Playing Final Fantasy XIV has never been easier, and it is the premier MMORPG to date, one reason for this is its ability to be played on Consoles, and PC, along with its support for controllers. You can use a PS4 controller or an Xbox / PC controller, whatever your preference might be. Personally, I find the controller the most comfortable to use, especially for longer play sessions, and I use it as my primary way to play on PC, but you can use any input method you want when playing this game.
So this video is going to be broken up into several different sections.

I thought the gold standard was PSO2NG until I played 14.
the targeting part was such a big help, i never really was able to quickly taget something and now i can play smoothly without standing around like an idiot
2 years later your video still helps people getting started with the controller. Thanks a lot!
Glad to hear it!
hell yes it does
Here in 2022
Still very helpful in 2024
Hot tip: While you can sheath/unsheath your weapon by pressing the left stick, this is not ideal, as it doesn't work if you have something targeted (it'll activate lock-on targeting instead, as shown here in Part 3). You can however still sheath/unsheath your weapon while targeting (and when not ofc), by clicking LB+RB (in that order).
I know its almost been a year since you made this comment, but it has helped me so much
Wow this is a nice tip thanks, didn’t even realize
Not all heros wear capes...but I sorta feel like you might just have one stored away for cases like this ;)
Thank you so much my R3 is now free to macro. You absolute legend
Whats the use of sheath/unsheath?
Took like an hour to get used to playing on a controller. now I can lean back and chill while playing 👌😎
It’s the best way IMO :)
@@Work2Game honestly. I’m still working out memorization, but it’s truly much smoother and it feels like I’m playing Dissidia when I’m playing
Would you say it feels better on ps4? I play on pc but thinking about switching
@@rhysharrison2701 You can use a controller but still play on your pc :)!
You would most likely notice some fps loss and worse graphics if you play the game on ps4. I myself play on ps4 (just started 3 days ago), but thats because my pc is a complete toaster >.
@@dahut95 yo same here! I'm downloading the game right now because on my laptop I kept having these directX crashes
Do you play on eu chaos?
The limited hotbar felt like a huge deterrent to me when playing with a controller. Thanks for pointing out how to fix that.
What's up WorkForce! I hope you enjoyed this video :)

I hope you all have an amazing day!
Something I wished you had talked about was how did you get second hot bar to look like the controller hot bar?
Controller you were by my side all along my guiding moonlight
I was m/kb only for a long time. Then my PC took a dump and I was tired of rebuilding it so I bought a PS4 Pro. I plugged my mouse and KB in only to find there was nasty input lag on both so I gave controller a shot.
After a couple of days of playing/tweaking my controls i was shocked to find how amazing the controller implementation is for FF14. Fast forward 6 months Sony did a system update and now my mouse and kb have no issues.
But i’m not going back. That’s how awesome the controller is for FF14.
Thanks for the post. I am thinking about trying controller, as I play on PC but have comfort issues with long play sessions. This might save my ass.
@@phant0mdummy It’s totally worth it. For me it was lying on the couch while tanking that sold me hehe
Hey Everyone! Wanted to let you know if you're looking for more controller guides or the return of my Final Fantasy Podcast (CrystalCore Radio) check out my personal channel ua-cam.com/users/delmontyb or my Podcast Channel: ua-cam.com/users/GingerGamingRadio
Soooooo helpful, thank you! I was struggling a lot with keyboard/mouse. The controller is so much more comfortable and, for me, makes navigating the world much easier :)
You’re very welcome Pocket glad I could help :)
this helped a ton. good that you went through the options i think thats all we wanted
Thank you! I was having trouble swapping to my second crossbar to learn what procs on dragoon before this, and with the crossbars showing up on the side I've put together a much better rotation to use until I'm 80! I'll watch the rest for more tips, but it's late and you've been very helpful!
Thank you so much. Targeting was my biggest issue, now I can fight without targeting non-enemies, deselecting, and trying to target the enemy again.
Glad I was able to help in some way Jacob :)
Thank you I didn’t know this and thought I had to give up skills for others but now I got all the room I need your a life saver !💯
Thanks Faded, glad I could help and I hope you have a blast with the game and your new found power :)
Looooved this!!! I just started dabbling with Samurai and this guide def helped expand my set up! Awesome energy to match!
Thx Brayn, the alliance switching is what i got from your vid, appreciate your vids :D
The game has been a bit overwhelming for me starting out but this really helped me out a lot, so thanks for the awesome video! Subbed :)
Glad I could help!
Same! I'm playing on ps4 and there's a lot to get used to with the controller. This video is being way way helpful. Thx, guys. Keep up the good work!
The community is super friendly. If you ever feel overwhelmed, just ask somebody. Also, join an FC.
I have the same issue, and I've been playing since day one. With the new jobs that start off at 60, you have 20 skills that are automatically added. I just run beginner dungeons until you get the skill line down.
Been playing FFXIV on a controller for years and you taught me some really handy things. Thank you so much Brian! I love your guys' content on WTG! Keep it coming!
Great vid. Thanks. I especially liked the Set Selection part; where you control which hotbars get cycled via the bumper. Useful for me as a healer: one for soloing, one for healing, and the ability to switch on the fly, when necessary.
Happy to help :) glad you got something from this
Wow, excellent and to the point. Well made. Thank you so much. Subscribed👍🏼
thank you so much for this video, i have a injury on my shoulder and i can´t use the mouse without pain, so now i can play on my controller and is really comfortable.
I’m so sorry your injured. But I’m happy I’ve been able to help in some way :)
this was very helpful thank you!
OMG! This video was sooooo much help. I've played through ARR and just started HW and I couldn't figure out how to get the second crossbar display to work. It was driving me crazy. This video was extremely helpful.
Thank you! I love this game and this makes me love it more! Liked and subscribed!
Great video… Extremely new to these types of games and trying to catch up and learn def can be challenging so thank you for the breakdowns
This helped me a LOT. Thank you so much for this guide!!
This is a really great vid on controllers - I just started with FF and wanted to start off using a controller on my PC. It's hard to start with but I can see it will work well when using it for combos. Thanks for taking the time to make these
Just got the game today & this helped tremendously!! Thank you so much for making this video 2 years ago! It still helps
Thanks for the detailed info
Answered every question I had! Subbed
Oh awesome! Welcome to the WorkForce Woozy!!! :)
This video has been very helpful. I've never really played with controllers. You saved me hours of figuring it out. Now I can start working on HUD skill placement and muscle memory. :) You're Awesome!
Thanks a lot man!!!! ❤️
OMG THANK YOU!!!! I have been wanting to use the double crossbar for so long!!!
Thanks for the very informative and helpful vid! :)
Thanks Ryan, thanks for watching too :D
VERY helpful for us newbs. The camera-based movement and Zelda auto-lock was driving me insane. Both fixed now. Many thanks!
Happy to help, and let us know if you have any questions :)
Thanks so much for having these vids avabile. A friend needed some help with getting his controller going and I pointed him here. Since I'm a Keyboard and mouse person, I felt the info you provide was the better resource he could use to make his game more enjoyable. Thank you! ^.^
Thanks for this comment and I’m just happy to help. Hopefully your friend got what they needed and if they or you have any questions just let me know
Just wana say thanks man! New back too the game, and just started tanking. This has held to no end! Keep up the top content 👌
The videos are awesome! I played up to level 70 and i learned a lot of tips that will make a difference. Thanks a lot!
Glad to hear it Maxine :) I’m glad I can help :)
The hardest thing is exercising your muscle memory. This is so very true for me who has been playing mmorpg for more than 10 years on KBM. The day I bought and tried Controller, I feel like I was playing mmo for the first time back decades ago, like for real. The only thing I mastered was only movement and camera. Once I got into the fights, dungeons, raids, HOLYSHIT I felt like hell was about to break loose, keep forgetting the keybind / pressing the wrong buttons so many times, and I mained healer, so yeah. The most mistakes I’ve made was between Bumpers (left right) switched with face and direction buttons.
I played solid 1 week (but only around 2-3 hours per day) for me to FINALLY get used to it.
Me af rn with the dungeons, first mmo ever, lv 22. Everything is so overwhelming (thaumaturge)
this is invaluable. I've been so lazy to do this lol ty
You're very welcome IRIA, thanks for watching :)
Thanks for the guide. My hotbars were annoying me but you explained it so well. Thank you
Just started the game yesterday and this is by far the most useful guide I have found. Thank you for your hard work.
Welcome to the game! What class did you pick? :)
Paladin+Scholar. Being my friend is like having a fast pass on theme park rides. Zero queue times. Lol
This is a ton of info.
I'm going to have to rewatch a couple times thank you.
Just wanted you to know, I have been playing thus game for years and just now looked for a guide to help with button management, this guide was an amazing help and I will definitely be able to fight so much smoother than ever, tyvm for you're guide and thus helped me immensely.
This was great thx very much 👍
Thankyou for this!
Love the vid man, helped me a lot its so cool playing reaper on a joystick :D
Glad it helped!
This was amazing, thank you very much
You're very welcome!
Great video man. I'm a newbie on ps4 and helped a lot! Thank youuuu!
Glad I could help and welcome to the game :) I hope you have a blast and if you have any questions just let us know :)
I want to say thank you so much for these guides! You guys are awesome! I just started playing a little over a month ago and I was clueless on a lot of this stuff. Especially adding more hot bars. This guide really helped me and makes my dps job so much easier. The only thing that I don’t understand is macros and if they are something I should be using as a dps. But keep doing what you guys are doing!!
Not sure if still needed, but you should never use macros to string for example combos, since macros use a fixed time to execute, while when pressing you can "queue" skills, allowing you to execute them directly after each other. So when you're repeatedly pressing a button while the global cooldown is still running, your game will recognize what you wanna do next and execute it instantly. A macro will delay your global cooldown and significantly lower your dps. However, there are macros that are helpful with targeting. For example I have macros for my Aetherial Manipulation to certain party members, so I don't have to go through the party list to target them. I know a lot of dragoons do the same for their second eye. Also it can be helpful to target ground aoes (not sure if any dps has any left though :') )
This is EXTREMELY helpful. Thank you!
Very glad I could help. :)
thank you so much, targeting was killing me!!
Thank you so much! This helps a lot
You're very welcome Andy, thanks for watching and let me know if you have any other questions. :)
Thanks for this guy, super helpful! just trying out controller today and this has cut my learning time in half :D
Glad I could help! And if you need anything else just let us know :)
Thanks a lot for this. I was completely lost, but this has made things a lot easier to understand.
You're very welcome, and I hope you enjoy playing the game on controller :)
I play it on ps4 and this helped so much man! Thank you so much! Incredible content.
One of the BEST videos for newbies when it comes to controllers. Thanks for the video!
Thanks so much Ryan, glad I could help and thanks for the kind words :)
This was very helpful
Just did the work around to get the game to work on the steam deck, now on to configuring the controls. Thanks for the video!
I've been using my controller wrong until now, thanks man this helped a ton
So happy this was helpful :)
Awesome, thanks!! I'm trying to play with a controller because wrist injuries, can't use keyboard for a long session anymore, perhaps with the controller now I'll be able!
Ty thus was very helpful
Glad it helped
After one video you showed me that I'm working myself to hard with my controller. You got a new sub today.
thanks! welcome!
Massive thank you man you just helped me see how awesome this game really is.
Glad I could help! Let me know if you have any questions. :)
I barely began playing this game like 4 days ago and now watching this very helpful video I am really enjoy the game alot more than I was before. Thank you for this video :)
Thanks for all the work Brian. Been following you since you XI content. I recently quit XI (sylph) and joined XIV (sargatanas) and I'm glad I did. It actually feels like XI in the old days when SE "kinda" cared about the player base.
very helpful
Thank you for this video, sir.
Man what a well done video thanks a lot just coming back after years and omg I was so lost this helped he more then you no really really well done video 👏👍
Great vid. Just got Shadowbringers on PS4 appreciate the help.
You're so welcome, and glad I could help :)
super helpful ty
So glad I could help :)
Nice guide, thank you
Your very welcome Red :)
Just started playing on PC not played since 2.5 and that was on ps4 so this really helped me remember half this stuff and learn some new tips and trick to boot THX great guide 👍
You can also sheathe / draw your weapon by holding L1 and pressing R1, if you want to avoid accidentally locking on.
I routinely send this to pals who want to shift from KB/M to Controller for fun! Thank you so much for coming out with this guide WTG, you guys laid the foundations of my gameplay and it's been the smoothest ever since!
This video is the best controller guide. I'm really grateful, thank you!
This really helps. I could tell that the system customisation had a lot of potential to make it work for each persons preferences. But I was overwhelmed with how much you can change and move things around. I was going to say something specific helped but actually all of it was super useful
Thanks Ryan, I'm glad I was able to help, and I hope you really enjoy the game :)
That targeting mechanic with both enemies and allies is the biggest help THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!
I just started playing this week (White Mage) on PS4. This video helped me a LOT
Welcome to FFXIV and happy to help in anyway. Hope you enjoy the game and white mage (my current favorite healer) :)
I have been playing this game for more than 6 months. And I just learned how to assign hotbars and make my laife easier. Thank you very much!!!
Glad I could help!
thank you very much! Getting started with gamepad and had no idea about extended hotbar and all that stuff. I used to hate gamepads in my life but FF14 made me reconsider this
This is awesome! Thanks for the guide. I want to play through Shadowbringers from Start to finish entirely with a controller bc I believe it’ll offer a more relaxed and immersive experience.
Thank you so much for making your video's it's going to help me transition from keyboard/mouse to controller.
You are more then welcome, and if you have any questions just let me know. I’m going to try and knock out the rest of the jobs for the current expansion before 2021
Great guide!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you this is very helpful
Thanks James, glad I could help in some way :)
Holy shite mate!! Just got to lv 50 on my warrior Nd this hot bar issue on my controller was worrying me.. this guide helped a ton! Thank you
Hmm intresting I learned some stuff watching it, I was always struggling targetting ennemies when a lot of npc's were around helping you out. Now I know how to fix it :) Thank you for the guide :)
Glad I could help!
Отличное видео, thanks!
Thank you for sharing!
My pleasure!
This is so helpful!
Glad it was helpful!
Serious game changer! Thanks so much!
Happy to help and hope you have a blast. Let us know if you have any other questions :)
Thank you for this. The other youtuber had so many quick edits and forced expression it was driving me nuts. Nice video.
adding the extra hot bars was confusing me but this clearly explains how to set it up and use it. Thank You.
Great guide!!! Really useful for new players like myself who’s more comfortable with controllers.
Welcome to FFXIV and so happy this was helpful :)
Okay I had a chat with one from my FC, about playing with a controller.. So I got curious and found this video and it intrigued me. I spent about an hour or so, changing settings and setting it all up. and apart from the clunky combat, that comes with not being used to playing with a controller. It really grabbed a hold of me. This is pretty good! I'm going to stick with it for a while and check it out, this is so chill. Thank you so much for this video! without it I would have never figured out how to set this up!
This video guide is excellent. I knew FFXIV devs had done a good job with the controller scheme but had no idea just how streamlined it really was. Up until this point I thought people just cycled through all their hotbars with R1.
Anyway, fantastic work. I might actually try some button heavy jobs now. Appreciate it.
many thanks..... new player to ffxiv, wanted to use controller. This helped a bunch!
Omg thank you so much you saved my LIFE. My wrists prefer controller sooo much more.
Happy to help :D and so much agreed. :D
I've been playing FFXIV for 6 years on PS4. Recently, I was able to build my gaming PC and started playing final on PC as well. I have been STRUGGLING to play on KB/M. I have an mmo mouse and have put in hours of practice, but I just can not get comfortable with it. I'm a hotmess with KB/M. I've decided that I'll be moving back to my controller so that I'm actually useful to my party again. It's good to see that there are so many people that use controller on PC. I almost felt embarrassed and like I was "giving up" on playing the game properly on KB/M. Thanks for your video. It and reading the comments have definitely helped me feel better.
Nice vid thanks
You're very welcome Juan :)
