- In this video i will be showing you guys how a engine coolant temperatures works and how its related to your radiator fan..This ect sensor is a normally close loop . I make this video as simple as i can so that DIYers will easily understand the connection of the ect to the radiator fan .And also this diagram is base on a non ECU controlled ECT ...

Thanks buddy. I try to google how it work. "It measures coolant temperature" yeah i got that from the name. This is what i wanted to know generally how it is supposed to work. Thanks again
Thank you so much for giving detailed information by circuit diagrams

Great vid.I did this to my '97 camry the ther day.using the normally open temp sensor.its not ideal if the sensor breaks i have no fans.but its working for now.
Very informative.. I've learned alot from this video..

Good explanation, thanks bro , u solved my problem
Happy to help
Very awesome description. My issue is that when it gets to 90C, the fans aren’t kicking on. I’ve gone through 3 different ETC sensors, and I know the whole system works besides the ETC sensor because when I disconnect it, the fans kick on. 04’ SRT4 Neon for those wondering. 😄 I’m to the point where I either wire some kind of coolant temperature adjustment relay that bypasses the ECT, or just leave it disconnected with code 118. 😅
Before someone says something, I’m just kidding about the disconnected sensor. 💀
the point in this video is that at around 90degree celsius ur ECT sensor continuity should open or close so make sure that there is enough hot coolant that boil ur sensor in order to work so check the design of ur car like how far ue thermostat into ur ect sensor hows ur coolant is it circling properly is there no air on the system if everything is good then go to wiring etc...
Did you resolve your problem with your car?
@TheAutomotiveKid. Hi, did you resolve your problem with the fan not kicking?
Awesome presentation
Thanks a lot

Hello sir, am glad to see ur channel. Pls I want to confirm if my Toyota Camry hybrid is ok. Am not a technician guy. I just noticed my radiator fan will not work on 84f but immediately I put on the car AC the fan pick up instantly. Plus I don’t no if it working above 90f but I will keep an eye on it. But my car temp gauge is always at the middle so it not overheating. Pls sir ur advise is needed. I don’t want to take it to a mechanic bcos here in Africa no trustworthy person even when ur car is ok they will still tell u d wrong thing just to take money from ur pocket. Pls ur advise sir !! Tanx
every car when ac is on rad fan is on thats normal

thank you my question is answered

Great explanation. If my coolent temp sensor is bad would it disconnect power from my radiator fan. Thats the problem I am having. My car starts out with fan running then at some point the fan stops causing over heating. I am getting no codes at all.
Thank you for the information sir. Regardless of opened or closed loop, the sensors should have about 2000 Ohms right? If closed loop sensor does not show about 2000 Ohms, can i assume it is bad sensor and needs to be replaced?
I rather do this procedure .Checking resistance sometimes may fail especially if ur sensor malfunctioning when its hot
Aclarame algo si te es posible.
Cuando el auto esta frio,¿ ese sensor esta con el circuito cerrado, es decir, mantiene continuidad en la linea negativa y esta se interrumpe al llegar a unos 90 grados que es cuando el circuito habre?

Thanks so much for the knowledge you shared to us..my car is giving me same problem what do I do to make the fan work properly,do I remove the socket completely or change the fuse?
get a wiring diagram for proper diagnosis
Hello thank for your clarification on the diagram. i have a question would like to ask you. i have a niss -xterra 2007 and the temperature heat is going up when i step on the gear 45mph. When i first start the engine the radiator fan didn't come on until 20mins latter the fan is on but the temperature gag still going up when the speed on 45mph. Please advise. Very appreciated so much!
you need a scanner theres no way you can diagnose ur truck without checking some data on a scanner ..monitor ur gauge if it reaches more than halfway and ur rad fan is not on then theres a big chance ue ect sensor is failing but again u need to scan ur car brother
Very educative!
I notice that my Honda civic 2006 cooling fan does not switch on when ect2 sensor is connected ( i.e when both ECT1 and ECT2 are connected) but switches on at 96 degree Celsius when ECT2 sensor connector/plug is removed. what could be the reason/cause? I have experimented this on different occasions and noticed even at 98-degree celsius - 100-degree celsius, the colling fain doesn't switch on when ECT2 sensor is connected. I have replaced the ECT2 sensor with OEM but the issue still persists.
Do you have any clue about how I can resolve this issue?
i dont know what sub model engine size of ur car but base on my prodemand ur ect is controlled by pcm and also is connected to ac pressure switch u might take alook on to those concern area before replacing parts
thanks for explaining it . i have an issue with my 2.0 mazda engine. i rewired a new relay but i cant get it to cycle right. im using a 4 pin relay. and does my main relay also power my AC fan or is it na ?
ac fan should had a different relay or another relay but for mazda i had to look it on its wiring diagram first
Thank you

My Toyota Tercel fan relay has only 4 prongs (no 87b) , when I start the car where does the positive (+ ) charge go since there's no 87b or open loop circuit?
thanks bro
Welcome
Thanks, I'm still confused with mine...I have a 99 Toyota Rav 4 which the radiator high speed fans are not coming on as temperature rises past 220 deg F. The low speed fans will come on if I turn on the A/C. The high speed fan will only come on if I disconnect the "Radiator fan switch sensor" I replaced this sensor initially thinking it was bad, but still doesn't work. I then replaced the relays, still not working. And finally I replaced the "Coolant Temperature Sensor" and it still doesn't seem to be coming on. I did notice after replacing the sensor with an aftermarket that the readings on the gauge cluster are lower than before if that means anything. Any ideas what to try now? I'm frustrated and lost with what to do now. The only way I can get the car to cool down when driving is stick the heater on hot and fan on high to lower the temp gauge...UGhhh
check your thermostat it might stuck closed or ur rad fan switch that u bought is aftermaket try the genuine one
Fest thanks so mach bro what is Quality car fan
no problem
Very informative sir. Just want to ask if this car is ECU controlled? And how can i know if my ECT sensor is normally open or normally close? I own a lancer 1997 btw. Thanks. More power
a normally open sensor when unplugged ur radiator fan will not kick on a closed sensor when unplug the radiator fan will turn on..mostly non ecu controlled car are those old car carburated car
My 1995 nissan 240sx does exactly the same what do you think the problem is? I replace the sensor already.
The point i got is the temp sensor is normally closed and giving negative field to the relay so make it un_active
Thanks
No problem
it explains my situation well in which I pull out sensor, the fan activated, but why there is disconnection when the temperature rises? I notice that when the temperature increases, the resistance between pins of temperature sensor decreases.
then ur sensor goes bad during hot temp
My car is the same problem can you guys suggest what is the solution for this problem?
Very good explanation i actually have a problem my fan runs constantly when start up car i have replaced ect sensor and relays but it still runs any idea what it could be .
it depends what car u have what design u have
@@asianmechanicguy6483 it's a Chev utility takes two pin temp sensor
Sir in your description above should we say the problem is the sensor? if not operating on its own?
Thanks. I have a question the engine temperature sensor. Is the same as coolant sensor switch?
Having problems with my civic 2003 fans are not working.
I changed the thermostat coolant switch sensor. I homped from the switch and fans worked.
and looks like relays. Are good and fuses. I don’t know what else to look for? Any help please.
u need to know where the ect located and it warms up above 90degree celsius in order that sensor to close so that ur fan will kick on..and u can check that using a obd scanner that has a data stream or live data or u can use a infrared heat gun reader otherwise if at above 90degree celcius temp ur fan didnt kick on ur sensor is faulty even though its brand new buy genuine parts
Thanks
I have a 2001 nissan xterra I am going to change from clutch fan to electric fan can i connect the hi fan negative cable to the temperature sensor which is controlled by the computer instead of acquiring a temperature hit sensor to place it on the radiator????
thats pwm pulse width modulation input coming from ecm ill upload videos of that in the future
thanks man I want to make the 2 fans works on high speed all time what I have to do ?
make single control wire to both rad fan
sorry im not good in spanish but focus on ur ect sensor unplug and plug ur connection to check if u had normally close or open sensor around 90 degreecelcius above ...ur rad fan should turn on if not then ur ect is bad or the coolant is not hot enough to warm up ur sensor ..check the location of ur sensor if closed to thermostat andcheck ur thermostat too it might slightly open
Wait please, my 2013 impala stated running the fan soon as I started the engine, so I unplugged the connector to the sensor to see if the fan would stop running, but didn't stop running , so I connected a new sensor to the connector with out installing it and the fans kept running, does the sensor have to be grounded? Also I get a warning that says engine hot a.c. off
in that case you need a wiring diagram i think ur fan is grounded thats why its on all the time..we need to know if its a ground switch or power switch close loop or open loop sensor
My Honda has a coolant fan switch? And a coolant temperature sensor? I replaced cooling fan switch which reads coolant and triggers fan, I thought, the cooling fan isn’t coming on so should I replace the coolant temperature sensoralso ? Because I can keep my car from overheating if the ac is on because the cooling fan stays spinning. If I turn that off my car begins to get hot and my operating temp appears to be right under half
unplug one of them then run then scan it that we you distinguish which is which
Ok i have a 97 toyota camry 2.2 and my fans do as they are supposed to do but when the car is at operating temperature and i turn on my heater/ a/c the fans start up and when this happens the idle goes way down and almost stalls and then idle fine, the fans will stop when i turn off the heater, i am lost and wonder if there is something wrong? And idea and advise would be appreciated, thank you.
check alternator maybe it cant hold too much load
@@asianmechanicguy6483 so its normal for the fans to start up when i turn the heater on, i will check the alternator, thank you
it depends where u put ur heater selection if its on defrost say whindshield fan will kick on try only on face selection fan shouldnt kick on ..but if still kick check for coolant leak ur engine might always hot all the time which result the rad fan to kick on
do you have 2015 camry 4 cylinder fan coolant diagram ? my fan do not come on checked everything still have no power to fan
Hello, my 07 nissan maxima second speed radiator fan only working when my water tank is empty, relay still ok, i replaced new coolant temperature still not working on normal ride and the water is boiling in the tank, what should i check/do next?
yours is a ecm or module controlled i did to know how many wires going to the sensor and radiator too its kinda different approach bro
Of course, if the Relai also fails, it can cause a problem identical to that of the probe.
This is interesting but l thought the engine temperature was being measured by this sensor too. Is that not correct? Anyway good video.
Excellent
Thank you so much 😀
Thanks, but i have a clarification to make. Questions that needed answer sir. I have a ford eco sports automatic. That when i start the power button the engine and radiator fan activated and it turns to high speed fan that cannot control even if the temperature is in very low and when i off the engine, it will deactivated. But if i start the power switch w/out turning on the engine, the fan will still activated even if i turn off the a/c button. Pero yung aircon temperature walang problima, yung fan lang sobrang High kahit nasa pinaka low na. Sana masagot mo sir yung tanong ko, especially sakin na hindi pa familiar sa mga cars. Thank you.
ur problem is blower motor resistor my video din ako nyan nissan frontier hanapin mo nalang sa channel for maintindihan mo
Those this system connection work same for Dodge Journey ?
no they have different system
Hi. My ford fiesta the radiator fan comes on when temperature is 111 degrees Celsius and goes off when the temperature reduces to 110 degrees is this normal because I feel it comes on very late. Any idea
its a little bit late late change ur ect sensor anyway there not that expensive
And where do you connect the temperature gauge to see the engine temperature on an old cvh ford
that would be for another video my friend
What is the connection with the ac and coolant sensor and fan?
I would assume the temperature sensor is normally open and it closes when it reaches high temperature and connect the poles giving continuity to send signal to relay . Isn’t it ?
thats correct
I'm not getting power to my coolant temp sensor at the radiator. It show -40 on my scan tool. I've tried 3 sensors. I do get a ground on one side when I test it with my power probe. The engine coolant temp sensor on the head does read normal. I've change every relay just in case. I've even tried a new connector. any help Thanks

Hi
I have the same problem on my qashqai j10 the fan doesn’t work, it just works when I disconnect the sensor? Is that rele error or sensor ? Pleas help me
base on what you said wiring interity is ok cuz when u unplug the sensor wire the fan kick on so its normally close system but i assume ur rad fan is ecu controlled ...and base on what u said ur sensor is faulty so change it
@@asianmechanicguy6483 thanks for the answer
Is this the same as cylinder head temperature sensor
not really some cars like chevy has 2 temp sensor one located on the thermostat housing and one located on the radiator ..i had one video just check it out ita a chevy cruze it might help u about what u looking for
Bro i have a problem with my lancer i have 2 fans it only works when i turn on my AC. But when i turn off my AC it will turn off both fans. Even my sensor reaches 90. Degrees fahrenheit the coolant. Can you give me some advice ? Salamat bro!
get a wiring diagram find out if the design is close loop or open loop positive controlled or negative controlled... backprobe the control wire for ur radiator fan check if theres a power coming into the rad motor fan
Why do 2003 Pathfinders 3.5 engine overheat? Is it the other thermostat under the intake manifold? Thank you
i think the design or location of waterpump its inside the timing chain cover so couldnt notice right away when its leak it wiil just fix in ur engine oil
Interesting, but I'm curious about your fan relay. In a typical relay, both terminal 87s are supplied with 12V once the relay is switched on since they are just parallel circuits. If that's the kind of relay that is used, your illustration is for a normally open temperature sensor.
it depends how u use 87 and 30 usually 85 and 86 is ur coil these time 86 is positive when key is on then 86 is ground which connected to ur ect normally close so 85 and 86 is always engage bec of normally close ect bec of that 87 is push to 87A wherein ni circuit is connected on it ...once ect open up after 90degree celcius theres no more ground on 86 so connection on 87A will go back to 87 which is connected to 30 and 30 has constant 12v and that 12v will flow into 87 going to ur rad fan...trick of this is the flow of the 12v where it came from and what connected it ...its confusing but foloow thw flow of current 12v
@@asianmechanicguy6483 thank you for your clarification.
Thanks , What is the diagram of a fan that works when the air conditioner is on or when the engine temperature is high?
Fan is not working when heating up. Also when i put direct fan with battery it works. What would be the problem?
check ur rad fan module check for fuse relay ect
in easier term. the sensor like a thermostat. the circuit will be continuous when reach a certain temperature. the relay is kinda hard to explain. better look at better relay picture like fog lamp relay. same rules
thats right my freind circuit will be continous when reach a certain temp wow atleast someone understood it
Good day why will my 2006 shevrolet spark engin fan then runs as soon as I start the car even when the engin is cold.
im not sure about the design of that car but it should be like that especially if ur rad fan is electronically ran by ecm
Where do I add bypass switch if I want manual overide
i dont do by pass for rad fan
I changed temperature sensor in my Mitsubishi minicab but radiator fan continuesly working when i start the engine in the morning .
unplug the the wire then key on check for voltage 1 wire or connection should have a 5v and 1 is 0v ...then let me know what voltage u get i need info about your car i need to know if you rad fan is non ecu or ecu controlled .. pwm or conventional type rad fan
My 96 Subaru Legacy does this. Ignition on and the fan starts. Also engine is hard to start from cold. Believe it relates to the temp sensor (ecu type) the sensor has been changed but the fan and cold start still remain. Help! Please 😩
What is the solution?
Do we need to change the sensor?

My 2001 chevy cavalier is overheating because cooling fan is not working at all
I already put new ECTS and new radiator
I checked all the fuses and relay with test light
Cooling fan only works when I use jumper wire in relay terminals 30 and 87
Can anybody help me
so you had no input going to ur relay try to unplug ue ect connection connect them together if ur rad fan didint work u had a wiring problem ect wire going to ecm and ecm input to to the relay ..this is just a guess as i didnt diagnose or check ur car personally
@@asianmechanicguy6483 With Ignition off engine not running
I had power to the relay checked with test light
After I put a new ECTS with engine hot I turned on the AC and cooling fan was working
so meaning ur radiator fan is working now in theory what makes ur rad fan to work is ur ect after it reaches a certain temperature so run ur car if you had an obd2 scanner monitor ur car temp and at 90 to 100degree celcius ur rad fan should kick on otherwise if not the theres a problem from the ect wire going to ecm and ecm wire going to that realy which gives ground signal to activate that relay and that relay will activate ur rad fan to works...
Kulang demo. Sana pati ung papunta sa gauge ng temp.
anong gusto mong malaman sa temp gauge kabayan
