will actually swing open in a current that I may not perceive from up above the water... I cut pencil lead and attached it with three zip ties (tightly) to the horizontal bar in the middle of each door, on the inside of the door. I cut it a little shorter than the horizontal bar to ensure that it wouldn't impede the door from closing.
    Side note:
I got my limit of razor clams yesterday at dawn. Took me 1.5 hours which seems like a long time but... I had never done it before so I am giving myself some grace. I managed to only break two of the clam shells (pretty good for a newbie).
I also thought you'd get a kick out of this one...
I forgot to pack my jetty fishing rod & reel!!! So the plans had to change.
I DID have my crab snaring pole, reel & a few of my snares.
That sinking feeling when you've made it all the way out to the coast and forgot such critical part of your plans - haha!
The first cast off the jetty and I actually felt some funny vibrations on the line after just 2 minutes soaking. It was about 2 hours before high tide. I pulled in the snare and BOOM! Amazing 6.5" keeper!!! I took that as a sign to keep crabbing yesterday. I had sardine, some ling cod, and chicken gizzard in the bait cage. They LOVED that combo as I had crab on every pull in less than 5 minutes of soaking each time! That's never happened for me before.
The clamming had taken a toll on me and I wasn't feeling stable on the jetty so I went south a little bit for crabbing off the pier.
I DID manage to pack my crab rings and SMI crab pot. It was at that point where I realized I forgot the chicken!
Improvised with the rest of the ling cod carcass, some chicken giblets, sardine & even squid. I also made a fine mesh bait cage and that had some cat food in it.
All I can say is that my pots were full each time I brought them up and other folk's had none or very few (they were using exclusively chicken).
Interesting to note that the boaters who were crabbing caught their limits...
I was wishing I had a boat (as I do often) but felt pretty solid coming home with 5 dungeness!

Yes, very good points. I will try to mount it on top of the pot next time. The pencil lead is a good idea. I actually bought pencil lead from Bi-Mart the other day. Just gotta put them on the door. Congrats on getting that 6.5 incher. That's a nice crab. Take care.

Best rated? There's got to be a better way. I saw the vid with the circular trap. I live in North Bend Coos Bay. Thinking I could totally crab from the pier somewhere right? I'm a great cook. Crab is yummy & I should take advantage of living on the coast. Just moved here from Of clean Shores, WA actually. Grew up in Seattle.

@@lfaktore Got one 6.75" male from the jetty at Barview using snare baited with sardine, chicken gizzard, and a squid. Hit up the pier at the end of the Garibaldi marina for crap pot & crab ring soak time and caught 4 more keepers - one was a gauge buster. Many of the folks I talked to that had boats caught limits. For me I found that it was a lot of females during low slack tide and the minute that tide shifted, more males. But that was yesterday... Who knows what tomorrow or next week will be like?
