This is a special singing technique actually quite close to opera singing. Instead of using your vocal chords, you use the false vocal chords. Best thing is to take professional lessons for training this. The golden rule is: If it hurts, you're doing it wrong. But it is actually quite common in metal, but Tatiana can go really low. There are other singers who can do it. Even Floor Jansen from Nightwish.
You are mostly correct but I would add that your aryteniod cartilage also helps make to distort it. Also, with fry screaming the vocal cords do also create a little bit of the distortion. But it is not by phonating it by the vocal cords being close to closed and air passes through the slit making a buzzing/static sound.

Question: "How does one discover they can growl/scream like a metal vocalist?" Answer: One sings along with their favorite metal song(s) and discovers it accidentally. Once discovered, one usually hones their ability into a instrument, like Tatiana did...
Not really. Anyone has the potential of doing it. It is just a matter of learning the biology and the techniques. I am a vocalist and I took me months to learn to do it and a year or so later I am still learning how to manipulate the basics to do different styles.
@@Gregorycrafter but thats the same as clean singing, anyone can learn to sing but nobody will sound the same, thats a minsconception with growls? Yes it can be learn as any other technic but that doesnt mean youre gonna sound like this or other great growls in music, in fact Tatisna didnt need to learn to growl like you said, she has it and just figured herself how to make it consistent without lessons
Exactly! I discovered I could do this long before this type of singing came to the forefront of metal. Just singing in my car one night, and messing around with my range, and it just happened. While it can be learned, having a natural ability gives you a definite head start. I have Hypermobility Syndrome, and Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, and I have no idea whether that was my natural inroad to being able to manipulate my voice in different manners.
Younglings, here’s some info for you: Tatianna, the vocalist, calls herself a shy introvert and a geek, but she also has a gift of music. She learned younger in her life that she could make the growl sound, and rest is history. Now, she has a stage persona, but it is a talent she had to work hard on, because without the persona, she says she could never get on stage. As for the growl, the muscles she uses to make that sound are the same muscles required to sing Opera. That is why she can transition between her sweet voice and the growl, then back again effortlessly.
Ok OK... I have to admit it... my guilty pleasure is looking for new reactions to this song. The shock value is priceless! I have watched dozens of reactions and your reaction was among the best. Genuine shock. A couple of folks smelled something was up and that cushioned the blow. Your reaction couldn't have been any more genuine if she'd literally sprouted horns and wings! Awesome stuff. Literally made my day. I had a unfair advantage when I first saw the video. I'd heard Jinjer before and I also had seen a young lady more than 10 years ago that fronted a metalcore band ( these kids were like 18 years old ) and she put most of the guys that played that night to shame. It does require technique to do the growl like that and not hurt yourself. I can do it but I already have a really deep voice and lots of experience adding grit to my tone. But I could not do that for a whole evening because I have not mastered the actual technique. And truthfully, that is because I don't find that style all that appealing. My personal surprise with this song is her natural voice. Super smooth. Many of the female metal singers ( not all ) have a bit of rasp in the their natural voice. BTW I am a musician and once upon a time I did it professionally.
@@Gregorycrafter I did some lead vocals but mostly backup. Started as a drummer and became a bassist because I got tired of nobody doing my songs. LOL I've used my "demon" growl for effect on several songs over the years. My personal favorite use was when I made the little brother of a girl I was hitting on flee in terror. I thought she was going to hyperventilate she was laughing so hard. In retrospect it was cruel and way over the top but hey when you are a young man and somebody is cramping your style... you know. lol
Are you kidding? Having breakfast for dinner is the best!! I couldn't wait to see your reactions once the song kicked in, and it was well worth the wait. Pretty terrifying, huh?
Hey guys! Nice reaction lol. You guys seem to be interested in how Tatiana does her "growls" so I'll do my best to explain. What she does is called "False Chord Scream/Growl" it's a very safe way of doing growls, without hurting your vocal chords as much. From what I know though, it is very hard to do, and takes a lot of time and dedication to perfect. In addition, Growling/Screaming is basically a vocal technique mainly used in metal music to provide more power in the music. Hope this helps!
Not everyone can scream but training and vocal fry exercises help one to know one’s own proficiency with such vocal work. I’m actually a screamer but I use my screams primarily for my voice acting hobby rather than music, so I still have a pretty good knowledge of what I’m talking about.
lol you got to the Jinjer reaction already? Man, be prepared for your channel's popularity to skyrocket! I enjoy your videos. You have some great kids - insightful and entertaining!

Check out this video if you want to learn some basics of vocal frying and this way you could build up some endurance and tolerance in you vocal cords: ua-cam.com/video/3muFdEu8dQM/v-deo.html Also there are videos here on youtube that specifically teach the vocal fry technique. Geoff from Voice Play has some tutorials on singing in a deep tone, it is true that girls will have trouble going deep into subharmonics BUT the technique can be learned by anyone who has the time and willpower to do so. Also Udemy and Skillshare have singing lessons if you are interested in learning different singing techniques. But most importantly, have fun... imagine if after all this quarantine and social distancing is over and you meet with your friends and family and you have a new skill to surprise them with ;)
I haven't seen a reaction to this song I didn't love yet. Lol. I've seen a lot in the music world in my 20 years of exploring it but the fact that she was able to go back and forth between clean and growls so easily was what impressed me the first time I heard it. That woman has a talent.
Her voice doesn't hurt after singing like that. It's all about technique. We feel like it hurts because if we try and do the same, we'd end up in pain after 2 seconds. But it's because we have no clue on how to do it properly, so we do it in a way it's not supposed to. Hence the pain. You can look up some tutorials online about "vocal fry" or "growling". Again, all about technique and even you guys could do it safely. Tatiana is just talented beyond imagination, does it effortlessly, with power and range. Amazing artist. Cheer guys !
Yep, you are mostly correct. One thing though; it is not vocal fry. Vocal fry is that sound sassy teenage girls make. You can do it by singing a note and dropping the pitch until you hear a poping sound. That is vocal fry. What Tati is doing is called "fry screaming". I know some of the technical things about screaming(because I am a vocalist and have been for 2yrs now) and it does not hurt at all. It actually kinda feels like humming except you feel little to none vibration under the Adam's apple and there is slightly more pressure in your throat. The technique that she is using is know as "fry screaming" it is were the vocal cords are close to closed and air goes through the slit making a buzzing/static noise and then becomes more distorted because it make the false cords(Also known as the vestibular folds) and the aryteniod cartilage flap around and then it resonate on the soft palate. It took me about a half a year to learn to do it and it is perfectly safe as long as you warm up, keep a forward resonance, stay hydrated, keep your throat relaxed, and don't overwork yourself(When your tired it can be dangerous because then you tend to put more pressure on your throat). There is another technique that is commonly used and it is called "false cord screaming". It is very similar with the only difference being that the vocal cords are open and the false cords and aryteniod cartilage flaps around even more. You can tell difference between them easily because false cord screams sound more breathy, typically have a lower tone, and can't be held for as long(because it uses more air). I am not as familiar with false cord screams as I am with fry screams so there might a difference with the feeling but I'm not sure. There's different methods to learn the techniques. I can tell you how to get started on learning to scream if you want! And if you have any more questions feel free to ask me!
Yes! I'm not one for message boards, but you 2 really impressed me. I discovered Jinjer last year and they instantly became my favorite current band. I also love that you guys are reacting to my genre, being I'm 45 and listen to mostly older rock and metal. I instantly went and watched your Queensreiche reaction, which is a special song for me. You guys are awesome!
Very good reaction, but there is something that I really liked and I want to highlight. She immediately noticed (and few reacting to this song do) the quality of the drummer. A girl walking over a bunch of adults who never said anything about it.
The metal screams take years of practice to not hurt your throat, it has a special technique to do professionally and safely. She has practiced her screams for 10+ years, to the point where its effortless.
You can learn to growl just like her (well maybe not EXACTLY like her, but you know what i mean) with a ton of vocal training. But you need to be careful and do a lot of small vocal techniques and exercises to develop your chords, otherwise you might actually do a lot of damage to your throat and voice. Takes years of practice for some people, though it helps to be a naturally talented singer like her
She doesn’t use her vocal chords she growls from her diaphragm and false chords. If anyone used their vocal chords they couldn’t use their head voice on a dime. I’ve seen them live twice and I can assure you she does the same thing constantly for nearly 2 hours, every day, all over the world on extremely large tours.
Yeah, anyone can learn to scream but it does not take years. You can learn the basics in months. What takes years is learning to manipulate the basic in various different ways. Also, it is as dangerous as you are saying. You can do it safely as long as you do the right technique, warm up, stay hydrated, keep a forward resonance, keep a relaxed throat, and don't overwork yourself(when you are tired it can be dangerous because you tend to put more pressure on your throat when you are tired). As a vocalist the advice I give to new screamers is "Practice when you can. If you feel any discomfort take a break and then get back to practicing. If you still feel discomfort then rest your voice for a few days or so and then get back to practicing.". I say this because that discomfort is only a sign that you are doing it wrong. But, doing the wrong technique will only produce damage if you do it for a while. Think about it we all have yelled at one point in our life but it has not produced any damage but if you are yelling for some time then that can lead to damage. Basically be cautious but not worried.
@@johnosenbaugh2250 You are correct that the distortion doesn't come from her vocal cords but her false cords. And that it needs good diaphragm support. But, the vocal cords play a role and she does not do it for 2 hours a day(as you can she Jinjer concerts last 30mins ~ 1h) because if she did she would overwork herself. I recommend 45mins a day with 15mins of that being a warm up. @@Templarofsteel88 Not, necessarily. Yes, of course you can damage your vocal cords if you do it incorrectly for a while. As a vocalist the advice I give to new screamers is "If there is discomfort stop immediately and take a break. If you still have discomfort then rest your voice for a few days. Basically be cautious about vocal damage but don't worry.". Think about it we all have yelled at one point in our lives but that has not lead to vocal damage. Of course if you yell a lot you will cause vocal damage. Same is true for screaming incorrectly. To do it safely you use the right technique, warm up, stay hydrated, keep forward resonance, keep your throat relaxed, and don't overwork yourself(if you are tired it can be dangerous because you tend to put more pressure on your throat.).

@@diegosotomiranda4107 she needed to learn it she just did it by herself
Yes everybody sounds differently though it can be manipulated
These kids had no idea what was about to hit them!!!!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣💀
4:20 The Dad in the window behind you guys! 🤣 Awesome!
ha..yes, I knew what was coming. This reaction was really fun to make.
You two have found the rabbit hole. Time to dive down.
One of the best reactions of jinjer in a while keep on going
Thanks Rick. Glad you enjoyed it.
Ah, it's nice seeing another vocalist here!
In retrospect it was cruel and way over the top but hey when you are a young man and somebody is cramping your style... you know. lol
ok, with "angry frog" i lost my shit... 🤣🤣
That was awesome! I absolutely had to back up and watch it again
Dad in the backround when she started screaming was hilarious 😂
Great idea for reactions, this is this first I’ve seen, but from the video list, Dad seems to be picking great tunes!
Been watching Jinjer reactions for a while now but kids recting...WOW!!! That is a new addiction now...
Go parents, go!!!
seen the reaction in the first 5 seconds. thanks for not wasting my time!
“Did she swallow the devil” Absolutely priceless. 😁 Epic reaction! 👍
lol you got to the Jinjer reaction already? Man, be prepared for your channel's popularity to skyrocket! I enjoy your videos. You have some great kids - insightful and entertaining!
Priceless. You all (and your dad) have great taste in music!
I saw them in San Antonio last year. They're even better live. She really sings like that all night. 🤘😈🤘
That is so amazing
I never heard of this band before now, but im impressed!
Really good song! And really good musicianship!! And I discovered it here on your channel!! Very cool!!👍
That is really cool. Glad we could introduce you to something you haven't heard before.
We are posting polls for next reaction here instagram.com/3yearsapart_official
There is also a lot of fun stuff and a sneak peek at the coolest dad in the world there. Check it out.
Next Jinjer song ... Teacher Teacher. You will love it
Anybody can learn this. It takes time and effort to do it safely.
Check out this video if you want to learn some basics of vocal frying and this way you could build up some endurance and tolerance in you vocal cords: ua-cam.com/video/3muFdEu8dQM/v-deo.html
Also there are videos here on youtube that specifically teach the vocal fry technique.
But most importantly, have fun... imagine if after all this quarantine and social distancing is over and you meet with your friends and family and you have a new skill to surprise them with ;)
More more please y'all rock
That vocal style started in the 90’s. It was over done by too many people.
Flesh And The Power It Holds- Death
I haven't seen a reaction to this song I didn't love yet. Lol. I've seen a lot in the music world in my 20 years of exploring it but the fact that she was able to go back and forth between clean and growls so easily was what impressed me the first time I heard it. That woman has a talent.
about the same age as you guys here.... This was my EXACT reaction to hearing Jinjer for the first! Love you guys!
"I need to show this to my friends..." yes bro...yes you do LMAO
yall are BABIEs... but lmfao " did she swallow the devil" i love it
I've seen a few reactions to this, and this is definitely the best one yet
This is my favorite reaction video by far.
Pisces is a great icebreaker. Jinjer's other tracks are just as impressive.
Darn auto....thank you. I fixed it.
Imagine Tati, the vocalist, as a parent. "GO TO BED" "BRUSH YOUR TEETH AS WELL AS FLOSS"
Dad peaking int he window during the first set of growls was fantastic! lol. Fun reaction. Keep listening, you'll like it.
Hilarious line "did she swallow the devil?" HAHAHA! Nope, she trained her voice to do that.
My current favorite band. All of their songs are amazing. Way too much talent in this band.
I've never posted a comment before on UA-cam.... but you kids are awesome! Loved your reaction and your thoughts on this. Keep it up!
Seriously? First comment ever?
"do they just start retching and say, maybe I can turn this into a song".
I like that kid.
Just saw Jinjer live about 8 months ago. Wow!
"My throat hurts watching it" LOL :) That was the second best comment after "She swallowed the devil" :)
Another great song from Jinjer is Captain Clock. There is both an official video as well as a live version. They are both worth checking out.
I love watching people react to this video; their faces are priceless.
This is gonna be fun😈😈😈😈
"I need to show this to my friends..."
Palpatine: "DO EET!"
Its training and talent, it requires very precise control to do it without hurting yourself.
Takes years of practice for some people, though it helps to be a naturally talented singer like her
if you try this without knowing what you are doing you will damage your voice.
Little boy at 10:25 already planning to scare his friends and laugh at their reaction when he shows them the song, haha!
I had the exact same reaction my First Time hearing This now 3 years later i am the biggest Fan.
Y'all make me laugh just loving y'all

Props to Dad for keeping the secret, great reaction lol
“I need to show this to my friends” was exactly my reaction too. 😆

I had the same reaction to Jinjer and now I listen to them daily.
Yup, I agree with the people saying to check out their live performance. Their performance at Wacken 2019 of the song "Perennial" is just amazing. "Captain clock" from resurrection is amazing at the end ❤️
Can't stop laughing 😂 !!!! So much fun !
Glad we can bring a little joy to your life
Yeah that is totally her really raw voice , her name is Tatiana Shanulyayk I'm sorry if I mispelled her last name
It took several years of practice for her to be able to do that without hurting herself. She and the band are all very talented and are amazing to see in concert
It has taken her years but I would say "it has taken her year to learn how to do it without hurting herself". Because it probably has taken her a few months to learn how to do it without hurting herself but what takes years is learning how to manipulate it in various different ways.
If I would have shown this to my kids when they was 16 and 13 they would have avoided me for a week

Welcome to the world of music that’s not played on the radio.
4 years after your debut to Jinjer (Tatiana), I wonder if either of you are fans. Your reactions were priceless.
4:21 Dad raising the roof in the background is hilarious!
13-year-old me certainly never thought he'd see a video, some decades later, of someone casually saying "once quarantine is over..."
