I love watching crabbing. I use to go crabbing with my sister years ago. We use to catch so many and have a great time crabbing together. Please keep the videos coming, I appreciate the footage.👀.
Nice big catches and a neat traps there ! The two larges dungeness crabs that I caught in the past measured 8.4" (21.3 cm). Ours have to be 6.5 " to be legal here for that type of crab. I am here on the West Coast of BC,Canada. You guys have a neat coast there too !
Amazon & Ebay--- especially ebay--- have been great for me to find lures sold out elsewhere or lead weights sizes and types my local mom & pop tackle shop don't carry. Also my local shop has 99% Danielson stock, so if I want to get some Gamakatsu, Mustad, or Owner hooks in a variety of sizes I need to shop online.
Bradley M yuuuuuup. SF here. Love Gus' and will support decades-old, family run store till i die, but yeahhhh the amount of Danielsons is disheartening.
I tell you what, if you were to grab a mud crab from the north of Australia like you're grabbing those crabs, you'd be losing some fingers. Lol. 👍👍🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
Looks like a great time. Wish I was close enough to try it and I love dungeness crab. Almost torture to watch these videos because I love seafood and live as far from fresh seafood as one can get. Great videos PK!
I love your videos. Great job ! Only one thing, I feel that as someone who influences potential crabbers, I think it's not the greatest that you hold the crabs by the front where the claws are.
I will buy one of these, try cutting a piece of plastic sheet and wire tie it under the bait trap so the bait does not lay in the mud or silt. this allows the scent of the bait travel outward. Nice video thanks for posting
Awesome 👏 I live in Minnesota and wish we had seafood like that here. Walleye, bass and pike just don't add up to crab 🦀. Why I stay in this state is beyond me. If I could sell my 10 acres and 4800+ square foot home I'd move in a heartbeat.
Mark Lumley MN rocks man. Born and bred. We have legit the best people in the country in the great frozen north. Get yourself some cray fish and do a boil. Oregon is great, but MN is much better. They're way up their ass libby out there, and this is coming from a pretty left leaning guy myself. Go spend some time out there before you decide to move out and I bet you'll like the people at home better. Eastern Oregon is more to my taste than much of the west. Portland is cool to visit but I'd never want to live there. Great example of a place that's way too libby. I never saw a single homeless person anywhere near my dinky MN hometown and Oregon was full of people that didn't want to work and freeload. Like I said it's a great state, but trust me MN is much better. Have family in Bend and have spent much time there.
Looks like fun! I live in Maryland and use similar traps but topless. We check them every 10 minutes or so and just use the centrifugal force of pulling the trap up to keep the crab in it. We also use trotlines of 1200' or less as a recreational crabber with chicken necks usually as the bait. I wonder how a trotline would work for you there or if you have any idea what a trotline is?
How do you cook your softshells? Here in Maryland we cut the face off, clean out the guts, dust them in seasoned flour using Old Bay or JO Seafood Seasoning generally as the seasoning. Pan fry in peanut oil for about 3 minutes per side generally based on the size. Lightly toast some potato bread serve with some tartar sauce, fresh garden tomato and some lettuce.
We cook the softshells the same way like the hard shells. Sometimes I boil them in Louisiana Crab/Crawfish boil with potatos and corn and lemon. Often times, clean the guts, pick the legs, break them into small pieces, and crack all shells, then I stir fry them with garlic, black pepper, and yellow onions - this is the best way I think and is super delicious.
The "escape hatch" are hand holds with one on both sides,. Some of those blue pots have a problem with the triggers not being fixed and they allow the crabs to shove the trigger aside and escape, the one you have the triggers look good.
Ive been landlocked all my life. All ive had are snow crab legs at Red Lobster and I love them but idk much about other kinds. I'd love to know some things... Which do you prefer...soft shell or hard? Dungeness or blue or stone crabs? These are terms i heard while watching crab videos all day 😊 thanks!
Cool video. Is there no requirement to close your trap with twine that will rot and open the lid if your pot gets lost in Oregon? I noticed you closed them with the twist ties.
Thank you. I take the crabs home for dinner, they are delicious. I can't sell them as I don't have a commercial license. Oregon is definitely beautiful.
Hi PK! I appreciate all the vids...I was wondering if you know of any places on the Oregon coast where we can catch shrimp? I’ve got a place near Netarts Bay but will travel.
I have multiple questions do you fined the round blue pots hold more crab and with the square pots would you prefer those over the blue round pots if you carried over the same features you like from the blue pot over to the square pots? Like the bait carrier and the doors? Because I fined those round pots are a complete pain in the butt to store
They are about the same, volume wise. They both have advantages, where the square ones are collapsible for easy storage. The blue ones don't collapse but I still prefer them over the square ones.
10 to11" is what I'd expect sandy bottom 80 ft of water you got juvinilles if you leave those alone and take 8" and over you'll always have 10to11 inchers when you find the honey hole that bunch of juvies will leave there for the sandy bottom where they bury themselves so look for that 80 foot sandy bottom somewhere around either end of a sandflat gave you a thumbs up for getting out there on that cold morning huh like you regret it ,that's the best
Interesting expressions used . "Jesus man , holy snap, oh my God, holy cow..." This man must be a religious fanatic or he lacks the effort to find better and richer vocabulary to express his excitment level, including............." Oh my God, I thought my wife was heavy!" Fascinating what a good catch of crabs does to a man.
Your squares would be a lot faster if you bought some marine grade snaps or collapsible rings or even carabiners. (Rock climbing rings). You wind the rope in and out of the edges, that takes time, that's why it takes you 5 to 7 minutes to build them.
Nice!!!! enjoying during corona virus thing happening, stay safe everyone.
I hope this Corona virus thing doesn't get too bad or anything
LOL..."and I thought my wife was heavy." PK, that was classic, funny. Hope your couch is comfortable. Great video!

I love crabbing at Charleston off the docks! Cannot wait to try in a boat! "I thought my wife was heavy, but this pot is heavy" HAHAHAHA
I live about 2 hours from there. Wow
Thanks for the video PK! Brings back memories of crabbing in Half Moon Bay, N. California in the early to mid 1980's! 👍😉
This guys got a air of comedy to his mannerisms. He's unintentionally funny and I like it.
Nice big catches and a neat traps there ! The two larges dungeness crabs that I caught in the past measured 8.4" (21.3 cm). Ours have to be 6.5 " to be legal here for that type of crab. I am here on the West Coast of BC,Canada.

I lived in Coos Bay for 3 years and never go to go crabbing---awesome to see video of people doing it...and such a sweet haul too. Jealous!
I just got back from a visit in coos bay n the crabbing was excellent
Thanks for the thorough review. I might get a Promar. My favorite is Protoco Slip Ring traps, also from Oregon. Love em!

I am glad I am not the only guy buying fishing gear on Amazon.

Austin Rutledge amazon, Walmart, cabela's, and ebay are my favorites
You in SF? Cuz I know Gus' has basically only Danielson.
Bradley M yuuuuuup. SF here. Love Gus' and will support decades-old, family run store till i die, but yeahhhh the amount of Danielsons is disheartening.
If it's from China IT WILL RUST OUT WITHIN A YEAR
Loved watching your video. Thanks for sharing.

Would like to hear you discuss boats sometime, PK. Bellingham, WA.
I even love the crayfish ..they look like baby lobsters..
I love your videos. Great job ! Only one thing, I feel that as someone who influences potential crabbers, I think it's not the greatest that you hold the crabs by the front where the claws are.
Im so envious of you west coast people, over here on the east all we have are the sucky small blue crabs.
I will buy one of these, try cutting a piece of plastic sheet and wire tie it under the bait trap so the bait does not lay in the mud or silt. this allows the scent of the bait travel outward. Nice video thanks for posting

Yes, I've used trotlines before. But not sure how it would work for crabs. You try to snare it somehow?
Wise man once said. Don't! hold crabs from the front -.-

one of the reasons i miss ORYGUN !!
Cool video. Do you have room on your kayak for pots like this ? If so, how many ?
Great video, and job!
Ok so I'm the only one fast forward to the crabbing part? because the beginning was just making me 😪🤷
Ive been landlocked all my life. All ive had are snow crab legs at Red Lobster and I love them but idk much about other kinds.

Thank you for the great work
i like how he just throws out the crabs
Cool video. Is there no requirement to close your trap with twine that will rot and open the lid if your pot gets lost in Oregon? I noticed you closed them with the twist ties.
Throwing back the small ones is simply called "Natural Resources Management".
This guy is good at getting bit 🤣

Every crab that didn't make the cut... now has brain damage. He throwin' the sh#t out of them crabs! LMAOOOO!!

One in their life time can go airborne. They have been waiting all of their life. Have you seen a crab fly upward before? Now you do:)
hahaha u right
First time watching your videos and loved them!! So do you take them home for dinner?? Or sell them?? And Oregon looks beautiful!!
Thank you. I take the crabs home for dinner, they are delicious. I can't sell them as I don't have a commercial license. Oregon is definitely beautiful.
Yep
Hi PK! I appreciate all the vids...I was wondering if you know of any places on the Oregon coast where we can catch shrimp? I’ve got a place near Netarts Bay but will travel.

Well done my friend.
Awesome video. Ty
Nice catch
they are babies compared to our Australian Mud Crabs mate, but, good catch.
Would you get in trouble if you kept all the crabs instead of throwing them back in the water?

Hey PK! Have you ever tried crabbing from the beach with a Crab-Daddy or Crab-Max? I've even done well with crab snares here in the Siletz Bay!
TheZacle I have never tried a snare but I tried to use sand shrimp to surf fish one time and caught a bunch of crabs at Barview Jetty
Where would you recommend a good crabbing spot closer to Washington? Thanks, love your videos.
Catches 30 crabs, only gets to keep like 2.
if you only saw the first pot, then yes

Thank you for sharing!
Why is he throwing away the smaller crabs?
In Oregon, the size limit is 5-3/4" *male* crabs only
