  • Today my Mom stopped by the house so we could do some early spring Garden dreaming!! I wanted to share some inspiration and some of my plans for gardening at my fixer upper house, this year and future years! We are talking all about landscaping for my house and a beautiful cottage garden and wooded garden!
Hey there! My name is Abby and I recently bought a MAJOR fixer upper house. I am SO excited to work on fixing it up this old house and turning it into my dream home. I can't wait to take you on this journey with me! I am planning to DIY as much as I can and learn so much about home renovations along the way. I am starting out totally clueless so I am sure it will be a grand adventure! Follow along on my channel if you want to see DIY projects, renovating a house on a budget, and I am sure a lot of craziness along the way! I'm just a girl with a drill and a dream.

The first thing I would do is finish the porch and then clean up around it and level the ground up

You can always start flowers and plants in large pots that can be moved when the siding or railing is being installed, so you have beauty in the meantime and then plant in the ground once the work on the house is completed. 😊

Once it's graded, stand back and just observe.
A lot of times a natural layout will just appear:-)You can see it in your minds eye.
Don't rush it,allow your creativity to design it for you.
Get an idea of the plants that do well in your area, how the sun falls, what time of day for the most sun and shade...and what kind of feel you are going for.
What plants are great for alongside a creek:-)
Nature is a natural palette for you to choose from.

Mark off your path, at least 4 foot wide. Then add your evergreen bushes for winter interest. Then put in bulbs and perrenials etc. Use some of the flatter stones laying around to mark off your path.

What I have learned from my many years of watching "This old House". Landscaping is the last step. You don't want to damage anything while siding and finishing the porch. I would pump the brakes. I would do an overhead sketch and go to a garden center.

Put your hard scape in first. (Sidewalk, arbor etc.) Amend our soil if needed. Then winter interest like evergreens. (Boxwoods etc.) Then put your perennial plants. Bulbs next fall. Remember to consider your light requirements for plants.

You have to rescue those daffodil bulbs, mark them with sticks and string, then when they have finished flowering dig them up. They look like old fashioned heritage bulbs, almost impossible to find and worth preserving for the front garden, What a fabulous drop. Loved this, your mum has so much knowledge local to the growing conditions, soils and climate.

Don't dig up the bulbs until after all the leaves have dried up. That's how the bulb gets reenergized by the sun for next years bloom (according to Laura from Garden Answer 😊)

In my opinion the first step is to layout all your ideas for the entire yard see how you like the flow, sight lines, and proximity for specific uses. Then prioritize your goals so that you have a plan. Another benefit of this is that you can take advantage of special plants that you come across or ones friends can share for propagation. Gardening is a journey and never a destination but you can have a road map so you know where you are going! Enjoy the dreaming and scheming.

Make a tentative master plan where driveways, patios and pathways and trees and vegetables will likely go. Think about irrigation and lighting for areas like around pathways and patios. Plant things that take time to mature like trees and shrubs. These are foundations for all the pretty flowers you want.

My thoughts for you. I live in Maine so I know about short growing seasons and the cold. Dahlias are pretty, but If you want to use them as perennials you have to lift the tubers and store in your basement over winter. As far as a tree over by the bay window, you don’t want something that will block your light for the other flowers. Reliance is a great hardy peach tree if you want a fruit tree. A mock orange would be nice near a window to appreciate the smell. The small blue flowers in the lawn are Glory of the Snow. When purchasing plants , make sure to check for plants that are invasive. The lily of the valley is one of those. Rose of Sharon is a no-no. Old fashion phlox is very invasive. You also mentioned magnolias which are beautiful but leave a mess under the tree when all the petals fall. You also want to look for plants that you love but the deer don’t. I didn’t mean to write you a book, but I hope it helps you make some decisions.

I watch your show as well as your mom's and dad's videos. I really enjoy watching you both. I don't mean to be negative about your mom's hair. I am a hairstylist and Brenda needs a hair makeover. I realize she is very busy with the farm etc. She has to take time out to pamper herself with a new hairdo and get rid of the outgrowing old color. I just took months to outgrow my hair to the natural grey color and I kept cutting the old color off. We think your mom and dad are great people.
A cedar hedge would look more natural to hide the look of that barn. Your mom's perennials are free and would fill the void while adding your choices of flowers to grow. You are doing a great job with your home and we can't wait to see the finished house.
    Take care and stay safe,
    Joan

Hi Abbie , ok , an idea for a climbing plant for the right of the bay window could be a wisteria, an excellent colour/ smell, and can be trained along the front of your porch, and just a note , dahlia here in the uk is pronounced day -Lee -uh .. that’s not in any way a criticism, just pointing it out 😊, gardening and choosing plants is a great way to put your own stamp on the landscape and is really up to you , no rules apply , just remember, if it doesn’t look right, usually it’s not 🤷‍♂️👍

Trees, do lots of thinking because this OLD GUY, 70 this year, has planted many over the years and they GROW! I love trees but make sure you know their potential because they can become an expensive issue later if you haven't planned right. As for one thing that comes to mind is RED BUD which is not red but they are beautiful color splash to any garden. By the way I love looking back and remembering the tree I once planted at 2 feet tall oir 6 feet tall is now 40-50 feet tall! Knowing that I planted that and seeing it mature over the years is just amazing. Even if you ever move a drive by seeing what you planted or designed in time will feel very special. Your doing a great job just be careful because if those trees are planted and not planned for lighting will become an issue for other plants and yes wires as you noted and structures. Kudos to you and by the way you have very special parents.

you may want to take down the Christmas lights before you start putting in the landscaping, start easy this year. Hydrangeas are beautiful, old-fashioned, country garden plants. My grandmother's used to have blooms the size of dinner plates. They were gorgeous. You might put some around the side of the dining room window because they can get large.
marigolds help keep mosquitoes away from your door
irises are also very prolific and come in a rainbow of colors, pretty around trees
    azaleas would be pretty, too
wait on planting around the house until you complete the exterior, start small with the front of the porch for now

So look up shade loving plants and full sun one ,too. I have divide my Hibiscus this season to replant around in my other flower beds . Hibiscus have saucer size flowers on them that bloom and die the sameday but it will keep doing this until fall . Last year my plant had 7 to 8 buds on each stem . An if you buy any make sure its not a tropical Hibiscus or it will not mahe it in the winter . An to control weed use good Landscape fabric .

I like Wisteria as a pretty privacy option.
Your ideas are stunning. I use the app Picture This to identify plants. If you click cancel at the top right corner when using, you won’t have to pay for a subscription but you have to do that every time. I’ve found it quite useful and it’s saved me from grabbing poison oak and sumacs thinking it was Ginseng.
Don’t overwhelm yourself with landscaping. I like a lot of Brenda’s suggestions.
I too tend to purchase plants based on the different foliage. I am more cline to get plants that are perennial and will only plant annuals if they are self seeding.
Whatever your design layout to be, your property will be so beautiful.
    Excited for your adventure.

A couple of thoughts for your gorgeous property. First it's super soaking up knowledge from your lovely mom as I did with my own. Start drawing up plans that have a cohesive look or areas of outdoor rooms leading into each other. A living fence to screen off that barn is something you can always put up and then pull out shrubs and move them elsewhere and they might stand up better to wind. And there may be a clematis that you like that can grow up into another shrub. remember they want cool shaded feet but sun above that they will reach for.
Think evergreens as well as deciduous shrubs. If there are any botanical gardens in your area you can take a trip with your mom to get other plant pairing ideas etc.
Remember through all of this the amount of work certain plants require and some that require less. There are different mock orange and some get lovely and tall and the scent can be divine. Also think grasses which can be fillers or swaths of movement in certain areas. And if you wait to cut them back til early spring they will give your garden winter interest. Keep in mind planting more native plants than non-native. You will have more bugs and wildlife utilizing them. Hybridized plants may have no nutrition for the native critters. If you have a State Agricultural Extension Center nearby you can ask them about what does well in your area and they may have lists to give to you and steer you away from problem plants. Since you will be planting beds with certain needs re sun/shade think about that and that will help you to decide on a few trees and their placement and lastly I don't know if you have looked into burying the electric power from the street but if it's not terribly expensive or you have someone willing to dig the trench you will love having had that done in the long run. I did that bringing mine about 130' from the street. Yikes I've been long winded!!! Your house and grounds will be stunning!

Suggestion - off to the right side of the house, you mentioned in previous videos, there would be a retaining wall there and some steps to get down to the lower level, for basement access. I would put an arbor trellis to indicate where the steps start, it would look good, and another place to grow a flowering vine. I'd also put a short picket fence from the arbor trellis, going to the right, out to the end of your yard/property line, can plant in front of the fence as well.
#1 - establish the walk ways, where they will be going across the front to the front steps, from the driveway. Plant between the walk way and the porch. You can add more as each season begins.
#2 - establish the walk way down the left side, from the front walk way to the side door steps and plant between that walk way and the porch.
And....the huge rocks in the back, I'd incorporate them into the design of the gardens, great focal points! I'm jealous, in Florida we don't have large rocks like that in my area, they have to be trucked in and are very expensive to purchase, sold by the lbs
Those large chunks of concrete, could be made into a patio/sitting area, just level them out. Would make a rustic one, but it's free and materials are right there available, use what you have.

some of the larger nurseries will have contacts to people for a small fee that will come to your house and meet with you. They know the weather of your area and what plants do well and can do you a garden blueprint of plants and trees and you buy your things as you can afford and yse the blueprint to guide you where to place and space the plants. I did this in Texas once and it was very helpful, you just have to let them know you will be doing the work yourself...

Put some container plants up against your porch. When they stop blooming, switch them out with something that is blooming. You could still make borders with plants but for care, choose something that is easy to grow and easy to replace. You will spend more time weeding than you would care to. Hanging baskets on the porch rail? it might be wise to go to a local garden center and tell them what is available in your area. And make your choices from that. Instead of picking out a plant that would not be a good match for your area or soil. Save yourself some time and money on a plant that plant that wouldn't work in your area.

I have a Jane Magnolia in front of my house, anchoring a corner within the actual garden bed. It's about 15-20 ft. tall and starts blooming in the spring, with sporadic reblooming throughout the spring/summer season. It does lose its leaves in the late fall/winter. Beautiful and manageable structure. I'm in North Carolina, zone 7b. I liked your mom's idea of a natural border fence between your property and the next rather than an actual fence in the front/side yard. You could plant some nice evergreen trees like a row of Leyland Cypress or a row of Arborvitae, interspersed with some nice flowering shrubs. I think it's nice to think about framing in your garden background or backdrop for all of the beautiful flowers you want, with evergreen shrubs so that you have something green year round, even in colder months when everything else has died back. Then focus on perennial flowers that come back each year, grow bigger, and multiply. I can't wait to see it all unfold! So excited for you! :)

Hi Abby and Brenda! I think those wildflowers are squill! They come up on their own and i like how they brighten the yard! Your plans and ideas are so fun and exciting! My advice is research the pruning maintenance of shrubs and roses so you know what you are going to have to do. I can't wait to see it planted up!

A raised bed built under the bay window would mean you can see the flowers through the window. Or maybe you could persuade William to build you a large wooden trough throw some smaller logs in the base so you don't need to fill it with so much compost. Also re trees remember to check where it casts a shadow cause that will effect any plants in the shadow. Happy gardening. 💞🤗🍀

Giant importance🎉 remember to include a lot of deciduous plants and ground covers (some ground covers bloom all summer but stay Green in the winter) you have a long winter so having lots of plants that stay Green in the winter, could make you very 😁 and then you're beautiful color scheme flowers planted all around them. Winter interest in an area like yours is primary and key if you love gardens😊

I love your color ideas. Climbing roses would looks so good. I have learned that sticking to my growing zone and using native plants as much as possible keeps my work load down in the end and the plants happy.I live in 4b in North Dakota. I love having evergreens that keep me happy and stay green even in our long winters. Whatever you dont want to look at I would plant vines and or fast growing evergreens like cedars. Maybe just talk to the local garden center or extension center. Bleeding hearts do really good in my spotted shade and I love looking at them. Sedums fill in around spaces and some come in the colors you like and turn even darker in the winter. Im exited to see it all in the next few years.

A pergola fence with some wisteria would be a great fence to hide the building next door while still keeping it open for light. Can plant some flowers in front of the fence.

Abby, I know you are going to hate this comment…but you are not ready for landscaping around the perimeter of your house. I would finish the porch floor and exterior trim so you have a useable space. Add color and flowers with hanging baskets and containers that you can reuse and move. Figure out where the winter snow load exits the house roof so you don’t plant shrubs underneath. Grade off the front yard so you know your terrain. Mark out your front door pathway and driveway so you don’t plant and then have to move plants again. But this year I would pick out an ornamental tree that is really hardy and plant in an appropriate spot to commemorate your progress and achievements. I know you are excited, all in good time.

I worked fo greenhouse for 7 years and a nursery for around 3 years. Learned I like mostly planting things that will come up every year without having to be taken up and stored in the fall or replanted every year. Look for what grows best or is adapted to your area. Consider the care any plant will require or the needs re upkeep. Looks like the front of your house will require plants that love and do well in lots of light. Oddly, one of rhe plants I got the most compliments on was one I grew against a chain link fence. It was from seed, and was double bloomed hollyhocks. they reseeded for a couple of years in a row, but eventually died out altogether, which is typical. Just do your research on evey plant that catches your eye, and decide how much time you will or want to put into maintaining them. Your Mom should be a vwey good guide in this department. One idea for your property, would be to consider planting a row of blooming .(non fruiting) trees that follows along the lenght of your drive Wouldn't it be pretty to see spring trees blossoming along one side of your drive? Keep in mind their mature size when planting so they are not too close together or close to the edge of the drive. Keep in mind, the faster growing a tree is, the softer the wood, and the shorter their longevity. Do not plant Bradrord Pear trees. They are fast growing and tend to have a lot of breakage due to storm damage. Dogwood, (pink?), or redbud would be pretty. Research your choices and understand the pros and cons of each.

I just wanted to add that if you go to the garden center every month, you will be able to get plants that pretty much bloom throughout your entire season instead of just going one time and buying everything. you want interest for all four seasons.

One idea you could think about is getting the shrubs you want to put in your first row in front of your porch is to put them first in your small upper garden for now. when you get your ground all worked up in front of your porch you could transplant your shrubs to where you want them. That way they could get a good start and you could get them now. Just a thought. Love your videos and have watched them from the first. Take Care

First thing is put in a sidewalk and step, for your weather I suggest cement. Then look from the inside out, you will get a different perspective. The fence to hide the barn or arbovate would be perfect. Roses take a lot of patients and care. Plant some evergreens for a base. You are going to love gardening, but it takes time. Love your mom.

My faves are purple lilacs, trumpet vines because hummingbirds love them and will grow on your fence, alyssum is a pretty ground cover. Iris, even though they don't last long unless you staggered planting times (I heard). Peonies because my mother-in-law loved them along with snap dragons. My older sister loved yellow so of course yellow roses. But my mom just loved roses. Then some pretty greenery. Those are my staple plants then just what ever caught my eye. Oh and chives make for a pretty plant with a pretty purple flower
and apparently helps with bug control?

I think talking to a garden expert is a great idea. Ask for native plants for your area. You may want to move the daffodils to a safe area while you’re still working on the house. If you decide on climbing vines definitely use a trellis and don’t put near the house where it may grow on house and damage. Research if you do bushes and trees as the root system can damage your foundation or your water system. Don’t block your windows with plants either. Cherish your light.

You might consider a row of fast growing evergreens/tall trees on the property line and to hide the barn. They self mulch while cutting down on weeds and upkeep - also providing great shade. Your sidewalks are 'no brainers' with all the flat stones you have, meticulously placed and bordered with beautiful plants. I'm not sure what you guys use for mulch beds but pine straw keeps weeds down longer and looks great. Looking wonderful mom and Abby!
