Now THIS was a video I never thought Id see from anyone. Tho I play on mouse an keyboard this was a DAMN fun watch. An I am sure will be a godsend for those whom prefer a controller play style or be on the PS4.
I love playing on a controller because of the added mobility of my character. I REALLY love playing on PC using mouse, keys, AND a controller. So many options.
There's nothing better than coming home from work, shoving myself on the couch and run my roulettes while drinking some beer. Controller support on this game is the best thing ever.
You can drag and drop abilities w a ps4 controller. The touch pad works like a laptop mouse. Doubletap and hold, then drag ability. Controller works as keyboard and mouse.
Good vid with good info. Playing on ps4 since launch so this is kind of like second nature and what I feel is common knowledge but of course there may be tons of people that don't know or people that have been thinking about making a switch so it's ice to see a video like this. Two things though... 1. You don't have to toggle over to Controller mode. You can stay on Kb/M and just enable Crossbar Bar mode. This is actually the best set up IMO because you can still use hotbars at the same time use your controller as your main interface device. Because MMO's are so chat active it's highly preferable to have a Kb/M on hand at all times, so might as well learn a few shortcuts on Kb to make your life easier. Copy/Paste for instance INFINITELY better on Kb/M especially when you need to copy a macro for a certain fight. 2. DS4 Controller is also a lot better simply because of the Touch Pad. It acts like a mouse and you can also use that to move stuff around the crossbar on the fly. It also enables you to click through your screen since the Touch Pad is also clickable. Much better experience overall.
Thank you so much for this video. Now I finally can solve this problem I've had since the beginning of 2.0 of not being able to select the targets I want. It made tanking impossible to me. I'd like to add that to change the size of the window (e.g. map, mahjong, inventory, ...) you have open, you don't have to go to layout. Just press the right stick
Thank you for this video! While I figured all of this out on my own by now, when I started to play 3 years ago I was frantically searching for tutorials like this. I've always been a console child and never had a gaming pc, when I started ffxiv on pc 2 years prior I gave up cause I just can't play on keyboard. Once I started on ps3 with controller it was such a fun game! This is going help controller newbies a lot!
wish I could share some more tips, but most of them I learned from your old videos on controllers. I'll never have enough words to thank you. I'm a 100% better player because of those
Awesome job, I played on controller since 2.0 and just recently decided to switch to keyboard and mouse. I searched for videos on keyboard and mouse setup and only was able to find a few good ones. This is a very good guide thank you!
I've played this game for like 4 years on a controller and didn't know you could target by holding a trigger and tapping a shoulder button. Super handy, thanks for the tip :)
Been playing with a controller since release and never knew I could use the triggers and bumpers in unison to change targets.......I am glad I watched this A few things you missed however -under system config you can change your button config. One cool thing I do is you can set any button, I use R3 or clicking the right thumbstick, and I set that to use Macro 99. So I have it set where I click the right thumb and my sprint is used, dont even need it on a bar ever. -also explaining soft or hard targeting would of been nice as well and it's very helpful for both healing and tanking.
Been thinking about making the jump to controller for a while but being a WHM main has scared me from making that jump. I just found this channel a week or so ago and ive enjoyed it so far! This video plus the other controller guides are going to be so freakin helpful in getting me to get used to the controller! Thanks for your work with the videos and keep it up!
5:40 is so good! Now I don’t have to awkwardly face another enemy after killing one and pressing the confirm button, repeating the steps if I didn’t get the target I wanted.
mmmh...this is interesting, I used to play Tera with a controller, and man was it ever fun. Did healing and tanking and of course DPS, with immense mobility and it helps keep the battles fast paced. I'm thinking I might try it here too. Mind you, Tera has an automatic combo system, which takes away the work of remembering combos. It's gonna take some practice for sure. I can't wait to be able to play while I lounge on my couch with my kitteh in my lap.
I see a lot of videos that show how to set up the expanded hot bar but a friend of mine walked me through that instead of 4 skills on each side you can have all 8 on and that's helped me a ton cause now I can see 2 full hot bars with all the cooldowns
I switched to 8 skills with Shadowbringers and it's helped out a lot too. I just wish I could hide the slots that aren't being used, like I can with the hotbars. :)
A couple of thoughts not related to settings but more the placement of abilities on the cross bar. If you press R1, I believe this is the default button, you can switch between the different cross bar sets. Restricting yourself to only the first and second sets will allow you to press R1 to switch between the two fairly quickly. Keeping your most used skills on the first set and the the lesser used skills, like diversion, lucid dreaming and sprint on the second. Keep in mind however that some jobs just plain have too much ability bloat and even two sets isn't enough (lol) but if you keep unnecessary things off the hot bar like anything you can access quickly through the start menu really ought to not be there. Also this could be just me and the way I play but I've often times found that using the target lock on controller will result in me eating AoE because it took me too long to unlock and run off. More so when, for whatever reason, the button doesn't press and I'm stuck slowing backing away instead of hauling ass out of there. Feels bad man. lol Just my 2gil.
I def needed a video like this, I only play console and the learning curve is steep for some jobs. It took so much experimentation to figure out how to heal efficiently at first, I'm still struggling with jobs like Summoner that(at least when I last played it) had like 1000 abilities to manage(or at least it felt like that), controller efficiency is so important, makes the game so fun when you finally find a set up that clicks.
One very useful thing he didn't mention is that you can set R3 on the controller to perform macro number 99. I have mine set to do a "target the target of my target" macro and it is exceptionally useful for healing. It allows me to instantly go from dpsing to targeting the tank (or whomever the enemy is targeting) for very fast heals. It's also very good for any ability that you would target the tank for, ie. Goad, Dragon Sight, Shirk, ect.
You can set both L3 and R3 to macros 98 or 99 I have sprint on one and focus target on the other however I might try your target of target for a bit to see how it feels
I play as whm. I created macros for my dps abilities that cast on my target's target. So I can stay locked onto my tank but still hit my tank's target.
4:10 is really helpful when you have loads of PCs like in Limsa and you just wanna wink at that one cute catgirl but you ended up headbanging everywhere and she teleports out before you could.
My brain is fried with just playing the game and then seeing this. Im still struggling with the controller for certain things, targetting enemies that arent aggro to me, using shield lob is a struggle whirlwind is a god send. Even tho i want to continue playing the game, feel i need to play and do and follow all this to get it. I had my skills set to one press based on another help video but the two extra bars probably would help with all the skills
I had to turn auto-target OFF because getting out of certain split second AOEs in Extreme battles, I would always accidentally click down on the left joystick. And when you're auto-targeted, you don't run lol. You slowly strafe. It's gotten me into trouble too many times.
as a ps4 player i had kinda problem with the number of skills on some jobs, where the total number exceeded the available buttons on my crossbar (double) with GNB. now I put LB and Tankstance on the r3 and l3 buttons and can finally ake use of all my skills
Thanks for this video man, you earned a sub, my brother and cousin recently started playing, but I'm on PC and they're on PS4 so I had a hard time teaching them stuff without mouse and keyboard.
Great video! I recently started playing on PS4 mad I'm loving it! Much more relaxing than mouse and keyboard, and personally I think it is easy to target party members and enemies, but it isn't as fast in comparison to keyboard. I'm using a TAC pro for the PS4 which I can use both mouse and controller functionality. It is a bit of a learning curve and I'm still getting used to it but it feels much nicer than the traditional KBD/M
Here's one for PC gamers -> While FFXIV is by no means a "platformer" it DOES absolutely feature a bit of platforming, in the form of Gold Saucer GATE's Cliffhanger and Leap of Faith. Cliffhanger is less problematic, but Leap of Faith (especially near suspected/announced new GS stuff when EVERYBODY is there) is hectic and frankly quite dodgy to pull off with keyboard and mouse. Inspiration struck one day while frustrated with repeated falls, so on a whim I turned on my XBox controller....I won't say it was magical, but it was close enough. The precise motion control from the joysticks is significantly better than the keyboard/mouse, and it makes those 2 events in particular quite a lot easier.

How do you remove stuff like regen while tanking on a 🎮 controller? I play on PS4 and laptop, love it, just hope that I will be able to sync settings and hotbar layouts soon 🙃
Just UA-cam ffxiv controller set up. Tons of videos on it. I have the main 16. 16 more on top accessed with double tap. And another 16 accessed by holding both l2 and r2.
I have a problem with the party list setup to place tank, healer, and dps in that order. When I play a healer it places me at the top of the party or dps. I started having this problem ever since I came back in January this year
Look through settings there is a way to change the sorting order depending on your class you are playing, though I can't remember off hand which one it is
I play on ps4 controller won’t lie it’s a lot more comfortable but it’s annoying to set up a hotbar since everybody has a different set up i use cross hotbar
It's a pain but worth it for me to have the hotbar show the CD so I can see when they are ready without switching the cross bar. I'm not really excited about redoing it for Shadow bringers
The only thing I'm hating about this game right now is that since the world visits happened everything has kinda gone horrible hunts suck ppl from other worlds pull fast and the bitch about it sometimes you can't even log in because theres ppl on queue cuz the world is full and honestly they keep forgetting that the NA and EU servers are not like the JP honestly
Honestly at high level it's just a matter of getting your hotbars where they need to be so that you can keep up. In fact several major streamers play on controller.
It might take some adjustment, because you're probably more familiar with using a controller. But you'll find that once you've practised with a Keyboard and Mouse, you'll find that a controller doesn't even come CLOSE on this kind of game.
It just depends on the roll and want. If I was forced to only play keyboard and mouse, I don't think I'd play this game. I live on a keyboard and mouse, I don't want to play on one.
Work To Game I just want quick, accurate, and easy to use controls. Controllers are perfect for some games, keyboard and mouse others. FFXIV has fantastic controller options for an MMO, but it will never have the versatility of a full customizable keyboard/mouse keybind setup. If you have to play on PS4, then obviously you have less of a choice.
Glen Cain trust me, it’s better in every way. It automatically syncs to a PC without trying. Automatically syncs to 14 on PC too. It’s a better controller in every way
Great vid. A lot of information. Had to save for reference..one big question..how do you take off/reduce mage power bar? It takes up so much space and half of text I can’t see. Thanks in advanced subbed
Mage power bar? If your referring to the back mage ui element go into your HUD editor and then select it and resize it with home/click the right stick. Or you can pull up it’s prosperities there and resize it or use the simplified version

:)
i tried playing on controller, early game it's no problem but once u get into end game stuff, it's really not a good option at all.
Ya okay lol
Yeah, I think you should check that statement. In fact, go check my fflogs and see how bad the controller is for end game
@@enyaliosares4301 meanwhile most of Japan's playerbase plays on ps4. But ya it's bad for end game
Glen Cain lol yup. Must be terrible
Wrong
It just depends on the roll and want. If I was forced to only play keyboard and mouse, I don't think I'd play this game. I live on a keyboard and mouse, I don't want to play on one.
Work To Game I just want quick, accurate, and easy to use controls. Controllers are perfect for some games, keyboard and mouse others. FFXIV has fantastic controller options for an MMO, but it will never have the versatility of a full customizable keyboard/mouse keybind setup. If you have to play on PS4, then obviously you have less of a choice.
@@StanRyker let's meet in the arena and see who wins then. I'll come on controller and you on kb and mouse.
@Glen Cain sorry I’m an adult with nothing to prove, so I don’t tend to PvP.
God i forgot why i hate xbox one controllers, THEY CLICK SO MUCH!

Well, yet another Controller Guide which only uses a
I’ve replied to your other comments, so to be blunt, the controller layout is not different for PS4
Eww xbox controller really?
Glen Cain it’s superior to the PlayStation controller in every way.
@@enyaliosares4301 lol for most games yes. But not for ff14
Glen Cain trust me, it’s better in every way. It automatically syncs to a PC without trying. Automatically syncs to 14 on PC too. It’s a better controller in every way
@@enyaliosares4301 it shows what little ya know. You literally plug the ps4 controller in and it syncs to ff14 lol
Work To Game thanks again! Just starting..like brand new lol all the help I can’t find is greatly appreciated
How do I see what enhancements and enfeeblements mean? Only in mouse mode I can do that, but not on controller.
